2 Merits of This is a Meccan sūrah. The surah that proclaims God to be the Lord of the heavenly ascents, LOFTY STATIONS, the points of rising from which the angels ascend to God. It takes is named after the phrase of lofty stations (dhi al-maʿārij) in verse 3. The surah describes the Day of Judgement (verse 8). One of the opponents of the Prophet challenged him to hasten the punishment they had been threatened with (verse 1), so the foolishness of the disbelievers in denying the Resurrection (verse 6) is exposed (verse 36). The people who will be granted the Garden are described (verse 22). It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) that the reward for reciting this surah is equivalent to the total number of people who keep up prayer and safeguard the property which has been entrusted to them. Imam Muhammad al-baqir (a.s.) has said that the one who recites this surah will have his sins hidden on the Day of Judgement and he will enter Jannah alongside the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.). If a prisoner recites this surah, he will secure his release. Imam Ja far as-sadiq (a.s.) said that if this surah is recited before sleeping, one keeps safe from the temptations of Shaitan.

5 ص ا ل ص ائ و ب ػ ذ اب و ال ع ١ An asker asked for a punishment bound to befall ایک ماهگےن والے هے والع ہ هے والے غذاب کا ص ال کیا एक भ गन व र न घट त ह न व र म तन भ ग, saˈala sāˈilun bi-ʿaḏābin wāqiʿin

8 ث ػ ر ج د ار ى و الر وح إ ل ي ف م ه ان م ك ال م ل ئ ن ة خ م ش ن ال ف ص و ة ٤ The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in a day whose span is fifty thousand years. جس کی طرف فرظےت اور روح االمین بلود ہ ثے ہیں اس ایک دن کے برابر ےہ میں جس کی مكدار پچاس ہزار صال फ रयश त औय र ह (जजफय र) उसक ओय चढत ह, उस टदन भ जजसक अवधध ऩच स हज य वषष ह taʿruǧu l-malāˈikatu wa-r-rūḥu ˈilayhi fī yawmin kāna miqdāruhū ḫamsīna ˈalfa sanatin

9 ٥ ف اص ب ر ص ب ر ا ج م ل So be patient, with a patience that is graceful. ا پ لہذا بہجرین صبر صے لیں کام अत ध मष स क भ र, उत तभ ध मष fa-ṣbir ṣabran ǧamīlan

10 إ ه م ر و ه ي ب ػ د ا ٦ Indeed they see it to be far off, یہ ل گ اصے دور صمجھ رےہ ہیں व उस फह त द य द ख यह ह, ˈinnahum yarawnahū baʿīdan

11 و ه ر اى ل ر ب ا ٧ and We see it to be near. اور ہم اصے لریب ہی دیکھ رےہ ہیں ककन त हभ उस ननक द ख यह ह wa-narāhu qarīban

12 ن الش م اء و ٨ ث ن م ه ال م The day when the sky will be like molten copper, جس دن ا صمان پگھےل ہ ئے ثاهبے کے ماهود ہ جائے گا जजस टदन आक श त र क तरछ ज स क र ह ज एग, yawma takūnu s-samāˈu ka-l-muhli

13 ػ ن ه ال ٩ ج ب ال و ث ن ن ال and the mountains like [tufts of] dyed wool, اور پہاڑ دھوکے ہ ئے اون جیشے औय ऩवषत य ग-बफय ग ऊन क सद श ह ज ए ग wa-takūnu l-ǧibālu ka-l-ʿihni

14 و ال ش ال ح م م ح م م ا ١٠ and no friend will inquire about [the welfare of his] friend, اور ک ئی ہمدرد کشی ہمدرد کا پرصا ن حال هہ ہ گا क ई लभत र ककस लभत र क न ऩ छ ग, wa-lā yasˈalu ḥamīmun ḥamīman

15 ب ص ر وه م م ج ر م د ال ل ف ج د ي م ن غ ذ اب م ئ ذ ب ب و ي ١١ [though] they will be placed within each other s sight. The guilty one will wish he could ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children, اج کے دن کے غذاب کے بدلے اس وہ صب ایک دوصرے ک دکھائے جائیں گے ث مجرم چاےہ گا کہ کاش کی اوالد ک لے لیا جائے ह र कक व एक-द सय क टदख ए ज ए ग अऩय ध च ह ग कक ककस प रक य वह उस टदन क म तन स छ न क लरए अऩन फ, yubaṣṣarūnahum yawaddu l-muǧrimu law yaftadī min ʿaḏābi yawmiˈiḏin bibanīhi

