Victoria lives and breathes sport, and no one puts on a show like we do. We re home to some of the biggest events in the world including the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, Melbourne s famous Spring Racing Carnival and the Australian Open tennis. While competition is important, one of the best things about the Melbourne Challenge Triathlon is the camaraderie and enjoyment experienced by everyone involved. Hosting the Melbourne Challenge Triathlon and doing it so well is part of what makes Victoria the sporting capital. Events like these draws visitors from far and wide, keeping our bars, restaurants, and hotels busy, while boosting our visitor economy. They also provide an opportunity to shine the spotlight on our world-class sports and entertainment venues. That is why we re proud to support the Melbourne Challenge Triathlon and help stage this fantastic event here in St Kilda. When you re not at the triathlon, I encourage everyone to explore the many things our beautiful state has to offer. 3 WELCOME TO PICKLE JUICE CHALLENGE MELBOURNE 2018 Welcome to Pickle Juice Challenge Melbourne 2018 in St Kilda. This years event will see athletes swim underneath the iconic St Kilda Pier, Then tackle the picturesque 3 lap bike course down to Black Rock before taking on the 2 lap run course taking athletes all the way to Brighton. Challenge Sprint is back again and will be taking off after the main event and we launch the inaugural Junior Challenge for children aged We would like to thank all our event partners and the authorities for supporting the staging of such a major event in Melbourne. We would also like to thank all the TA officials, triathlon clubs, Elwood Lifesaving club and 100 s of marshals that help us make this race happen. 5 PRE-RACE INFORMATION PRE-EVENT BIKE CHECK We recommend that all bikes and helmets are checked prior to the event. Athletes will have their equipment briefly inspected prior to entering the bike compound on race morning. Spokes Mobile Bike Mechanic will be set up at the Challenge Melbourne venue from 11:00am-4:00pm on Saturday 8 th April and again from 5:00am on race morning for any last-minute bike checks. Half Distance: Seat Post sticker received in the race kit must be applied to your equipment prior to entering the bike compound on Saturday. Helmet and Wristband stickers must be applied before heading into the compound on race morning. The bike post sticker needs to be clearly visible and must not be altered or cut in any way and the helmet sticker placed on the right side of your helmet. Sprint Distance: All bikes and helmet stickers received in the race kit must be applied to your equipment prior to entering the bike compound on race morning RACE REGISTRATION Registration is open at the Registration Marquee from 12:00pm 4:00pm on Saturday 20 th April and again from 5:00am on Sunday 22 nd April; race day. All competitors in the half distance must collect their race kits and check their bike in on Saturday unless they have sought permission for Sunday. To collect your race kit from registration you may be asked to present photo ID as well as your e-ticket, which will be ed to you on Thursday at 5:30pm. RACE KITS Each race kit includes; Ankle Timing Band Race Belt - to attach race bib Race Bib - to be visible from the front during the run course Swim Cap - must be worn during the swim Helmet Sticker - to be placed on the right-hand side of the helmet Bike Post Sticker - race number facing to either side of the bike. The bike post sticker is important as it is used for timing the bike leg. (Elites will also have a Yellow 20m Drafting Seat Post Sticker) Security wristband - for access to bike compound on race morning Race belts must be worn to the front during the run leg. Race bib numbers must be clearly visible at all times from the rear on the bike course and from the front on the run course. Failure to display numbers can result in disqualification. Race Numbers are to be written on the side of the Right Arm. The category letter is to be written on the Right Calf. The security ID wristband must be worn to check in and to remove your bike from the transition area at the completion of the race. Baggage tags, attached to your race bib must be looped around the bag strap before entering the bag compound. Please ensure that you do not bend or break the timing chip attached to your bike post sticker as this will provide your splits on the cycle course. Do not adjust the Seat Post Sticker. Cutting the seat post sticker will affect the ability of the timing equipment to read the chips and lap times are not recorded. Any ankle band timing chips which are lost, broken or not returned at the completion of the race will incur a $50.00 AUD fee. If you withdraw during the race, please return your ankle timing band to the finish line collection area.

