1 Runner Guidebook Need To Know RUN 17 IS A UNIQUE RACE FEATURING OBSTACLES, CREEK CROSSINGS AND MULTIPLE PITS. IN ORDER FOR EVERYONE TO HAVE THE MOST ENJOYABLE TIME POSSIBLE, PLEASE USE THIS BOOK AS A GUIDE TO THE RACE. AT MINIMUM, PLEASE FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES DURING THE RACE. The majority of the race will be run on uneven surfaces. Please watch your footing as you and/or your team make your pursuit toward the finish line. The race will be loads of fun, but please read the following items to ensure safety and maximum enjoyment. Please plan to arrive early. Traffic gets backed up significantly just prior to the start times. Slower runners stay to the right of the path. Faster runners pass on the left when possible. No running in groups 3-wide. Running 3-wide makes it extremely difficult for runners to pass. Each individual runner in the 3-mile event will receive a timing chip and bib number at packet pick-up. Teams will only receive one chip. For teams, chip must be worn by middle runner and number must be worn by front runner. Watch for signs. Ultimately, you are responsible for knowing the course. There will be volunteers at sections of the course. Watch for signs that mark turns, turnarounds, and mile markers. Follow mowed paths. No diving into the mud pits! They are only a few inches deep. Diving into the mud is very dangerous. Please go down the slip-n-slide feet first. Use caution at the creek crossings, as the ground may be muddy and slippery Tie shoes tightly. There are areas on the course where shoes may get stuck in the mud. It is important to have them secured tightly to avoid losing them. Runners will start in waves, with faster runners starting near the front. Still, the course is likely to get congested. Please have patience on the course. There will be medics posted along the course. If you see an injured runner along the way, report this to the next posted medic. Course maps at the back of the guidebook show medic stations. There is a Fire Jump on the 3-mile course. If you feel uncomfortable, please feel free to bypass. The fire pit is roughly 18 inches wide. Packet Pick-Up Thursday, August 24 EARLY PACKET PICK-UP 11 a.m. 5:30 p.m. Nebraska Sports Council office (4903 N 57th St, Lincoln, NE) Friday, August 25 EARLY PACKET PICK-UP 11 a.m. 5:30 p.m. Nebraska Sports Council office (4903 N 57th St, Lincoln, NE) Saturday, August 26 8 a.m. 11 a.m. Lancaster Event Center, Pavilion 1 NOTE: We encourage participants to pick up their race packets during the Thursday and Friday packet pick-up times if possible. This will alleviate congestion in the packet pick-up area on Saturday morning before the race. Runners are allowed to have their packets picked up by a friend, who will have to simply give the runner s name and sign the pick-up list.

2 Packet Pick-Up (CONTINUED) Participants that pick up their packets on Thursday or Friday DO NOT need to check-in the morning of the race. Simply arrive Saturday morning with your chip and bib number, ready to run. Don t forget to wear your wristband for a free beverage after the race! Timeline of Events SATURDAY, AUGUST 26 LANCASTER EVENT CENTER (4100 N. 84th Street, Lincoln) 8 11 a.m. Runner Check-In/Packet Pick-Up 8:50 a.m. Pre-Race Announcements 9 a.m. Mini Mud Run 10:00 a.m. 3-Mile Individuals 10:15 a.m. 3-Mile Teams 11:15 a.m. 3-Mile Awards Course Details Course maps in back of Guidebook PITS, CREEK CROSSINGS & OBSTACLES Both courses include obstacles, mud pits, and the 3-mile course includes creek crossings. These elements add to the event, but can cause congestion, so please be patient. Faster runners competing for medals should start near the front to avoid lines at the obstacles. At the main mud pit, please DO NOT go down the slip-nslide head first. The mud pit is not very deep and sliding down head first could result in serious injury. All runners should review the course maps (located at the back of this Guidebook) and be aware of obstacle and aid station locations. All obstacles are designed to be fun. If, at any time, you are not comfortable with an obstacle, there are exit locations available for you to go around the obstacle. If you choose not to participate in an obstacle, you must wait on the other side until the person who was in front of you completes it. No cheating! This rule does not apply to creek crossings. Creek crossings are mandatory for 3-Mile runners. There are no other ways around the creeks. COURSE SIGNS With plenty of signs and volunteers on the course, it will be nearly impossible to get lost. To assure that you stay on course, please keep your eyes open for the arrow signs, and follow mowed paths. It is the sole responsibility of the runner to follow course markings and signs. On-Course Etiquette Slower runners stay to the right of the path. Faster runners pass on the left whenever possible. No running in groups 3-wide. Running 3-wide makes it extremely difficult for runners to pass. Make sure your shoes are tied tight. The mud pits and creek crossings might try to take them from you. No tunes! After the creek crossings and crawling through mud pits, there won t be much left of your device if you wear it. Other personal items that you wear during the race are your responsibility also. The Nebraska Sports Council and Lancaster Event Center ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE for lost or damaged items worn by the runners. Chip Timing Chip timing will be used for the 3-mile event. Participants will tie the chip into their shoe laces to make sure it does not get ripped off in the mud pits. For tethered teams, the chip needs to be attached to the middle runner. The Mini Mud Run will not be timed, so chips ARE NOT issued or needed for mini runners.

