2 YVES HAMELIN Short track program director Born: May 13, 1959, Grand-Mère, Que. Hometown: Proulxville, Que. Training centre: Maurice-Richard Arena, Montreal Highlights Yves joined SSC as short track program director in August 2006 He was the Canadian short track team leader for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, leading his team to five medals. Coaching Yves started coaching at the age of 31, working first developing young skaters and then moved to elite athletes with the CPV Montreal International He is a certified Level III coach He coached at two World Junior Championships (2004 and 2005), winning two gold medals, two silver and two bronze He also coached at two World Cups In , four of his six skaters qualified for the national junior team He was named Quebec s 2005 Development Coach of the Year at the Lauréats Montréalais Gala, and was nominated for 2002, 2003 and 2004 He was named 2003 Coach of the Year by the Fédération de patinage de vitesse du Québec. 3 FRÉDÉRIC BLACKBURN National women s team coach Born: Dec. 21, 1972, Saguenay, Que. Hometown: Chicoutimi, Que. Training centre: Maurice-Richard Arena, Montreal season Frédéric is entering his third season as a coach with Canada s national teams, and first as women s head coach He will work with Jeff Scholten to coach 16 national and development women s teams skaters He will focus on the nine women on the national team season Coaching the men s development, Frédéric had Alexandre St. Jean and Charle Cournoyer compete in two World Cups, Gabriel Chiasson-Poirier in one and Liam McFarlane in two World Cups and the 2012 World Championships McFarlane was a world champion and World Cup title season winner in the relay. He also won his first individual World Cup medal, a silver in the 500 metre, and a gold and silver in the relay In Cournoyer first World Cup, number three in Nagoya (Dec. 2-4), he earned a bronze medal in his first race, the 1,500 metres. Taking a silver medal in the relay at World Cup #4, he also earned the season relay World Cup title. Cournoyer was also named SSC s 2012 Rising Star for short track Frédéric was the men s coach at World Cups #3 and #4 this past season. Other seasons Frédéric is an NCCP Level IV coach He received SSC s Coaching Excellence Award in 2010 He was named 2010 Coach of the Year by the Fédération de Patinage de vitesse du Québec He worked as production manager for Apex Racing Skates for several years He coached with the Montreal St. Michel Club before joining the national teams program. Skater Frédéric was a member of the national short track team from 1990 to 2005, but was injured from 1998 to 2001 He was double Olympic medalist in Albertville in 1992 (1,000 and relay) He won the overall silver medal at 1994 World Championships and took the bronze in 1995 He also competed at the Lillehammer 1994 Olympics He competed in World Cup #6 in , placing ninth in the 1,500 and winning the silver medal in the relay He was first overall at the 1993 and 1994 Canadian Open Championships and second in 1995 and1996. 4 DERRICK CAMPBELL National men s team coach Born: Feb. 18, 1972, Cambridge, Ont. Hometown: Cambridge, Ont. Training centre: Maurice-Richard Arena, Montreal season Derrick is entering his sixth season as a coach with Canada s national teams He will work with Laurent Daignault to coach 15 national and development men s teams skaters He will focus on the eight men on the national team season Derrick was the men s national team coach at the 2012 World Championships and four of six World Cups National men s team members were relay world champions and won the World Cup relay title During six World Cups, the relay teams won two gold medals, two silver and a bronze His skaters won 10 World Cup gold medals, six silver and five bronze At the world championships, the men earned one individual gold medal, one silver and two bronze. Other seasons Derrick is an NCCP Level IV coach He was named SSC s 2011 Male Coach of the Year and received the award in 2010 along with other Olympic team coaches He coached the men s team to relay gold at Vancouver 2010 Olympics, as well as a gold and bronze medals in the 500 metres He was a finalist for coach of the year at 2008 Canadian Sport Awards He was named the 2007 Coach of the Year, awarded by the Fédération de patinage de vitesse du Québec He was the recipient of the Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Award in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011 He was the team leader and coach for U.S. Olympic team in Skater Derrick was a member of the Canadian national team from 1989 to 2000 He won the gold medal in the relay at the Nagano 1998 Olympics He also competed at the 1992 and 1994 Olympics He competed in eight world championships, winning five individual medals and five in the relay He was third overall and world champion in the 500 metres at the 1997 World Championships He was the ISU skaters representative from 1998 to Quick facts Derrick s Interests include golf, cars, music and spending time with family and friends. 60