16 و ص اح ب ج ي و ا خ ي ١٢ his spouse and his brother, اوربی ی اور بھائی ک अऩन ऩत न, अऩन ब ई wa-ṣāḥibatihī wa-ˈaḫīhi

17 ج ث ؤ و ي ج و ف ص ل ي ال ١٣ his kin which had sheltered him کوبہ اور اس ک جس رہجا ثھا وہ میں औय अऩन उस ऩरयव य क ज उसक आश रम द त ह, wa-faṣīlatihi llatī tuˈwīhi

18 و م م ر ض ج م ػ ا ث ن ف اال وج ي ١٤ and all those who are upon the earth, if that might deliver him. اور رو ئے زمین کی صاری مخل لات ک اور اصے هجات دے دی جائے औय उन सब र ग क ज धयत भ यहत ह, कफ दम (भ जतत-प रनतद न) क र ऩ भ द ड र कपय वह उसक छ क य टदर द wa-man fī l-ˈarḍi ǧamīʿan ṯumma yunǧīhi

19 ١٥ ل ظ إ ه ا ه ل Never! Indeed it is a blazing fire, ا ثض یہ هہیں ہرگز جہو م ےہ कद पऩ नह! वह रऩ भ यत ह ई आग ह, kallā ˈinnahā laẓā

20 اغ ة ١٦ ل لط ى ه ز which strips away the scalp. کھال اثار دیےن والی ज भ स औय त वच क च ज एग, nazzāʿatan li-š-šawā

21 ث د غ م ن ا د ب ر ١٧ ل و ث It invites him who has turned back [from the truth] and forsaken [it], دے ا واز ک ان صب رہی ےہ ج موہ پھیر کر جاهے والے ثھے उस व मजतत क फ र त ह जजसन ऩ ठ प य औय भ ह भ ड, tadʿū man ˈadbara wa-tawallā

22 ١٨ ف ا و غ و ج م ع amassing [wealth] and hoarding [it]. اور جوہ ں هے مال جمع کرکے ثھا رکھا کر بود औय (धन) एकत र ककम औय स त कय यख wa-ǧamaʿa fa-ˈawʿā

23 إ ن ا ل هش ان خ ل ق ل غ ا ١٩ Indeed man has been created covetous: بیطک اهشان بڑا اللچی ےہ ननस स द ह भन ष म अध य ऩ द ह आ ह ˈinna l-ˈinsāna ḫuliqa halūʿan

24 إ ذ ا م ش ي الط ر ج زوغ ا ٢٠ anxious when an ill befalls him جب ثکلیف پہوچ جاثی ےہ ث فریادی بن جاثا ےہ जज उस तकर फ ऩह चत ह त घफय उठत ह, ˈiḏā massahu š-šarru ǧazūʿan

25 ر م و غ ا ٢١ خ و إ ذ ا م ش ي ال and grudging when good comes his way اور جب مال مو جاثا ےہ ث بخیو ہ جاثا ےہ ककन त जफ उस सम ऩन नत प र प त ह त ह त वह क ऩणत टदख त ह wa-ˈiḏā massahu l-ḫayru manūʿan

26 م ص ل ن ٢٢ إ ال ال [all are such] except the prayerful, غ لوہ ان همازی ں کے ककन त नभ ज अद कयन व र क फ त औय ह, ˈillā l-muṣallīna

27 ال ذ ن م غ ل ص ل ث م د ائ م ن ٢٣ those who are persevering in their prayers ج اپوی همازوں کی پابودی کر هے والے ہیں ज अऩन नभ ज ऩय सद व जभ यहत ह, allaḏīna hum ʿalā ṣalātihim dāˈimūna

28 م ال م ح ق م ػ ل م ٢٤ و ال ذ ن ف ا and in whose wealth there is a known right کے اور جن ام ال میں ایک مكررہ حق مػین ےہ औय जजनक भ र भ wa-llaḏīna fī ˈamwālihim ḥaqqun maʿlūmun

29 م ح ر وم ٢٥ ل لش ائ و و ال for the beggar and the deprived, ماهگےن والے کے ماهگےن هہ اور لےئ والے کے لےئ भ गन व र औय व धचत क एक त औय ननजश चत ह ह त ह, li-s-sāˈili wa-l-maḥrūmi

30 و ال ذ ن ص د ل ن ب م الد ن ٢٦ and who affirm the Day of Retribution, اور ج ل گ روز لیامت کی ثصدیق کر هے والے ہیں ज फदर क टदन क सत म भ नत ह, wa-llaḏīna yuṣaddiqūna bi-yawmi d-dīni

