3 Commodores Cabin Dear RYC members, Firstly thanks to Gordon, who after 2 years in the role of Commodore, has handed the keys over to me with the club in a great position to move onward and upwards. This being my first report as Commodore I thought I would give you a bit of background to my family history at Rye YC. The Matthews family association with RYC started in the early 1980's where I learned to sail in a Minnow along with my two brothers. Subsequent junior years saw my passion for sailing develop, competing in club, state and national championships in classes from Minnows, 125's and Paper Tigers. Following this I got a career, moved to NSW, sailed a Sydney to Hobart, got married, had kids and then about 8 years ago moved back to Melbourne. This gave me the opportunity to once again reconnect with RYC and to introduce my own kids to the benefits of our great club. Since then I have been heavily involved in the club's management as well as contributing to the junior training programme as a sailing instructor and more recently a development coach. Over the journey both my father Robin and my late uncle Don have been past Commodores of the club and it is with great pride that I take on the role as a second-generation custodian of the club. But enough about me, let's get talking about the upcoming sailing season! We have decided to lock in the Opening Day to the second Sunday in October moving forward. This consistency will help all members who have other co-curricular activities to coordinate and plan around ahead for this important date for the coming years. This year's Opening Day is Sunday October 14 th, The building and maintenance teams have been very busy over the off season, installing new window and door features on the upper deck which will make for some fantastic social activities come sailing season. There have also been some other upgrades to the boat yard and canteen facilities so please come down and enjoy these during the sailing season With the season fast approaching now is a great time to give your boat some off-season love and get your body in shape and to set yourself some goals for the upcoming season. From an Executive Committee level I must also pass on my thanks and gratitude to Robina Locke who has had to resign her role as our Executive Treasurer. Robina has been an energetic and valued member of the executive team and will be missed. Luckily we have had Lena Thomas volunteer for the role and with her experience in this area I'm sure she will quickly become an integral member of our team. I must also provide thanks to David 'Curly' Myers who has also had to step down from the role of Rear Commodore due to personal commitments. Curl has been a valuable member on many of our committees over the years and is always the first one put his hand up to help out. The Executive has appointed Andrew Wallace who has volunteered to step into the role and we are sure he will do a great job. I look forward to catching up with you all at the opening day and throughout the sailing season, May your shifts always be lifts. Doug Matthews Commodore 3

4 Sailing Geoff Abbott from the Coastguard spoke at a recent Sailing Committee meeting. He said we should call 000 in an emergency and they will divert the call to the Water Police. The Water Police will co-ordinate all other agencies and services. Nothing is more effective. 000 calls are prioritized over all calls during busy periods and will work even with an almost flat battery on a mobile. Don t bother calling 1122 or ringing the Coastguard or SPRS, just dial 000. There is also a free app for mobile phones called Emergency + that gives GPS co-ordinates for when calling an emergency number. On behalf of the Sailing Committee WHO HAS RIGHT OF WAY: Noelex vs Whale The sea was calm one winter afternoon. The breeze was light and we had visibility for miles, perfect for an afternoon sail on the Bay and Andrew was itching to get out on the water. All was going smoothly, Sarah had the helm. We were all relaxed and enjoying the winter sun, when suddenly Sarah, looking into the distance saw a splash and called out there are dolphins ahead. We all started looking out for the playful dolphins that usually appear after a big splash. Nothing was seen for a quiet a while and thinking the dolphins had gone the other way (they always do when Janine is on board), the talk got around to the use of life jackets. Suddenly, a large Southern Right Whale breached directly in front of the Noelex. Andrew grabbed the tiller from Sarah who was happy to give it up and did a very quick manoeuvre bearing away as the back of the huge whale slipped past the starboard side of the yacht. The water which had parted as the creature from the deep surfaced quietly followed the whale as she dived under us. It was all over in a manner of seconds, the memory will last a lifetime The screams went far!. The whale gets bigger with every telling! So, the question remains who has the right of way???? 5 Sailing School Report Hi all and welcome to Spring! It is now less than 6 weeks to Opening Day and then the season will be fully underway. With the weather improving quickly, it will not be a surprise to see some members out on the water soon. During September, I am running a Powerboat Handling Course (8 th and 9 th September) and a Safety Boat Operator Course (22 nd and 23 rd September). I will run more of these courses during the season if there is enough interest in them. We certainly would encourage members to do them to increase their power boat driving skills as well as their knowledge of race management procedures and rescue techniques you never know what may happen when you are rostered for Rescue Boat Duty it is always good to be as prepared as possible when you are needed to assist others who may need help. Learn to Sail groups: The first Adult Learn to Sail (Start Sailing 1 & 2) group starts on Saturday 10 th November. The first junior Start Sailing 1 & 2 group also starts on Saturday 10 th November. The first Tackers 1 and 3 groups start on Sunday 4 th November and the first Tackers 2 group starts on Saturday 10 th November. Please note that it is possible that the Tackers 2 and 3 groups could be swapped depending on numbers and peoples availability to attend on Saturday. It has become impossible to run all three Tackers groups on Sunday mornings as we do not have enough resources to continue to do that. All last year s Tackers participants will receive an about the Tackers course times in the next week or so. Sunday Morning Development Squad Groups: As we are making some significant changes to how the Development Squad groups will run, we are having a Launch Day on Sunday 7 th October starting at 11:00am. We would like to talk to both participants and parents about the changes in the program before having a BBQ lunch at 12:00. It will be an opportunity to bring your boats down before Opening Day which is the following Sunday. If the weather is good you will have the opportunity to have a sail after lunch. The regular Sunday morning sessions will start on Sunday 21 st October. If you do want to use a Club boat for this program, please let me know as soon as possible so boats can be allocated. Enrolments will be taken on this day as well. Advanced Sailing Courses: We can run Better Sailing, Start Racing and Better Racing courses on Saturday afternoons whenever we have enough interest to do so. If you would like to do one of these courses, please let me know. There is more information about course content on the Club website. 6 Social Committee News Well just another month and a half and we will be back to the smell of the fresh salty air and the sand between our toes on the weekends. I for one am really looking forward to it, as the family and I have spent the winter months in the snow. First up a huge thanks to Mim Fuggle for her stint as President. Mim you have left big shoes to fill but I ll give it a go! Thank you also to those who have stepped down from the Social Committee and those who are joining us on the Committee for the 2018/2019 season, as the saying goes many hands make light work and this is definitely true. The first sailing dates to put in your diary are the Opening Eve Dinner Saturday 13 th October and the official Opening Day is Sunday 14 th October. As we head into a new season we are going to make a few changes and will try a few new social events so stay tuned. There will be a suggestion box in the canteen, feel free to give us some suggestions and we will see what we can do. One change which has been made over the summer is the removal of the fridges from under the stairs. To comply with RSA regulations as a club we will now serve alcoholic beverages from the canteen. Similar to other club duties, we will be rostering this position throughout the season. I leave you with this quote from one of my favourite authors Mark Twain, Twenty years from now you ll be more disappointed by the things you didn t do, than by the things you did do. 12 Reminders from the Executive Committee This season all alcohol will be served from the canteen where the new fridges are located. As we are trying to encourage the growth of the grass in the boat storage area we ask that skippers and their families do not ride their bikes within the yard. Also dogs are not permitted within the footprint of the RYC building on Club Sailing Days. Members please remember a small plate of morning tea for Opening Day. 12
