1 IMR TECHNOLOGIES 50 TH GERALDTON OCEAN CLASSIC and GERALDTON RETURN RACE 2018 (Also incorporating the Lobster Pot Regatta, a separate NoR and Sailing Instructions will be issued by Geraldton Yacht Club) The notation [DP] in a rule in the SI means that the penalty for a breach of that rule may, at the discretion of the protest committee, be less than disqualification. 1. RULES 1.1 The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing. 1.2 The Australian Sailing Special Regulations Part 1 for Racing Boats. 1.3 The IRC Rules effective 1 st January Attention is drawn to the following Australian Sailing prescription to IRC rule : Australian Sailing prescribes that in accordance with IRC Rule 11.2, 11.3 and , in IRC races requiring Category 1, Category 2 or Category 3 Special Regulations compliance, a boat may carry one more spinnaker than shown on her current IRC certificate, of an area not greater than rated SPA, without an increase in rating. 1.5 The Notice of Race and these Sailing Instructions. 1.6 In the event of conflict, these Sailing Instructions shall prevail. 1.7 Appendix T Arbitration shall apply. 1.8 Safety Category Races will be conducted under Safety Category 2. 1

2 2. CHANGES TO THE RULES 2.1 RACING AT NIGHT Between the hours of sunset and sunrise the Rules of Part 2 are replaced with the right-of-way rules of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea. 2.2 MOVABLE BALLAST RRS 51 is amended. Boats with moveable or variable ballast (as defined in AS Special Regulations Part 1 Section 3 and AS Special Regulation Appendix B) may move or vary their ballast when racing. Proof of compliance with these Special Regulations must be carried on board and the Race Committee may require copies. 2.3 MANUAL POWER RRS 52 Manual Power will not apply. 2.4 DOUBLE HANDED SAFETY RRS 40 is amended for double handed sailors who must wear a life jacket at all times when on deck except briefly while changing or adjusting clothing or personal equipment. 3. BRIEFINGS 3.1 Compulsory race briefings will be held at the following times and locations: a) 1830 hrs Friday 19 October 2018 at South of Perth Yacht Club. b) 0745 hrs Friday 26 October 2018 at Geraldton Yacht Club. 3.2 Both the Skipper or Navigator or either one of the two, plus one other crew member shall attend. 3.3 If this requirement is not met, the boat may be ineligible to race. 4. NOTICE TO COMPETITORS / CHANGES TO 4.1 Notice to competitors will be posted on the official notice boards located in the foyer of the main Clubhouse at South of Perth Yacht Club and at the Tower at Geraldton Yacht Club. 4.2 If any notices or changes are required, Flag L will be displayed on the Start Boat and the changes will be broadcast on VHF Ch. 72 (Fremantle) or VHF Ch.73 (Geraldton) prior to the start of the first scheduled warning signal. 5. CLASS FLAGS 6.1 Class flags will be: Naval Numeral 1 Naval Numeral 2 Naval Numeral 4 Division 1 Division 2 Double Handed 6.2 A boat s class flag will be displayed from the backstay or mainsail leech when racing. 6.3 The flag shall be removed when no longer racing. 7. THE COURSE & MARKS The course and marks are detailed in Attachment THE START 8.1 Fremantle Start: The starting line will be between the staff displaying an orange flag on the Start Boat at the starboard end and a black and white chequered inflatable buoy at the port end. 8.2 Geraldton Start: The starting line will be between the staff displaying an orange flag on the Start Boat at the starboard end and a red inflatable buoy at the port end. 8.3 A boat that does not start within 30 minutes after her starting signal will be scored Did Not Start without a hearing. This changes RRS A4 and A The Race Committee s intention is to start Div 1, 2 & Doublehanded together. 8.5 The Race Committee may broadcast the final seconds of each sequence on VHF Ch. 72 (Fremantle) or VHF Ch.73 (Geraldton). 8.6 RRS 29.1Individual Recall shall apply. 8.7 After the starting signal the Race Committee may broadcast the sail numbers of those boats that have not complied with RRS It is the responsibility of a boat to monitor the radio for this information. Failure of the Race Committee to make a broadcast or a boat to receive any broadcast will not be grounds for redress. This changes RRS THE FINISH 9.1 Descriptions of both finishing lines are detailed in Attachment Boats finishing during the hours of darkness shall illuminate their sails when crossing the line, and should cross as near as possible to the inner end to assist the finish team. If prevailing conditions render boat identification difficult for the finish team, boats should use VHF radio to ensure they have been identified correctly. 3