31 ن غ و ال ذ ن م م ذ اب ر ب م م ط ف ك ن ٢٧ and those who are apprehensive of the punishment of their Lord اور ج اپےن پروردگار کے غذاب صے ڈر هے والے ہیں ज अऩन यफ क म तन स डयत ह - wa-llaḏīna hum min ʿaḏābi rabbihim mušfiqūna

32 إ ن غ ذ اب ر ب م غ ر م ا م ن ٢٨ (there is indeed no security from the punishment of their Lord) بیطک غذاب پروردگار بے خ ف رہےن والی چیز هہیں ےہ उनक यफ क म तन ह ह ऐस जजसस ननजश चन त न यह ज ए - ˈinna ʿaḏāba rabbihim ġayru maˈmūnin

33 و ال ذ ن م ل ف ر وج م ح اف ظ ن ٢٩ and those who guard their private parts اور ج اپوی ظرمگاہ ں کی حفاظت کر هے والے ہیں ज अऩन ग प त ग क य कयत ह wa-llaḏīna hum li-furūǧihim ḥāfiẓūna

34 غ ر غ ل إ ال م م ف إ ه و م ا م ل ن ت ا م اه ا ز و اج م ا م ل م ن ٣٠ (except from their spouses and their slave women, for then they are not blameworthy; غ لوہ اپوی بی ی ں اور کویزوں کے اس کہ پر م لمت هہیں کی جاثی ےہ अऩन ऩजत न म म ज उनक लभल क भ ह उनक अनतरयतत द सय स त इस फ त ऩय उनक क ई बत सषन नह - illā ʿalā ˈazwāǧihim ˈaw mā malakat ˈaymānuhum fa-ˈinnahum ġayru malūmīna

35 م ذ ل ا ء و ر ن اب ج غ ف م ئ و ن م ال ػ اد م ف اول ٣١ but whoever seeks beyond that it is they who are the transgressors) پھر ج اس کے غ لوہ کا خ اہطمود ہ وہ حد صے گزر جاهے واال ےہ ककन त जजस ककस न इसक अनतरयतत क छ औय च ह त ऐस ह र ग स भ क उल र घन कयन व र ह - fa-mani btaġā warāˈa ḏālika fa-ˈulāˈika humu l-ʿādūna

36 و ال ذ ن م ال اث م و غ د م ر اغ ن ٣٢ م اه and those who keep their trusts and covenants, اور ج اپوی اماهج ں اور غہد کا خیال رکھےن والے ہیں ज अऩन ऩ स यख गई अभ नत औय अऩन प रनत क ननव षह कयत ह, wa-llaḏīna hum li-ˈamānātihim wa-ʿahdihim rāʿūna

37 و ال ذ ن م ب ط اد اث م ل ائ م ن ٣٣ and those who are observant of their testimonies, اور ج اپوی گ اہی ں پر لائم رہےن والے ہیں ज अऩन गव टहम ऩय मभ यहत ह, wa-llaḏīna hum bi-šahādātihim qāˈimūna

38 و ال ذ ن م غ ل ص ل ث م ح اف ظ ن ٣٤ and those who are watchful of their prayers. اور ج اپوی همازوں کا خیال رکھےن والے ہیں औय ज अऩन नभ ज क य कयत ह wa-llaḏīna hum ʿalā ṣalātihim yuḥāfiẓūna

39 ئ م ا ول ف ج و ات م ن ر م ن ٣٥ They will be in gardens, held in honour. یہی ل گ جو ت باغز ت میں طریكہ صے رہےن والے ہیں वह र ग जन नत भ सम भ नऩ वषक यह ग ˈulāˈika fī ǧannātin mukramūna

40 ف م م م ذ ن ه ف ر وا ل ب ل ال ال ط ػ ن ٣٦ What is the matter with the faithless that they scramble toward you پھر ان کافروں ک کیا ہ گیا ےہ کی طرف ا پ کہ بھاگے چےل ہیں ا رےہ कपय उन इनक य कयन व र क तम ह आ ह कक व त म ह य ओय द ड चर आ यह ह? fa-mā-li llaḏīna kafarū qibalaka muhṭiʿīna

41 غ ن ال م ن و غ ن الط م ال غ ز ن ٣٧ from the left and the right in batches? داہیں بائیں صے گروہ در گروہ द ए औय फ ए स धगय ह क धगय ह ʿani l-yamīni wa-ʿani š-šimāli ʿizīna

