1 Junior Athlete Race Information Welcome to the Junior Wave of the Windrush Aquathlon This is the 5th anniversary of the race and we have some fantastic prizes and goodies for you! We hope you have a fantastic day. This year we will be raising money for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance to support the life-saving work they do. Post-race massages will be provided by West Norwood Therapies, who are generously giving their time for free, so donations can be made to the Air Ambulance (suggested 5). We will also be holding a raffle at the end of the race with prizes generously donated by Respro. Tickets will be on sale for 1. Thank you in advance for your support. 2 Distances Depending on your age group you will race these distances: TriStar Start & Try-A-Tri (8 years old on the 31st December 2016, or 8-14 years old for Try-a-Tri) 50 metres (swim) 1 length (start at Lido entrance end) 500 metres (run) 1 short lap TriStar 1 (9 and 10 years old on the 31st December 2016) 100 metres (swim) 2 lengths 1 km (run) 1 lap TriStar 2 (11 and 12 years old on the 31st December 2016) 200 metres (swim) 4 lengths 2 km (run) 2 laps TriStar 3 (13 and 14 years old on the 31st December 2016) 300 metres (swim) 6 lengths 3 km (run) 3 laps TriStar 2 and 3 athletes will be given a wristband at the far turnaround point on each lap to keep track of how far they have run. Registration and Race Briefing Registration opens at 07:15am and will be next to the Lido. Please make sure that you have registered by 08.00am in time for the race briefing at 08.15am. The race briefing will be held next to the pool and every competitor MUST attend. The Junior Wave will start at 08:30.

3 Race Day The Swim You will be started by age group and the swim time you have given. You will be started in second intervals. You will need to swim on your front. If you swim on your back this is a sign that you need help from a lifeguard. TriStar Start and Try-a-Tri athletes will start at the end of the Lido near the main entrance, all other Juniors at the far end. If you are faster than the person in front of you then the lanes are wide enough for you to pass them as long as you don t get in their way. You must touch the end of the pool at the end of each length. If you are swimming 200 or 300m you will need to go underneath the lane rope at some points. Please also note there are stone steps at the end of the second to last length, so please be careful if tumble-turning there. You may have a short break at the end of a length or against the lane rope if you are tired. The pool is cooler than an indoor pool so you can wear a wetsuit if you have one, but it is not necessary. You can also get into the pool before you are due to start to warm up in the warm up lane if you want to we will tell you when you can do this. This will also avoid a shock when you get in to start racing. Transition Only competitors and race officials/marshals are allowed into transition after 08.00am. Parents can help set up transition but then must leave. We have a separate transition area for Junior Triathletes, inside the lido complex on the decking next to the pool. Please make sure that you have placed everything you need in transition before 8.00 so that you are ready for the race briefing. You can put your things in the position you like the best. After 8.00 parents and carers will not be able to access the transition area until all Junior Athletes have finished racing. We will have a special marshal to help the TriStar Start and Try-a-Tri competitors remove their wetsuits if they are struggling. The transition area is where you will put on your running clothes and trainers. You will be given a race number at registration and this will need to be pinned onto your t-shirt or you can use a number belt if you have one. Your time in transition will be included as part of your race time so you need to get your run clothes and shoes on as fast as you can. You are not allowed to run over other competitors things in transition! No parents are allowed to help you in transition during the race so it is a good idea to practice this at home before the race. No nudity is allowed in transition so you just need to put a t-shirt on top of your swimming costume. There are to be no bare chests or midriffs on the run.

4 The Run Tri Start and Try-a-Tri racers will race a shorter single 500m loop, turning around a little before the wooden conker, as indicated on the map. A marshal will show you where to turn around. For Tri Star 1, 2 and 3, depending on your age group you will complete 1, 2 or 3 laps of the Junior run course. If you are running the longer lap(s) we will give you a wristband at the far turn point of each loop. It is your responsibility to know how many laps you should run. The course is an out and back course as shown on the map. Marshals will show you where to run and where to turn around. There will be many marshals with bright bibs around the course. Brockwell Park is not flat, and there is a short hill on each lap. The finish line is just near the front of the Lido as indicated on the map. The run course is open to the public, so please be aware that there may be other people about, as well as children and dogs. However, as the race is early on a Sunday morning these will be limited. Refreshments Water will be available at the run start. Bananas and cakes will also be available for free to competitors at the finish. After The Race We have prizes for the first boy and first girl in each age group as well as special medals, generously provided by our sponsors. Everyone who finishes the race will receive a medal and a t-shirt. First Aid If you should have an accident, or feel unwell at any point during the race, please contact a marshal. There are lifeguards on the poolside to help in the pool area and we have first aiders out on the run course.
