1 Meet the Pirates AKINTUNDE ABISOGUN /Jumps Raleigh, N.C : Opened his freshman season by participating in six indoor events and eight outdoor events He competed in the long jump, finishing the year with a career-best fourth place finish (7.36) at the C-USA Outdoor Championships while also finishing ninth at the C-USA Indoor Championships (6.51) Qualified for NCAA East Regionals and followed with a 12th-place result (7.24) Also recorded a 7.04-meter career- best in the indoor long jump at the Gator Invitational (sixth) At the outdoor long jump event at Clemson Invitational, finished first in the preliminaries and second overall Competed in the 100-meter dash at Clemson, standing 14th with a career-best time of (11.45) Ran the outdoor 200-meter dash (24th/23.30) at the season-opening Shamrock Invite. CHRIS BELFIORE Jacksonville, N.C : Completed a solid freshman season for the Pirates cross country squad finishing in the top 30 on four occasions Highest finish of eighth (26:13.88) in XC came at the McAlister s Deli Invite (ECU) Registered best time at the UNC-Wilmington Invitational, crossing the line at 19:41.07 to finish 11th Also competed in four indoor and four outdoor track meets Highest finish of second (PR 9:50.02) came in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Clemson Invitational Was seventh at the C-USA Championships (10:23.57) Teamed with Andrew Barber, Jason Diehl and Craig Schmidt in the distance medley relay (seventh at the C-USA Championships, 10:31.56) Finished fourth (9:19.00) at the Gator Invitational but recorded his best time of the year at the C-USA Championships with a 17th-place result (9:01.90). KRIS BELL Hurdles/ Raleigh, N.C : Turned in a solid freshman year, competing in seven events Posted a fourth-place finish in first collegiate meet (36.61 in 300 meters at Virginia Tech Invitational) Also ran in the 400 meters, recording his best time at PSU Challenge Cup (29th/51.42) Raced with Andrew Barber, Chris Belfiore and Brandon Small in the 4x400 relay, finishing 5th (3:16.61) at the PSU Challenge Cup Also ran the 60-meter hurdles at the C-USA Championships, standing seventh (8.72) Threw the javelin (fourth/44.50 at the Murray Neely Invitational and 10th/42.76 at the C-USA Championships) Competed in the 110-meter hurdles at the C-USA Indoor Championships, finishing sixth (14.95) Also participated in the 110-meter hurdles at Sea Ray Relays (38th/15.77) and at the Murray Neely Invitational (11th/15.78) Walk-on as defensive back in ECU s football program. NICK BOERIO Pittsburgh, Pa : Established himself as a solid member of the Pirates program during rookie year 2006 East Carolina Men's Track & Field 11

2 Was team s top javelin thrower, setting personal record in second outdoor meet of season (46.98 meters) at the Aggie Relays to earn third-place finish Also finished third (45.71) at the Murray Neely Invitational Represented ECU in the javelin at C-USA Championship, standing ninth (45.25) Also participated in the discus at the Aggie Relays (16th/30.70) and at Clemson Invitational (8th/33.61) Participated in one track event 37th in the 800 meters at the Aggie Relays (2:13.34). High School: Earned six varsity letters (two in football, four in track) at Western Reserve Academy (Ohio) Helped track team to the IPSL championship freshman season and a second-place league finish during senior year Finished second in both shot put and discus events as a junior while finishing second in the high jump, second in the shot put, first in the discus and fifth in the triple jump during senior campaign Ranked as the leading scorer on his team both his junior and senior seasons. BRYSON BOWLING Johnson City, Tenn : Joined track team upon completion of four-year career as a wide receiver for the Pirates football team Was squad s second-leading performer in the 400 meters, running event in six meets Posted top time of during prelim heat at the C-USA Outdoor Championships (El Paso) Advanced to finals where he recorded a fifth-place finish (47.82) Other effort of note was a third-place finish at the Clemson Invitational (48.12) Also was a member of two 4x100 relay units (sixth at Diet Pepsi Classic/41.77 and fourth at Clemson Invite/42.25) Teamed with Mabry, Newby and Small in the 4x400 relay and finished seventh at the C-USA Championships (3:23.59) medley relay squad (with Collins, Dennish and Yunaska) were 19th at the Penn Relays (10:02.07). DERRICK CARR Jumps Concord, N.C : Competed in the triple jump Finished seventh (13.20) at the Shamrock Invitational in first outdoor meet Booked personal-best with leap of (ninth) at the C-USA Championships Also competed during indoor season (11th/13.07 at the Liberty on Track, 10th/13.31 at