Shootout is scheduled for Saturday October 1at the Buffalo Ranch course. The open and collegiate divisions have been combined with the women s 5.8k race going off at 9:00 AM and the men s 5k at 9:45 AM. For detailed information on the course, entry information and how to find Buffalo Ranch go to CUBuffs.com. The meet is scored separately for the Division I schools and Division II schools but that doesn t stop fans from calculating how well CU does in this early season meet against the perennial powerhouses in D-II, Western State and Adams State. Other schools in attendance in past years include The Air Force Academy, Wyoming, University of Northern Colorado, Metro State, Colorado School of Mines, Regis and Colorado College. The men s team comes into their first real test of the season ranked 7 th nationally while the women are ranked 4th nationally making them the highest ranked PAC 12 Team. They have several young and talented athletes in their ranks and it will be interesting to see who will follow in the steps of Jenny Barringer. CU s steeplechasers continue to lead the way as Emma Coburn, winning NCAA Championships during her spring track campaign as well as the USATF National Championship and went on to the finals of the World Championships. The other steepler is Shalaya Kipp who broke the ten minute barrier and took third at the NCAA Championships and is rapidly beginning her ascension to the next level. The men s team feature a strong core of upper classmen in Richard Medina, Andy Wacker and Joe Bosshard. Ammar Moussa a highly touted freshman from Arcadia should be interesting to watch. If the Buffs can put all the pieces together at the right time and keep everyone healthy until regionals and nationals they should acquit themselves very nicely this season. 4 We are still on the web at S U N D A Y G R O U P R U N S 9 A M L O O K I N G F O R A G R O U P T O T R A I N W I T H? Looking for a low key group to train with throughout the year? I lead and coach a group that meets Tuesdays/Thursday at Flatiron Athletic Club at 7:00 AM. FAC does offer BRR members a nice discounted rate to join as well. They have great facilities and the trails are only 3 kilometers away from the CU track or the South Boulder Creek Trail. You do not have to be a member of the Flatiron Athletic Club to join us. On Saturdays there is a scheduled long run (approximately 90 minutes) from a variety of locations around Boulder s incredible trail system. Contact me if you have questions or want more information. You can call me at home at or Richard.Castro@colorado.edu. A typical training session consists of a 20 minute + easy warm up, followed by several repetitions of anywhere from 1 to 8 minutes of running at or near your 5k date pace and to be done within a 30 minute window and that includes your recovery time. We then do a 15 minute cool down and head back to our starting point at FAC. Running any hard training session is difficult enough and doing it alone during the winter months can quickly become discouraging. So check us out sometime and see if we fit your needs.

The Sunday group runs continue to meet at the First National Bank of Colorado (3033 Iris Ave, rear parking lot) and we have PowerBar recovery drinks, muffins, cookies and cinnamon rolls from the Great Harvest Bread Co. If you would like to help out the BRR and take a turn picking up our bakery goods or bringing the water coolers get in touch with me, Rich Castro, at one of our functions. Please invite fellow runners to join us for a go as you please social run any Sunday. The run travels east to the Cottonwood Trails and allows runners to choose their own routes, by doing an out and back after reaching Jay Road or the Diagonal Highway or going through Waterstone Subdivision and taking 51st Street back toward Boulder. I would love to have more runners join us, so let s encourage runners of all abilities to join us for one of our runs or

The statement below has appeared in the last 3 newsletters and has generated some interesting responses. No I am not going to stop running but I will no longer be in charge of organizing all of the club activities listed below. Hopefully I will actually find time to train more and travel. I hope to do things I ve never done before. I started with the World Masters T&F Championships in Sacramento. In February I will travel to Hawaii and do the Great Aloha Run and beyond that I haven t made too many plans. In December I will host my Final First Monday Social on the 7th then travel to Seattle for the USATF National Club XC Championships on the 10th. Our men s team has found great success on the national level, winning the team title in 2008 & 2010 and taking the bronze in The Club XC Meet has rapidly become one of the most competitive events on the calendar. If you want more information give me a call at Boulder has