Commodore s Message Members of our Club were shocked by the sudden tragic death of former Commodore and Honorary Life Member Frank Astbury last month. Frank played a major part in the creation and preservation of our harbour. He designed and helped to build the docks and oversaw the engineering that kept our breakwater in place. He was regularly seen on the docks checking that everything was in order. The Club was grateful for the opportunity to host a Gathering of his friends and Club members on June 3rd. While Frank will be missed, he will not be forgotten. As we start the 2016 sailing season, our first thoughts must go to safety. The first safety issue relates to Club members leaving on the dock things that can cause a fall. This includes dinghies, electrical cables, fishing tackle, crab traps, and water hoses. I would like to remind members that dinghies or kayaks are not allowed to be kept either on the docks or in the water. Could you please check the space around your boat for hazards? Otherwise we call in the dock police! The second safety issue is that of safety ladders. I personally went swimming last weekend and checked out all the ladders. There was discussion about replacing the ladders, but I can assure you that they all work. Having said that, may I suggest that you check out where the closest ladder is to your boat. I have had two recent experiences around this issue. Rosie fell in at Silva Bay where they have no ladders and without assistance which included a swim grid with ladder it would have been difficult for her to get out. Secondly, last weekend a man fell in near our boat in Snug Cove. Even though he was at the stern of his boat that had a swim grid, he could not get out. Fortunately a particularly athletic young woman was able to pull him onto the swim grid. It made me realize that swim grids don t work unless there is a ladder in the water. Sailpast was a terrific success not only because it was a beautiful sunny day, but also because we had a light breeze. It certainly made for some great photos. We do have about 600 photographs of members boats. If you would like to view them, please contact Nancy. We had an excellent turnout of boats as well as members and their families. We are sad to see that Bev Dicks and Andrew Crane are moving to Victoria. Bev has been promoted to a senior provincial government position. We wish them well in Victoria even if they do join the Royal Victoria Yacht Club! Andrew has not only served as Commodore, but has been a stalwart of our Club for many years, most recently as head of the Technical Committee. He has recently overseen the addition of the new Junior Floats. Both he and Bev have been very active in the social events. More on this in the social report. We will miss them both but they will be staying on as members. As we have mentioned before, our Club like other clubs is going through a transition with senior members leaving and not yet being replaced by younger members. In fact this month at least for a period we had two potential vacant moorings available. Our Membership Secretary, Dave Wilson, has been extremely active as a recruiter and it looks like we already have two or three new active members with boats. However, we appreciate that we must encourage the younger generation who are more likely to have an eco-boat such as a kayak. For this reason we started an initiative to see how to best store kayaks. Dave Wilson has done a fantastic job on this, and his description of the results can be read later in Soundings. Yacht clubs have a reputation for being rather cliquey. Can I ask all members to remember that we describe ourselves as the friendliest little yacht club. So please this summer make an extra effort to be courteous and welcoming to fellow members and especially new members. Happy and safe boating. Tim Lepard Pegasus VI 3

A Tribute to Frank Astbury A Celebration of Life was hosted by EHYC on Friday, June 3, David Horton was MC for the occasion. Wow what a tribute; what a turnout and this is just those of you that got into the parking lot. Those that didn t are still making their way here! Good afternoon everyone. I m David Horton; I m a long-time member of EHYC and I m a friend of Frank Astbury just as you all are. On behalf of Frank s family, welcome and thank you all for being here, particularly those of you that have travelled some distance to join us. It means a lot to the family. What can I tell you about Frank? Probably not much that you don t already know. But some things are worth repeating, and sharing those thoughts and recollections with others is what this gathering is all about. In a moment, I m going to identify a list of speakers who are going to do just that: share their thoughts and recollections with you. Frank was an accomplished man who had many friends and a large and loving family. These are things that most of us aspire to in one form or another. Frank had them all in spades. I m not qualified to tell you of his success as a professional engineer, or as a businessman with his own engineering company. Others will shortly tell you of his HUGE, HUGE contribution to EHYC. Those not of EHYC will speak of his loyalty and commitment to a relationship that thrived on him just being his own genuine self. Now, to those particularly close to Frank and his wife Donna the Speakers. Firstly, one of his two beloved daughters, Pam, who is a professional engineer, just like her Dad. Next up will be Ron Defieux, an ex-ehyc Commodore, good friend, Spartan skipper and racing rival of Frank s. Another ex-commodore, Sven Stokke, will speak next. This is the man that Frank claimed was the first person to befriend and welcome him to the Club as they stood alongside the bar in the old Clubhouse. Then I will introduce Bill Allen, a professional engineer and best man at Frank and Donna s wedding. He might recall parts of his Best Man s speech for us. Ex-Commodore Burke Corbett is an Honorary Life Member at EHYC, as was Frank. He will no doubt tell us about some of the distant destinations up the coast to which he and his wife Hanneke sailed together with Frank and Donna. The four of them were long-time cruising companions. Reg Davis is a special and long-time family friend. He was at university and graduated with Frank. He might not divulge the details of student engineering pranks, but he will certainly remember and regale us. Bernie Hanby is a fisherman, diver, airborne frogman, photographer and author. He is also an EHYC Honorary Life Member, and ex-commodore. He is a really long-time EHYC member who shared so much with Frank. Finally, Frank s other beloved daughter, Alison, will speak. She now lives in Australia, as does her brother Graham. They have many treasured memories of their Dad while growing up in BC. Alison will share their favourites with us. Frank Astbury (far right) with friends at Sailpast. 4

