Call or mos33c20@gmail.com to let them know you are coming The date this year is July 30 th and once again at the same facility as previous years, Mongold State Park. Lunch is when you're hungry. From Interstate 5 South, take the Highway 22 East exit clearly marked for Detroit. Proceed through the towns of Mill City and Gates and the best marker for Mongold is that it follows the sign for slow down to 35 MPH for rough road. Consider bringing your boat. This year there is water, a pleasant change from last year s drought levels. Very nice indeed! 2 BSPS EDUCATION NEWS Lt/C Mike Kondrat, AP BSPS SEO Our Educational year is coming to a close. The 5 students taking Piloting just received their exams back with 4 passing. Junior Navigation is still in session until the end of June, and getting ready for the exams in July. About mid-september we will be starting a Seamanship Class for any students who finished their ABC Class or are just getting into boating. More details coming in August. A few words on classes. Class content has changed over the last few years with the advent of newer technologies to aide us in navigation, safety and/or communications. USPS offers a wide variety of seminars and classes both in person as well as on-line. As Summer wanes think about signing up for a refresher class on some area of boating where you might be struggling or uncomfortable. We are all here to help each other enjoy boating. Having said all this please contact me, mike@kondrats.com, and let me know any areas you might be interested in brushing up. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hadley s Landing Cruise This year s cruise to Hadley s Landing happened during Rose Festival, on June 2016, and so the weather was rather wet and stormy (local Oregon tradition Ed.). Two BSPS boats made it out in spite of the inclement weather, the Bermanns and your humble editor. The NOTS (Northwest Outboard Trailer Sailors) club was there as well and had an excellent time sharing the dock with them. The baked beans and pulled pork for lunch were fantastic as usual. The NOTS group sponsored a dinghy scavenger hunt, which went off even though the rain picked up considerably in Saturday afternoon. Not great weather but good fun notwithstanding. 3 Upcoming Events Time for the second of the year river cruise has come. Please join us at Beacon Rock July 15th thru the 17th. Everyone is welcome by either boat or car. Come up the river by boat, launch from the Washington side ramp at the park, the Oregon side from Dodson, or drive up WA-SR-14 to get there by car. For boaters coming in from the Columbia River: Watch the approach to the dock area, as it s narrow and can get rather shallow. This upriver cruise was called off last year due to low water, but that should be no problem this year. Contact P/D/C Steve Gatton, N-IN, for more information. (see p. 7 for editor.) 4 DISTRICT ANNUAL CRUISE & RENDEZVOUS FRIDAY - SATURDAY SUNDAY AUGUST 2016 St. Helens Waterfront Park, Boat Dock, & Gazebo As St. Helens is so accessible, cruisers can arrive by land or water Spend one day or the whole weekend. So Plot your course by Car, RV or Boat just be there! Remember to wear your squadron name tag! Fun for Everyone! Great Food! Dog Petting! Kid Chasing! Boat & RV Visiting! Story Telling (minor lies and exaggerations tolerated!) New Friendships Made! Old Friendships Renewed! Dry RV Camping in Parking Lot Details are still in progress, but get this on the calendar now. Friday Evening 1730 Lasagna, Garlic and Cinnamon Bread Sticks, Salad with Ice Tea. Cost TBD per Person, Hosted by St. Helens Sail & Power Squadron. Saturday afternoon 1500 at the St. Helens Yacht Club - Steak or Chicken Dinner with Baked Potatoes, Salad and a Roll, Ice Tea or Coffee and Desert. Cocktails will be available at a standalone fee. Cost TBD per Person, Hosted by St. Helens Yacht Club. Make check payable to St. Helens YC. RSVP required for Sat. Dinner Raffle with great prizes following dinner. 5 6th Annual Barbecue at Detroit Lake Where has the summer going? Oh well, the best way to spend the summer is with a barbecue next to a lake in the trees. This year s cookout at Detroit Lake will be Saturday, 30 July and once again it will be at the Mongold State Park. There is a great boat ramp for launching your boat if you should happen to bring one, but of course it's not necessary (at least there is water this year!). The day use fee for the park is $5.00 but it's well worth the cost to watch people launch and retrieve their boats. We'll be at the usual area but the D32 flag will be posted for new attendees. Please me (P/D/C Dave Shively, JN) if you are attending so I'll get the hamburger count correct and also let me know if you have any dietary considerations..