3 Tethered Teams/Worm Race Each team will be given 16 feet of bungee cord in their packet to tie themselves together to make a chain of runners. Runner 1 tied to middle runner, middle runner tied to runner 1 and runner 3, runner 3 is tied to middle runner. Teams will be given one bib number and one timing chip. Number should be worn by runner 1. Timing chip is tied to middle runner s shoes. Bungee cord is stretchable. But, if it breaks, team has to continue running together and cross the finish line holding hands. DO NOT run 3-wide. Run in a line or a V. Make decisions together or follow the first runner s lead, especially at the creek crossings and obstacles. Mini Mud Run The Mini Mud Run will be the first event of the morning, starting at 9 a.m. This kid and adult-friendly event is approximately 1-mile finishing down the giant Slip-n-Slide and through the Mud Derby area! This fun run will not be chip timed. However, there will be a race clock at the finish line. All finishers will receive a medallion. Directions/Parking The Lancaster Event Center is located at the corner of 84th Street and Havelock Ave in Lincoln. Enter from Havelock Ave ONLY. Members of the LEC staff will be on-site directing traffic to the correct parking zones. Participants are strongly encouraged to arrive early and carpool to help eliminate parking congestion. Refer to the map to view the designated parking areas. 84th Street Havelock Ave Pavilion 1 T-Shirts & Awards Every participant will receive a Mud Run 17 t-shirt during packet pick-up. 1st, 2nd & 3rd place medals will be awarded to the following male & female groups in the individual 3-Mile; 19 & Under, 20 29, 30 39, 40 49, 50 59, 60 & Over. 1st, 2nd & 3rd place medals will be awarded to each team member of the top three teams in the following divisions: Male, Female and Mixed. All Mud Runners will receive a participation medal after crossing the finish line. Costume Contest A photo backdrop will be set up outside Pavilion 1. Participants wishing to enter the Costume Contest should get their photo taken during runner check-in. Photos will be taken from 8 a.m. 11 a.m. Judges will review the photos and select the winners during the run. Winners will be announced and will receive a special prize at the awards ceremony during the After-Party. Participants are encouraged to show up in their best tasteful costume! Restrooms Restrooms will be available inside Pavilion 1 where all the pre-race and post-race activity will take place. There will also be outdoor restrooms located in the lot east of the Start/Finish line. Bag Drop For your convenience, a bag drop, hosted by Scheels, will be available at the packet pickup area in The Runner Recovery Area. Participants are welcome to check their valuables at the Scheelstruckand pick them up after the race.

4 Shower Stations The outdoor shower assembly includes 30 individual stations. Careful, they are not private showers, keep clothes on! Participants are advised to bring a towel. Changing Area Men's and women's outdoor changing areas will be set up near the showers. Runners will not be allowed to use indoor restrooms for changing areas if they are still muddy. Participants are welcome to hang out after the race and enjoy time with good friends, family and other runners. FREE BEVERAGE: Runners who are 21 years or older must present wristband (provided in runner packet) for a beer at the After-Party. Courtesy of Lone Tree Brewing. Runners who would rather not have a beer, or those who are under 21, will receive a free non-alcoholic beverage. Runners must present wristband from the race packet to redeem their free beverage.