6 LIVE RACE UPDATES Challenge Melbourne will feature an extensive timing system for athletes and spectators. With live results being fed to the Challenge Melbourne website, and the SME360 Results Hub on site, everyone has access to their favourite athlete s results. As an athlete, you will pass through over 15 timing points on the course including: - Swim time as you exit the water - Bike splits every 15k - T1 and T2 splits - Run splits every 5km - Finishers Certificate and Results Certificate featuring all splits This event will feature multiple timing technologies, to make sure that no one misses out on getting their results. Make sure you check out your photos from Race Atlas which will be ed for purchase post-event. PRE RACE ATHLETE BRIEFING We have provided an athlete video briefing for you to watch at your leisure. You can view the latest pre-race briefing video HERE. We will also have a short briefing with event updates at the Race Start on St Kilda Beach at 6:35am on Sunday morning for the half distance and 7:50am for the sprint distance. The pre-race briefing is compulsory for all athletes. As well as an overview of the course and key rules and regulations, you will also be advised of any last-minute changes that many differ from the information published in this document or on the web site. The briefing will be conducted in English. CHALLENGE EXPO There is an Expo of sponsors and exhibitor displays at the Catani Garden venue on Saturday between 10:00am - 4:00pm and again on Sunday from 5:00am. You can purchase any last-minute gear needs, sample sponsor products and purchase official race merchandise. 8 RACE INFORMATION SWIM COURSE INFORMATION The 1.9km swim course will start out the front of the St Kilda Sea Baths. Participants will swim 1.4km out the front of the St Kilda Sea Baths and areas in front of Luna Park before heading North and crossing beneath the iconic St Kilda Pier that will no doubt be packed with spectators. The 1.9km Swim will then be completed within the St Kilda Pier itself, making for a spectacular swim and short T1. Challenge Melbourne participants will be well looked after by Elwood Life Saving Club. Challenge Melbourne has a beach start, please make sure you pass under the swim start sign to enter the athlete only area prior to your wave start. Elite Male race start is followed by the Elite Female start. Age group waves will commence 1 minutes after the Elite Female start and every 3 min thereafter. Wave starts will consist of approximately 200 athletes. Position yourself where you feel most comfortable. Once the swimmers have completed the swim, they head towards the Transition Area in Catani Gardens. Participants will have access to an Aid Station before completing T1. The transition area includes a change tent and toilet for athletes to utilise during T1. Athletes must not leave any belongings in the change tent. If you wear glasses, please hand to the designated volunteer in the swim start area who will place them on a table at the swim exit for you to pick up without delay. Please ensure they are numbered with your race number. If for any reason you are unable to start the swim, you must hand your ankle timing band in at the Registration Marquee prior to the race start. SPRINT DISTANCE SWIM 700m Sprint Distance competitors will complete a 700m rectangular swim within the St Kilda Pier. For a course map please see the interactive map. RACE RULES - SWIM 1 Compulsory gear includes the swim cap (provided by Challenge Melbourne). The swim may be altered or added to at the race briefing subject to the water conditions, temperature and swim course/distance (at the race director s absolute discretion). 2. A wetsuit swim is predicted with current water temperature and conditions 3. No fins, paddles, snorkels, flotation devices of any kind are permitted. 4. Swim goggles or face masks may be worn. 5. Any assistance required during swim may result in disqualification unless such assistance did not aid the swimmer in making forward progress. 6. Swim course will close 1 hour from race start for individuals and teams. 7. The race director has the right to change the location of the swim course, the distance of the swim course or cancel the swim course (at their absolute discretion) taking into account the weather and water temperature conditions. 8. If an athlete should decide to quit the race during the swim leg he/she must report immediately to the race director or the course marshals. If this does not happen and rescue operations occur, the athlete will be responsible for all costs. 9. After swimming, the competitors must place all their belongings within their allocated bike racking area. If the competitor disregards this requirement and impedes another competitor in transition, a penalty may be added to the overall T1 time. 10. 10 TRANSITION AREA Helmets must be attached to bikes in the transition area. Shoes, including socks, may also be attached to the bike. Athletes must put on and fasten their helmets before un-racking their bike. No cycling is allowed within the transition area. Bikes must be pushed from the racks to the mount mat. At the finish of the bike leg; competitors must dismount at the mat and push their bike back to their rack. Please note your time in transition is part of your overall time time is of the essence! Please note these instructions are for individual athletes only teams should refer to the teams section at the end of this manual. BIKE COURSE INFORMATION 90km Once participants have collected their bikes in the Transition Area, they run with their bikes towards the Mount Line on Pier Rd. Beginning an out-and-back course that starts by initially heading North for the first of three 30km laps of the 90km bike course. Cyclists then head southbound past Sandringham turning at Black Rock, along a fully closed Beach Rd, returning to St Kilda. 