a wealth of running talent, wish we could bring it all together at the national level so Boulder teams could duplicate the type of success the 60+ age group teams have enjoyed. Happy running, it s been great. Open statement to Boulder Road Runner Members & Friends 2011 will be the last year of my leadership of the BRR. Having founded the club 32 years ago is one of my proudest achievements. There are several areas that need to be closely examined by those that elect to take up the mantle of President and organizer of the BRR. We have evolved through many phases over our three decades. At one time we were all things to all people in the Boulder running community. As time passed we have slowly become a niche organization. Taking on projects that needed to be addressed and no other organization was capable or willing to undertake. A prime example is the Summer Track Series. It is the only track series within about 100 miles and provides members the opportunity to compete on the track at a variety of distances. We still sponsor a weekly group run on Sundays, which initially was our starting point for our club. We continue to staff several major road races with our volunteers and are the back bone of one of America s greatest races, the Bolder Boulder. If we are to continue and thrive for another 3 decades we need to adapt, evolve and rethink our approach to running, the recruitment of new members and what activities we will continue to support. Here are the areas I feel need to be inspected and here they are in no special order. I am sure I have omitted something from this list so please feel free to contact me and add your comments or critical thinking to this list. 1. Mission Statement. Support the Sport. 10 A Brief Chat With Jenny Simpson September 9, :02 am Reported By Peter Gambaccini Jenny Simpson won the 1500-meter run at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu in 4:05.40, becoming the first American woman to win the event at the Championships since Mary Decker Slaney in Simpson, the former Jenny Barringer, was second (behind Morgan Uceny) in the 1500 at the 2011 USATF Championships. Her 4:28.60 mile indoors in New York in January is the fastest time of the year by an American, she won the 3000 and the mile at the USATF Indoor Championships in March, and her season also included a 15:11.49 for 5000 meters at Mt. SAC on April 15. Simpson, attended high school in Florida (she was a Foot Locker Regional Cross Country champ twice) and was a collegian at the University of Colorado. She holds the American record of 9:12.50 for the 3000-meter steeplechase and the collegiate record of 3:59.90 for 1500 meters; she has run 15:01.70 indoors for 5000 meters. Simpson was a three-time NCAA champion in the steeplechase (and an NCAA Indoor champ in the "flat" 3000) and won USA titles in the steeplechase in 2007 and She was ninth in the steeplechase at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and fifth at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. Simpson now trains at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs with Coach Juli Benson (formerly Henner). Simpson spoke with reporters by teleconference from Italy, where she is running a 1500 in Rieti on Saturday. She is also doing a 1500 at the Memorial Van Damme meet in Brussels on September 16. "When people talk about being a part of something that's greater than themselves, I feel like this (her World Championship) is a perfect example. What I achieved weekend has been really exciting and kind of shocking for me and a lot of my team," she said in an opening statement, "but it's also been a really humbling experience for me because the joy I have in what I do often comes from being able to share that and knowing that so many other people are enjoying what I do. And so just the huge influx of congratulations and support from so many people that have been a part of my life and a part of my career, that's been the greatest joy of this accomplishment." What was the last thing your coach said to you before the (World Championships final) race? Jenny Simpson: That last thing my coach probably said to me was "stay out of trouble." The 1500 meters is probably the most prone to have pile-ups and have falls. We're aware of how good everyone is, and that means how close everyone is going to be throughout the race. And it proved to be that way in our final. So that's probably the last thing she told me. Going out and having fun, I don't have to be reminded of that. I love what I do. Tell us how physical that race was. It looked like it was pretty close for most of the race. JS: Almost everyone in that field is capable of running what ended up being the winning time. And so what that means is that everybody's within striking distance with 400 meters to go. So it definitely was physical because the group was so tightly