It was Hot in classical fashion anyway but fun doesn t end. Our club is still here pumping out entertainment and fun for everyone. Due to popularity of The club opening on Sundays, the club will continue to open on Sundays and even open earlier to accommodate your tail-gating for Sunday games. Sandy is still serving food so come enjoy the Saints games! I would like to update everyone on a few club matters. As mentioned last month, we have a hoist for launching race boats. We were working with the harbor to select a location for installation. It appears that currently there is no suitable location within Long Beach Municipal Harbor, but we are continuing to explore options. We are currently relying on neighboring clubs and launching ramps for launching our boats. This is working presently but we want to be self-sufficient. We would like to be able to launch our new Viper in our harbor. We will keep everyone updated on this progress. We have recently had reports from the City concerning security on club property. We have had vagrants and other trespassers causing concerns. The City is patrolling our property in an effort to curtail unauthorized visiting. We ask that all members who are on club property during non club operating hours please cooperate with authorities if asked to identify yourselves as members. Please understand this is to protect club assets and our members. Please do not authorize any guests to use club amenities without being accompanied by a member. We don t want to publicly publish the new combinations which have been updated. Contact any board member for the new combos. All members are welcome to access the pool outside of club hours of operation but again please remember, guests are ONLY allowed when accompanied by the member. Unaccompanied guests will be escorted off the property by law enforcement per the Harbor Master. Coming around the corner: A few of our amenities must be addressed for upkeep, maintenance, and improvements. I recommend everyone take this hard fact into consideration and assist us as we search for solutions. Amenity number one needing attention the soonest is our pool. Ours is on borrowed time. We have started pricing a replacement which will hopefully be larger and last as many years as the current one has. The other item of concern is the continual fight to keep the club cool during the summer month s events. We have gotten pricing for adding more and different types of air conditioning. That stuff aint cheap! We will discuss further as it appears a capital campaign may be in our future. Until then, keep coming down and enjoying your club! Sail on, D
3 Hospitality We offer our deepest sympathy to the families in the recent loss of their loved ones - our member and friend Joey Stokes, son of member and Past Commodore Tom Stokes, and former long time member and friend, Ms Betty D Aquilla, mother of member and Past Commodore Holly Murray & mother of member Rose Pouriraji. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Losing our Friend Erin Keefer The sailors and I are deeply saddened by the loss of Joey Stokes. Words cannot express the time and effort Joey contributed to our sailing program. Through patient instruction, he molded several sailors into excellent racers, including Khloe Ohliger, Maddy Murray, Lyda Murray, Quentin Whitsitt, Ricky Welch, Colby McClain, Trevor Watts, Grant Johnson, Jordan Previto, myself, and many others. Joey was always there to help us young sailors as we learned. Like Ms. Holly, he knew the importance of fostering youth sailing, and he always showed that through his actions. We saw him as our go to man that we knew would have the answer, and if he didn't, he would find it out. Just the other week, after skippering the Viper for the first time, Joey texted me that he had been watching YouTube videos for three hours trying to figure out exactly how to work this boat that just didn't behave like a Flying Scot. Joey was tough on the kids he raced with but only because he knew their potential. He was the first person to ever let Khloe skipper a race. She was so fearful of making mistakes, but he was kind and remained patient with her because he knew that she could do it, and eventually do it well. What she thought would be a terrifying experience, turned her into a skipper for years to come. He was always up to, what he would call it, "shenanigans". You couldn't help but laugh and shake your head at the goofy things he did or the stories he told you. Some of Khloe s and my best memories of racing throughout the years have been with Joey. He taught us his pirate songs, how to spot a shift, and that the real race is the one to the yacht club. I didn t know it when I first met him, but he became one of the most important people in my life. When you race with someone, you experience victories and losses, weather storms that you don t want to sail into, but you know you have to, and share hilarious moments, like someone falling out of the boat in the middle of the race. You impress each other and disappoint each other, but it didn t matter if it was a good day or a bad day, he was there, and you always walked away knowing it was a good day on the water. We were so very fortunate to have known Joey for as long as we did, and my hope is that each and every one of us remembers to enjoy our time here with the same carefree loving attitude that Joey had. 4 House August was a quiet month but things will be picking up in September and October the Luau is coming in September with Cruisin the Coast and Halloween in October. Please check the calendar for scheduled events. Thank you to everyone who helped with the Send Off Party for our Ricky Welch as he prepared to go to Kiel, Germany, to compete in the 2018 Laser Radial Youth World Championship. We re all so very proud of you Ricky! Come down to the club on Thursday evenings for and enjoy delicious sides to accompany your grilling choice prepared by our Chef Daniel and wonderful desserts prepared by Sandy Pace. Sandy is also preparing delicious Friday night dinners for a very affordable price and you might be the lucky Friday Night Bell Ringer winner! The club continues to be open on Sunday and will be extended to include football season. We will start opening from 11:30-6:00. We have hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries & nachos available for purchase as well as cold beverages. Come enjoy & watch your team win (hopefully!) Please check the calendar and newsletter for details on what s going on in September and all upcoming events. Also, look for flyers and reminders that might be on our website, sent to you via and/or text or on the tables at the club and as always, see you at your club! Friday Night Bell-Ringer Joe Fleming Winners, winners everywhere. It has been a good month for the members. A winner each Friday evening in August. Who were they? Just come to the Club House on Friday evenings, enjoy a Happy Hour" beverage, savor a delicious, inexpensive light meal and collect your bar tab when your name is randomly drawn from all present before 8:30 PM.
5 Ricky Welch Sails On! Christy Welch With 400 sailors from 45 nations aging 15 and 18 years, Ricky Welch participated in the 2018 Laser Radial Youth World Championship in Kiel, Germany. The event, which totaled 11 races within six days sailing 2 races a day, would provide all types of conditions from light to strong and shifting winds on the Baltic Sea. After three days of racing Ricky earned his spot in the Gold Fleet to compete for a podium finish. However, just like rain and sunshine took turns, the sailors were also experiencing lows and highs, sometimes in front in a race and then ending up in the middle of the fleet in the next one. Overall, it was an exciting event and we are so proud of Ricky placing a respectable 20th in World at the World Championship. We would like to thank all of our family, friends, yacht club family and community for their love and support. With college on the horizon and Olympic dreams there is one thing for certain, Ricky Welch SAILS ON!
