2 QueenslandMastersAthleticsAssociation Cadbury Marathon Day Hobart A COOL JANUARY CHALLENGE: Cadbury Marathon Day Report The thirtieth running of the Cadbury Marathon was held in Hobart on January 13 th. The morning s program included a half marathon (which was also the Australian Masters Athletics Half Marathon Championship), a 5 km event and the Caramello 1 km for the little kids. Seven QMA members contested the Masters Championship: Elizabeth Macguire (W40), Anne Ryan (W55), Irene Davey (W65), Paul Shard (M40), Gerard Macguire (M45). Ron Peters (M55) and John Kling (M55). Ron was the first of the 95 Masters runners to finish in a time of 1:18:20. He beat 42 male Masters runners younger than himself! Ann Ryan won her age group in 1:36:01. Full results are elsewhere in this newsletter. After the hot conditions and bushfires of the previous week, the morning was perfect for distance running. The temperature at the start was below 10 and still only 15 or 16 by the time the last runners finished. It was mostly overcast with just a light breeze. The bush fire smoke had all cleared from the Hobart area. The course was pretty good and scenic, best described as undulating. It was an out-and-back course starting and finishing outside the Cadbury factory with one loop for the half and two for the marathon. The most challenging part was the last kilometre uphill all the way back to the Cadbury factory precinct. I enjoyed the event. After trying to train through Brisbane s summer weather, I had a week in Launceston to acclimatise. The cool conditions on the morning were a real bonus. In fact, it felt so cool that I wore thin cotton gloves for the first five kilometres. As we ran down the hill from the Cadbury factory, I was trying not to think about coming back up it later! Some of the landmarks along the course have become familiar: the entrance driveway to MONA (a Hobart must visit), the Riverside Motel where Anne, Shaun and I stayed the previous night, and the Entertainment Centre. The Bowen Bridge gave scenic views up and down the Derwent River, before the turnaround point from which we headed back along the same route. Counting down the kilometres: 18, 19, 20 now it s up that hill! It will not beat me! I will run all the way up! And I will try to sprint that last 100 or so metres to the finish! I had a good run and I was happy with my performance. All finishers received a Finisher s Bags (Cadbury Purple, of course!) containing the 30 th Anniversary Commemorative finisher s medal, and a large purple Cadbury Marathon towel. And yes, a block of Cadbury chocolate. Hobart is definitely the place to go if you want a cool (with luck) January challenge! 16 17 th Australian Masters Athletics Winter Throwing Championships- Canberra or How I learnt to love Canberra in its winter shroud. Canberra once again rose to the expectations we have of it on Spring long weekends and gave the 17 th Championships a winter blast, particularly on day one, that ensured it would be a day long remembered in the history of the WTC. The maximum temperature was about 8 Celsius with a 40kmh wind chill factor of -10 Celsius. But the 58 brave souls (age range 30 to 80), many of whom had been warned to bring plenty of warm clothing, gathered in front of the official area to be welcomed by Convenor Ray Green and receive their competition medal and participation certificate from Sharon Gibbins. Unfortunately stalwarts Astrid and Graeme Rose had been struck down by a lurgy and were unable to get to the Championships. Their assistance was sorely missed. 10 year competition T shirts were given to Ron Simcock, Peter Freeman and Andrew Atkinson-Howatt. Helen Searle, although not competing, came down from Brisbane to be an official! Thank you. And the first day s events got under way on time at 10:30, thanks particularly to equipment manager Jayne Hardy and her team, who started preparing the ground at 6:00am. DAY 1: Some good hammer distances for the men were registered by Roger Glass (Vic60) with 44.77, Stuart Gyngell (NSW45)at and Lajos Joni (NSW55) reaching The closest men s competition was between men 65 Ray Green (ACT) at and John Reynolds (Vic) with Althea Mackie (Qld40) led the women with 40.15, while women 45 Jayne Hardy (ACT) 39.13, Chris McCahill (NZ) and Glenys Whitehead (NSW) had a close competition. Other good throws were registered by Sharon Gibbins (ACT50) 37.18, Pauline Armstrong (ACT30) 36.00, June Lowe (NSW55) and Jan Banens (ACT70) In spite of the strong winds some good javelin throws