packed. Another thing that adds to some of the physicalness of the race is what's unique to the World Championships, is that we run three rounds. That adds another element to the race that we wouldn't experience just going out and running hard in one event. This is the third race in five days, so a lot of people are tired. People are excited about getting to the final. There's a lot at stake. So it was definitely a tactical and aggressive race, but that's always to be expected in a World Championships. Do you think this was an example of the final falling at exactly the right time in your return to sharpness? JS: Yeah, I'm a strong believer that things happen for a reason, and so my season got delayed, and as a result of that, I think maybe that worked in my favor, that the World Championships fell right when I was coming to the best weeks of my training. I come from a distance background, and so having a lot of strength helped when you do have to take a little bit of time off like I did earlier in the season when I got sick. It kind of helps you hold on to some of your fitness. And going to the three rounds, I think I was just really strong, and like you said, the sharpness came at just the right time of the year for me. Did you feel like a 4:05 race might be best for your medal chances considering the kick that you have? Would something like a 4:02 race, everyone running at that level, possibly not have been as much to your advantage? JS: I really felt like I was prepared for any way that the race went out. I have proven myself to be really fast in the 1500 in the past. I wasn't able to showcase that yet this year, but I know that I physically have the ability to run out front during a really fast race. But the World Championships, by the nature of the rounds, seldom produces a whole pack of people that run those really fast times. I anticipated because of the way that the Diamond Leagues have been won throughout the season that there was going to be a group of people there at the end. It really did play out that way but I was prepared to keep contact with the pack whether it went out slow or it went out at 64 pace (per 400 meters) the whole way. Talk about how you developed as a miler and what you've done under Juli (Benson, her coach) to further what started at CU (the University of Colorado). JS: My current coach is Juli Benson. She was the person who I really believe saw the greatest potential for me in the 1500 meters. And I moved to her as a coach because has a lot of experience in the 1500 meters as an athlete. She was part of the Olympic team in 1996, and also because she has a lot of experience coaching middle distances. Coming from a distance background, I know what it's like to go out and run a lot of miles but she really highly specialized in that middle distance discipline and what it takes to take somebody with a lot of strength and infuse those really important tactical skills and the type of speed you need to be able to close. So I've been doing a lot of workouts that I'm unaccustomed to. I think it took my body six to eight months to even make that transition. But the stimulus is obviously really successful and an important thing for me to go through. Eighteen months later, due to that tutelage, I feel like I'm very much a similar athlete to what I was coming up through my college years but definitely much more sharp and much more tactically and mentally prepared for specifically the 1500-meter race.

I feel like I'm very much a similar athlete to what I was coming up through my college years but definitely much more sharp and much more tactically and mentally prepared for specifically the 1500-meter race. Obviously you are a great steeplechaser. Do you have any thought of going back to that? JS: I really enjoy the steeple and I had a lot of momentum going into the 2009 season when I was able to produce that really great PR in the (Worlds) final. It's an event that I think is a large part of the character of my racing style now. It's very dynamic and it's the type of race where a lot of times you have to take control because people don't run in packs as much as they do in the 1500 or in the 5k. And so returning to it would be a really exciting and fun thing for me. But it's important for me in my career to do what's best for my body and what's best for making teams and earning medals. And so that's really a discussion I'm going to have to have for my coach, especially as we entertain what we're going to do for 2012, which is a really important year obviously. So I'll sit down with my coach and we'll make that decision in the fall. But one thing that will be different in the coming year from past years is that I'll probably make that decision earlier and then highly specialize in what I choose to race, whether it be the steeple or the 1500 meters, and then do less