Elevatin Shwcase: nd Ave, Dwntwn Fernie WAIVERS Yu may pick up n behalf f ther racers, hwever all racers need t sign a waiver and hand it in, befre racing. These will be available fr dwnlad in advance f the race. Cpies will als be available at Package Pick Up. If yu are unable t make these times, there will be a chance fr pick up the mrning f the race. Hwever, this is nly fr thse unable t get int twn befre 7PM. If yu are unable t make Friday, yu may pick up Saturday July 28: 5AM, Start line. All Waivers need t be drpped ff by 5.30AM. DROP BAGS Drp bags als need t be drpped ff in the respective TA1 and TA2 drp ff lcatins, by 5.30AM mre drp bag details in the RACE DETAILS sectin belw. DIRECTIONS TO ANNEX PARK START/FINISH The Annex Park is the lcatin fr the Start & Finish f the race. The park is adjacent t the Elk River, and acrss the highway frm Dwntwn Fernie. The entrance t the park is ff 11 th street and 12 th ave. There is a gd amunt f parking nce yu enter the park, alternatively, yu can park dwn 12 th ave. Please fllw signage frm the park entrance t Parking and the Start/Finish Line. RACE START & FINISH Start: Bth the 50km and Relay starts at 6AM. Curse Clses: At 7PM, a 13hr cut ff. This seems like a generus cut ff time, as we want everyne t finish. Hwever, with technical trails and lts f vertical, we expect sme racers t be chasing this time! In 2017 we had a few racers predicting 6hrs, yet came in arund 9hrs. A few were chasing cut ffs all day, and sme were pushed t finish. Please see individual TA cut ff belw. POST-RACE DINNER & AWARDS Dinner: Everyne lves a gd pst-race meal and finish line atmsphere. As such, the delicius pst-race meal catered by Gd Grub Catering will be served frm 5-8pm at the Finish Line, ensuring a great atmsphere fr ur final racers. Expect pulled prk n a bun, cleslaw, Newfie baked beans, green salad and pasta salad. Awards: Awards will take place at 7PM, midst dinner. We will have awards fr 1 st 3 rd Sl Male and Female, Male Team, Female Team and Mixed Team. We will als have lts f Draw Prizes up fr grabs. These will be drawn straight after the Awards. With grgeus views, dn t frget t lk up at times, althugh remember t watch yur fting! The curse is brken int three Legs, with tw Transitin Areas (TA 1 & 2), lcated at the end f Leg 1 and 2. Racers will be able t utilize TA2 fr a secnd time, as they finish Leg 3a, befre heading up the final climb f the day, n Leg 3b. Each TA will have a fully stcked Aid Statin and Slists will have the ptin t have drp bags at bth. Sweet views and expsed trails, at the tp f Mt. Fernie! LEG 1 Annex Park t Old Grwth Trail Head Leg 1 is the lngest and has the mst vertical, ging frm the Annex Park, up and ver Mt. Fernie, dwn t Island Lake Ldge, cntinuing dwn t the bttm f the Old Grwth Trail. It s the mst rugged Leg with expsed rcky sectins at the tp f Mt Fernie., alng with the chance t explre Fernie s backcuntry, with amazing vistas t twn and as yu drp dwn int Island Lake Ldge. Rute: Annex Park Fernie Muntain Trail Heik s Rcky Rad - Windy Pass Heik s Muntain Lakes Trail - Tamarack Trail Island Lake Ldge Old Grwth Trail. This TA is lcated just ff the Island Lake Ldge rad. There is a parking lt, hwever, due t space, we ask n spectatrs r sl supprt teams cme t this TA, nly relay team members are allwed at this statin. (unless f curse yu travel n ft r bicycle.) Racers will be crssing the Island Lake Ldge rad here, s we ask drivers t be cautius and fllw ur marshal s directins. Slists: TA 1 drp bags will be delivered here n supprt allwed here, due t space Teams: Leg 1 runners finish, Leg 2 runners start. Please nly ne vehicle per team/crew t this lcatin. Head dwn the Rail Trail dwn, then up the infamus P9 climb, n up Kill Phil and acrss Stupid Trail. Frm there expect amazing flwy, berm-filled single track dwn t the Elk Valley Nrdic Centre. Rute: Rail Trail Lazy Lizard - P9 Kill Phil Stupid Traverse S*Bmb Brkeback Lazy Lizard extensin Elk Valley Nrdic Centre Distance 16.5km Vertical Climb: 720m TA 2 Elk Valley Nrdic Centre Lcated at the Elk Valley Nrdic Centre. This TA is pen t all, hwever yu can t park in the Prvincial Park, s please park n the side f the rad befre the Park sign! Again, racers will be crssing the Prvincial Park rad mving frm Leg 2 t 3, and als back again frm Leg 3a/3b, s please drive with cautin. Slists: TA 2 drp bags will be delivered here. Supprt team allwed! Teams: Leg 2 runners finish, Leg 3 runners start. Again, we ask fr ne vehicle per team/crew t this lcatin. 