resulted. Andrew Ravenscroft (NSW45) a first timer, had the longest throw of the day at , marginally ahead of Andrew Atkinson-Howatt(NSW55) with Aaron Schenk (SA40) 39.15, Robert Hanbury-Brown (NSW55) 37.56, and Rod Watson (NSW35) all performed well. Less than a metre separated Anatoly Kirievsky (NSW30) and Warren Jones (NSW30) in a hard fought affair. The women s javelin was dominated by Jayne Hardy s 31.92, the closest to her being Glenys Whitehead s Stuart Gyngell was the only men s discus thrower over 40m with for a Championship Record (CR), with Wayne martin (NSW55) 39.31, Bob Banens (ACT60) 38.04, Ray Green 36.56, Andrew Atkinson-Howatt 35.02, Roger Glass and Robert Hanbury-Brown throwing well. Cornel Vena s (Qld80) was a sound effort. Jayne Hardy and Chris McCahill had an enthralling duel. Glenys Whitehead s in the same age group was a nice throw. Stuart Gyngell garnered another CR in the shot with a very good 15.47, while Jamie Muscat s (NSW35) maintained a high standard. Wayne martin s was a good throw as was Ron Simcock s(nsw75) Bert Anders (SA65) win was well deserved. Jayne Hardy 9.12 lowered her colours to Chris McCahill s 9.81 shot in another close contest. While Kate Clarke (NSW60) 7.61 was well ahead in her age group, Jillian Senior (NSW60) 5.86, Adriana van Bockel (NSW60) 5.78 and Judy Brown (NSW60) 5.71 fought hard for second and third places. Roger Glass was dominant in the weight throw with 16.96, while Lajos Doni s was a good throw. Other good performances came from Robert Hanbury-Brown 13.99, Stuart Gyngell 13.73, Jamie Muscat and Ron Simcock Chris McCahill s was well ahead of Jayne Hardy s Althea Mackie s was good, while Jan Banens set a CR with So the weather had not stopped the enthusiasm, had not stopped close but friendly competition and had not got in the way of three Championship Records. DAY 2 : Blue skies and a cool breeze following a frosty night welcomed athletes to the Throws Pentathlon day of the Championships. Trish Thomas was warmly wrapped inside the equipment shed ready to provide ongoing scores to the athletes. In the hammer Jan Banens for points, Chris McCahill for 923 points, closely followed by Jayne Hardy for 915 points, Sharon Gibbins for 886 points and Jill Taylor (NSW55) for 886 points, topped the scoring table. In the shot Jan Banens again topped the scoring with 7.13 for 743 points. Chris McCahill for 686 points, Sharon Gibbins with 9.05 and 621 points, Jill Taylor 7.91 and 585 points and Jayne Hardy 9.03 for 581 points maintained their dominance. Jayne Hardy and 642 points was to the fore, just, in the discus ahead of Chris McCahill and 635 points. Jan Banens scored 579 points and Sharon Gibbins for 555 points. Jayne Hardy was very pleased with her javelin for 692 points. This discipline saw a new name on the highest scores list with Tatiana Sudarikova (NSW35) throwing for 581 points followed by Christine Shaw with for 536 points. The weight, as is often the case, determines the winners. Chris McCahill for 994 points was unable to surpass Jayne Hardy for 881 points and Jayne won the age group points to Chris s with Glenys Whitehead on Other good weight scores were Jill Taylor and 829 points, Jan Banens 9.98 and 778 points and Althea Mackie for 732 points. Jan Banens 3637 points, Jill Taylor 3177 points and Sharon Gibbins 3129 points, won their respective age groups with good scores. Ron Simcock s hammer for 817 points led the men from Roger Glass for 798 points and Lajos Joni for 756 points. Ron Simcock s shot with 798 points continued to lead the way from Gavin Murray (NSW55) at for 735 points, Robert Hanbury-Brown for 715 and Jamie Muscat for 698 points. Jamie Muscat for 700 points led the discus from Robert Hanbury-Brown and 670 points, Gavin Murray

17 36.29 for 670 points and Ron Simcock for 669 points. Ron Simcock continued to dominate the points with a javelin of for 705 points from Bob Banens and 601 points and Robert Hanbury-Brown for 581 points. Ron Simcock for 881 points topped the points score in the weight throw from Roger Glass and 860 points and Robert Hanbury-Brown for 788 points and Lajos Joni and 788 points. Ron Simcock s total of was well ahead of all other men s age groups, the closest being Robert Hanbury-Brown on and Roger Glass on The Championship Dinner was well attended with 30 enjoying the fine selection of meats, salads and desserts. Ray Green surprised the Organising Committee by presenting each member with a small token of gratitude for work well done. DAY 3 : In many ways