dabbling in the other distances. Both you and Matthew Centrowitz (the American who won World championships bronze in the men's 1500) were in your first major international championships meets in that event, and yet both of you ran remarkably calmly and coolly and stayed out of trouble. There's all this talk about resurgence in American distance running, and the ability to run in championship races rather than just run fast at an invitational is a big part of that. Is this totally individual or can you sense that there's a generation of people (Americans) who are just more comfortable in that situation? JS: I think at every level in U.S. running, the middle distances are getting more competitive, and that's really helping people like Matt and I understand what task is ahead of us when we get to World Championships. The personal bests and the records at the NCAA level are faster than they've been. They're taken huge leaps in the last five years, and at the U.S. level, making the team is more difficult now in the middle distances than it's been in a long time. And so I think that just raising the bar at every level is just something that's helped Matt and I. I think Matt's an incredibly calm and talented young man and I just think he has an incredibly bright future. Crossing that finish line (in Daegu), you became a hero in the eyes of young girls. Who did you look up to growing up, and did you call on any of this inspiration during your race or in your training leading up to it? JS: I've been really close to my Dad my whole life. He's been somebody who's really been inspiring to me and somebody that I feel like I've always been able to look up to. Whenever there was a challenge ahead of him or something difficult, my dad isn't somebody standing up on a podium in front of thousands of people, but he always conducts himself with an enormous amount of dignity and that's something I've respected in him ever since I was a child. So having that example in my life, knowing what dignity and what grace looks like, has been a wonderful thing for me as a human being and throughout my career. But actually in the race, I did not have a really great relationship with my younger sister growing up. We were just typical young girls that are a similar age and we had a very normal sibling rivalry. But she and I have become much, much closer as we've gotten older. Specifically in the race, who was I thinking of? It would definitely be my younger sister. She's serving in the U.S. Army right now and she is just an incredible example to me of how if you're willing to work hard and you have a dream, even if you're not doing it in front of thousands of people as I have the privilege of doing, you can lead a really productive and wonderful and happy life. And I'm really proud of her for demonstrating that for me. When you graduated from high school in Florida, what did you think would be reasonable for you to expect to accomplish as a runner? JS: When I left Florida to go to Colorado, I was definitely naive about what the collegiate running scene was like. At Colorado, I wanted to work my way up to being the best person on that team. I think every time I've been introduced to a new team situation, that's been my goal to really be a leader on the team, be the best person on the team, and really take in the best practices of all the people around me. I think that's been a great way for me personally to attack everything that I've gone after. all the way on up until you find yourself at the top of a podium at a World Championships and you kind of wonder "man, where did the time go and how did I get here?" Regarding the Olympics, how does your victory (in Daegu) change your expectations? JS: I feel like what this World Championships changes for me is that winning a medal is no longer just kind of this figurative thing out there that I'm hoping maybe someday to accomplish. You know, I have a medal sitting in my hotel room, and that just seems so unreal to me. What it changes is that going into London, I have so much more faith and so much more belief that it's possible and that whatever race I do run, I belong in the demeanor of training with a purpose to medal. Editor s Note: Jenny Barringer Simpson finished off her season with a win on the track at 1500m in Morocco (4:15+.) and besting an interesting field at the New York Road Runners Fifth Ave. Mile in 4:22.3. I call it interesting because that field included Hannah England the World Champs Silver Medalist, Sally Kipyego the Silver Medalist in the 10,000 meters and Jenny s arch rival during her collegiate years when she was running for Colorado and Sally for Texas Tech. Lastly it included Morgan Uceny the Diamond League 1500m champion and holder of the fastest 1500m of the year. Clearly she ended up the year on a positive year. To see Jenny in action check out page 12.

