Races on both days. 28 th January Social Night Commodore s Report Dear Club Members, Weather to date has been challenging which has reduced the number of races achieved, but some great work has been done around the club lead by Murray and the team during the recent working bee s. Thanks to all who have got involved. Coming up on January 28th/29th will be our Australia Day Regatta, which we have advertised with some other classes including the Impulses. It should make for a very exciting weekend of racing and social activity and it would be great if you could get down to the club to either sail or offer a hand in assisting our race day activities on either of the two days. Well done to Ben in picking up a 3rd and 4th in individual heats, giving an 11th overall in the series. In travelling to other clubs, it certainly helps me appreciate the facilities and sailing conditions that we are lucky to enjoy at Rhyll. Wesley Moore Rear Commodores Report Well, we ve managed to get some good sailing in over the Christmas - New Year s period. The Summer Series was a good weekend with six boats on the water, with good knot breezes on both days. Andrew and Duncan McCowan had some competition in the form of Greg Graham, a visitor from Latrobe Valley YC with his Flying 15. Ray and Kay sailing the Corsairs were hounded on both days by Murray G in his 420, and the 29er blazed around the course frequently displaying it s centre board and never crossing the start line they looked like they were having fun and slept well that night.. Our next day of racing was 7th Jan, with CS7&8 in the morning and VC 5&6 in the afternoon. The wind again was very light and we on managed to get one race in the morning and one in the afternoon Trailerables 'Red for Romance' 11 th February Time: 6.30pm Come and enjoy a Valentine s meal. $15 a head $50 a family Please wear a touch of red. The Trailerables and Keelboats are getting active this year. We had another well attended Cruise to Sandy Point on the 6th Jan. This Cruise is on the Yachting Westernport Calendar and is attended by all classes from all the Westernport clubs. There were 5 boats from Rhyll among at least 40 boats ranging from Pacers to 40ft Keelboats. 3 Racing wise, we aren t doing as well, only 2 boats (Time Traveller- Ray Flatters, Widow Maker Roger Hansen) represented Rhyll in the first of the Triangular Series races. We would have had a third boat, but the forecast put the crew of Chapter Four off. It would be good if we could get 3-4 boats regularly representing the club in this long established friendly series with our Island Clubs. Yachts at Sandy Point. Wes and Mark with their home built boats and Ben with a new professionally built boat. We arrived on 1 st January took the boats to the club and went and unpacked at the 3 bedroom house we had rented, then it was time for the boats to be rigged, Wes took 617 out for a sail. He found a couple of creaks that had to be fixed, so off to the local hardware he went and in true Moore style he fixed the boat and was ready for the first race. 47 boats were entered from all over Australia, the largest entrants the Impulse association have had in all the years they have held the nationals. With the first day of racing being 42 degrees, lots of water and sunscreen were in order to even rig the boats let alone sail them. Mel and I stayed in the water watching them sail for quite some time. It was the best place to be on a hot day. Ben and Wes had a very healthy competition going on. The second day was a low wind day and only one race was sailed, day 3 saw the winds pick up to 22knots and beyond, causing damage to quite a few boats, all Rhyll boats were safe however. Ben and Wes, call it brave or not, stayed out in the winds to sail home strongly. Day 4 saw the winds picking up strongly again which called Mark back in without finishing the race, not being a strong wind sailor after all, whereas Ben and Wes love the strong winds and it paid off in the results for them. Day 5 saw Mark breaking the mainsheet blocks from the boom and having to come back in to fix it to sail back out and start the race strong only to end up being towed back in because his rudder box gudgeon came off and is now at the bottom of Port Phillip Bay. The pressure was on for Wes and Ben to finish well so that they would be in the top 20 overall. Day 6 the final races were sailed, Mark not sailing with an injured boat still, Ben fighting for his right to finish high on the handicap ladder, and Wes sailing Continued on following page...

4 ...continued from previous page hard to keep in the top 20. As you will see from the results below Ben finished extremely well overall, getting 2 nd in the handicap ranking, and 11 th in the open category with Wes in his first year at the Impulse Nationals finishing 19 th. Mark got 46 th place which wasn t bad considering the problems he had with his boat and the wind being strong. Next year s nationals are to be held at Lake Macquarie, and we are looking forward to another great week of sailing. Kate Results Race 1 was sailed in 8 knot winds 611 came 26 th 617 came in 28 th and 612 came in at 45 th. Race 2 winds increased to 12 knots saw 611 and 617 coming in equal 13 th and 612 came in at 37 th. Race 3 the winds were very low dropping down to 2 knots 611 came 13 th, 617 came 18 th and 612 got a DNF due to the drop out of wind. Race 4 strong winds gusting from 22 knots to 28 knots 21 st place th place for 611 and 612 DNS Race 5 only 23 boats were brave enough to stay out in the strong seas this got th place th place and 612 DNS Race got 14 th place 19 th for 617 and 612 was a DNF due to mainsheet issues Race 7 saw 611 getting a 10 th place and 617 an 18 th place 612 DNS Race got 3 rd place 617 got 23 rd and 612 DNS Race th place 617 got 22 nd unfortunately 612 got a DNF due to the 20min finish time Race nd place for got 24 th place and 612 got a DNF Race got 15 th place 617 got 26 th place and 612 DNS Race got 19 th place and 617 got 23 rd place 612 DNS The overall results saw Ben in Danger Mouse th place getting Wes in 1 2 Many 617 getting 19 th place and Mark in Rhyllistic 612 getting 46 th Ben rounding a mark in Danger Mouse. Firstly sorry for the delay in this edition of Craft Night I have been a little preoccupied with Christmas and nationals Marks boat was completed in record time poor Wes boat took 3 months to build but Mark s was completed in 6 weeks. The boys are on hiatus so that they can enjoy the summer of sailing but there is still plenty of conversation between them regarding the boats. Wes completed his boat with a wooden rudder box and fibreglass centreboard and rudder, he has gone with mist grey with purple wings it sure does look fancy on the water and was put to the test at the Impulse nationals at Portarlington.

5 If you have not seen it yet get down to the club and check it out he has proudly named it 1 2 Many which is in relation to the amount of boats he has and not the amount of drinks he has. Ben helped Mark complete the boat while Wes completed his at the factory. There was even more discussion on how the thwart should be done they decided on fibreglass where Wes went with wood. The time came to cut a hole into the boat poor Mark really didn t want to put a hole in his new boat but it had to be done otherwise there would be no where for the centreboard to go and even I know that is an important part of the boats. The hole was cut very slowly it was definitely a measure twice and cut once job. Mark made his own centreboard, rudder and rudder box they all look great, Marks colouring is blue hull and mist grey deck he named his pride and joy Rhyllistic. Rhyllistic was launched at the RYC opening day from the boat ramp due to low tide, was a proud moment for all seeing the home built boats sail out into the distance however as we were heading back to the club I could see Mark was heading back in thankfully he just needed to tighten a few ropes and he was off again PHEW. The moulds are at the Moore factory waiting for the next round of boat building begin, unsure who s boat will be next but there is talk that 1 2 Many will become Amy s boat and Wes will get another new one. The boys are very optimistic believing they could get the mould work completed in a weekend if they work real hard at it however until Sailing season is over there will be no more boat building just yet.
