1 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS The Acorn Llangorse OnBoard Regatta rd and 4th September 2016 Royal Oak Llangors Lake Sheltered Water Coached Open ideal for new racers (sailors and windsurfers) Junior Event (16 or under on the 31 / 12 / 2016) SAILING INSTRUCTIONS Objective This junior regatta aims to build on 2016 club training by providing competition in sheltered water, coached environment. Sailors, windsurfers and parents from clubs across Wales are invited to enjoy a friendly, relaxed event. All are welcome from first time racers to competitive Regional Squad members aspiring to join the Welsh National Squad Fleets Eligibility General Handicap Any RYA recognised junior classes which is not included below Topper Silver Sailors who have completed Club Open training, the CYRC series or regularly Club Raced (4.2) Topper Gold Sailors of Gold or Silver standard at Regional or CYRC events Optimist Silver Sailors who have completed Club Open training, the CYRC series or regularly Club Raced Optimist Gold Sailors of Gold or Silver standard at Regional or CYRC events OB General Handicap Any RYA recognised junior classes which is not included below OB Topper Training Ideal for Topper sailors for less expereinced Topper sailors at their first event OB Optimist Training Young sailors in any wooden or glass fibre Optimist competing at their first event OB Optimist Bat Young sailors competing in Plastic Optimists Windsurfers All windsurfers welcome. National Squad (Welsh or GBR) different class - Are not eligible to sail their normal class of boat, but may enter in a Ethos It is the ethos of the Acorn Regatta to welcome and help less experienced sailors/windsurfers. Experienced (Gold) fleet sailors and parents are asked to always assist less experienced sailors at this event with tasks such as - check rigging, advise on how to replace unsuitable kit, what to do at the event, launching etc.

2 Dear Sailor/Windsurfer On behalf of RYA Cymru Wales, Llangorse SC and Acorn Adventure may I wish you all a warm welcome to the Llangorse SC and Acorn Adventure Junior OnBoard Regatta. We have set out to keep this event as friendly and tailored to first time racers as possible, and in doing so it s encouraging to see clubs from around Wales not only sending sailors, but helping us and the event by supplying instructors and coaches to assist on the water. The event sets out to achieve 3 aims: i. Provide a safe sheltered coached event for sailors/windsurfers coming to their first ever sailing event, ii. Provide quality racing for the more experienced iii. Help the best from the Welsh National Squads have a go sailing a different (possibly future) class of boat. Camping is available at the Acorn site or one of the other local campsites. To assist you please find below some helpful contacts and their roles throughout the event; they will be more than happy to answer any of your questions and will be available to offer assistance on and off the water. May I finally thank Acorn and Llangorse SC for their support once again this year and wish you all fair sailing and good winds for the weekend, and hope you enjoy your visit to Llangors. They can provide an advisory hearing (no penalty) but you find out and learn from what would probably have happened, or the RYA arbitration (20% penalty) instead of a full protest, which provides a quicker and lower penalty outcome if you both agree. 3 2016 South and West Acorn Llangorse OB Regatta Sailing Instructions 1.0 RULES The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing ( ). 2.0 CONDITIONS OF ENTRY 2.1 The rules regarding eligibility shall be as per the Notice of Race. The decision of the Organising Authority shall be final regarding matters of eligibility. 3.0 NOTICES TO COMPETITORS Notices to competitors will be posted on the Official Notice Board, which will be inside the event Marquee. 4.0 CHANGES IN SAILING INSTRUCTIONS Any change to the sailing instructions (SI) will be posted at least 45 minutes before the advertised starting time of the race or races concerned except that any change to the schedule of races will be posted by 20:00 on the day before it will take effect. 5.0 SIGNALS MADE ASHORE 5.1 Signals made ashore will be displayed on Acorn Adventure Flagpole. Launching signals will be made from the beach master flagpoles on or adjacent to the Acorn launch sites and maybe accompanied by a 1 long sound signal. No boat may launch until the appropriate flag is displayed. The flying of a Code flag A (Blue & White) will mean that sailors on Course Alpha may launch. The flying of code flag B (red flag) will mean that Course Bravo may launch. The flying of a T15 flag will mean that the windsurfers may launch. The launch signals will be relayed to sailors launching at Llangors Sailing Club by the Llangors slipway Beach master 5.2 When flag AP is displayed ashore, 1 minute is replaced with not less than 15 minutes. 6.0 SCHEDULE OF RACES 6.1 Eight races are scheduled apart from the windsurfing which may be more. There will be no more than 6 races sailed in any one day. Number of races and timings for windsurfers will be at the discretion of the windsurf coaches. Day Time Saturday 1125 warning signal for the first race of the day Sunday 0955 warning signal for the first race of the day 6.2 When there has been a long postponement and when more than one race (or sequence of races, for two or more classes) will be held on the same day, the warning signal for the first race and each succeeding race will be made as soon as practicable. To alert boats that a race or sequence of races will begin soon, an orange flag will be displayed with one sound for at least two minutes before a warning signal is displayed. 6.3 On the last day of the regatta no warning signal will be made after 14: CLASS SIGNALS Optimist (Silver/Gold) Topper (Silver/Gold)) General Handicap Code flag O (Alpha Course) Code flag T (Alpha Course) Code Flag G (Alpha Course) General Handicap classes of 6 or more entries; maybe given their own start. This will be announced at the briefing. OB Plastic Optimist OB Optimist Training OB Topper Training OB General Handicap Fleet Colour Flag(s) as described at the briefing (Bravo Course) Fleet Colour Flag(s) as described at the briefing (Bravo Course) Code flag T (Bravo Course) Code Flag G (Bravo Course) 8.0 RACING AREAS The racing areas to be used shall be announced at the briefing. It will be the intention of the race committee to sail the Alpha course (Main Fleet) towards the far end of the lake, race the Bravo course (OB Fleet) near the launch sites, and have the windsurf course off the beach (avoid weed). 9.0 THE COURSE The course configuration and order of rounding marks will be announced at the briefing and shall be displayed on the official notice board.

