1 The Best Kept Secret on the Lake for 65 Years Volume 14, Issue 8 Aug 2009 Signals from the Commodore Dear Members, I can t believe that it is already August. As I am writing this article it is finally starting to feel like summer. Despite the cool and rainy early start to the season we have had many members cruising or just enjoying a day on the water. We should be able to enjoy many more weeks of boating with the lake level forecast to be slightly below that of last year but higher than the long term average. With all of the dredging just completed in the harbor we should be in good shape for the remainder of the season. I want to thank Chip Stevens for coordinating the dredging on behalf of the Cornwall Trust. We were quite fortunate that he was able to make arrangements for the dredging to take place so early in the season. In preparation for the dredging the boats along the North shore had to move to temporary dock assignments. There was an occasional glitch with cruisers coming back early only to find a boat in their slip but everyone was very understanding and extremely cooperative. This is just another reminder that the members of PYC are its greatest assets. Next time you are over at the Pultneyville Landing take a look back across the way and you ll see our latest addition a sign advertising membership and docks. The idea came early in the season by one of our members (I only wish I could remember who so that CR would have someone else to blame). It took a little while to come to fruition but with Ron s advice and a lot of labor from CR and Dennis Cooney, Notes from the Vice Commodore Reminders! Reminders! Reminders! A good time was had by all at the first ever Pultneyville Ice Cream Social on July 18 th. Ice cream lovers from around the harbor converged on the Pavilion to enjoy Abbott s sundaes and ice cream sandwiches. Members, homecoming goers, the Sea Scouts and visiting yacht owners were it finally took shape. If we even recruit one member the sign will have more than paid for itself. In this edition of the Soundings there is a fee schedule for HSL. You will see that the fees are the same as last year. As I mentioned at the General Meeting in June, the one difference is that all fees and registration slips are due at the same time on August 20 th. This will allow us to plan more effectively for the two haul outs. One more thing, I want to thank Barry Gheer for displaying the original painting by Franz Schwenk that he won in a raffle sponsored by Hospice. It makes a wonderful addition to the clubhouse. I ll see you at the Club! Anneliese Bopp among those who enjoyed the sweet treats. See the pictures elsewhere in this newsletter. By the time this hits the presses, the Club Cruise will be underway. It is July 31 August 2, hosted by Bob Key Dates This Month August 8 10:00 am Ladies Skipper Race August 8 5:00 pm Club Roast August 15 1:00 pm Commodore s Challenge* (PMI Host) August 22 Hospice Race (Rochester)

This year s roast will be hosted by Don and Deanna Bynes and Jodi and John Rushforth. The flyer for that event is enclosed again in this edition of the Soundings. If you haven t already done so, please send in your reservation or call with your attendance. crew. To date no one has signed up but it is a very easy project. Coordinating this would be perfect for a new member. It is a great way to meet people at the club and I am certain that there will be extra hands make the work go more quickly. The dates are September 19 th and October 17 th. Please let me know if you are available to help. The Burkwits are beginning the The Oktoberfest is planned for planning for the Fall Banquet on September 12 th. It will be hosted by November 7 th. As a place is Eric and Tracy Matteson. Mark booked, we will let you know the your calendars now for this event! location. Details and flyers to be published soon. With haul dates rapidly approaching (yikes!), I could use volunteers to help with food preparation for the And a reminder to those of you who use the club s coolers, barbeque tools, dishes. etc. You are welcome to use them but please leave them clean and dry. With the warm (and humid) weather, it doesn t take much for creepy crawlies to take up residence in and around them! Also, supplies in the back room are for club events. If you are desperate for a cup or plate that s OK but don t plan on using the supplies as a matter of course. As always, many thanks to all who have volunteered to help keep the club s social season going. We couldn t do it without you! That s it for now. See you at the club. Betsy Secretary s Corner Hello, Currently we have 77 voting, 7 nonvoting, and 2 Mariner reciprocal members. The Hospice Regatta will be the weekend of August 22. PYC has always done a great job of supporting this worthy cause. I haven t got a complete list of the members who will be participating in this years events, but hope to share it with you soon. In the mean time, I would like to encourage everyone to support one or more of the PYC member who will be racing this year with a pledge and to sign out to crew on one of the boats if you have an opportunity. Barry Pultneyville Historical Picnic Our members are welcome to attend the Pultneyville Historical Picnic, which will be held in our pavillion. It starts at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5th and there is a program, "2000 Mile Bicycle Trip on the Route of the Underground Railroad." presented by Jim and Carol May. You would need to bring a dish to pass and a placesetting as well. LAKE SOUNDINGS is published monthly for PYC members, February through December.. Letters to the Editor, suggestions, commentaries, wit, memoirs, tales, seaworthy tips and maritime art are welcome. Submissions will be edited and published as space, temperament and accommodations allow Copyright Pultneyville Yacht Club. 3 Volume 14, Issue 8 Page 3 Club members enjoy the Ice Cream Social July 18th! Notes from the Engine Room Dear Members, I am pleased to tell you that there will be NO increase for haul, launch and store for this year. In these financial times everything getting more expensive) your board was able to keep these fees at last years rate. Again, Fred Bertoni will be the haul coordinator. Fred continues to do a fine Job. Please note the cradle and haul out dates: First cradle day Sept. 12 th, 8:00 First haul out day Sept. 19 th,7:00 (Sept. 20 th if needed) Second cradle day Oct. 10 th, 8:00 Second haul out day Oct 17 th,7:00 ( Oct 18 th if needed) The Harbor Dredging was completed July 10 th. There were three areas dredged in the harbor. I will post new harbor soundings as soon as completed. Thanks to everyone on the North Shore who moved their boat to an open slip. Our Commodore deserves most of the credit for finding slips for everyone. She made the phone calls and ed everyone. Good Job Anneliese! There is corn in the shed to throw around your boat for weed control. Please take the time to throw the corn around your boat. Enjoy the rest of the summer. C. R. Burcroff Crossing the Bar It is with deep sadness and regret that we share that Doug Axtell s father, Dan, passed away this past month. Dan was a former Vice-Commodore at PYC serving during the time we built the Pavilion, and was instrumental in getting this built for a reasonable price. Our thoughts and prayers are with Doug and his family.

