As a coach: the transformation from non runner to runner As a the Director of DetermiNation: Watching all the DetermiNators run thousands of meaningful miles. hmmmm.. probably providing some challenging workouts to the athletes Train today with tomorrow in mind. What you do and achieve today is just a step forward what you want to achieve tomorrow!

2 DetermiNation Coach: Nina Disi Hometown: New York native (347) / ninadisi@gmail.com 4 years 4 years Marathons = 7 / Half Marathons = I ve stopped counting Berlin Marathon 2012, known as one of the World s fastest courses. The race was well organized and the roads were wide and flat. I was surrounded by great friends and it was a convenient excuse to visit Europe. Running is the best way to explore a new city! My all-time favorite experience is meeting a newbie runner early on in the season and then witnessing them accomplish their goal, as an athlete, crossing the finish line. As a Coach for DetermiNation I look forward to being inspired. Each season brings new and reoccurring participants who really get me motivated. Queens College Take nutrition seriously throughout the season (not just during race week.) Research the variety of nutritional options available to you. I would urge you to sample multiple products/brands and learn which ones will allow you to get an optimal workout.

3 DetermiNation Coach: Lesley Cyrus Hometown: Uniondale, NY 3 years 3 years 16 Marathons/ 30 Half marathons My 1 st NYC Marathon is still my favorite. You ll never forget your first time crossing that finish line. NYC spectators are the best! Seeing the expression on everyone s face after they finish the race they worked so hard for. I look forward to meeting all the first time runners. Undergrad at Lycoming College, Grad school at NYU Make friends. It always helps to have a buddy on a long run or hard workout.

4 Hometown: Albany, NY DetermiNation Coach: Jenn Lenihan / jennifer.lenihan@gmail.com 3 years 2 7 Marathons / 20+ Half Marathons 26.2 miles around Prospect Park with ACS friends. The NYC marathon had been canceled, but our small team came together to raise money and complete what we had started. The camaraderie of the team and NYC runners in general that day was overwhelming. My favorite part of the program is watching people fall in love with running. Some people tell themselves they're just in it for this one event, because someone dared them to do it or just to prove they can. When I see them running their 3rd or 4th marathons or just a race every weekend, it's hard not to smile. While I'm always excited to see people who have been with the program for awhile I just cannot wait to meet new runners. I'll have my eye out the first few practices for people who look like they don't think they can do it. Convincing them of all they are capable of is the best part of being a Coach. SUNY Geneseo Do not give up. You are not going to want to get out there and run every time. Some days will feel terrible. Some days will feel great. Every time counts though toward your training as a whole so you take the good with the bad and just keep getting stronger. Keep your goal in mind and keep getting out there.

5 DetermiNation Coach: Cliff Collins Hometown: Piscataway, NJ 2 years 2 years 14 Marathons /19 Half Marathons Philadelphia Marathon It was my first Marathon The improvement of the runners, from the start of the season to race day. The long runs, this is when I truly bond with my runners. College of Staten Island My tip, is Ramon s: Be smart, train smart and race smart, that s all it takes!

6 Hometown: Middletown, NJ DetermiNation Coach: Ed Schoenwetter 3 years 3 years 3 fulls, 2 halves, various other races/obstacle courses Any one that ends with a beer Aside from meeting truly selfless people, making people do things they did not think were possible Making you suck wind Penn State University I love running (never thought I d say that) but I am also a firm believer in cross training. I think it s imperative to incorporate other exercises in addition to running in order to achieve maximum potential and reduce the risk of a running related injury. It s also important to know that I am one of those weird people that actually enjoys pushing myself to the limit (sometimes to a fault). I love the challenge of being uncomfortable and seeing how the body responds.

7 DetermiNation Coach: Katherine (Kat) Stein Hometown: Scarsdale, New York / katherine.l.stein@gmail.com 5 years About 3 years 12 full marathons and a bunch of half marathons along the way Hard to say! Probably the Philadelphia Marathon in 2010 because I got engaged at the finish line But I m a big fan of events big and small from the Anchorage marathon through the wilderness in Alaska, to the huge crowds of the NYC Full or Half! Every marathon or half marathon is awesome in its own way, especially when you do it with a team like DetermiNation. My favorite thing about DetermiNation is seeing how much just a few months of training can truly change people. Every season, we have a few newbies who come to the first day of practice with no idea what to expect and not sure how they ll make it across the finish line. It s amazing to see their transformation over the course of the season and to see them finish the race with huge smiles on their faces. It s all thanks to the incredible camaraderie, passion and support that comes with being a part of this team. Getting to see some familiar faces and some new ones come together to make an amazing team that not only gets across the finish line, but also helps make a difference in the fight against cancer. The University of Texas at Austin hook em! Have fun, and be proud! What you re doing is truly making an impact on so many lives. You re not just running a marathon or a half marathon you re helping to finish the fight against cancer. Remember that every step you take in your training and on race day is a step closer to a cure.

8 DetermiNation Coach: Michelle Katz Hometown: New York, NY (914) years This is my second coaching season 4 marathons (NYC, Miami, Disney, Anchorage) 4 half marathons (Boston, Brooklyn (twice), Bronx) NYC! Even though I ran it with a broken (but healing) toe, running through my hometown and feeding off the incredible, inspirational crowd was an experience I will never forget! Coaching the half-marathon season this past winter. I loved working with our incredible participants and seeing them all blow the race out of the water! I can t wait to meet all the new participants for the fall NYC marathon season. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing people who have never run before go above and beyond their own expectations and surprise themselves with what they can do. I also am always so touched by the passion people have for ACS s incredible work. Although it makes me sad that so many people s lives have been touched by cancer, it is inspiring to see people taking action to help eradicate this horrible disease. Yale and Harvard Law Come to the Saturday workouts! It s a lot more fun to do the long runs with friends they fly by much faster!

9 Hometown: Santa Monica, CA DetermiNation Coach: Lydia Vanderloo / lvanderloo@gmail.com 4 Years 2 Years 3 Marathons / 16 Half Marathons Running the 2013 NYC Marathon, after 2012 s race was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy, was an amazing experience. The energy of the other runners and the crowd made it a one-of-a-kind event. NYC is the most amazing place to run! Completing an 18 or 20-mile trail run with first-time marathoners is always a season highlight. That, and meeting some great friends. Meeting a new group of runners of all abilities and teaching them to love hills! (Or at least not hate them so much) University of Delaware Work hard and have fun. And never be afraid to ask a question!

13 DetermiNation Coach: Cider Spalding Hometown: Dallas, TX / cyncider [at] gmail.com 4 years 4 years 6 Marathons / 20+ Half Marathons Running the San Diego Rock n Roll Marathon, my very first marathon. I ran it one year after my last chemo. It was a celebration to show that I won against cancer. I also fundraised for cancer research so it was my time to give back and do something that I never dreamed possible. Since then, running has become a part of my life. Seeing how our newbie runners are scared of 5 miles, then 10, then 15 and so on. And suddenly I see a change in their attitude and as they conquer their miles through our workouts. This makes me feel that our team is part of their success. That we are all together to help one another reach our goals and get to that finish line to make a difference for others. Nothing is better! Seeing return runners come back to take on more torture. JK! No it is seeing how every person can grow. Each runner has different goals - from just finishing to hitting a PR - I love being part of their process to reach that goal. University of Colorado HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE! As we conquer more miles in the summer heat and humidity, bring a water or gatorade bottle. Practice hydrating so you are always prepared to take care of your body no matter what weather comes your way