1st and 2nd lap cyclists perform a U-turn in front of the venue & crowd at Cowderoy St, St Kilda to commence their next lap. 3rd lap cyclists will turn left off Beach Rd into Catani Gardens to dismount, making their way into the Transition Area. Water Bottles and 32GI Electrolyte Bottles will be available on the bike leg prior to completing the first and second laps. Gels for cycle will have to be taken out by the athlete themselves, from what is provided with their kit. PLEASE NOTE: All participants yet to reach the roundabout in Blackrock by 10:55am will be turned early to return to the venue, but will still be allowed to complete the full run leg. SPRINT DISTANCE BIKE 30km Sprint Distance competitors will complete the same course as the Half Distance but will complete only one lap of the course instead of three. All drafting and other rules remain the same. CYCLE AID STATION 1 Cycle Aid Station will be available towards the completion of each 30km lap (28KM, 58KM) on the three lap cycle course Drink Bottles will be available to swap with empty bottles. Please dispose of your empty bottle in the signed area prior to approaching the aid station. The cycle leg aid station will have the following nutrition supplies, in the order below: Water Bottles Electrolyte Bottles Anyone seen littering may be disqualified. TA officials will be at each aid station strictly enforcing this. All products will be served in drink bottles on the understanding that athletes will return empty bottles at the same time. No bottle, no drink. There is a bottle drop zone immediately prior to each aid station. Please do not drop bottles in any other place on course. Anyone seen dropping bottles outside of the drop zones may be disqualified. Please discard empty drink bottles into a net prior to the station. When approaching the aid station, you must slow your speed to protect the volunteers handing out the drink bottles. If you are not stopping you must ride on the right-hand side of the road. Please remember that the marshals handing out drink bottles are volunteers and dissent will not be tolerated.

11 MECHANICAL SUPPORT ON BIKE COURSE No personal bike support is allowed however the Spokes mechanical assistance marquee will be situated out on course, to provide assistance. They will have limited supplies and are for serious mechanical failures only. It is your responsibility to carry spare tubes and canisters (and know how to use them!) in case of punctures. Please note you will be charged for any parts used during on-course technical support, however the support service will be free of charge. A Spokes Bike Mechanic will be positioned at the Cycle Aid Station near the completion of each lap. RACE RULES BIKE 1. No drafting is permitted. The cycle draft zone is 20 metres for Elite competitors, and 12 metres for Age Group competitors, measured from the leading edge of the front wheel. Elite competitors have 30 seconds to pass through the draft zone, and Age Group competitors have 25 seconds to pass through the draft zone. Once an athlete has been passed they must immediately commence to drop back out of the draft zone. A re-pass may be attempted only after the passed athlete has dropped out of the draft zone. 2. The following helmet standards are required: ASTM - F , Australia and NZ Standards - S/NZS 2063:1996 or NZS 5439 or AS2063.2, Snell-B90 or B95, CE European Standards-EN1078, US Consumer Products Safety Standards - USCPS. 3. Helmets must be secured by the chin strap before unracking the bike, and must remain fastened until the cyclist has re-racked the bike. 4. Each participant is responsible for the state or repair of his/her own bike. Assistance by anyone other than official technical support personnel will be grounds for immediate disqualification. This disallows the use of spare wheels and back-up bikes and requires that each competitor be prepared to handle any possible mechanical malfunction. Participant may run/walk their bike if necessary. 5. Cyclists are expected to heed directions and instructions of all race officials and public authorities. 6. Competitors must keep as far to the left as is practically possible at all times, pass others on the right and must obey all directions of Event officials and the Police. There will be full road closures in place until 11:30am. Crossing the centre line is prohibited and is a red card offence which may result in disqualification. 7. The act of drafting and/or passing on the left is a Blue Card time penalty. The athlete will be shown a Blue Card by a technical official and will be required to report to the penalty box near completion of lap to serve a five minute penalty. A second Blue Card will result in a further five minute penalty. A third Blue Card penalty will result in a further five minute penalty and may result in disqualification. 8. The race director has the right to change the location of the bike course or the distance of the bike course (at their absolute discretion) and taking into account the weather and course conditions. Overtaking: An athlete is passed when another athlete's front wheel is ahead of theirs; Once overtaken, an athlete must immediately commence to drop out of the Draft Zone of the leading athlete. Athletes must keep to the side of the course and not create a blocking incidence. Blocking is where an athlete who is behind cannot pass due to the leading athlete being poorly placed on the course.

