1 1 June 2014 Annapolis, Maryland Volume 73, Number 6 Commander s Message Kathy Nash, AP It is finally boating weather! I know a lot of us have gotten late starts with our boats due to the long, bad winter. However, now is the time to make your plans for the summer. You will see many options for boating activities we have scheduled for this summer. Please try to join us! We did have two courageous members who had their vessels ready for a very special event. P/C Sam Lyness, N and Lt/C Gary Antonides, AP were escorts for the Carry the Load team who paddled across the Chesapeake. In case you do not know, Carry the Load is a group retired Navy Seals who are trying to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day by connecting Americans to the sacrifices of our military, law enforcement, firefighters and rescue personnel. This is the third year we have helped escort the two outrigger canoes that paddled across the bay. This year Sam and Gary were the only boats ready, but they did a great job and represented Annapolis Sail & Power Squadron proudly. Thank you gentleman! We had a great event on 8 May at Fudruckers. We needed a location for our cruise planning meeting, so we combined it with a fundraiser at Fudruckers. We had about 30 members come out, enjoy an evening away from the kitchen, have fun socializing while helping the squadron. Your new bridge is working to expand our presence in the community and one of the best ways to do this is to give to others. While our financial picture is not bleak, we are looking for ways to increase our funds in a fun way. Thank you Lt/C Joel Hilden, S for arranging and suggesting this event. Please watch for more to be scheduled! Table of Contents Commander s Message Executive Officer s Report 1 2 Speaking of giving to others, we recently presented Chesapeake Regional Accessible Boating a donation. We gave a check for $ towards their mission of making the thrill of sailing a reality for physically and developmentally disabled individuals. They take safe boating to the next level. As you are out and about this summer, tell others about the Annapolis Sail & Power Squadron. Remember I challenged all of you to bring a friend (nonmember) to one squadron event this year. Boating activities count! What a great way to practice safe boating and promote education. John and I will be going on the May Rendezvous and the June Cruise. Please remember you can participate on any of the dates we are out and about. No need to do the entire cruise if you are unable, but join us when you can. I think cruising is about the most fun you can have during the summer. Hope to see you out there! 2 Executive Officer Lt/C John Wesley Nash, JN Last week the U.S. Coast Guard released its 2013 Recreational Boating Statistics. Nationwide boating fatalities for 2013 totaled 560, the lowest number of boating fatalities for one year on record. There were 758 boating fatalities in 2011 and 651 in Since 1997, there has never been a year with less than 651 boating fatalities. The trend over the last few years is differently headed in the right direction. Of the 560 boating fatalities last year, 80% never received boating safety instruction of any kind. Over 97% never attended USPS or USCG Auxiliary boating safety courses. The bottom line is boater education works and it saves lives. That s why the Squadron s educational course offerings and Vessel Safety Check, (VSC), programs are so very important. We are truly helping to save lives, and every member of our Squadron should take pride and be very proud of our efforts. The USCG 2013 Recreational Boating Statistics document contains an enormous amount of detailed statistics and analysis. Much can be learned from reviewing this document on how, when and where boaters have accidents and suffer casualties. You can view and/or download a copy of this document via this link: I am happy to report that our Squadron has already completed over 100 VSCs for This is great news, but we need to work hard to maintain this pace in order to meet our goal of 301 VSCs for Therefore, I am requesting that each Squadron member help with this effort. There are three ways that each of you can help the Squadron meet our goal: 1. If you own a boat, PWC, canoe or kayak, schedule a vessel safety check as soon as possible by contacting D/Lt Homer Sandridge, N via sherrysand@hotmail.com or phone: Do not worry about being able to pass. Our Examiners will help you identify any outstanding issues and provide suggestions on how best to make corrections. They will be happy to return when everything is in order to issue your 2014 VSC decal. 2. We all have friends, neighbors and relatives that own boats, PWCs, canoes and kayaks. Speak with them and encourage them to contact D/Lt Sandridge, N for a VSC. You may find that many are unfamiliar with this program. Feel free to them this link, which outlines everything they need to know: 3. Help promote ASPS VSCs by downloading our custom one page flyer and posting it at any appropriate facility, such as marinas, yacht clubs, stores, social clubs, churches, etc Kathy and I have posted these flyers in many facilities south of Annapolis, but we need your help in placing them in as many places as possible. The more we promote ASPS VSCs, the more successful we will be. Use this link to download the flyer: ANNAPOLIS SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON 2

