3 Introduction: The presented short article below is compiled from one of the most basic books on Ziyarah of Masomeen asws, Kamil Al-Ziyarah, written by Ibn Qulawayh Al-Qummi in the 4 th century. Please note, some of the traditions of Masomeen asws on the rewards of Ziyarah of Imam Hussain asws mention various levels of rewards, which is not due to the contradictions in traditions but simply due to the Marifat of those who were present in front of Masomeen asws, but in one of the traditions, Imam Sadiq asws has just quoted a Verse from Quran Majeed on the reward of Ziyarah of Imam Hussain asws, where Allah azwj Says: If you count the bounties of Allah azwj, you will not be able to number them' (16:18). Imam asws said: Very good, O Bashir! Verily Allah azwj will Register twenty purified and accepted Hajj, twenty purified and accepted Umrah, and the reward of (fighting in) twenty battles with one of Allah azwj 's Messengers asws or with a Just Imam asws for any believer who goes to (the Ziyarah of) the grave of Hussain asws knowing his asws rights on any day other than an Eid. Allah azwj will register one hundred Hajj and 'Umrah and the reward of (fighting in) one hundred battles with one of Allah azwj 's Messengers asws or with a Just Imam asws for anyone who goes to him asws (Imam Hussain asws ) on any Eid day. Allah azwj will register one thousand accepted Hajj and 'Umrah and the reward of (fighting in) one thousand battles with one of Allah azwj s Messengers asws or with a Just Imam asws for anyone who goes to him asws (Imam Hussain asws ) on the Day of 'Arafah knowing his rights. I said, But how can I be anywhere better than 'Arafat on the day ' 'Arafah? 3 out of 31

4 Imam asws looked at me angrily and said, O Bashir! When a believer goes to the Ziyarah of the grave of Hussain asws on the Day of 'Arafah after performing Ghusl with the water of the Euphrates (River), Allah azwj will register on (complete) Hajj with all of its rituals for him with every step that he takes. I asked, Even before looking at the people who are in 'Arafat? Imam asws replied, Yes. I asked, Why is that? 6 this life and the Hereafter for those who go to the Ziyarah of Hussain asws on the night of the fifteenth of Sha'ban, on the night of Fitr, and on the night of 'Arafah all in the same year. 8 ح د ث ن ي م ح م د ب ن ال ح س ن ب ن ال و ل يد ع ن م ح م د ب ن ال ح س ن الص ف ار ع ن ا ح م د ب ن م ح م د ب ن ع يس ى ع ن م ح م د ب ن خ ال د ال ب ر ق ي ع ن ح ن ان ب ن س د ير ع ن ا ب يه ع ن ا ب ي ع ب د الل ه ع ق ال ف قا ل له م ع ا لح س ي ن ال ل ه ع ب د قب ر ا بي ز و ا ر ع لى ت ع ا لى ال ل ه ا ط ل ع ع ر ف ة ي و م كا ن ا ذا اس ت ا ن فوا ف قد غ فر ت ل ك م ث م ي ج ع ل ا قام ت ه ع لى ا ه ل ع ر فا ت Muhammad ibn Hasan (ibn Ahmad) ibn Walid narrated to me from Muhammad ibn Hasan Al-Saffar, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn 'Isa, from Muhammad ibn Khalid Al-Barki, from Hanan ibn Sadir, from his father, who said: Abu 'Abd Allah (Imam Sadiq asws ) said: On the Day of 'Arafah, Allah azwj, Looks, toward the Zuwwar of the grave of Abi 'Abd Allah AI-Hussain asws and Says, Continue with (good) deeds for I have forgiven you. 7 Muhammad ibn Sinan, from Bashir Al-Dahhan, who said: I heard Aba 'Abd Allah (Imam Sadiq asws ) speaking in Hirah to a group of Shia surrounding him. He asws turned his face toward me and asked, O Bashir! Did you go for Hajj last year? I replied, May I sacrifice myself for you asws! No, but instead I spent the Day of 'Arafah next to the grave - referring to the grave of Hussain asws. He asws said, O Bashir! I say it by Allah asws that you did not miss anything (from the blessings) that were in Makkah for those who were there. I said: May I sacrifice myself for you asws! Explain this to me, for (the blessings being in) 'Arafat is (only available) in Makkah. 11 Imam asws replied: O Bashir! Verily every time one of you raises his foot or places it down walking toward the grave of Hussain asws while knowing his rights, after performing Ghusl on the shores of the Euphrates (River), Allah azwj will Give you the reward of one hundred accepted Hajj and one hundred purified Umrah and (the reward of) fighting in one hundred battles with one of Allah azwj s Messengers asws against His azwj enemies and the enemies of His azwj Messengers asws. O Bashir! 8 And the angels will add the title Truthful to his name and will say, Allah azwj Has Purified him from the top of His azwj Throne. Beware that I said this would suffice as performing Hajjatul Islam only for an insolvent person. 