4 10. PROTESTS AND REQUESTS FOR REDRESS 10.1 Protest forms are available from either of these locations: a) In the foyer of the main Clubhouse at South of Perth Yacht Club. b) The Tower at Geraldton Yacht Club Protests and requests for redress or reopening shall be delivered to the offices of either yacht club within the appropriate time limit For all divisions, the protest time limit is 6 hours after the protesting boat finishes the race; unless extended by the Protest Committee Notices will be posted no later than 6 hours after the PTL to inform competitors of hearings in which they are parties or named as witnesses Hearings will be conducted at either South or Perth Yacht Club or Geraldton Yacht Club. 11. HANDICAP DIVISIONS 11.1 The race will be conducted and scored in IRC and YAH handicap divisions Boats shall sail in the divisions allocated by the OA. 12. RETIRING BOATS A boat retiring from the race shall notify the Race Committee via VHF Radio as soon as possible, giving its position, reason for retirement, intended port of destination and ETA, together with any other relevant details. 13. EQUIPMENT AND MEASUREMENT CHECKS A boat may be inspected for compliance with the Special Regulations and Rating Rules when required by the Race Committee at any time except whilst racing. A boat shall comply with all reasonable requests from the Race Committee to facilitate an inspection. 14. EVENT ADVERTISING [NP][DP] Boats shall display event advertising supplied by the organising authority as follows: IMR Technologies bow stickers to be adhered to all boats (each side of the bow). The stickers are to be installed as follows: a) The stickers are not to be reduced in size. b) The stickers shall be parallel to the deck. c) The forward edges of the stickers shall be approximately 450mm from the bow of the boat. d) The top edges of the stickers shall be lower than the bottom of the gunwale. 4

5 15. OFFICIAL BOATS The start boat for the Fremantle to Geraldton Leg will be Fremantle Port Authority vessel, Response. The start boat for the Geraldton to Fremantle Leg will be Geraldton Yacht Club s Graham Leevers. 16. RADIO COMMUNICATIONS [NP] 16.1 Radio Checks Prior to the 1 st warning signal of each leg of the race, each boat shall contact Offshore Race Control on VHF Ch.72 (Fremantle) or VHF Ch.73 (Geraldton)to check its radio and confirm the number of POB (Persons on Board). Failure to demonstrate satisfactory communication shall result in the boat being scored DNS. Offshore Race Control will give each boat a reference number after its satisfactory check-in Listening Watch A continuous listening watch shall be kept at all times. All boats shall maintain a continuous listening watch on VHF Channels 16 and the VHF repeater channel for the area in which the boat is located as detailed in Attachment Position Reports Position reports will be required at: (a) Latitude South on VHF Ch. 21 (b) As boats pass abeam of Point Moore, Geraldton on VHF Ch. 82 (Northbound) (c) As boats pass abeam of Fairway Landfall Buoy, Fremantle VHF Ch. 81 (Southbound) Boats shall report their longitude and time of passing and will receive an acknowledgement from the appropriate shore base. If a boat is unable to contact Race Control by radio for a position report, and is unable to contact another boat to relay their position, a boat may use a satellite/ mobile telephone to call Race Control if service is available and report their position. 17. COMMERCIAL SHIPPING 17.1 Particular care should be exercised in the following areas: (a) At the entrance to Fremantle Harbour. (b) At the Northern Entrance to and in the Cockburn Sound Channel. (c) The deepwater channel in Gage Roads marked Green No. 1 Buoy, Red A Buoy, Green No. 2 Buoy, Green No. 3 Buoy, and Red B Buoy. (d) Fairway Landfall Buoy If the Fremantle Port Authority or any country port authority lodges a formal complaint with either South of Perth Yacht Club or Geraldton Yacht Club, 5

6 that a boat has failed to keep clear; the Race Committee will score that boat as DSQ without a hearing. This changes RRS TRACKERS 18.1 Each boat will be supplied with a Yellowbrick tracker by the OA and shall be switched on and attached to the boat as per supplied instructions at all times while at sea, whether racing or retired. In the event of the failure of a tracker, the Race Committee will advise the boat by radio and from that time, the boat shall report its position not less than every hour In the event a tracker cannot be provided, the Race Committee reserves the right to permit a race entrant to compete without a tracker. 19. PRIZES & TROPHIES Prizes and trophies are detailed in Attachment DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY A boat participates in these races entirely at her own risk, see Rule 4 Decision to Race. The Organising Authority, its associates and appointees will not accept responsibility for material damage or personal injury or death or inconvenience sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during or after the races. By participating in these races, a boat agrees to release the race organisers from any and all liability associated with such participation in these races to the fullest extent permitted by law. 21. INSURANCE A boat shall be insured with a valid third-party liability insurance policy with a minimum cover of $10 million (ten million dollars for any one incident). By taking part in these races, owners are deemed to have made a declaration that they have such cover. 22. MEDIA DISCLAIMER Competitors agree to grant the Organising Authority the right in perpetuity to make, use and show, from time to time and at their discretion, any motion pictures, still pictures and live, taped or film television and other reproductions of the athlete during the period of the competition without compensation. The approximate centre of the line will be South; East. The marks may be lit at night. Finish Line, Fremantle: Between a point approximately 150 metres east of the South Mole lighthouse and an outer yellow buoy (approx South; East) bearing approximately 180 at a distance of 0.15 nautical miles from the South Mole.

General Manager s Trophy: Awarded to the boat predicting the most accurate ETA, from latitude South prior to the finish (awarded for both the Geraldton Ocean Classic and the Geraldton Return).