12 SLIP LANE INFORMATION There will be a resident access slip lane on the cycle course to allow residents to leave and return to their houses. The slip lane will be in operation in the Southbound lane towards Black Rock, where participants will have one lane and cyclist will have one lane. On the return, heading northbound there will be a resident access lane in place from Brighton Baths to Head St in the St Kilda St section of the course. Again, there will be one lane for bikes and 1 lane for cars when travelling in both north and south bound directions. Remember to stay to the right-hand side of the cones when in a slip lane section as seen in the image. Click the image to see an enlarged copy. CORRECT HELMET Technical Officials will be checking helmets as you enter the compound. Click the image below for a video guide to correct helmet use. Safety Recommendations Competitors must be able to carry 2 drink bottles on their bike. Both the cycle and the run course aid stations are provided to assist you in staying hydrated and alert during the event. Please make use of the products provided or ensure that you come prepared with your own hydration/nutrition items. Medical Recommendations If you are over 35 years of age, it is strongly recommended that you have a medical check-up prior to the event. There will be a medical team on site during Challenge Melbourne as well as support from Ambulance Victoria both in the venue and out on course. If you require medical assistance during this event or notice another competitor who may require assistance, please notify the next event marshal.

13 RUN COURSE INFORMATION 21.1 km The run heads out of transition and along the beach pathway towards Brighton. The run course is a 2 lap 21.1km course; each lap just over 10.55km in length. Runners will run along the beach path turning just after the Elwood Boat Ramp. Please note that Challenge Sprint athletes will be turning at the Elwood Surf Life Saving Club. As you pass the SLSC, please keep right and continue to the Elwood Boat Ramp. Runners will head back towards the venue on the road side of the bay trail before running in front of the St Kilda Sea Baths. As athletes enter the venue, 1st lap runners will keep left around the Catani Gardens Rotunda turning left to commence their next lap. On completion of the 2nd lap athletes keep right and will be directed to continue to the finish chute and across the finish line, where athletes can claim the victory of conquering Challenge Melbourne and celebrate with their Challenge Family Beer. 7 Aid Stations per lap on a 2 lap course 0KM, 1.8KM, 3KM, 4.8KM, 5.7KM, 7.7KM, 8.7KM, 10.5KM, 12.3KM, 13.5KM, 15.3KM, 16.2KM, 18.2KM, FINISH RECOVERY AREA All Aid Stations will have Water and 32Gi Electrolyte, & Cola. Alternating Aid Stations will have halved Bananas OR Carman's Bars. The 0km and 10.5km Aid Station will have Pickle Juice Shots, Degani Cold Press Coffee Shots, and Red Bull. Please ensure any personal nutrition carried out on course is disposed of at aid stations, particularly gel wrappers. Thank you for your help in keeping City of Port Phillip and Bayside City beautiful. CHALLENGE SPRINT RUN 7km The run heads out of transition on the same track as the Half Distance. Participants will turn before the Half Distance participants at the Elwood Surf Life Saving Club. Please look for the signage directing sprint athletes to turn. For the course and aid station details, please view the interactive map. RACE RULES RUN 1. Competitors must not alter the size or appearance of the race bib number, and must wear it clearly and visibly on their front. 2. Slower competitors must keep to the left with other competitors overtaking on the right. 3. Runners must stay on the course at all times, except as aid stations or to use the toilet facilities. 4. No individual support vehicles or non-participant escort runners or cyclists are allowed. Friends, family members, coaches or supporters of any type may not bike, drive or run alongside competitors, may not pass food or other items to competitors and should be warned to stay completely clear of all participants to avoid the disqualification of a participant. Runners are expected to follow the directions and instructions of all race officials and public authorities. 5. Outside assistance, other than by a Race Official, is an infringement of the rules and may incur a time penalty. 6. The race director has the right to change the location of the run course or the distance of the run course (at their absolute discretion) and taking into account the weather and course conditions. CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT Challenge Melbourne is working ensure that the event has a minimum impact on the local environment. All cups, bags and bottles are recyclable and we ask you to avoid littering this beautiful landscape. Please leave all energy bar wrappers at the aid stations with the volunteers rather than discarding them along the course, anyone caught littering on the course will be disqualified.