9 the grave of Hussain asws on the Day of 'Arafah, this will be sufficient as having performed that (additional) Hajj or 'Umrnh and Allah azwj will multiply the rewards of this act greatly for him. I asked, How many Hajj and how many 'Umrah will be registered for him? Imam asws ' 1! replied, It cannot be counted. I asked, (Is it) one hundred? Imam asws replied, And who can count it?! I asked, One thousand? Imam asws replied, And more. Then the Imam asws added: If you count the bounties of Allah azwj, you will not be able to number them' (16:18). They have undertaken the responsibility for four of these obligations but they have ignored one. The narrator has said: I asked the Imam asws, May Allah azwj keeps my soul in service for your cause, will you please, describe them for me? The Imam asws said: The Prayer is one of such obligations. People did not know how to perform the Prayer. Jibril as descended and said: O Muhammad saww explain to them the timing for the Prayer. Then the Command to pay Zakaat came. Jibril as then said: O Muhammad saww explain to them how to pay Zakaat as you saww have explained to them about the Prayer. Then the Command to fast came. The Messenger of Allah saww would send information to the nearby towns and would ask people to fast on the day of Ashura 17 and people would fast on that day. Then the (Command to Fast during the) month of Ramadan came between the month of Sha'ban and Shawwal. Thereafter, came the Command for Hajj. Jibril as descended and said to the Holy Prophet: Explain to them the rules of Hajj as you saww have explained to them about the Prayer, Zakat and Fasting. Allah azwj Completed the Religion Islam on the Day of Arafa: Thereafter came the Command in the verse about the people who possess Divine Authority. It came to him saww on Friday, the Day of Arafa on the ninth of the month of Dhu al-hajja. Allah azwj sent the following verse of the Holy Quran: '... 11 perfected your religion, completed My favors to you, and chosen Islam as your religion... ' (5:3) The perfection of religion came about with the declaration of the fact that Ali asws ibn abu Talib possessed Divine Authority over the people. The Messenger of Allah saww then said at that time: My followers have lived very close to the age of darkness and ignorance. When I speak of the Divine Authority of my cousin, one says this and one says that. I saww say this to myself saww in my soul without speaking it out with my tongue. Then the decisive Command of Allah azwj came in which He azwj had warned me of punishment for not preaching to people about the Divine Authority (of Ali asws ). And then the following verse of the Holy Quran was sent: O Messenger, preach what is revealed to you from your Lord. If you do not preach, it will be as though you have not conveyed My message. Allah protects you from men. He does not guide the unbelieving people.' (5:67). The Messenger of Allah saww then holding the hand of Ali asws raised it up high and said: O people, there had lived no prophet as before me saww whom Allah azwj would not cause to become old. After such age Allah azwj would call them to die. I saww may be called to die any time very soon but would remain responsible as well as you. What then would you say? They replied: We will testify and say that you saww preached, gave good advice and fulfilled your saww responsibilities. May Allah azwj Grant you saww the best of the rewards that He azwj has Granted to the messengers as. He (the Holy Prophet saww ) then said: 0 Lord, bear testimony.' He saww said so three times. Then he saww said: O the community of the Muslims! this is the person asws who possesses Divine Authority over you after me saww. Those of you present here must inform about this declaration to those who are absent from here. Abu Jafar asws has said: I swear by Allah azwj, that AIi asws was the Guardian of the trust of Allah azwj in His creatures, the Guardian of His azwj Secrets and religion which He azwj has chosen for Himself azwj. Then the Holy Prophet saww experienced what is to be experienced and called Ali asws near and said: O Ali asws, I saww want to appoint and entrust you asws with that which Allah azwj has Entrusted me saww of His azwj secrets, His azwj knowledge, His azwj creatures and His azwj religion which He azwj has chosen for