10 2018 Elk Valley Ultra Racer Handbk Versin 01/25 LEG 3 Elk Valley Nrdic Centre (EVNC) t Annex Park Leg 3 is the glry leg, and is the shrtest leg f the day, with the least amunt f elevatin. Hwever, due t the time f day that many racers will hit this Leg, and bearing in mind what s cme befre, it s deceptively challenging, and nce ut f the shade f the Prvincial park trails, is a lengthy and ht final climb f the day! New this year, this Leg is split int 3a and 3b, and will be signed as such. Hwever, Leg 3a/b is treated as ne Leg, and must be run by ne team member. 3a starts by giving yu a taste f the grgeus Fernie Prvincial Park Trails. 3a ends back at TA2, where racers can then access the Aid Statin if required. 3b, takes racers ut f the campgrund and back up the final climb f the day. Once at the tp yu re all dwnhill frm here. The final few kms fllw the Elk River alng the Annex Park trail, back t the Annex Park. 3a Rute: EVNC Bridge View Cnnectr Wdy Happy Gilmar Old Gat Grby Prvincial Park Cnnectr Campsite Rad EVNC (hit aid statin) 3a Distance: 6km 3a Vertical Climb: 175m 3b Rute: EVNC Stve Mushrm Head Red Snja Burma Rad (t cnnecting trail by helipad) Annex Park 3b Distance: 7.75km 3b Vertical Climb: 425m Leg 3 Ttal Distance: 13.75km Leg 3 Ttal Vertical Climb: 600m LEG STATS Leg 1: 20.5km // 1,480m Leg 2: 16.5km // 720m Leg 3a: 6km // 175m. The Start/Finish, bth TA s and at the base f the Rail Trail near the start f Leg 2 will have washrm(s). TA 1: End f Leg 1. Bttm f Old Grwth, 20.5km TA 2: End f Leg 2. Elk Valley Nrdic Centre, 37km End f Leg 3a: 6km int Leg 3, yu pass back thrugh TA2 at the Elk Valley Nrdic Centre, 43km Finish Line: ~51km The fllwing will be available at ur Aid Statins Fruit: Watermeln, Oranges and Bananas Chips: Plain, Salt and Vinegar Sweet Treats: Gummies and Twizzlers Gels: Variety f Gels New 2018! Biled & Salted Ptates at TA2 nly Water Gatrade New 2018! Cke Ice Cups we will have cups at n-curse Aid Statins as we knw yu ll be wanting t grab and gulp, hwever in the effrt t be as cup-free as we can, we will NOT have cups at the finish line! **PLEASE NOTE!**: We cannt emphasize enugh ur recmmendatin t carry 2+ litres f water + electrlytes n all 3 Legs. This is a very challenging race, with big, expsed climbs! It will mre than likely be HOT. Yu will drain yur water faster than yu expected. And even thugh the Legs get shrter, they dn t get much easier r faster. FINISH LINE Our Finish Line Aid Statin will be stcked with the abve, hwever, as yur pst-race dinner isn t served until 5-8PM, yu may want t have yur supprt team at the Finish with smething substantial! Gd Grub Catering will have their Fd Truck there t, with fd available t purchase, t tide yu ver! Fernie Physitherapy will als be ffering massages! And, being a stne s thrw frm the Elk River, take advantage f this and g sak thse legs! The Finish Line had a great atmsphere last year, s it s great t stick arund and cheer! With a beer We will als have a water hk-up at the Finish Line, s there s endless water t drink. CHECKING IN AT TA s Slists and teams are required t check in when arriving at TA1 and TA2, t ensure yur time is recrded. There will be tw metal gates with bunting n them, which racers need t pass thrugh and stp at the timing team, lcated under the timing tent. Please ensure yur number is visible at all times, and pinned t yur frnt. We ask spectatrs t stay clear f the timing tent, t ensure n ne is missed and the timing team has clear visibility f racers appraching. Please nte: Slists and Leg 3 runners, DO NOT pass back thrugh the timing area at the end