1 News from around the club: Membership Meeting This Sunday, October 5th at 4:00 PM with carry in meal to follow. Chili or soup and Pumpkin desert contest! As part of your 2 items to share for the carry in dinner after the membership meeting, you may submit one item that is either a chili or a soup or a pumpkin desert to be judged. Please have the items to be judged in the kitchen by 3:00 PM. Friday evening, October 5th folks will be gathering by 5:00 PM in the parking lot and carpooling to the Minster Oktoberfest. All boats are to be out of the water and off SMBC property by November 3rd. The club will be shut down and winterized soon after and there will be no water or toilet facilities available. Wind and Waves EXTRA!! EXTRA!! The lake level is STILL the highest it has been this late in the season for several years. Approximately 3 flowing over top of the spillway! Awesome fall sailing continues! Only a few more good days left to get that last sail in! Don t waste any of them. Warning!! Some people may find some photos on page 7 disturbing! 2 Notes from the General Membership Meeting Note: These are just my notes, not a comprehensive set of minutes. - The Editor September 1, 2014 meeting, Gary Brown called to order at 4:00 PM. Marathon scheduled for September 27 will cause the street in front of SMBC to be closed from approximately 7:00 am to 10 am. SMBC and Visitors Bureau will jointly run an aid station in front of SMBC. Pedestrian signs are up in front of SMBC, and have been moved farther apart to better protect folks crossing the street. Furniture in TV area is a NO EATING/DRINKING area. Sink holes still forming in stone around walkways, recommend filling with Sackcrete. Contractor may not fix damaged seawall until after the end of the season. Jim Hepp has decals with SMBC logo for sale. Jane Davis has club Burgees for sale for $25.00 The numbers used to identify your location in case of an emergency have been added to our mailbox post. Jane Davis has ask to step down from being social chairman next year. Jane has had the job for many years and we thank her for all of her service to the club. What appears to be rough sawn lumber is driven into the bottom using a sledge hammer. The second man from the left is Phil Cornett and the third man from left, holding the sledge hammer is Larry Aufderhaar. Note the lack of trees on the island in front of SMBC channel. 4 September 20th Weekend with Fish Fry on Saturday Night Strong winds were predicted during the skipper s meeting before the morning race. The first race went fast in good wind but not excessive. By the time we crossed the finish line for the second race we were having trouble holding it together and we needed to luff the main to keep from rounding up. Above photo is of Steve Badders and his son in law on their Catalina 22 just after they crossed the finish line. Apologies to Gary Brown whom I crewed for during the race that I did not take a photo of him because I was too busy holding on! After lunch several boats went out sailing. Brad Barton took his family, Jan Adams went out with Don Hibbard and Don s sister. I went out with Jim Hepp, Steve Badders, Richard Siebenthaller and Anita Eeberhart on my boat. Anita was a very good sport, enduring her first time healed past 40 degrees with good humor. The winds clocked up over 17 knots at times. We had two reefs in the main and could have used three! 5 September 20th Weekend with Fish Fry on Saturday Night After the invigorating sail we returned to the club house for the great fish fry dinner. Those not sailing or cooking were treated to a wonderful afternoon on the patio with perfect temperature and a strong breeze to keep the bugs away. Photo at left of Loren Schafer watching Gary Maitlen fry fish. The Maitlen s and Hohman s provided the fish and the band which entertained afterwards. The fish and the sides made a wonderful supper. The two piece band entertained us with classics of rock and country from the 60 s-80 s, that we all knew the words by heart! Some times I had to sing along, I could not stop myself! 6 September 20th Weekend with Fish Fry on Saturday Night Sunday afternoon, Jay and Ruth Schaefer invited me to join them along with Bill and Ty Baumann to go sailing. The wind was still blowing strong sometimes with gusts over 20 mph. With a couple of reefs in the main and a small jib we set off for a great sail. I don t know if the above photos will show the water on the dodger window but it kept Bills head dry. The girls out front got soaked! I was at the very stern and so I took a few splashes. 7 Grand Lake Marathon Aid Station at SMBC SMBC operated an aid station for the 1st ever Grand Lake Marathon in the parking lot across the street from the club. This was a joint effort between SMBC and the Visitors Bureau down the street. The day was perfect and everyone seemed to have a good time, passing out water, energy drink and protein supplements to the runners. Each aid station had a theme and ours was Hawaiian. Folks got dressed up and into the moment. At first I thought the mascot was a chicken but I have been told it is supposed to be a seagull.