the Carolina Invitational. High School: Lettered in basketball, football and track his senior year at Mt. Pleasant HS Named team MVP and defensive player-of-theyear on the hardcourt Earned all-conference and all-county honors in track while setting school records in the long jump, triple jump and the 4x100 event. Personal: Intended major is business management Son of Derrick Carr and Tina Miller. MELVIN CHESTNUT Jumps Forest City, N.C : Opened freshmen season competing in two outdoor events (long jump, high jump) Posted career-best high jump at Murray Neely Invitational finishing (2nd/1.90) Also began season in long jump with a PR (6.74) to finish fourth at the Shamrock Invitational Stood third in the long jump (6.59) at the Clemson Invitational Ended campaign at the C- USA Championship (13th/6.59) Also competed in indoor long jump and high jump Was ninth and 10th at the C-USA Championships (1.84/high jump, 6.47/long jump). High School: Lettered three years on both the track and football teams at Chase HS A 2004 North Carolina Class 2-A high jump champion Broke high jump records at the county, conference and regional level Earned all-conference honors as a cornerback on the football team. Personal: Intended major is biology Son of Melvin and Ann Chestnut Born in San Diego, Calif. WILL COLLINS Middle LaGrange, N.C : After establishing himself as a solid member of the Pirates cross country team with four top 30 finishes during the fall, he also competed in three indoor track events (mile, 3,000-meter run and distance medley relay) His career best in the mile run came at the PSU Challenge Cup (9th/4:17.51) Stood second at both the Virginia Tech Invitational (4:21.17) and Liberty on Track (4:25.77) while finishing seventh at the C-USA Championships (4:20.90) Ran the 3,000 meters at Virginia Tech, finishing sixth (8:57.21) before standing 16th at the C-USA Championships (9:01.02) Also competed in two outdoor track events (1,500 and 3,000). Career-best time in the 1,500 meters came at the Diet Pepsi Classic (fourth/3:58.26) Was 10th (4:21.06) at the C- USA Championships in the 1,500 Won 3,000- meter title (8:51.54) at the Aggie Relays Had career-best time of 8:43.85 in the 3,000 at the Shamrock Invitational. MATT DENNISH Red Lion, Pa : Competed in two events for the Pirates as a sophomore Ran the 1,500 meters, finishing first (3:58.56) at the Murray Neely Invitational Also competed at the C-USA Championships and stood sixth (3:56.10) Teamed with Aaron Mabry, Jarrett Newby and Kyle Yunaska in the 4x800 relay to record a second-place standing (7:44.57) at the Aggie Relays : Turned in stellar rookie season as one of East Carolina s top distance performers Ran once in the 1,000- meter event (2:31.76 at the Virginia Tech Invitational/6th) and six times in the mile Posted a new ECU program record of 4:08.09 during the prelims of the IC4A Championships (Boston, Mass.) before following with an eighth-place finish in the finals (4:10.86) Came in fifth during the C-USA Indoor Championships (4:15.97) Keyed ECU s distance medley quartet to a fifth-place standing at the C-USA Indoor Championships (10:09.70) after a fourth-place effort at the Clemson Invitational earlier in the season (10:19.48) Earned All-Conference USA honors for performance in the 1,500-meter run during the outdoor championships (3rd/personal-record 3:52.54) Also was a participant in the outdoor version of the Pirates distance medley relay unit (Kristian Jorgenson, Kyle MacKenzie and Domonick Richmond) which established a new ECU record with a time of 9:55.86 at the Sea Ray Relays (3rd) April 17. JASON DIEHL Lititz, Pa : Finished his sophomore campaign with participation in two outdoor events (4x400 relay, 800-meter run) Set his career-best time in the 800-meter run with a third-place finish (1:56.17) at the Murray Neely Invitational Also raced with Aaron Mabry, Jarrett Newby and Kyle Yunaska in the 4x400, finishing fourth (3:21.62) at the Shamrock Invitational Also ran a personalbest time in the 800 meters at the PSU Challenge Cup, finishing 23rd (1:57.14) Teamed with Chris Belfiore, Andrew Barber and Craig Schmidt in the distance medley relay at the C-USA Championships (seventh/10:31.56) : Opened collegiate career with participation in the 800- meter run during the indoor season Ran in the event twice, recording a career-best effort of 1:58.84 (Virginia Tech Challenge/43rd) Also turned in a 2:01.63 mark at the UNC Invitational (21st) Competed in the same event during the Pirates outdoor campaign and notched a personalbest performance of 1:58.69 at the Neely Relays (5th). JAMES DILLARD Apex, N.C : Opened freshmen year by competing in three outdoor events (400, 4x100 and 4x400 relays) Set a