SLOUGH NEWS Second Quarter May, 2018 Roy Hays, Commodore Sunday May 6, Opening Day on the Bay Our 2018 Club Officers: Commodore Roy Hays Vice Commodore Charlie Bell Treasurer Lisa Bickford Secretary Samuel Levya Port Captain Bart Laine Director Art Taylor Director Gus Meyner INSIDE Club Calendar Officers Comments Opening Day on the Bay Around the Clubhouse Work Party! 3 OPENING DAY on the SOUTH BAY The annual Opening Day on the South Bay (aka Gin Fizz Breakfast ) was ripsnorting fun. At least 5 dozen people showed up, not just SBYC members, but boaters from many PICYA clubs. As always, the Santos crew, plus their volunteer breakfast elves, fed us like kings. Timo the steel drum guy wowed us with tunes from the islands. Alex kept up with gin fizz. A fun time was had by all... Page 3/19
EARTH DAY OPEN HOUSE An estimated 200 people attended the April 29, 2018 open house at SBYC. Sea Scouts supervised kayak rides, while Russ and Norma and Steve staffed the BBQ. Charlie keeps us safe. Page 4/19
HARRIS-LASS Family Fun Day Save the Date Saturday May 19, 10am-3pm for a Family Fun Day with SBYC and the Harris-Lass Museum. SBYC will be staffing a booth and strutting SBYC s stuff with an eye toward recruiting new members. Please join us! Harris-Lass Museum Page 5/19

COMMODORE S CORNER Commodore Roy Hays roylhays@aol.com Commodore Roy Hays receives a $30,000 check from the South Bay Historic Restoration Foundation. Coming Up: Removing the abandoned pilings... The new dock is on order! Expected Arrival: June 2018! Page 7/19
COMMODORE S CORNER Commodore Roy Hays comments 1. The County dock project is still under review. They did do their detailed bathymetric study a little over a week ago. 2. The Rental brochure is done 3. The State Lands Commission Lease renewal has been submitted. 4. We do not need to renew our permit with BCDC but we do need to amend it indicating the change to new docks. 5. The Club is now a member of the Santa Clara Chamber Of Commerce. 6. We have placed the order for the new dock upgrade. We could still use some more donations to the Historic Foundation to be able to have the dock fully funded. Page 8/19
COMMODORE S CORNER It is with great sadness that South Bay Yacht Club reports the passing of Chris Reed, an invaluable member of South Bay Yacht Club. To honor Chris s many contributions to SBYC, an 8-Bells End Of Watch ceremony is scheduled for May 20, Details will be announced soon. Christine Freed Wrigley Reid - December 25, April 21, 2018 Resident Of Campbell. Christine Drake Reid, passed away Saturday, April 21, 2018 surrounded by her husband and family. Christine enjoyed life to the fullest; she brightened the lives of friends and family through her generosity, interests, and stories of her adventures. 10 HOUSE & GROUNDS WORK PARTY! A hearty THANK YOU for everybody who joined us at the work party Saturday April 14, dozen people attended the work party! Thanks to Charle Bell & Roy Hays for organizing. Thanks to all volunteers who helped! The old abandoned boat is finally gone - thanks to Bart & Kyle! The barn is far more organized The middle bay is now a tool room The south bay (old caretaker s quarters) is now the Alviso Sea Scout Base. Much rubbish was hauled out of the barn. Much more remains to be hauled away. With the completion of the new roof, we are definitely getting there! Page 10/19
HOUSE & GROUNDS HISTORY This photo was found on ebay. Anybody know who these people are? When Sea Scouts were cleaning out the barn s south bay, we noticed this bookshelf hanging on the wall. We realized that the bottom half is covered with mud from the 1983 floods! That's 35 years worth of un-touched mud, which probably makes this bookshelf the last vestige of the 1983 floods. Page 11/19
ON THE DOCKS AND BEYOND! Security cameras have been installed. Solar cells are on order for the hotspot. We should have a reliable solar-powered camera system online soon. Santa Clara Valley Water District repaired the long disintegrating steps up and down the levee Page 12/19

RECIPROCITY Treasurer Lisa Bickford RECIPROCITY - Page 1 of 3 Questions often arise about issues of reciprocity between yacht clubs and the role of PICYA with respect to this matter. There are over 100 yacht clubs and boating organizations in PICYA, each unique in size, structure, membership interests, and facilities. Therefore, it must be the responsibility of each club to develop its own program of activities and its own policies and procedures about reciprocity with other clubs. There is nothing automatic about reciprocal privileges despite the fact that uninformed individuals and organizations pass this word along. While we believe that all our member clubs have a spirit of sportsmanship and friendliness toward other boaters, we support every club s right and responsibility to establish its own policies with respect to visiting privileges. Reciprocity is a privilege not a right. Visiting Protocol and Courtesies of Clubs If your club does not already have a policy on reciprocity and non-member privileges, work with your Board to develop one. In addition to the courtesy that extends to both your members and your guests, it may be important for compliance with requirements of taxing authorities and the Alcoholic Beverage Control(ABC) if you sell such beverages at any time. Page 14/19
RECIPROCITY Treasurer Lisa Bickford RECIPROCITY - Page 2 of 3 A club is no different from a person s home with respect to guests. Most yacht clubs in Northern California reciprocate with other clubs on a formal basis through the exchange of reciprocal cards that are issued on an annual basis. Post the comparable cards that you receive so that mutual arrangements can be made between port and fleet captains or individual members. Be aware of the requirements of the ABC in this regard. These reciprocal privileges are not intended to entitle guests unlimited use of the other s facility. Under no circumstances should a yachtsman assume that all yacht clubs are reciprocal and before requesting entrance, you should check with the club. If visiting a yacht club in another state, first call the club and ask what is needed for you to visit. Usually a letter of introduction from your Commodore on yacht club stationary will help to allow you access to their club for a one time visit. The large national organization that you may want to join or check out is Yachting Club of America and they use the Register of American Yacht Clubs as their reciprocal guide as well as most east coast clubs. Page 15/19
RECIPROCITY Treasurer Lisa Bickford RECIPROCITY - Page 3 of 3 1. Verify that you have reciprocal privileges. 2. Call ahead to ensure that space is available, your visit will not conflict with other club functions, and to make arrangements early in the year for a club cruise. 3. When making arrangements ask about club and marina rules such as, allowing pets, parties, electrical service, etc. 4. Always sign the guest register. 5. Always have a current membership card from your clubs and be prepared to show it. 6. Wear a nametag from your club or sign a stick on badge from the club. 7. Ask for a copy or location of club rules and observe them, you are a guest. 8. Patronize the facilities of the club. They may have brought in extra staff just for your visit. 9. Under no circumstances board or make fast to any vessel without permission. Do not use any equipment left on the dock. 10. Always follow good environmental practice consistent with concerns for proper waste disposal and discharges from your vessel. Leave a clean wake. Most clubs want you to enjoy your visit at their facility. Traditional yachting protocol, courtesy and a thank you goes a long way in fostering good relations between clubs. Page 16/19

SLOUGH CLEANUP Not a SBYC event per se, but Save Our Shores partnered with Western Digital & SanDisk on Friday April 27 to clean up the Alviso Slough. They pulled bags of rubbish out of the slough. We hope to help with many more team-building / slough-cleanup days.