4 Educational Officer Lt/C Michael Maszczenski, Jr., JN Joint Seminar a Success! Eight people from ASPS and 17 from KNSPS participated at the Kent Island Yacht Club for Fire Extinguisher and Flare training on May 4th. Everyone who participated got to fire multiple flare guns and flares. They also used two different fire extinguisher simulators to put out fires. Everyone had a great time and lots of outdated flares were used up during the training. We are planning to offer this event again next spring. Watch for it on the web page and in the. 7 Safety Officer Capt. Al Ponzio, AP Improve Boat Safety - Get a Free Vessel Safety Check It is that time of year that we push for all boat owners, experienced and not so experienced, to have a vessel safety check performed on their boat. The Vessel Safety Check Program offers free safety checks to boaters who wish to be sure that their boats meet all federal and state requirements. As a joint effort USPS and the USCG Aux. expect to complete over 200,000 voluntary Vessel Safety Checks this year. The no-cost, no-risk courtesy inspections, done at boat ramps, marinas and boat clubs, have ensured the safety of thousands of lives. Having a Vessel Safety Check done on your boat at the beginning of the boating season will help prevent bad things from happening and ensures that if something does occur, you re prepared. It also points out both the required and recommended items to have aboard, such as fire extinguishers, life jackets, distress signals, first aid kits, and engine spark arrestors, and also helps provide a better understanding on the care and use of this critical equipment. Additional items covered include the use of local navigation charts, float plans, safe refueling, ventilation, marine heads, weather, sea conditions, survival tips and more. Self Inspection As an educated Squadron member you most likely know what is required to pass an inspection but sometimes dates (flares) paperwork(registration) and filaments (nav lights) can get by us. It certainly will be an advantage to selfinspect prior to the actual Safety Check and possibly avoid that embarrassing It worked last year moment. So Why do Vessels Fail The following represents a sampling of 100,650 Vessel Safety Checks % Passed the VSC % Failed the VSC The top 10 Reasons for failure 1. Visual Distress Signals % 2. State and/or Local Regulations % 3. Navigation Lights % 4. Registration / Documentation % 5. Display of Numbers % 6. Sound Producing Devices / Bell % 7. Overall Vessel Condition % 8. Fire Extinguishers % 9. Marine Sanitation Device % 10. Personal Flotation Devices % Now that you know what to look for contact D/Lt Homer Sandridge, N via sherrysand@hotmail.com or phone: or one of our proficient and knowledgeable Examiners to have your 2014 Vessel Safety Check. (Continued on Page 8) ANNAPOLIS SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON 7

8 (Continued from Page 7) Questions? When we get the opportunity to do a VSC on someone s boat we usually ask a number of questions and try to steer conversations onto safety issues or general boating knowledge but did you ever wonder what the most asked question by boaters to the examiner is. The number one question is How Do I Get Rid Of My Old Flares Our first response is to inform the boater that it is really not a bad idea to keep some extra flares onboard even if they are expired just as long as you have current dates and separate out the expired from the current. But if you really want to dispose of them there is now away to accomplish that. The Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works now accepts expired hand-held flares, smoke flares, and roadside flares during their Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Days. Anne Arundel County does not accept Aerial/Parachute flares. Aerial flares are considered munitions and may be disposed of by contacting the Taylor Avenue Fire Station in Annapolis. Retired military may also wish to approach the Navy Fire Station at Naval Station Annapolis about disposal Dates and Locations for Disposing of Household Hazardous Waste: For questions and comments on household hazardous waste drop-off days call , or visit our website: REMEMBER SAFET IS A LEARNED HABIT ANNAPOLIS SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON 8