5 JONATHON CAVAR National team coach Born: May 27, 1977, Ottawa Hometown: Ottawa Training centre: The Olympic Oval, Calgary season Jonathon is entering his sixth season as a coach with Canada s national teams He will work primarily national team member Gabrielle Waddell and development team skater Keri Morrison, who will be training out of The Olympic Oval in Calgary season In addition to working with other short track skaters at The Olympic Oval, Jonathon coached national team member Gabrielle Waddell in her second international senior season She was named to the team for the World Championships in Shanghai (March 9-11), but did not skate She was only one of two national team members to compete in all six World Cups At the Canadian Open Championship in Saguenay (Jan ), she placed a career-high fourth overall. She won a silver medal in the 3,000, was fourth in the 1,500, fifth in the 1,000, and eighth in the 500 Gabrielle s final Canadian ranking was also a career-high fourth. Other seasons Jonathon was the recipient of the SSC s 2010 Male Coach of the Year award, along with other Vancouver 2010 Olympics team coaches He was co-coach of the silver medalist women s relay team at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics He is a NCCP Level III coach and a charter member of Professional Coaches Prior to joining the national team program, he coached part-time with Montreal-International Club for four years. Skater Jonathon was Canadian short track champion in 1998 He was a national and development teams athlete for five years He was the first Canadian to win a medal, silver in the 500 metres, at the inaugural 1994 World Junior Short Track Championships in Seoul He was a member of the Gloucester Concordes Speed Skating Club in Ottawa. Quick facts Jonathon s leisure activities include wilderness camping, soccer and learning to play the guitar His sister Valerie was on the short track team at the Nagano 1998 Olympics He graduated from Concordia University in 2002 with a Bachelor s degree in exercise science. 61

6 LAURENT DAIGNAULT National men s team coach Born: Oct. 30, 1968, Montreal Hometown: Montreal Training centre: Maurice-Richard Arena, Montreal season Since the Vancouver 2010 Olympics until recently, Laurent served as an equipment technician with the national short track teams He returns to a coaching position with Canada s national men s teams... Laurent will work with Derrick Campbell to coach 16 national and development men s teams skaters He will focus on the men s development team season Laurent served as the national and development short track teams equipment technician, travelling to the six World Cups and World Championships. Other seasons Laurent coached on the short track national team from 1995 to He coached Canada at the Lillehammer 1998 Olympics and Salt Lake City 2002 Olympics. He also served as an equipment technician at the Torino 2006 Olympics... He coached two world junior champions Jean- François Monette in 1996 and François-Louis Tremblay in Skater Laurent was a member of the Canadian national team from 1988 to 1996 He was a silver medalist in the relay at the Albertville 1992 Olympics... Laurent started speed skating at the age of eight. 7 JEFFREY SCHOLTEN National women s team coach Born: Nov. 6, 1977, Fredericton, N.B. Hometown: Fredericton, N.B. Training centre: Maurice-Richard Arena, Montreal season Jeffrey is entering his third season as a coach with Canada s national teams, joining in May 2010 He will work with Frédéric Blackburn to coach 16 national and development women s teams skaters He will focus on the seven women on the development team season Coaching the women s development, Jeffrey had four skaters take part in World Cups recording four top 10 finishes Development team skaters Vanessa Bélanger-Marceau, Sabrina Bourgela and Andréa Do-Duc each competed in two World Cups, and Kasandra Bradette took part in three Jeffrey was the women s coach at World Cups #3 and #4 this past season. Other seasons After retiring from competitive speed skating in 2008, Jeffrey served as an equipment technician with the national team for two seasons He was a member of the team s support staff at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics He is an NCCP Level III coach. Skater Jeffrey was on the national and development short track teams for eight years, from 2000 to 2007 He set five world records during his career, two at the Canadian Open Championships in 2000 His highlights in World Cup competition include winning gold, silver and bronze medals in the 500 metres and silver in the 3,000 He was a gold medalist in the 500 metres and silver medalist in 1,000 at 2003 FISU Games He participated in two world championships and was a gold medalist at a World Team Championships He was named Athlete of the Year by Speed Skating New Brunswick in Quick facts Jeffrey started speed skating at the age of five He enjoys playing soccer during his leisure time. 63

Club: CPV Rivière-du-Loup (Les Loupiots) International senior seasons: 5 ( ) Coaches: Derrick Campbell and Laurent Daignault Season This was his fifth international senior season At his first world championships in Shanghai (March 9-11), he ranked ninth overall, placing sixth in the 500 and 1,000 and ninth in the 1,500. He was world champion taking the gold medal with the relay team After competing in four of six World Cups, his season classifications were: 11th in the 500 (2 races); eighth in the 1,000 (2 races); 33rd in the 1,500 (2 races); and, first in the relay. He won his second career World Cup gold medal in the 1,000 in World Cup #6 in Dordrecht (Feb ). He also won his second career silver medal in the second 500 race at World Cup #2 in Saguenay (Oct ). With the relay team, he won two gold, a silver and bronze medal At the Canadian Open Championships in Saguenay (Jan ), he ranked fifth overall.