42 ػ م ج و ة ه م و م ان د خو ام ر ئ م ع هو ا ط ٣٨ Does each man among them hope to enter the garden of bliss? ان کیا میں صے ہر ایک کی طمع کہ یہ ےہ اصے جوت الوػیم میں داخو کردیا جائے तम उनभ स प रत म क व मजतत इसक र रस यखत ह कक वह अन कम ऩ स ऩरयऩ णष जन नत भ प रपवष ह? ˈa-yaṭmaʿu kullu mriˈin minhum ˈan yudḫala ǧannata naʿīmin

43 ه ل و ا ك إ ه ا خ ل م م م ا ػ ل م ن ٣٩ Never! Indeed We created them from what they know. اهہیں هہیں ہرگز ث مػل م ےہ هے کہ ہم اهہیں کس چیز صے کیا ےہ پیدا कद पऩ नह, हभन उन ह उस च ज स ऩ द ककम ह, जजस व बर -ब नत ज नत ह kallā ˈinnā ḫalaqnāhum mimmā yaʿlamūna

44 ف ل م غ ا ل ش م ب ر ب ال م ط ار ق و ال ٤٠ ك اد ر ون ا ل ار ب إ ه So I swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests that We are able میں ثمام مطرق و مغرب کے پروردگار کی کھا کر لشم کہجا ہ ں کہ ہم لدرت رکھےن والے ہیں अत क छ नह, भ सभ ख त ह ऩ व औय ऩजश चभ क यफ क, हभ इसक स भर थमष प र प त ह fa-lā ˈuqsimu bi-rabbi l-mašāriqi wa-l-maġāribi ˈinnā la-qādirūna

45 غ ل ر ا م و م و م خ ا ه ح ن ب م ش ب ل ن ان ه ب د ل ٤١ to replace them by [others] better than them and We are not to be outmaneuvered. اس بات ان صے بدلے کے پر کہ ان بہجر افراد اور ہم ا ئیں لے غاجز هہیں ہیں कक उनक उनस अच छ र आए औय हभ पऩछड ज न व र नह ह ʿalā ˈan nubaddila ḫayran minhum wa-mā naḥnu bi-masbūqīna

46 ر م ف ذ ػ ب ا خ ض ا و ل ح ج ذ ي ل ل ا م م ال غ د ون ٤٢ So leave them to gossip and play until they encounter their day, which they are promised: لہذا اهہیں چھ ڑ دیجےئ یہ اپےن باطو میں ڈو بے رہیں اور کھیو ثماظہ کر ثے رہیں صے م للات کریں جس کا وغدہ کیا گیا ےہ یہاں ثک کہ اس دن अत उन ह छ ड कक व व मथष फ त भ ऩड यह औय ख रत यह, मह तक कक व अऩन उस टदन स लभर, जजसक उनस व द ककम ज यह ह, fa-ḏarhum yaḫūḍū wa-yalʿabū ḥattā yulāqū yawmahumu llaḏī yūʿadūna

47 م ج د اث ص ر اغ ا ه اه م خ ر ج ن م ن اال ب ه ص إ ل ف ض ن ٤٣ the day when they emerge from the graves, hastening, as if racing toward a target, جس دن یہ صب لبروں صے ثیزی کے صاثھ هکلیں گے جس طرح کشی پرچم کی طرف بھاگے جارےہ ہ ں जजस टदन व ब र स त ज क स थ ननकर ग ज स ककस ननश न क ओय द ड ज यह ह, yawma yaḫruǧūna mina l-ˈaǧdāṯi sirāʿan ka-ˈannahum ˈilā nuṣubin yūfiḍūna

48 ذ ي ال م ال ة م م ذ ل ر ك ب ص ار م ث ذ ل خ اظ ػ ة ا ه اه ا غ د ون ٤٤ with a humbled look [in their eyes], overcast by abasement. That is the day they had been promised. کی ان هگاہیں جھکی ہ ں گی اور ذلت ان پر چھائی ہ گی اور کیا گیا ےہ یہی وہ دن ہ گا جس کا وغدہ ان صے उनक ननग ह झ क ह ग, जजल रत उनऩय छ यह ह ग मह ह वह टदन जजसस वह डय ए ज त यह ह ḫāšiʿatan ˈabṣāruhum tarhaquhum ḏillatun ḏālika l-yawmu llaḏī kānū yūʿadūna