4 Volume 14, Issue 8 Page 4 A day at the races... You know it will be a tough race when even the windexes can t agree on the wind direction The first race in July (July 2) brought light attendance due to the holiday. Nice breeze, bumpy water and a few wind oscillations, kept the fleet guessing on race strategy. The racing has been wonderfully tight this year, with frequent position changes and fortunes won and lost on each tack decision. Jul 9th brought a new arrival to the fleet...bob Hibbard s Wahoo..a CS30 that just screamed around the course wire to wire. With a really tight line, starting position was critical, and boats trapped in behind others quickly looked for opportunities to escape on the alternate tack. Fleet Captain Flowerday had called for a twice around in nice breeze, but was thwarted in his attempt as the wind went light midway through the race. The lightening wind didn t seem to bother Wahoo however, who found their own private breeze off on the right side of the course and never looked back. The dying breeze coupled with a strong current made decisions on when to tack for the 1st mark a real challenge, with a number of boats needing a second try, and at least one, having an up close and personal encounter with the pin (A bit tight, eh Mark?). Just to make it even more interesting, the wind gods chose to have the breeze fill in from behind, which really tightened up the fleet, with many boats crossing the finish within seconds of each other...except for Wahoo, who I think was probably tucked away neatly in it s slip before any of the rest of us saw the finish line. Great first outing for the new arrival, which looks like it could be the boat to beat for the balance of the season. We need Dulcinea out there to give them a sobering dose of reality on real boat speed! Jul 16th was yet another night of challenging conditions with a little more lump than breeze, making boat speed and boat handling critical. With a little generosity on Cebare s part, we all managed to get off the start line without incident (although at one point, were it not for the skills of the helmsmen, I was sure we had front row seats to see Larry s boat re-christened Cebaredelweiss as it sure looked like Don s boat name concatenated on Larry s). The race was going about as planned until True Colors must have realized upwind means you should turn the boat upwind, and just turned the boat upwind and lit up the after- burners, getting to the the mark first, closely followed by Wahoo. Unfortunately we had a perfect view of their mark roundings, still going upwind while they had already started downwind, so Bob decided to entertain us with his yo-yo spinnaker set (Up-Down-Up-Down-Up). Despite his best attempts to wait for the rest of the fleet, they did get it under control and took off, leaving the rest of us to chase off after them. At the bottom mark, Pandora got to experience what happens when a small boat, Pandora, gets trapped outside of a really big boat, Zest, during a spinnaker takedown. I would have thought Jon would suffocate due to lack of air in behind Larry s boat, but he used his vocal chords to make sure we all knew he was still alive and breathing. True Colors held onto their commanding first leg sprint, finishing well ahead of the fleet, but I don t think anyone minded not winning, as just about everyone set out North after finishing the race to enjoy a most pleasant sunset sail under clear skies, freshening breeze, and flattening water. It just doesn t get any better than this.and then it did, with the Hospice Regatta committee coming out to thank us for PYC s consistently generous contributions to the cause with a cooler full of cold, free beer! Jul 23 brought a threat of thunderstorms, but backup Fleet Captain Blaackman managed to get the race off regardless. Strong breeze out of the South created a super-fast race where the lake was flatter than my living room floor. The storms danced all around us, but by making sure we had a shortened course provision in the race instructions, we insured we wouldn t need it (kind of like carrying an umbrella to be sure it doesn t rain...only this time it worked!) The season is getting shorter...time to come out and join us!!!