Himself azwj. The Imam asws then said: O Ziyad! I swear by Allah azwj that no one besides Ali asws had any share in it (appointed as Divine Authority over the people). Ali asws, thereafter experienced what was to be experienced (the time of his leaving this world). He asws then called his children who numbered twelve sons. He said to them: My children, Allah azwj has Decided to place in me asws the noble tradition that He azwj had placed in Jacob as (Ya'qub). Jacob as called all of his children who numbered twelve sons and he as informed them about (the status of) their companion (brother, Joseph as ). Please note that I asws also want to inform you about your companion. These two, ai-hassan asws and al-hussain asws are the children of the Messenger of Allah saww. You must listen to them asws, obey and support them asws. I have entrusted them asws with that which the Messenger of Allah saww had entrusted me asws in the matters of the creatures of Allah azwj, His azwj secrets and His azwj religion, which He azwj has chosen for Himself azwj. Allah azwj has Made of the responsibility of Ali asws toward them asws just like the responsibility of the Messenger of Allah saww toward Ali asws. All of their asws virtuous perfection is equal except the elderliness in age. AI-Hussain asws 11 out of 31

12 would never raise his voice in a meeting in the presence of ai-hassan asws before he would leave the place. Al-Hassan asws then experienced (the coming of the time of his death) what is to be experienced. He delivered and submitted it (the Divine trust) all to al-hussain asws. When the time of the death of al-hussain asws came he asws called his eldest daughter, Fatimah asws, and gave to her a sealed document and his publicly declared will. Ali ibn al- Hussain asws was ill with internal illness and they thought he was about to die. Fatimah asws gave the document to Ali ibn al-hussain asws and thereafter, I swear by Allah azwj that document came to us. AI-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu'alla ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Jumhur from Muhammad ibn lsmail ibn Bazi' from Mansur ibn Yunus from abu al-jarud from abu Jafar asws a similar Hadith. 18 The Reward for the Ziyarah of Hussain asws on the Day of 'Ashura: ح د ث ن ي ا ب ي و ا خ ي و ج م اع ة م ش اي خ ي ع ن م ح م د ب ن ي ح ي ى ع ن م ح م د ب ن ع ل ي ال م د اي ن ي ق ال ا خ ب ر ن ي م ح م د ب ن س ع يد ال ب ج ل ي ع ن ق ب يص ة ع ن ج اب ر ال ج ع ف ي ق ال ع اش ور ا ء ي و م ف ي م حم د ع ب ن ج ع ف ر ع لى ت د خ ل ع لى ح ق و ال ل ه ز و ا ر ه و لا ء ل ي ف قا ل ا لم ز و ر ا ن ي ك ر م لي ل ة ع ا لح س ي ن قب ر ع ن د ب ا ت م ن الز اي ر ع اش ور ا ء ا لق ي ام ة ي و م بد م ه م ل طخ ا ال ل ه لق ي ع ر ص ت ه ف ي مع ه قت ل ك ا ن م ا [ع ص ره ]و ز ا ر قا ل م ن قب ر ا لح س ي ن ع ا ي ي و م ع اش ور ا ء و[ ا و ]ب ات ع ن د ه كا ن كم ن اس ت ش ه د ب ي ن ي د ي ه My father, my brother and all of my scholars narrated to me from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Muhammad ibn 'Ali Al-MadEnni, from Muhammad ibn Sa'eed Al-Bajali, from Qabisah, from Jabir Al-Ju'fi, who said: I went to Ja'far ibn Muhammad (Imam Sadiq asws ) on the Day of Ashura and he asws said to me (as part of a longer Hadith): These (referring to the Zuwwar of Hussain asws ) are the Zuwwar 19 of Allah azwj and it is an obligation on the host to honour the Zair. Those who spend the night of 'Ashura next to the grave of Hussain asws will meet Allah azwj on the Day of Judgment stained with their blood as if they were killed with him on the desert (Karbala). 14 Allah azwj will register the reward of one thousand accepted Hajj and one thousand purified 'Umrah for those who go to the Ziyarah of Hussain asws on the Day of 'Arafah. In addition, the reward for each one of these Hajj, 'Umrah, and battles will be equivalent to the reward of those who have gone to Hajj and 'Umrah and have fought with the Messenger asws of Allah azwj and the Righteous Imams asws I asked, May I sacrifice myself for you asws! What about those who, are in distant lands and far countries and cannot travel to him asws on that day? Imam asws replied: On the Day of 'Ashura, in the middle of the day and before noon, they should go to a desert or to an elevated part of their house and direct their Salam to Hussain asws by pointing toward him asws, curse his asws killers increasingly, and establish two Rak'ah of prayers. Then they should mourn and cry over Hussain asws, order everyone in their house to cry over him asws, hold (a gathering) in their house (in which) Hussain asws 's tragedies (are mentioned) and become restless over (the tragedies of) Hussain asws, and meet one another in their houses while crying and consoling one another over the tragedy of Hussain asws. 16 out of 31