the last day of competition is the most fun while at the same time the most demanding because it consists of events rarely contested the Heavy Weight Pentathlon and the Super Heavyweights of 56lb and 100lb. If an athlete competed in all events on this day and had all available attempts they would throw unusual and heavy implements 27 times, different from 30 possible throws on day 1 with normal implements and 15 throws on day 2 with normal implements. And the weather gods were very kind. The day was clear blue all day with a soft breeze tempering the mid 20s sun. Sun screen was a necessity. The standout male athlete on day 3 was Stuart Gyngell. In the Heavy Weight Pentathlon he averaged over 900 points for each of the disciplines with a terrific 56lb throw of 9.83 for points and a total of Ron Simcock again showed his ability with an excellent total of Roger Glass also scored very well with John Reynolds points and Ray Green points had the closest competition of the day. The highest scoring female athlete was Chris McCahill averaging over 900 points for a total of Chris also had the highest individual discipline score, male or female with a 25lb throw of for points. Jan Banens with performed very well. The surprise packet in the Heavyweight Pentathlon was Jill Taylor with points, a terrific score. The women s 56lb weight throw saw Tatiana Sudarikova set the only Australian Record of the meet with a great throw of However this was not the longest women s throw. In another age group Althea Mackie reached Jayne hardy threw well for Lesley Dawson s (SA50) 2.83 was good as were Jill Taylor s 2.98 and Raylea Rudov s (ACT65) Unfortunately during the men s 56lb weight throw a chain link broke and the competition was abandoned. The women s 100lb weight throw was notable in only two competitors getting over 2.00, Tatiana Sudarikova with 2.19 and Jayne hardy with Kellie Watson (NSW35) 1.98 pushed Tatiana, as Chris McCahill 1.94 pushed Jayne. In the men s 100lb Stuart Gyngell 4.30 wasn t far behind the AR and Jamie Muscat 4.16 in a younger age group gave Stuart welcome competition. Aaron Schenk s (SA40) 3.34 was a pleasing throw as was Roger Glass s While there were few records set during the 2012 Winter Throwing Championships there were many standout performances. For the overall high level of their performances Jan Banens and Stuart Gyngell were awarded the female and male athlete of the meet awards respectively. Jan has now won the award twice, 1998 and 2012, as has Stuart, 2001 and The AMA Winter Throwing Championships continue to prosper. This year 16 athletes competed for the first time and over the past few years we have averaged over 60 athletes per year. This popularity is an outcome of the dedication of a small band of people committed to providing a quality Veteran/Masters event to athletes from Australia and overseas. Thank you Jayne Hardy, Raylea Rudov, Sharon Gibbins, Trish Thomas, Bryan Thomas, Barbara Burton and Stuart Reid. I will finish with visiting athlete and ex Modern Pentathlon Olympian, Cornel Vena, speaking of his Canberra experience: Once again I enjoyed a wonderful weekend of competition, meeting friends with whom I enjoy common interests. You and your committee deserve most sincere appreciation; not only the organisation of the competition was spotless, but the real atmosphere of good competition, and great results. It is a pity that other sporting groups here in Australia, and in particular those that have the power and the funding to do it, cannot even get close to what you have achieved to such a high standard. But ultimately there are only a few really interested people in the actual sport...we have the human material, Australians as a nation can achieve high results in any sport, however against the rest of the world, against many nations prepared to put the money and the necessary time coupled with expert coaches, we have Buckley s chance to be successful. In finishing these thoughts I can say that as far as the Veterans athletics, thanks to people like your group, we can keep our heads high against any nation in the world. My sincere thanks to everyone who attended the Championships, everyone who assisted getting the field ready each day and everyone who officiated during the meet. We appreciate your support. 