1 ب س م الل ه الر ح م ن الر ح يم ال ح م د ل ل ه ال ذ ي أ نز ل ع ل ى ع ب د ه ال ك ت اب و ل م ي ج ع ل ل ه ع و ج ا ١ In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Very-Merciful. [All] praise is [due] to Allah, who sent down upon His Servant the Book and has not made in it any crookedness. All praise is due to Allah for all the ni mahs, specifically the ni mah of the Qur an and for revealing it upon His servant and messenger; The Book refers to the Qur an Beginning ayahs describe features of Allah s book Before outlining the features, Allah Most High clarifies about His book: He has not made in it any crookedness is for something to be bent عوج Example: An upright tree v.s. one that is bent towards one side The Qur an, in it s words and meanings, contains no deviance 3 3

2 ق ي م ا ل ي نذ ر ب أ س ا ش د يد ا م ن ل د ن ه و ي ب ش ر امل ؤ م ن ني ال ذ ين ي ع م ل ون الص ال ح ات أ ن ل ه م أ ج ر ا ح س ن ا ٢ م اك ث ني ف يه أ ب د ا ٣ [He has made it] straight, to warn of severe punishment from Him and to give good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have an excellent reward. In which they will dwell forever. ع و ج is reinforcing the same point that the Qur an does not not contain قيم ا The word ق ي م is in the meaning of mustaqīm م ستقيم i.e. straight Another meaning of it is muhāfiz م ح افظ i.e. something that guards Warnings for those who disbelieve and good tidings for those who believe The excellent reward اجر ا ح س ن ا refers to Paradise Paradise is forever, so is Hellfire 4 4

3 و ي نذ ر ال ذ ين ق ال وا ات خ ذ الل ه و ل د ا ٤ م ا ل ه م ب ه م ن ع ل م و ال آل ب ائ ه م ك ب ر ت ك ل م ة ت خ ر ج م ن أ ف و اه ه م إ ن ي ق ول ون إ ال ك ذ ب ا ٥ And to warn those who say, "Allah has taken a son. They have no knowledge of it, nor had their fathers. Grave is the word that comes out of their mouths; what they say is nothing but lies. A special warning for those who attribute imperfection to Allah Most High Ignorance upon ignorance is the basis for their aqidah Merely inventing things, without basis, about Allah is a serious crime hence Allah says grave is the word Value knowledge and its holders otherwise the consequences are dire 5 5

4 ف ل ع ل ك ب اخ ع ن ف س ك ع ل ى آث ار ه م إ ن ل م ي ؤ م ن وا ب ه ذ ا ال ح د يث أ س ف ا ٦ So, (O Prophet) are you going to kill yourself over them if they do not believe in this message out of grief? Our Prophet ﷺ fikr (concern) for humanity s salvation was immense The Qur an consoles him ﷺ and the Sahabah in various places 6 6

5 إ ن ا ج ع ل ن ا م ا ع ل ى األ ر ض ز ين ة ل ه ا ل ن ب ل و ه م أ ي ه م أ ح س ن ع م ال ٧ و إ ن ا ل ج اع ل ون م ا ع ل ي ه ا ص ع يد ا ج ر ز ا ٨ Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it so that We may test them as to who among them is better in deeds. And surely, We will make that which is upon it into a barren ground. After consolation, pointing to the reality of the issue: This Dunya is a place of test Some pass, some fail Everything in the Dunya is an adornment for it Even harmful things as one thing may be harmful to one but beneficial to other Because this Dunya is adorned, some are deceived by it not realizing that all of this is temporary, one day it will become ص ع يد ا ج ر ز ا (barren ground) 7 7

6 أ م ح س ب ت أ ن أ ص ح اب ال ك ه ف و الر ق يم ك ان وا م ن آي ات ن ا ع ج ب ا ٩ Do you find the Companions of the Cave and al-raqim so wondrous, among all Our signs?
