1 2018 Spring and Summer Series May 8 - Sept. 6, 2018 National Yacht Club Toronto, Ontario NOTICE OF RACE 1 RULES The racing will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing. 2 ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY 2.1 Racing is open to all keelboats owned or chartered by National YC members in good standing. 2.2 Keelboats from neighbouring clubs may participate with permission from the National YC Vice Commodore, Fleet. 2.3 Eligible boats may enter by completing the Spring and Summer Series registration and waiver form online at by Thursday, May 3, Late entries may be accepted at the discretion of the race committee. 2.5 There is no registration fee. 2.6 Thursday division eligibility: (a) A boat racing with a female skipper and with women representing 50% or more of the combined number of skipper and crew is eligible for the Women s series. (b) A boat racing under the helm of a sailor with less than two years experience at helming in a race is eligible for the Beginner series. (c) A boat racing with one skipper and one crew is eligible for the Double-handed series. Boats ordinarily sailed by one skipper and one crew (e.g., Stars) are not eligible. 3 SCHEDULE 3.1 Registration opens April 2, Weekly schedule: Tuesday divisions: Whitesail, Quarter Ton, Shark Wednesday divisions: Spinnaker Thursday divisions: Beginner, Double Handed, Women s

2 3.3 Dates of racing: Practice starts May 8 to 10, 2018 Spring Series Tuesdays May 15 to July 3, 2018 Wednesdays May 16 to July 4, 2018 Thursdays May 17 to July 5, 2018 Summer Series Tuesdays July 10 to Aug. 28, 2018 Wednesdays July 11 to Aug. 29, 2018 Thursdays July 12 to Aug. 30, 2018 Crew Races Sept. 4 to 6, The Spring and Summer series consist of eight (8) races each with one (1) race per day scheduled except for Sharks whose series consist of sixteen (16) races with two (2) races scheduled per day. 3.5 The scheduled time of the first warning signal for each day is 1825h. 3.6 A competitors briefing will be held on Friday, May 4, 2018 at 1900h in the National YC dining room. 4 MEASUREMENTS 4.1 Boats racing in the Shark division shall have a valid Shark class certificate. 4.2 The Quarter Ton division shall consist of San Juan 24s, Northstar 500s, C&C 24s, C&C 25s, Albin 7.9s, Viking 22s, and any boat that can show that it or a sistership held a valid IOR certificate prior to 1979 with a rating between 17.0 and 18.0 ("Quarter Ton"). Other similarly-matched boats may be accepted at the discretion of the Race Committee. 4.3 Boats racing in all divisions other than Shark and Quarter Ton shall have a valid PHRF-LO certificate. 5 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS The sailing instructions will be available no later than 1200h on May 4, 2018 at 6 VENUE The racing area will be in Lake Ontario West of the Toronto Islands.

3 7 THE COURSES The courses to be sailed will be windward-leeward, triangle or other courses, sailed around fixed and/or inflated marks. 8 PENALTY SYSTEM 8.1 The first two sentences of rule 44.1 are changed to: A boat may take a One-Turn Penalty when she may have broken a rule of Part 2 or rule 31 while racing. However, when she may have broken a rule of Part 2 while in the zone around a mark other than a starting mark, her penalty shall be a Two-Turns Penalty. 8.2 After a race, a boat that may have broken a rule of Part 2 or rule 31 while racing may take a Post-Race Penalty for that incident. The penalty shall be a Scoring Penalty, calculated as stated in rule 44.3(c). However, rules 44.1(a) and (b) apply. A boat takes a Post-Race Penalty by informing the race committee in writing, identifying when and where the incident occurred. 8.3 The Post-Race Penalty shall be: (a) 20%, if taken before the protest time limit; or (b) 30%, if taken after the protest time limit but before the beginning of a protest hearing involving the incident. 9 SCORING 9.1 Scoring will be the Low Point System as described in RRS Appendix A with the following changes: (a) A boat that did not come to the starting area (DNC) shall be scored two (2) more than the number of boats that came to the starting area. (b) A boat still racing when time limit expires (TLE) shall be scored two (2) more than the number of boats finishing. 9.2 One race is required to be completed to constitute a series. 9.3 Series discards shall be as described in the following tables. Classes with 8 races per series: Races Completed Discards Fewer than 5 None Classes with 16 races per series: Races Completed Discards Fewer than 6 None

4 9.4 A boat that is not able to compete in a midweek race because she is representing National YC at an away regatta may apply to the race committee for placing in the missed race(s) equal to average points in the series not counting the missed race(s) plus one (1) point. Each subsequent week missed will have one (1) additional point added to the average. 9.5 Boats racing in the Shark division on Tuesdays may only claim average scoring for the Shark World Championship. 10 PRIZES 10.1 Prize flags for first, second and third place will be awarded in each division for each midweek racing series, overall performance in both series, and the crew races NYC trophies will be awarded for the best overall position in each division, as determined by a boat s total score based on all races completed in both series, excluding her worst 30% of races. Trophies will not be awarded where fewer than two boats qualify for standing in the division. 5 11 DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY Competitors participate in the racing entirely at their own risk. See rule 4, Decision to Race.