Interview with Emma Coburn by RunCOLO During her high school career at Crested Butte, Emma Coburn set schools records in every event from the 400m to the 3200m, before taking her talents to the University of Colorado. In June, Emma won her first NCAA 3000m steeplechase title at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She then went on to win the USATF steeplechase title, giving her a spot to race on the World Championship team.emma has spent her summer racing in Europe and ran a 4:12.97 (1500m) in Belgium on July 31st, recording the fourth-fastest time ever on the CU all-time performers chart. On August 6th, she set a new PR in the steeple, running 9:37.16 in London. Emma has had one hell of a summer and she plans to cap things off by racing in the 3000m steeplechase at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea at the end of August. How has your summer been? My summer has been going really well so far. My collegiate season ended on a high note with the NCAA meet. My goal coming into the season was to win NCAAs and make the World Championship team (finish top 3 at the USA Championships). I won both races and so it was a dream come true! Going to Europe and racing was an amazing experience and I am really looking forward to the World Championships in Deagu. You graduated from Crested Butte High School, what was it like growing up there? When I ve been to Crested Butte in the winter, it s pretty much impossible to run anywhere outside with all the snow. How did you manage? Growing up in Crested Butte, a very beautiful small town, was really incredible. Crested Butte has a population of about 1,500 and I only had 19 kids in my graduating class. Growing up in such a small, tight-knit community was a treat. I never ran in the winter growing up in CB because I played basketball in the winter and, like you said, it is almost impossible with all the snow (sometimes 400 inches a year!). Now that I am in college and have to run in the winter, I run on the treadmill when I m home. You did some racing in Europe this summer, recently running a PR of 4:12 in the 1,500 becoming the fourth-fastest Buffalo ever. Tell us about Europe and what it s like racing over there? It was really exciting as this was my first time going over to Europe to race. My coaches Heather Burroughs and Billy Nelson were there and Billy was racing. They have been over there before so they knew how everything worked and showed me the ropes. I was very fortunate that I got the chance to race in Europe and hope to have more opportunities to do it again in my future. You ve stated before that cross country is your weak link, how s the confidence level going into the 2011 season? Are you worried that a summer racing in Europe will leave you fatigued? Cross country has never been my strong point but my last 6 months of racing have given me much more confidence going into this upcoming season. Confidence, along with just better fitness than a year ago, will hopefully help me perform well this season. Excited about CU moving from the Big 12 to the Pac 12?I am excited to race in the Pac 12 both for the great venues, locations and the top-notch competition. The Pac 12 is very deep in cross country, both on the men s and women s side, so this next cross country season should be an exciting challenge and we will have to be on top of our game in order to succeed.

How's your relationship with Jenny (Barringer) Simpson? Jenny has always been a great support and her and I still keep in touch. She was a very big influence on me my first year in school and I learned from her what it was going to take to get the most out of myself with running. Watching what she did her last track season at CU was a real eye opener. I never imagined someone could accomplish the things she did that season. Are you disappointed that Simpson and Anna Willard haven't steepled much in recent years? I always look forward to being pushed and running against those that are faster than I am. I think that is the only way to learn and improve. Obviously Jenny and Anna are two of the best American steeplers in the history of the event and are both World/Olympic medal contenders. They have pushed the standard of steepling to a new level. I would love to compete against them if the opportunity ever came about but they know what is best for them and what is best for their careers. They clearly have had success in whatever event they run. Looking at your Facebook profile, you list Pulp Fiction, The Goonies, Forrest Gump and Dumb and Dumber as some of your favorite movies. Come on you re too young for those movies, have you even watched those flicks? I do really love those movies! I own all of them! I even have a Pulp Fiction poster (of John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson) in my living room. Have you worked much with Billy Nelson? Yea, Billy has been racing all summer and so we often have practice at the same time. He has almost perfect technique so he helps me work on my barrier and water jump form. How is your relationship with Coach Wetmore and how would you characterize his coaching style? Coach Wetmore and Coach Heather Burroughs are both amazing coaches. They are incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to steeple technique and also keep the long-term development in mind. I feel like I am in great hands! Goals for 2011? I would love to PR at Worlds and if it s in the cards, make the finals. For this cross country season, I would be disappointed if I wasn t All-American but more importantly I really want our team improve upon our finish from last year and make the podium as this is my last shot at it. Editor s Note: Emma made the finals of the World Championships Steeplechase. She led after the first kilometer (3:15.93) finishing 4th and therefore an automatic qualifier for the final with a very solid 9:38:42 and then finishing 13th in the final (higher than she was seeded). Personal Motto/Favorite Quote(s): There is no specific quote, but I always want to know that I pushed my self as hard as I could in a race. The biggest failure on the track is getting done and wishing you had pushed harder. Favorite Song(s): Matisyahu Favorite Movie(s): A Knight's Tale Favorite Book(s): West With the Night by Beryl Markham Favorite TV Show(s): Grey's Anatomy, The Office, Man v. Wild Pet(s): Cally, my family's yellow lab Person/People I Admire: My sister because she was someone who always pushed me athletically and motivated me. Lots of credit goes to my parents for constantly support me.