17 Verily if they do this, I guarantee that Allah azwj, the Great and Almighty, will Register all of those rewards (mentioned for going to his Ziyarah on the Day of 'Ashura) for them. I asked, May I sacrifice myself for you asws! Will you asws guarantee and promise these rewards for those who do this? Imam asws replied: I asws guarantee and promise these rewards for those who do this. I asked: How should they console one another? Imam asws replied: They should say: ع ظم ال له أ ج ور ن ا ب م ص اب ن ا ب ال ح س ي ن ع و ج ع ل ن ا و إ ياآ م م ن ال طال ب ين ب ث ا ر ه م ع و ل يه ال ا م ام ال م ه د ي م ن ا ل م ح مد ص May Allah azwj increase our rewards for being grieved over the tragedy of Hussain asws and may Allah azwj make us and you among those who seek to avenge them la with his asws heir ajfj27, the Rightly Guided Imam ajfj, from the family of Mohammed saww. Imam asws added: If possible, do not attempt to fulfil your needs on this day, for verily it is an ominous day when needs are not fulfilled. And even if they are fulfilled, one will not be blessed with them nor will he find any success in them. Do not buy or take anything to your house on this day. Verily those who they take to their houses do will not find any blessings in that nor will they be blessed with their families. Allah azwj will register the reward of one million Hajj, one million 'Umrah, and one million battles (in the way of Allah azwj ) for those who follow these (instructions), and all of this will be registered as if it was done with the Messenger of Allah azwj. They will also earn the reward of (being afflicted by) the tragedies of all of the prophets asws, Messengers asws, truthful ones as, and the martyrs who died (naturally) or were killed since the day Allah azwj Created this world until the rising of the Hour. Salih ibn 'Uqbah Al-Juhani and Sayf ibn 'Amirah narrated that 'Alqamah ibn Muhammad Al-Hadrami, added 28 : I said to Abi Ja'far (Imam Baqir asws ), Teach me an invocation that I can recite on that day if I perform his asws Ziyarah from near (his grave) and an invocation that I can recite if I cannot perform his asws Ziyarah from near (his grave) and have to direct my Salam to him by pointing toward him from distant lands on the roof of my house. 27 Imam-e-Zaman asws, the 12 th Imam ajfj 28 Through another chain of narrators, 17 out of 31

18 Imam asws replied: O 'Alqamah! 29 If you establish two Rak'ah of prayers after directing your Salam to him asws by pointing toward him asws and then recite the following Invocation while directing your Salam to him asws, then you have invoked Allah azwj with that with which the angels invoke Him azwj, when they perform the Ziyarah of Hussain asws and Allah azwj will Register one million good deeds for you, erase one million bad deeds for you, and add one hundred million ranks to your rank. You will be considered among those who were martyred with Hussain asws ibn Ali asws and you will be considered among their asws companions. You will not be known for except being among the martyrs who were martyred with him asws and the reward of every Prophet asws, every Messenger asws, and every person who has gone to the Ziyarah of Hussain asws ibn Ali asws since the day he asws was killed will registered for you. (You should recite the following): ي ا ع لي ك الس لا م خ ي ر ت ه اب ن و ال ل ه خ ي ر ة ع لي ك ي ا الس لا م ال ل ه ر س و ل اب ن ي ا ع لي ك الس لا م ال ل ه ع ب د ي ا ا ب ا ع لي ك الس لام اب ن ا م ير ا لم و م ن ين و اب ن س ي د ا لو ص ي ين الس لا م ع لي ك ي ا اب ن فاط م ة س ي د ة نس ا ء ا لع ا لم ين Salam to you, O Aba 'Abd Allah asws. Salam to you, O son of the Messenger of Allah saww. Salam to you asws, O Choice of Allah azwj and the son of His azwj Choice. Salam to you asws, O son of the Commander of the Believers asws and the son of the Master of the Successors asws. Salam to you asws, O son of Fatimah asws, the Master of the Women of the Worlds. الس لام ع لي ك ي ا ثا ر ال ل ه و اب ن ثا ر ه ا لم و ت و ر و ا ل وت ر Salam to you, O the one whose avenger is Allah azwj and O son of the one asws whose avenger is Allah azwj.