f Leg 3a. Marshals will d their best t help alert teams, hwever never underestimate yur teammates ability t drp the hammer and blw their expected time ut the water! Dn t leave them waiting fr yu!! If unsure, carry yur phne there is gd cell receptin ~5km ut frm TA1 and TA2. DROP BAGS Slists can have drp bags at TA1 and TA2. Please ensure they are well marked with yur NAME, RACE # and either TA1 r TA2. Please ensure yur Drp Bags are drpped ff by 5.30AM at the start line, t the respective vehicle. And make sure yu drp the right bag, int the right vehicle! Drp bags will be returned t the start line after each TA has clsed. Yu will als be able t leave bags in the Start/Finish Area, hwever this will nt be secured, s we advise n valuables. The Gat knws. Fllw the pink flagging! COURSE MARKINGS The curse will be well marked with the fllwing, hwever please ensure yu stay aware and be respnsible fr yur wn decisins, dn t fllw feet! Pink Flagging Tape and Pink Flags Arrws Right, Left and Straight, Wrng Way Signs, Cautin Signs and Rad Crssing Signs Metal Gates and Pennant Flags at TA1 and TA2 indicating the Timing Team New 2018! Leg 3 is split int 3a/3b, and will be marked as such. Alng with better flw at TA2! Thanks t everyne wh gave feedback n last year s race. Overall cmments were that ur flagging was great, hwever we culd d with a few mre reassurance flags in places. As such, this year, expect a few mre flags and tape ut there t keep yu all n curse! 13 2018 Elk Valley Ultra Racer Handbk Versin 01/25 RACE CUTOFF TIMES As well as an verall 13hr cutff time, we have cutffs at each TA, t keep racers n track fr a successful and safe race. TA1: 12PM, 6hr cutff. Leg 1 is the tughest mst technical leg, s we have given extra time t this leg. TA2: 4PM, 10hr cutff. Leg 2 is still challenging and if yu re chasing the TA1 cutff, expect t be cutting TA2 very clse. FINISH: 7PM, 13hr cutff. Leg 3 is generally fast and flwy, s 3hrs shuld give yu plenty f time t bring it hme! Please nte: These are nt set in stne hwever decisins will be made based n individual cases and factrs. Our medical team will als play a key rle in the decisin-making prcess. Unsure hw yu ll fair? Check ut last year s Leg times, here: FIRST AID First Aid and medical services are lcated at TA1, TA2 and the Start/Finish Area. If at any pint the medical team feels yu are unable t cntinue, yu will be pulled frm the race. We understand yu might have high mments and what the? mments thrughut yur race, hwever yur safety is ur #1 pririty and ur Medical Team and RD s wrd is final. Please respect this! S please remember the fllwing, whether yu re a Racer r Supprt Crew: N earbuds! Srry, but with the backcuntry elements f this race, as well as utilizing sme busy bike trails and a few rad crssings, n music is allwed. Please respect this! N littering, anywhere! N tuching r tampering with signage Help fellw runners. If yu see smene struggling, please stp and help them. If yu sacrifice yur race in the prcess, we ll give yu a free entry fr anther year. Please lk after each ther. If yu see smene ging ff curse, shut and get them back n curse. We dn t want anyne getting lst! N cutting crners, stay n the flagged trail and fllw signage. Please be curteus t fellw runners, rganizers and vlunteers at all times! We are all here t help yu have a fantastic race day and experience! And have fun! RECOMMENDED GEAR Whilst there is n cmpulsry gear, we recmmend the fllwing, whether a Slist r n a Team: Slists and Team Runners: Carry a minimum f 2L f water n all 3 Legs. We can t emphasize this enugh especially based ff last year s race and racer feedback and we hpe yu decide t adhere t this VERY STRONG RECOMMENDATION! Dn t believe us? Check ut last year s breakdwn f Leg times, here: There is NO OTHER drinking water/aid n curse ther than ur TA s. Fuel, electrlytes, space blanket and a lightweight jacket. Carry bear spray fr the entire race. Leg 1 is particularly expsed and is in the backcuntry, bear spray heavily advised. And make sme nise if yu find yurself running alne.
