1 Determine Unit Rates based on Eight Different Animal Top Speeds Worksheets 6.RP.A.2 FREEBIE
2 This product includes eight animal unit rate problems. All of the problems were written as if the animals could run/fly/swim at top speed for extended periods of time. Although in real life, the animals are not able to maintain top speeds for extended periods. Students are asked to predict the animal speeds from slowest to fastest before they begin their calculations. When the task is complete, students determine how close the actual top speeds/hour were to their original prediction.
3 Speedy Animals Name: Date: What do you think? Make a prediction. Of the following eight animals listed below, rank them in order (slowest to fastest) according to speed. Which animal do you think has the slowest average top speed all the way to which animal has the fastest average top speed? Cheetah, Mouse, Octopus, Mosquito, Sea Turtle, Duck, Bear, Horse Fly Directions: Below, you will find eight different animals and their top average speed. For each animal, determine how many miles they travel per hour. Show your work. Animal Problem Solution The cheetah has an ability to accelerate quickly in three seconds. Suppose a cheetah could travel 1.5 hours at top speed covering miles. How far can a cheetah travel in one hour? Sometimes, people have a pet house mouse. If a mouse could travel at top speed, running miles in 2.5 hours, how far could it travel in one hour? Most octopi have no internal or external skeleton. If a highly intelligent octopus could travel 99.6 miles at top speed in 4 hours, how far would it travel in one hour? About 3,500 different species of mosquitoes exist in the world. If a mosquito traveled 10.8 miles at top speed in 9 hours, how far did it travel in one hour?
4 Animal Problem Solution Sea turtles are strong swimmers. A sea turtle cannot retract its head under its shell like a land turtle. If a sea turtle traveled 2.8 miles at top speed in 2 hours, how far did it travel in one hour? A mallard duck is 56 to 65 centimeters long. If the duck traveled 97.8 miles at top speed in 1.5 hours, how far did it travel in one hour? A brown bear can weigh 220 to 1,500 pounds. Suppose a bear traveled 65.1 miles at top speed in 3 hours. How far could the bear travel in one hour? A horse-fly can be extremely noisy during flight. In addition to being a pest, a horse-fly pollinates flowers. If a horse-fly traveled miles at top speed in 2 hours, how far did it fly in one hour? Now that you have found your unit rate calculations, list the animals in order from slowest to fastest according to their top average speed. How close were you to your prediction? Cheetah, Mouse, Octopus, Mosquito, Sea Turtle, Duck, Bear, Horse Fly Reflection: Describe how you find the unit rate?