The afternoon concluded with the following tribute from EHYC Club member, Chester Spink: Eight Bells the end of a watch Frank was an engineer, in the most qualified manner, Who could both design great structures, and wield a spanner. At our Club we can see examples of this, around the clock, A fine one being our number six dock. Frank never owned a Maserati or a Harley But drove with passion his Champagne Charlie. He could race, and win, most things that float While stating with pride, She is a working man s boat. I, like many, a recipient of his help and skill When my old boat Tamasha became quite ill. Painstakingly, he continued to work to get things right Even though he was going out to dinner that very same night. Only last month, Frank worked on improving his craft By adding new instruments way back aft. He had made the plan, as real engineers do, After handily repairing his engine with a special glue. Very recently, Frank showed me his birthplace in Port Kells. Now, so suddenly and most sadly, we must ring for him Eight Bells. He has finished his watch and has taken his leave From his family and friends who are left here to grieve. I can t really believe Frank s not with us anymore; Perhaps he s off sailing to a distant shore. I know, however, when thoughts of him are brought to mind The words that are formed will be very kind. 5

VICE COMMODORE S REPORT Safety Day was held on April 30, and was well attended. The usual activities were conducted fire extinguisher maintenance, sale of safety gear, vessel washing, and of course the patented smokies for lunch. In addition, we had a visit by the Vancouver Police marine contingent, delivering a very informative talk + Q and A. They will bring their newest vessel next year. The AED demo enjoyed good support, and a decision was made to host a more comprehensive course one evening in June. Derwyn Lea Barcarolle Replacement of fire extinguishers was top of mind for most Club members. Do you have all the necessary safety equipment? This was the time to find out. The inspector prepares to board Enrique Argente s boat. Marine supplies were available for purchase. 6

A stalwart team of Junior members was available to scrub and clean members boats on request. Members were fascinated by a demonstration of how to use the Club s Automated External Defibrillator. Members of the Vancouver Police Marine unit gave an interesting talk and invited EHYC members to visit their handsome new boat. 7

As an interesting addendum to Safety Day, two Club boats offered an inadvertent demonstration of how to react to difficult challenges. The engine on Pasa Tiempo, Liz and Ingo Klose s boat, died just as they were setting off into Howe Sound. They needed to return to the dock to effect repairs, but how does one do that with no engine? They impressed Club members by sailing into their berth! Shortly afterwards, Andrew Crane and Bev Dicks set off on their boat, Moonshadow III, but didn t get past Eagle Island before they fouled a submerged crab trap and the engine stopped dead. How to free up their propeller? Fellow Club member Murray Klassen offered a tow and the rope floated free. What would we do without our friends! Liz Klose sails Pasa Tiempo into her berth. Andrew checks is the propeller free? A tow for Moonshadow III gets rid of the unwanted appendage. 8