4 10.0 MARKS Course marks will be described at the briefing and shall be displayed on the official notice board THE START 11.1 The starting line will be between a staff displaying an orange flag or shape on the race committee boat at the starboard end and the port end starting mark as explained at the briefing and shown on the official notice board Boats whose warning signal has not been made shall avoid the starting area If any part of a boats hull, crew or equipment is on the course side of the starting line during the 2 minute before the starting signal the race committee will display flag V. It will be displayed until all boats have sailed completely to the pre start side, but not after the starting signal In the event of General Recall the warning signal for the recalled class shall be made one minute after the First Substitute is removed (one sound), and the starts for any succeeding classes shall follow the new start CHANGE OF COURSE 12.1 To change the next leg of the course, the race committee will lay a new mark which shall be an Orange Dan Buoy and make the signals as described in RRS If the race committee signals a shortened course (displays flag S with two sounds) the finishing line shall be: at a rounding mark or finish mark, between the mark and a staff displaying flag S THE FINISH 13.1 The finishing line will be between a staff displaying a blue flag on a race committee boat and the finishing mark The position of the finishing line relative to the course will be explained at the briefing and displayed on the official notice board Boats may be finished at any point on the course by a race committee boat displaying Flag W or letter W accompanied by 1 sound signal TIME LIMIT The time limit will be 45 minutes. Boats failing to finish within 20 minutes after the first boat sails the course and finishes will be scored Did Not Finish. This changes rule 35 and A PROTESTS & REQUESTS FOR REDRESS 15.1 Any boat wishing to protest shall inform the appropriate Committee Boat at the end of the race. Failure to do so will render the protest invalid. This adds to the requirements of RRS Protests shall be written on forms available at the race office and delivered there within 45minutes after the time of the last boat's finish in their class. If races are sailed back-toback protests shall be lodged within 45 minutes of the finishing time of the last boat in their class Protests will be heard in approximately the order of receipt as soon as possible The Advisory Hearing and RYA Arbitration / Exoneration Penalty [20%] of the RYA Rules Disputes Procedures will be available. See the official notice board for details OUTSIDE HELP At the discretion of the race committee official support boats only may help competitors. The application of this SI shall not give grounds for redress. The extent of help will be dependent on ability and at the discretion of appointed official support boats. This clause is an addition exception to those listed in rule PRIZES The regatta perpetual Welsh trophies will be awarded to the overall winner in each class, who satisfies Welsh eligibility. Other overall prizes may be awarded depending on entry.

5 18.0 RISK STATEMENT Rule 4 of the Racing Rules of Sailing states: The responsibility for a boat s decision to participate in a race or to continue racing is hers alone. Sailing is by its nature an unpredictable sport and therefore involves an element of risk. By taking part in the event, each competitor agrees and acknowledges that: a) They are aware of the inherent element of risk involved in the sport and accept responsibility for the exposure of themselves, their crew and their boat to such inherent risk whilst taking part in the event; b) They are responsible for the safety of themselves, their crew, their boat and their other property whether afloat or ashore; c) They accept responsibility for any injury, damage or loss to the extent caused by their own actions or omissions; d) Their boat is in good order, equipped to sail in the event and they are fit to participate; e) The provision of a race management team, patrol boats, umpires and other officials and volunteers by the organiser does not relieve them of their own responsibilities; f) The provision of patrol boat cover is limited to such assistance, particularly in extreme weather conditions, as can be practically provided in the circumstances; g) [For offshore races] They are responsible for ensuring that their boat is equipped and seaworthy so as to be able to face extremes of weather; that there is a crew sufficient in number, experience and fitness to withstand such weather; and that the safety equipment is properly maintained, stowed and in date and is familiar to the crew DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY Competitors participate in the event (s) entirely at their own risk. See rule 4, Decision to race and item 15 of the Notice of Race. The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damages or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior, during, or after racing.
