The Peninsula Yacht Club Sailing Camp Prevention Program
The Peninsula Yacht Club (PYC) is located on Lake Norman in Cornelius, North Carolina, 30 minutes north of Charlotte, NC. Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in the state. Lake Norman is home to water recreation and social activities for people of all ages. The Yacht Club is a members-only club with a well-protected marina located in a deep water cove. The marina is owned by Morningstar Marinas. For more information about Morningstar Marinas, please visit The club offers premiere dining in an upscale environment and a family style pool for all members as well. The Peninsula Yacht Club is an exclusive, yet welcoming atmosphere appealing to members of all ages. Sailing Camp at PYC Sailing camp sessions are a week long, and not restricted to club members. Campers must be at least 6 years old and not older than 13 years old to participate in sailing camp. Campers will be divided based on skill level, however no experience is needed. There are a total of six counselors for the sailing camp along with assistance from the main camp, marina and boat shop employees. Head counselor for the sailing camp is Adrienne Kaplan: You may contact her at akaplan@pyccamps.com. Each week four to five counselors take a session out on a sailboat every day for that week. There is one counselor per sailboat and between two and four children per boat. We do not allow more than four children per boat. If the particular session you are interested in is filled, you must choose another session. We do not make exceptions, when the cap is filled we cannot allow any more campers sign up for the session. Below are the sessions we are offering for summer Where we sail At the Peninsula Yacht Club we sail Lasers, a small sailboat, with a single sail, and basic rigs. Our counselors do not leave our deep water cove in the no wake zones leading away from the marina. This way we remain close to the club in case of any emergencies, but are able to teach campers to steer away from other approaching boat traffic. While out on the boat, each camper is required to wear a life jacket that they provide from home or the Peninsula Yacht Club s certified life jacket. If the life jacket that is brought from home does not meet the requirements, we will with place campers in our vests. If you wish to bring you own life jacket, it is the parent s and camper s responsibility to ask our boat shop about requirements. Each day the campers are given more responsibility when sailing and by the end of the week should know all the basic functions and directional lingo of sailing and be able to sail solo.
Safety Before any camper is allowed onto the water, the parent and camper must sign a discipline form, injury form, photo release form, health from, and give us a copy of their insurance card. Discipline form: The discipline form is general for all camps stating that if a camper acts up, they will first get a warning, then get a phone call to their parent, then get sent home from camp. In the case that a camper is sent home from camp, the head counselor will meet with the parent and decide if the child if may return to camp or not. Injury form: In case of an injury, the Peninsula Yacht club is not responsible. Photo release form: Photos of all the student camps are taken each session. Health form: The purpose of this form is to make sure that camper s medical records and shots are all up to date. The health form also asks for emergency contact information as well as a copy of an insurance card. While out in the cove of Lake Norman, each camper and counselor must have a life jacket. Two counselors have walkie talkies that can call into the boat store and one counselor has an extensive first aid kit. Another counselors follows the boats out into the cove with a kayak to supervise all campers, this counselor has a first aid kit and a walkie talkie to reach other counselors and the boat store. Risks and Hazard While at Sailing, we have experienced injuries in the past, and each year we try to develop our program to be better the next year. Each of our counselors are expert sailors as well as all have their lifeguard certification. The counselors are all pre-screened with a background check have gone through training so they are comfortable with all areas of the job. We have the most confidence in our staff that they will try and prevent any risk situation from occurring and handle ones that do with responsibility and efficiency. Splinters: Splinters are common on the dock. We ask that children always have on shoes upon entering the dock. They may only remove their shoes before they get into the sailboat. There are cases where children do not wear shoes or get a splinter in their hand from either falling or sliding their hard on the rail. Each counselor has a mini first aid kit to carry around. These first aid kits have the essential items to remove a splinter. Dehydration: We provide all the Gatorade and water the campers need. All beverages are located in coolers in the conference room adjacent to the dock. A camper may get drinks as they wish, we also take breaks for campers to relax, have lunch, and cool down. Campers will sometimes