1 GBBC NEWSLETTER December 2017/January 2018 geilstonbayboatclub.com.au Issue No. 21 CLOSE RACING IN TWILIGHTS Four races have now been held in the Quilt & Pillow Factory Twilight Series 1 with fleets ranging from three in Race 3 (weather forecast was not ideal), to nine in Race 4. In Race 1 only one second separated Bahloo from Pinta with Flying High only 19 seconds behind. Race 2 saw six boats compete with three boats finishing within the one minute. Likewise in Race 3 only 49 seconds separated the two leading boats whilst in Race 4 there was close racing between many of the competitors. Steps have been taken to resolve the issues that have arisen regarding shortening courses. Horizons lead Watershed and Sixpence around Mark G (Photo by Jerome) More close racing between Pinta, Opposition and Tara CALLING ALL TWILIGHT SAILORS PLEASE REPORT TO THE CLUBHOUSE AFTER NEXT RACE In previous seasons those taking part in the twilight races used to congregate in the clubhouse after the event to hear the results, have prizes awarded, view photo/videos of participating boats and take part in a six pack-draw. For some reason fewer and fewer sailors are adjourning to the clubhouse and the committee would like to see the situation reversed. As the last twilight race of Series 1 is on Friday 1 December all sailors are encouraged to gather in the club after the race. The results for the Quilt & Pillow Factory Twilight Series 1 will be announced; there will be a first lap award and there will also be a six-pack draw. 2 Commodore s Report I have set up a strategic planning committee with Brendan Boon, Mike Lever, Nigel Grey, Peter Cusik, John Wilcox, and Tim Marszalek. We have set some positive goals and need to work through them with the aim on finding funding and completing as many of the projects we can. On the water we plan to run a motor and sailboat overnight early New Year. Your new committee has had two meetings and all is positive with some good input. With Xmas only weeks away function hire is good with Wednesday and Friday meals going well. Please support our Xmas functions. A Happy Xmas and a safe and prosperous new year to all. Regards John Brierley CLUB CHRISTMAS FUNCTION Will be held on Friday 8 December Cost for the carvery and dessert will be $25 per head. FATHER CHRISTMAS ARRIVES EARLY ON WEDNESDAY 20 DECEMBER Bring the Children On the last Wednesday in December Father Christmas will be visiting the Club and will be handing out small gifts to children. This will be the last opportunity to enjoy a Wednesday night meal until New Year so bring the whole family along. Children s meals available. Bookings essential. SOCIAL SAIL ON FRIDAY 15 DECEMBER The purpose of this event is to encourage those club members who do not use their boat for other club events to take part in a fun sail on what hopefully will be a pleasant evening. Start time will be at 6:05 pm from the Start Line 1 at the head of Geilston Bay and it is hoped that participants will adjourn to the clubhouse afterwards where prizes may be presented. Members intending to take part should advise either Nigel Grey or Keith Bolton by Wednesday 13 December. If there is little interest the event may be cancelled. Notice of cancellation will be placed on the club website on the Thursday before the event is scheduled. 2

3 16 October 2017 Rene Hidding, Minister for Infrastructure Incentive scheme to update life jackets Being out on the water is part of the Tasmanian way of life, so it s important to keep safe. With a new Australian standard for life jackets becoming compulsory from 2020, the Hodgman Liberal Government has launched a voucher scheme to help boaties replace old life jackets. The $100,000 incentive scheme, being run by Marine and Safety Tasmania (MAST), will mean recreational boaters can get $20 off when purchasing a new standard life jacket at local retailers. A life jacket is the first defence should the worst happen when undertaking activities on the water, and with Tasmania s high proportion of recreational boaters we want to ensure everybody complies with the standard required to keep them safe. Protecting the Tasmanian way of life is part of our Plan to Build Your Future. I encourage all recreational boaters to check their life jackets for compliance with the new standard, as it s a small investment to make to ensure maximum protection for your family and friends. 4 Thylacena enjoys the twilight LAURIE DEAN goes for a run AROUND THE CLUB Strategic Planning A Strategic Planning Committee has been established with the aim to begin taking a strategic view of what needs to be done in relation to Club infrastructure and to prioritize actions. The committee will focus on the following as included in the minutes of the initial meeting: 1. Jetties and Boardwalk. It was agreed that in the first instance an initial assessment needs to be undertaken to try to ascertain what essential work is needed. Brendan to co-ordinate this assisted by Tim. Professional underwater will probably be required. In relation to the Boardwalk it was agreed that consideration should be given to both a fixed or floating structure. Brendan to get some initial advice and again a professional opinion will probably be required. Floating would be a preferable option may not be feasible. 3. Toilets: John indicated that a face-lift of the toilets would be desirable and some screening in front of doorways. John to follow up but this may be left for now. Next meeting when updated information in relation to Jetties/Boardwalk and Boat Cages is available. NEW DINGHY RAMP is nearing completion. Hopefully, thanks to Dad s Army, it will be in place by Christmas. 2. Boat Storage: Nigel had some drawings and costings prepared some years back, he will update these to give us an indication of cost for either 6 or 10 cages. 4