career-best in the 400 at the Shamrock Invitational by finishing 10th (50.59) Teamed with Akintunde Abisogun, Melvin Chestnut and David Rucker in the 4x100, finishing third (42.11) at the seasonopening Shamrock meet Joined Andrew Barber, Brandon Small and Kevin Thompson in the 4x400 at the same meet (first/3:16.48) Ran the indoor 400, setting a PR at the PSU Challenge Cup (26th/50.52) Raced with Barber, Small and Hector Cotto in the 4x400, finishing fifth (3:22.74) at the Liberty on Track and seventh (3:25.47) at the C-USA Championships. AURLBRIO FENNELL Middle Charlotte, N.C : Fennell participated in one cross country event during the season, finishing 43rd (33:31.29) at the McAlister s Deli Invitational Completed the 6K UNC-Wilmington Invitational course in a time (20:41.51) Also participated in the 800 meters for indoor track, standing 18th at both the Liberty on Track (2:05.45) and Carolina Invitational (2:04.93). JOE FLEMING Concord, N.C : First-year member of the ECU track program who participated in two outdoor meets throwing the javelin Turned in his best toss of the year at the Clemson Invitational with an effort of meters (12th in prelim competition) Followed up with a performance of during a sixth-place finish at the Murray Neely Invitational in Greensboro, N.C. ERIC FRASURE Charlotte, N.C : Enjoyed an amazing junior season in which he set five indoor and outdoor records and earned All-America status (seventh-place NCAA Championships in the weight throw) Established indoor records in the shot put (16.85 meters at the C-USA Championships) and weight throw (21.62 at the UNC Last Chance) while setting new outdoor marks in the shot put (16.60 at the C-USA Championships), discus (55.59 at the C-USA Championships) and hammer throw (64.34 at the C-USA Championships) Finished first in the weight throw (20.73) and second in the shot at the C-USA Indoor Championships Earned A-A honors after recording a weight throw of at the NCAA Championships Advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the hammer throw after a ninth-place finish at the East Regional (60.35) : Enjoyed record-setting sophomore campaign, shattering an indoor (35-pound weight throw) and two outdoor records (discus, hammer) Earned NCAA provisional qualification on three occasions in the weight throw, surpassing the meter mark Set new school record with a toss of meters while capturing the title and picking up all-conference accolades at the C-USA Indoor Championships and picking up all-conference accolades Also won the event at the IC4A Championships with a throw of meters Surpassed the school s outdoor record in the discus with a toss of meters (Duke Invitational/4th) and finished sixth at the C-USA Championships with a throw of Advanced to the NCAA East Regional 2006 East Carolina Men's Track & Field 13

High School: Named top athlete as a junior and athlete-ofthe-year senior season at St. Benedict College. Personal: Intended major is communications Son of Trevor and Margaret Born in San Diego, Calif. ANDREW JENKINS Statesville, N.C : Ran the 5,000 meters as a freshman Set his career-best (indoor) after finishing fourth (15:56.96) at Liberty on Track Also competed at the Carolina Invitational finishing (sixth/16:01.49) Turned in best outdoor time of 16:08.19 at the Aggie Relays. High School: Participated in track for two years at West Iredell HS (missed junior season due to a stress fracture) Named team MVP and winner of the Bronze Shoes Award following his senior campaign Also lettered in swimming. Personal: Academic major is criminal justice with a minor in forensics Son of Michael Jenkins and Patricia Applegate A North Carolina scholar-athlete. 5 JOHN LOEHR Holtsville, N.Y : One of two athletes who competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase event during the outdoor season Ran in two events during the spring Posted a seventh-place finish at the Clemson Invitational in first meet (10:44.76) Improved time with second showing, a secondplace showing at the Murray Neely Invitational (10:16.30) Logged to compete at the C-USA Outdoor Championships but did not finish race. AARON MABRY Middle Waynesville, N.C : Participated in three outdoor events (800, 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams) Had a career-best effort in the 800, finishing 10th (1:55.63) at the Diet Pepsi Classic in Gainesville, Fla. Teamed with Jarrett Newby, Jason Diehl and Kyle Yunaska in the 4x400 and earned a fourth-place standing (3:21.62) at the Shamrock Invitational Also raced in the 4x800 (Newby, Yunaska and Matt Dennish) and stood second (7:44.57) at the Aggie Relays Ran the indoor 800 at Virginia Tech Invitational and booked a fifth-place finish (1:58.96).