neglect hydrating enough and get heat exhaustion. Multiple times a day, we remind campers to continue to drink water to prevent dehydration from happening. Falling into the water: Campers sometimes will fall into the water off the deck or the boat, without injury occurring. In this case, we have a lifeguard/counselor help the child out of the water. Children are required to always wear a life vest on the dock or in the boat. The child is required to have some knowledge and experience of swimming in order to take sailing lessons. On the first day of camp, campers are required to take a swimming test as well as a controlled emergency training session in the pool. Injury from the dock: If a camper falls off the dock or into a gap between planks in the dock, and is injured, the counselor will radio the boat shop and depending on the severity of the
injury, 911 will be called. If it is a minor cut or scrape, the counselor will use a first aid kit and clean the wound. For any other injuries, we must call the parent of the camper and take the children to the hospital. All campers are asked to stay behind a designated black line on the dock to prevent falling into the water from pushing and shoving to occur until the counselors have completed rigging the sailboats for the day and the campers may enter. Two members from the boat store are also outside during this time supervising the campers on the deck. Injury from the sailboat: The most common injury that occurs from the sailboat is a camper getting hit by the boom. The boom is the part of the boat and swings back and forth as the wind changes. It is very important for a sailor to always be cautious of the boom, because injury can be catastrophic. Any time a child is hit with a boom they are required to go to the hospital to reduce the uncertainty of any internal wounds. A camper or counselor being hit with a boom happens a few times throughout the summer. To reduce this from occurring, campers and counselors are required to yell, boom over if the boom will be changing directions. Drowning: A camper drowning is the most serious of all risks, because of this possibility all of our counselors are lifeguard certified and in constant communication with one another for any back up they may need. Quite often the sailboat will tip upside down and a child will panic and get caught under the sails. In order to prevent this from happening we give the campers instructions each morning and practice with them on what to do if they are in the water and begin to panic. Risk Management Strategies: being utilized Premises users The peninsula yacht club is a member only club. Camps are not limited to only members. If you are not an employees, guest, or camper you are not allowed on the premises. In order to ensure our premises is safe we inspect the facility to discover defects or hidden hazards each day. All employees must be in proper attire at all times. If anything is broken or missing the boat shop will call the appropriate maintenance person to remove or repair dangerous conditions or damages. Assault and battery Harassment and assault of any form is in a no tolerance with the Peninsula Yacht Club. Any employee or camper that is seen participating in these activities will be immediately banned from the premises and terminated. Legal action will be taken. Agreement to Participate All campers and employees are required to sign an agreement to participate in the sailing camps activities. This consent means the person is willingly entering into this activity and aware of all the risks involved. It is not the Peninsula Yacht Clubs responsibility if an injury were to occur. Insurance The Peninsula Yacht Club s Sailing Camp is insured for the following: Property Insurance General Liability Insurance Employment Practices Liability o Protects from Wrongful Termination
Sexual Harassment Equal Pay Violations Discrimination (Racial, Sex, Age, Disability) American Disabilities Act Motor Vehicle Insurance Boaters Insurance Workers Compensation Policy Before an employee is hired, they are required to review in detail the policy manual and the head counselor will go over the manual before each session. If a policy becomes ineffective the head counselor along with the supervisor for summer camps is a liberty to alter the policy to better fit the camping community. While we encourage each employee to follow as closely to the policy manual as possible, we understand that everyone has a unique and effect way of work. However, if the style of work is ineffective, the employee must follow the policy as they are written from the manual. Failure to do so will result in termination. If an employee does not follow policy and it becomes a liability, the employee is responsible not the Peninsula Yacht Club. Looking towards the future At the end of all the summer camp sessions, the counselors meet with the camp supervisors and Yacht Club supervisors to discuss all areas of the camp s success and failures. We brainstorm new ideas to keep the program fresh and new. It s a workshop from 8am- 2pm and lunch is served for all of the employees. Each year we make it a point to create a better camping experienced for next summer s campers.