19 Very knowledgeable information from George White South Australia Is peaking and tapering necessary for Masters Athletes? The simple answer is yes! While normally associated with top class athletes, there is no reason the concepts shouldn t apply to masters athletes the degree to which you apply them depends on how serious you are. At some stage most of us want to do well in a special race or championship; there may even be up to 3 or 4 important races to you in a year and your training should be geared to them. The main thing you are trying to avoid is leaving your best race on the training track. To peak correctly involves a series of phases that in simplest terms involves recovery, building a base, speed and then a taper before competition. The length of each phase will depend on whether you have an annual or more frequent target but they shouldn t be shorter than about 3 weeks each. While each of these phases may contain all or most training elements, the emphasis will change. In each phase, give your body chance to adapt and only change one variable at a time i.e. if you increase distance, do not increase speed and vice versa. Also, remember, too rapid an increase in distance or intensity could result in injury. Recovery The recovery phase would be dominated by rest, slow training and cross training. After an important race or season, rest is vital and may last from one to many weeks. Both your body and your mind need this rest! Remember the body repairs and strengthens itself in the time between training not in the training itself. The objective in this phase is to gradually return to training with low-intensity and moderate-duration activities. Easy to moderate, comfortable sessions are a good way to prepare for the season. Cycling and swimming are good options for cross training. Building A Base When you are refreshed, enter the base building phase which is dominated by steadily increasing longer distance. About half of the time between your start and your first target event should be spent in this phase which concentrates on easy to moderate endurance training. These workouts may feel too easy but don t make the mistake of going to hard - focus on improving technique and endurance. This phase is extremely important as it allows muscles, joints and tendons to get stronger slowly and adapt to increased loads and efforts. Use this time also to find shoes that suit, and food and drink that you can train with. Building Speed The speed phase will obviously introduce more fast training. During this time you are becoming more "race-specific" and you should increase training intensity. You should add interval work of high-intensity, shorter duration efforts. Your training volume may in fact stay the same but speed and intensity should go up and as there is a danger of injuries in this phase, it may be necessary to include more rest days. During this phase you may wish to bring in strength training to provide the extra power you need for a good result. Strength exercises up to three times a week will assist and need not take a lot of time.) Part of this phase could be simulating race conditions where you can focus on technique and strategy. If you are not already doing so, you may start competing in "lead-up" events to get used to actual competition and race-day conditions. The Taper Weekly totals should drop by half or more, while still maintaining intensity and concentrating on technique. Believe in what you have done in the previous weeks or months and do not be tempted to do too much in the last week or so. If you continue with a high volume of training it will result in minimal or no further improvement and may well be counter-productive and enter-ing a race tired, rather than fresh. If you want to stay active do more stretching. Your objective is to be in top condition physically, mentally and emotionally. Your high-intensity intervals should continue, but with fewer repeats. The final few days before the event can include some light aerobic exercise, but nothing too strenuous. During the taper it is essential to get proper nutrition that will fuel your race. Complex carbohy-drates should be your primary fuel and you should have already established what is you best pre-race meal. Don t worry too much about poor sleep the night before a race, it will have mini-mal impact on performance - it is the few nights before this that are more important. The length of the taper will depend on the race with a rough guideline being one week for a race of one hour or less and two weeks for longer races. Depending on your overall fitness, after the taper phase, your fitness could be maintained for one to several weeks, but at some stage it is important to return to the recovery phase.
