B. GENERAL INFORMATION 1. Selections will be made by the Age Group Selection Commission based on the criteria outlined in this policy. 2. It is the athlete s responsibility to enter the nominated selection event/s through the event website. 3. Selection nomination forms MUST be received by Triathlon New Zealand (Tri NZ) no later than 2 working days following the nominated selection race. This rule will be strictly enforced. 4. To be eligible for selection in a Tri NZ National Age Group Team, you MUST on selection race day: 4.1. International Triathlon Union (ITU) Constitutional rules apply to naturalised persons and those with dual citizenship. If you have any doubt regarding eligibility to compete for New Zealand, please contact the Triathlon New Zealand Office for clarification. 5. Age group categorisation will be based on an athlete s age as at 31 December on the year of the World Championship event. Age groups for male and females will be: 18-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, older age group competitors will also be considered. The nominated selection event will use your age as at 31 December 2018 for selection into the appropriate age group category. 6. Age-Group Teams are self-financed. By submitting a selection nomination form and accepting selection to a National Age-Group Team you acknowledge that you will be responsible for funding your own travel, accommodation, race entry, uniform and administrative costs. Due to the desire to create a great team culture and to enhance team management, selected athletes are encouraged to stay at the nominated team accommodation. A breakdown of fees will be provided to you by the Tri NZ office at the time of selection announcement. 7. It is the responsibility of you, the athlete to ensure your selection nomination form and/or special circumstance form has been received by Tri NZ within the set-out deadlines. 8. On announcement of the team each athlete is required to provide Tri NZ physical evidence of 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 as of selection race day; to pay a Tri NZ Team Administration Fee ($275NZD); and complete an athlete agreement to confirm their position in the team. 9. Upon accepting a position on an Age Group team, you agree to abide by the rules set out by the ITU and Tri NZ regarding insurance. C. MAXIMUM NATIONAL AGE GROUP TEAM SIZE The maximum National Age Group Team size is determined by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Competition Rules. These rules allow Tri NZ to select up to 20 males and 20 females per age group. D. SELECTION COMMISSION The role of assessing athletes against the selection criteria is the responsibility of the Tri NZ Age Group Selection
Commission, which is appointed by the Tri NZ Board.
E. SELECTION CRITERIA ITU Standard Distance Triathlon World Championships: Gold Coast, September 2018 Selection Channel ITU slots available per AG Primary event 12 Secondary event 6 Special Circumstance 2 The nominated primary selection event is: The New Zealand Standard Distance National Championship Corsair Classic, Christchurch, Sunday 28 January 2018 The first 12 eligible athletes in each age-group to cross the line at the above nominated selection race will gain automatic selection, if their finishing time is within 20% of first place in their respective age-group. Triathlon New Zealand has selected the following events as a secondary selection races Tinman Triathlon Sunday 26th November 2017 The first 6 eligible athletes in each age-group to cross the line at the above nominated selection race will gain automatic selection, if their finishing time is within 20% of first place in their respective age-group. In the circumstance that a winner of an age group be 10 minutes or more ahead of the second-place athlete, the 20% allowance will be taken from the second placed athlete. E.g. time of first place athlete is 3:00:00 and second place is 3:15:00, the 20% will be taken from the 3:15:00 time. The remaining available slots (2) will be determined by selector discretion following special circumstance procedures refer to F. Special Circumstance Applications below. Athletes that podium (1st, 2nd or 3rd) at an official ITU World Championship event (while representing New Zealand) will be granted special circumstance entry into the same team the following year. This is provided they can prove ongoing dedication and maintained physical fitness. Athletes who qualify by this method must submit their special circumstance form within two working days of the final selection event. If an athlete qualifies by this method, the number of special circumstance slots for the age group will reduce accordingly. For example, if in the women s age group, a NZ athlete places third, there will only be 1 special consideration slot available for the following year s selection race in that distance. Should the number of athletes who meet the criteria at the qualifying races be less than the allocated slots (18 in this instance), the number special circumstance spots will revert to the original allocation (in this case 2). To be eligible for a roll down slot your time at the nominated qualification race must be within 20% of the winners of your age group. In certain cases, when allocating discretionary places, the selectors may request an athlete to carry out a fitness trial. Selector s discretion is not used for late selection applications. F. SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCE APPLICATIONS Athletes who claim special circumstances will be required to provide race results; these must be the distances/discipline the application is being made for. All race results must show the applicants finishing within 20% of first place in their respective age-group of the event (e.g ) and be no more than 6 months old unless the athlete is based in the northern hemisphere, whereby this will be 12 months due to the different timing of the triathlon season.