FLEET CAPTAIN S REPORT I didn t know Frank Atsbury as well as I would have liked. We met a couple of times during the ubiquitous Saturday morning work parties during the first year after Lori and I joined the Club. It was easy to develop a quick respect for Frank s knowledge and wisdom about all things to do with yachting. I always left a conversation feeling more informed and enriched through his input. We really had a good chance to chat and explore our past experiences during our first Supercruise a couple of years ago. A few of us went for a long walk on Pender Island, and it was during that walk I discovered that our paths had crossed very briefly many years ago when I crewed for my Dad on his Lightning class sailboat in English Bay. Frank also had a Lightning about that time and was quite involved in Fleet 90! I think my Dad moved on to Thunderbirds about the time Frank was getting his Lightning really moving, so we didn t have many racing stories to exchange. Most recently, Frank s eye for detail and his depth of experience was shared again as he offered very informed opinions about the engineering of the anchor points on the barge breakwater. He will be missed by all of us. Frank was also one of the regular participants in the RNSA/ FCYC Single-Handed Race every June. In a very interesting and respectful tribute to Frank, the race organizers presented one skipper from each of the four divisions with an inscribed silver winch handle in Frank s memory. A very thoughtful gesture to a long-time competitor! This year s RNSA/FCYC Single-Handed Race was held on the June 4th-5th weekend. Ken Kufta in Elysium was the only EHYC member who participated this year, finishing in 6th place in Division 2. Twenty-six yachts competed this year, although from the results I saw it appears several did not compete in the return leg on Sunday. The annual BIYC Round Bowen Race took place on June 11th, right at press time. Unfortunately, I could not compete this year, and I haven t spoken with any participants. The results and finish times suggest to me there must have been some sort of equalizing lack of wind at some point because the finish times of most participating yachts seem to be within +/- 30 minutes around 4:30 pm. The corrected time winner was Dan Klinksgaard from DCYC in Haida26. Dan was also a single-handed competitor in the aforementioned RNSA/ FCYC Single-Handed race the weekend before! EHYC participants were: 41st Bruce Winfield in Nunnehi; 76th Dave Wilson in Merlin; 94th Katy Campbell in Paragon. The race was well-attended this year once again with 118 registered yachts hitting the 10:00am start line in unison (well, maybe not in complete unison, but that s the theory of the thing)! The WVYC Wednesday Evening series began April 27th. For the five races that comprise Series 1, Dave Wilson and crew on Merlin finished 2nd in a very competitive six-yacht Division 2. Bruce Winfield and crew on Nunnehi are very much in the hunt again this year with a 3rd place finish in Division 3, edging out WVYC s Meltemi by a single point! On to Series 2 now. Very good to see Katy Campbell and her crew on Paragon out last Wednesday representing another EHYC racing entry! Stay tuned for a date for the EHYC single- and double-handed races. We are looking for a date in mid- to late-july for the single-hander. We will send out a special notice. It may feature your Fleet Captain setting the marks with his new... cough, cough wait for it power boat!!! Yes, Lori and I have crossed the floor and I will be fulfilling the Fleet Captain duties henceforth from our new (to us) Bayliner 2655! Good Sailing! Kent Brownlow (Mulling over the name for our new boat - looking on the web now for the equivalent book of baby names for boats!) Frank Astbury s long-time participation in the RNSA/FCYC Single-Handed Race was recognized by race organizers in June. 9

Floating Kayak Dock Building on the success and popularity of the Paddleboard Rack, our Great Club has decided to proceed with the construction of its first ever Floating Kayak Dock. And this is a first, maybe anywhere! Over the years this idea has been discussed, debated, supported, dropped, and then discussed again and this time it s a go! Having this facility for our Club will round out our offerings to the boating community around us by providing an opportunity for new boaters to get acquainted with the world of water in a slightly different way and then they can buy a boat! For our existing boaters, kayaking represents a terrific sideline to an already cherished activity. The purpose-built dock will be located just at the bottom of the main ramp attached to dock #1 and will accommodate about 15 kayaks, surf-skis, or other such floating craft. Project completion should allow for use this summer. The Club is aiming to satisfy both new and existing members with a fair allocation of space. Annual pre-paid contracts at a cost of $250/yr will be available soon! Many thanks to all those members who have contributed their time and great ideas towards this becoming a reality! 11 SOCIAL EVENTS Sailpast was a terrific success, with probably close to 200 people coming to the Clubhouse for a lunch and get together. Over the last few years Cindy Cutts has been quietly arranging this event with her team of volunteers. Unfortunately this will be the last year she will be doing this. Our thanks to Cindy for having done a fantastic job. Although we have stopped doing weddings for nonmembers, we do continue to encourage members and their immediate family to host events at our Clubhouse. Recently, the Clubhouse was the venue for the wedding of one of our member s daughters. The event went extremely well. We hope to see more members enjoying our facilities for such special family events. The annual Lobster Boil took place on June 13 and was a sold-out affair. Although the lobsters are no more for this year, we all have happy memories of this great tradition in our Club. Thanks have to go to Bev Dicks and Andrew Crane who have put this event on over the last 11 years. As noted in the Commodore s Report, Bev and Andrew are moving to Victoria, but they have promised to continue as members of our Club and to put on the annual Lobster Boil. Bev in particular has been very active on the social scene and is always there to help and advise. We will all miss them. This summer we are planning to hold regular Friday night barbecues, which will be casual affairs. Mostly they will be on the basis of bring your own food and of course no charge. We will have some events that we will charge for if we have to hire a musician or if we provide food. The charge will be kept to a minimum to just cover our costs. We are asking that people register through Eventbrite. However if you haven t registered, don t let this put you off attending. The reason for Eventbrite is that we need to know how many people are coming to ensure that the bar is stocked and we have a server. Also it is nice for members to know if there will be other people attending. We are also in the process of planning a rather special dinner, which will likely be between August This dinner will be a full Italian meal with Italian wines. But the main feature is going to be the waiter! He happens to be one of Canada s up-and-coming opera singers and he will entertain us and perhaps help with the serving. More on this once we have settled a date with him. Sailpast 2016 Sailpast dawned bright and sunny. Members gathered early to enjoy the flags, the sunshine, and the camaraderie. 11