14 ANTI-DOPING TEAMChallenge operates a zero tolerance policy to performance-enhancing drugs. No athlete may use any substances or procedures with the intention to improve performance, eliminate fatigue or any other purpose. Violation of this rule will result in instant disqualification. Random drug tests may be performed. TEAM INFORMATION Each relay team will receive a race kit with three wristbands and one ankle timing band. This ankle timing band represents the relay baton and therefore must be handed over to the next team number. Failure to do so will result in disqualification. Swim to Cycle Changover N o n - c y c l i s t s a r e n o t p e r m i t t e d t o e n t e r t h e t r a n s i t i o n a r e a. The timing band must be handed over to the cyclist in the team s transition area on the southern end of transition, otherwise a penalty of four minutes may be added to the team s time. Drinks for swimmers are available at the Recovery Area. Cyclists Start: Wait in the team transition area for your swimmer to come in. You must take over the timing band from the swimmer within the teams area outside transition, otherwise four minute penalty may be added to the team s time. Cycle finish: You must hand over the timing band to the runner within the teams area outside transition, after you have safely racked your bike. Please note that if you exceed the time limit of 4:15 hrs for the swim and Cycle Leg, the race director has the right to remove your team from the race. Runners Cyclist update: W e suggest you arrive in the teams transition area to wait for your cyclist with plenty of time to spare Start: You must take over the timing band from the cyclist within the team transition area. Once you have tagged your team-mate, please leave the team transition immediately to leave space for other competitors. Accompanying participants on the race course, especially on the cycling and running course is strictly prohibited and may lead to the disqualification of the respective participant. No outside assistance is permitted. Team Meeting Point for Finish Swim and bike relay team members can meet up with their run team member at the top of the finish chute (near the rotunda), at the family and friend s area. All three team members may then run along the chute, complete the victory lap and cross the finish line together. Please note you will be directed by marshals, to ensure that you do not heed the path of other competitors.

15 GENERAL RACE RULES 1. At all times competitors must obey the instructions of Race Officials and Police Officers and beware of vehicular transport. Any competitor who fails to obey the instructions of Race officials or the Police will be removed from the Event and disqualified. The race director and race referee have the discretion to disqualify competitors. 2. While a full road closure will be in place for the duration of the cycle lag, public access, residential, emergency and Event vehicles will be using the course. Please be careful and mindful of your surroundings. 4. The Event Medical or Safety Team will have ultimate discretion and the final decision as to the suitability of a competitor to continue in the Event, and likewise if they should be withdrawn from the Event. 5. No competitor may use any banned substances with the intent to improve their performance, eliminate the sense of fatigue or for any other purpose. Random doping tests may be performed. 6. It is important that all competitors exhibit good behaviour and sportsmanlike conduct, and treat fellow competitors, event organisers, volunteers and contractors with courtesy and respect. Failure to do so may result in disqualification at any time before, during or after the Event. 7. If a competitor withdraws from the Event they must advise the finish line officials of their withdrawal as soon as possible and prior to 4:00pm, Saturday 22 nd April Challenge Melbourne reserves the right to alter rules, regulations, Event course and venues at any time provided athletes are advised prior to the Event, or if such a change is in the interest of competitor safety. 9. No headphones or headsets or any other distracting devices may be worn or carried during the race. 10. With the exception of the swim leg, Challenge Melbourne competitors must not compete with a bare torso. 11. Each competitor must be familiar with the entire course and it is their responsibility to follow the correct route. 12. Any protests must be lodged with the Race Referee within 30 mins of the athletes finishing time, or if there is a protest against timekeeping, it is within 30 mins of official times being posted (if relevant) and must be accompanied by a $100 lodgement fee. If their protest is upheld, the $100 will be refunded in full. If the protest is not upheld, the fee will be forfeited. 