The form must be fully completed and provide all the detail required in the first instance as incomplete applications will be declined. Special circumstance applications will be open to athletes in the following instances: i. Athletes who have entered a selection event and their performance was adversely affected by illness/injury/mechanical problems. The athlete must complete and submit their special circumstance form online within 2 working days of the selection race that they had entered and for which their performance was affected. ii. Athletes based overseas Tri NZ encourages all athletes based overseas to compete in the nominated selection event/s as the primary selection method, but if circumstances prevent the athlete travelling to New Zealand to attend the selection event they may still be considered for special circumstance selection. Athletes based overseas: Must be a current member of Tri NZ (TRIBE); and a citizen of New Zealand Must complete the online application no later than March 31 st Must provide written evidence of their overseas address during the NZ selection season upon request from Triathlon NZ. Membership with an affiliated New Zealand triathlon club is strongly encouraged but is not compulsory. iii. Inability to compete at any selection event due to health/surgery/other extenuating circumstances. The athlete must complete and submit their special circumstance form online no later than March 31 st iv. Junior / U23 athletes Athletes who have raced in Junior Elites or Under 23 selection races but not age group selection races will not receive automatic selection into age group teams. For such athletes, a special circumstance form must be completed no later than March 31 st A Special Circumstance Application does not guarantee selection; selection is subject to selector discretion. G. TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT Tri NZ will endeavour to notify the automatic age group selection athletes of their place in the team within 10 days of a selection event. If a team place is not taken by one of the automatic qualifiers, a roll down process will occur for eligible athletes outside the automatic selection slot allowance but within the 20% time limit of the first place getter in their respective age group. If practicable, Tri NZ will announce the full provisional Age Group Team (excluding Special Circumstance Application announcements) within 30 days of the Final Selection race. By this time, the athlete will have been required to formally accept their position on the team and have paid their Team Admin Fee (NZD275). The provisional team list will be posted on the Tri NZ website, but official confirmation will be sent by to each individual member. Tri NZ will endeavour to announce Special Circumstance Application outcome announcements within 10 days following the close of applications. Upon announcement of the outcome, athletes will have 7 days to formally accept their position on the team and pay their Team Admin Fee (NZD275). H. APPEALS If an athlete feels they have been erroneously excluded from selection, they should contact the Age Group Experience Manager (Chair of the Selection Commission) within 7 days of the public announcement of the team in question to request a review of their selection status. Any aggrieved person may appeal against a decision of the selectors
because the selection policy was not properly followed or implemented. Any appeal against a decision of the selectors must be lodged within 7 days of the Age Group Experience Manager s review. To lodge an appeal, the aggrieved athlete must write an application to the Community Director of Tri NZ accompanied by the prescribed fee of $100 (GST inclusive). The Community Director will commission a Tri NZ Age Group Adjudicator to review the appeal. The application for appeal must set out: 1. The decision of the selectors in which you believe the selection policy was not followed or implemented; 2. The grounds upon which the appeal is made; and 3. The reasons or circumstances supporting the alleged grounds of appeal. A full description of the role of a nominated independent adjudicator, and its functions and is available upon request from the Tri NZ head office.