At noon, it was time to head out and the Commodore led the way. Though none of us knew it at the time, it was to be Champagne Charlie s last Sailpast. New member Katy Campbell had rounded up her whole family to accompany her on Paragon for her very first Sailpast. Then it was back to the Clubhouse for lunch and chat. 12

Commodore Tim Lepard with granddaughter Phoebe a future Commodore? When her water bottle was dropped over the railing, our dauntless Commodore sprang to the rescue on his paddleboard. Lobster Boil Lobsters, lobsters everywhere! Lobster wranglers, David Rahn and Anthea Cameron, wrestled over 100 lobsters into the pots. 13

Bev chatted to her most eager customers. At last dinner was served. Let the feasting begin. Oh my, it tastes good! 14

STAFF CAPTAIN S REPORT The Victoria Day weekend cruise was held this year in Silva Bay, Gabriola, with most boats mooring at our chosen base, Page s Resort and Marina. The location proved to be very popular, with an easy transit and accommodating weather. Our hosts, the Hatfields, were always ready to take a line and all those who committed in time had moorage on what proved to be a very busy weekend for the harbor. The resort boasts a number of cabins and a generous grass area for games, or, in our case, eating and drinking. Many arrived on Friday night and began the exercise of dock wandering, testing out the quality of beverages and hors d oeuvres at each vessel for reference over the next two evenings. Those boats whose hospitality peaked early ran the risk of outages, with no obvious source of replenishment at hand. To be fair, only a volunteer bus ride away, we were treated to the first Saturday morning market of the year. Slightly too early for food shopping, jewelry and clothing seemed to be popular with one segment of the group. On everybody s mind this weekend was Frank Astbury s tragic accident. Games were not the order of the day, but rather thoughts of making the most of every moment and caring for those around you. On both the Saturday and Sunday, walks took place to Drumbeg Park to watch the wildlife and the flow of the tide through Gabriola Passage. Significant time was dedicated to sustenance. Friday night was self catered; Saturday night we all showed off our talents at the BBQ accompanied by salads and veggies, and of course those yummy desserts, and on Sunday evening we dined in the Silva Bay pub. Of special mention, the Sunday breakfast was superb. Going above and beyond, Tim and Rosie had taken a car over to ensure that all necessaries were on hand and the choice, cooking and presentation were first class. Your Commodore is diligent, going to the extent of testing his wife s life jacket. Thank you to the 30+ members who joined in the fun, with special mention of Ken and Karin Fraser and Jeff and Sylvia Motley who we don t see enough of these days. Mike and Sonia Cheevers Pescador A group set out for a morning walk. When they arrived at the beach. they met one of the locals. Supercruise is famous for its social hours. 15

On Saturday night, we shared a casual dinner on the marina s spacious lawn. Bev had a happy reunion with now-non-resident member, Sylvia Motley. On Sunday morning, preparations for the Commodore s breakfast started early and by the time everyone arrived, the feast was impressive and hugely enjoyed. On Sunday night, everyone enjoyed dinner at the Sliva Bay Marina pub. 16