13. Compulsory gear includes the swim cap provided by the event organisers 14. Challenge Melbourne reserves the right to implement the contingency plan in the interests of competitor safety but will not be held liable for any loss as a result of such a decision. In the event such a decision is made, if the conditions are still deemed to be unsafe, Challenge Melbourne has sole discretion, and may cancel the Event without obligation to refund entry fees. 15. Challenge Melbourne will offer a full refund to competitors who have purchased the Weather Cancellation Refund Policy with their registration, only if the race is cancelled by event organisers due to extreme weather conditions. 16. Challenge Melbourne may test any athlete for the use of a prohibited substance at its own discretion - a positive test resulting in disqualification. 17. Prize money paid as follows; Half Distance Individual Elite Men and individual Elite Women's fields only - $20,000 total: 1st: $4,000, 2nd: $3,000, 3rd: $1,500, 4th: $1,000, 5th: $ Team categories include Men, Women and Mixed categories. 19. Age Group categories will be in 5 year intervals. Medals will be awarded to the top three in each age group so long as they are an official category. 20. Provided race numbers must be visible at all times throughout the run leg during race. 21. All athletes must register during the allocated times and attend the race briefing. All individuals and teams must rack their bicycles during the allocated times there will be no exceptions to this rule. The Event organisers reserve the right to prevent anyone not adhering to these rules from racing.

16 WITHDRAWING Any athlete who drops out of the race MUST notify the finish line officials and return your timing chip. This is absolutely essential as it is vital we know where you are on the course at all times for your own safety. The timing band is to be worn throughout the entire race and can be attached using the velcro band above the left ankle. In case of loss of the timing band during the race, time-taking is not possible anymore which leads to the participant s disqualification. The timing band is borrowed property and must be returned at the end of the race. Failure to do so will result in a $50 fine for its replacement. There is also a bike timing chip on your seat pad sticker. Official times will be listed on the Challenge Melbourne website following the completion of the event POST RACE INFORMATION RACE FINISH/RECOVERY AREA All finishers of Challenge Melbourne will receive a Finisher s medal upon crossing the finish line. Finisher s medals will be awarded to each team member. All finishers will also receive a Challenge finisher s towel. A short sports massage is available free of charge to all finishers from trained sports physiotherapists at Symmetry Physio within the Pickle Juice Recovery area. To ensure that the massage process runs as smoothly as possible there will be a staff Member to book you in for massage once you enter the recovery area. Massages are limited to 10 mins and are available to all individuals and team cyclists and runners. Post race hydration and nutrition will be in the Recovery Area with 32GI Electrolyte, as well as water, bananas, cola, lollies and fruit. We strongly recommend taking time to have something to eat and drink before your massage. PROTESTS AND APPEALS Any athlete who wishes to submit a protest or appeal must do so in person to either the race director or race referee, both of whom can be contacted through officials in the Race Venue. Protests and appeals must be made within 30 min of the protesters finish time at the end of the race and will be subject to a cost of $100. The $100 will be refunded if the protest is upheld. GEAR COLLECTION The transition area will re-open once the last competitor has left transition to commence the run leg for bike and gear bag collection. Only athletes can access the transition area for security reasons. Upon leaving the transition area with your bike, your wrist band number will be checked against your bike number, for athletes who cannot physically collect their bikes please provide support crew with your race bibs as identification to check against the bike number. No number, no bike - there will be no exceptions to this rule. PRESENTATIONS Elite Male and Female presentations will take place immediately following the first three in each category crossing the finish line. Presentation times will be approximately 11.00am and 11.15am respectively. All remaining Elite Presentations (4 th -10 th ) and Age Group Presentations (1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd ) will be made progressively on stage as results are made available. Podium medals will be presented to 1st through to 10th place for both Male and Female Elite categories, and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in all other categories.
