8 Air form in large clumps and move over the Earth s surface and slowly change. These huge bodies of air that cover thousands of kilometers are called AIR MASSES. Two Properties of air masses are: 1. Moisture content 2. Temperature An air mass has some of the same general properties as the land or water that it forms over. Air masses with moisture form over water and dry air masses form over land. Air masses that form at the poles are cold and the ones that form in the tropics (or near the equator) are warm.

17 When 2 air masses meet, they do not mix. What happens is that they form a border that is known as a front. Most of the weather that we think of happens along fronts.

19 Cold Front Facts Forms when a fast moving cold air mass moves under a warm air mass pushing the warm air up. Brings thunderstorms, snow or heavy rain. Weather that follows-clear Cooler temperatures behind the front.

23 Warm Front Facts Forms when a slow moving warm air mass overtakes a cold air mass. Because the cold air is more dense than warm air, the warm air moves over the cold air rising Brings clouds and long steady rain. Weather that will follow-clear & warm

25 Stationary Front Facts The front is not in a hurry, it is very slow or not moving. Forms when a cold air mass collides with a warm air mass and neither is strong enough to move/overtake the other. This usually means really long periods of clouds and steady precipitation. Clear weather will follow The symbol for this front is alternating blue triangles and red half-circles facing in opposite directions.

27 Occluded Front Facts Forms when a warm air mass is caught between two cold air mass pushing the warm air mass off of the ground and higher. Weather it brings-cool temperates and heavy/large amounts of rain or snow Weather that will follow is clear symbol for this front is alternating purple triangles and half-circles pointing in the direction that the front is moving.
