2 Page 2 Club News and Updates Newsletter Title First Taster Sails a Success more Tasters to Come The first taster sails of the season took place on Saturday 11 th March. The weather was warm for the time of year with just a gentle breeze, enough to ensure that everyone had the chance of a great taster sail. 12 people had a go at dinghy sailing, we received positive feedback from all tasters, some became new members, whilst others showed a keen interest in learning to sail and wanted to join once they had moved to the area. Oliver aged 12 years said The sail was great fun can I have another go! Anna was delighted to take him out again on the water. Many thanks to everyone who took part, as well as the volunteers, who helped to make the day so successful and enjoyable. There was a great atmosphere and lots of interest shown in the club including a visit from Buckswood School who are interested in getting students sailing at RHSC. Without the help of volunteers the club wouldn t be able to hold these events to encourage new membership uptake. We made 120 for the RHSC Refurbishment Project, 65 of which were donations from the taster sails and we have some food in the freezer already for the next taster session on Saturday 15 April. Grateful thanks go to the volunteers who took part in making the Taster Sail Day such a success - from those giving the taster sails to the galley crew listed below. Bill Lewis Simon Marsh John and Claire Powell Jeremy and Alison Short Mark Mills Ailish Cantwell Jones and daughter Katie with friend Hanna Chris Baker Rhett Baker Jan Weston Andrew and Glenda Wilson Frances Culver Apologies if I have inadvertently left anyone out. Caroline Wylson Sue Saich Sarah Nelson Carol Arnold Ted Goodsell Mark Whiteman Richard Hopper Hugh Redman Carey Marsh Andrew Hewitt Anna Knight David Townsley
3 Page 3 Taster Sailing on Easter Saturday 15 th April RHSC are holding another one of their monthly taster sails on Saturday 15 April. Whether you have joined the club and want to gain some confidence on the water or are interested and you just want to have a go why not come along and join us. HW is at 14:26. You will need to arrive at 13:00 so you can register and be kitted out with a buoyancy aid and for insurance purposes you will need to sign in as a temporary member (unless you are already a member). Please do wear warm clothes. If the weather is not suitable for sailing there will be the chance to cover some theory work in the clubhouse with the help of RYA videos as well as enjoy some food and drinks which will be available to buy. We do not charge for the taster sails, but if you are able to, would ask for a donation towards our fund for the RHSC Refurbishment Project. The bar will be open with food available to buy from the BBQ. Skipper, Simon Marsh giving Sarah Nelson and her son Hector a taster sail For further information about taster sails or to be sure of a place please contact Simon Marsh via simon@hi-flight.co.uk or call We look forward to meeting you on Saturday 15 April.
4 Page 4 Newsletter Title New members who joined the club in March We were delighted to welcome the following new members in March; Dave May and Oliver Thrall. RHSC new changing rooms to be completed on time The new changing rooms are on track for completion by 9 th May. Tolletts, the contractors, have been working hard to get the build completed on time. The roof and cladding are now complete with the internal and external door frames and doors fixed with floor screed laid ready for the vinyl floor covering to be fitted just before Easter. The electrical and plumbing first fixing and plastering are complete with the internal and external decoration work being carried out by the RHSC volunteers We are delighted with the progress to date and grateful to all club members, local businesses and the public who have supported this exciting new project. Grateful thanks to Simon Marsh, Rear Commodore Dinghies, who has generously offered his time and expertise to spray paint the interior walls and ceilings and the management committee who are donning overalls and painting the external cladding on Saturday. The official opening is to be held on Saturday 1 st July. Cladding is finished ready to paint For more information contact carolinewylson@btinternet.com External door fitted Subscriptions A reminder that your subscription to the club is due for renewal on 1st April. Additionally, and most importantly we need to collect participation details from members to be able to continue as a Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC). St George s Day Dinner Saturday 22 December We have an outside caterer who also made the delicious lunch at the AGM in December. The menu is beef casserole, or vegetarian option vegetable casserole with creamed potatoes and seasonal vegetables followed by English Trifle for 10 per person. Please let Glenda Wilson know if you would like to attend. A round robin will also be circulated.
5 Page 5 Push The Boat Out (PTBO) 13/14 May 2017 RHSC participation in Push the Boat Out 2017 (PTBO) will take place at the clubhouse on two days over the weekend of 13/14 May. The aim of the event is to introduce the club, and sailing, to as many interested members of the public as possible with the aim of recruiting them to be active members of RHSC. PTBO is a nationwide activity organised by the RYA over the period May; this year we have co-ordinated with Rye Watersports who are holding their PTBO event on the weekend 20/21 May. Those who attend the event usually fall into one of 3 categories: Those who have never sailed and want to give it a go (this will include parents who think their children might want to try it (particularly if it is associated with a summer activity during the school holidays)). Those who have sailed but have not, for some reason, sailed recently and want to start again. Those within this category will be: o Dinghy sailors o Cruiser sailors o Both of the above Those with specialist qualifications/ talents who would wish to be involved with the club in other ways (for instance safety boat operators) our monthly taster sailing sessions build on PTBO but this is the opportunity for the club to show itself off to the public. John Powell is organising the event again this year and is looking for volunteers to help out. If you wish to help in this high profile event please contact John at: jrj_powell@hotmail.com Cruiser Crew Briefing Friday 7 th April 2017 at 19:30 This meeting is to inform members of the proposed cruiser programme for the year and to introduce and assign potential new cruiser crew to skippers and set out the training programme for new crew members. It is hoped that representatives from the Royal Cinque Ports Yacht Club will be present to give us details of the RPYC/RHSC Regatta to be held on 27/28 May at Dover. Supper will be available. I look forward to seeing you at the meeting particularly if you wish to train as a crew member. Richard Hopper Rear Commodore, Cruisers.
6 Page 6 Newsletter Title Help Still Required for the Safety Boats We have had no response from our last appeal for help with the safety boats. If you have Power Boat 1 or Power Boat 2 qualifications or are in possession of the Day Skipper qualification you are considered qualified to man these boats. Please consider volunteering. The more people we have will ease the burden on the few already helping. You would not have to do more than two or three duties over the season or even one would be a help. We are in a position to offer a 2 day course for Power Boat Level 2 courses on Conningbrook Lake, Ashford in the near future. The cost of this is 130 If you are able to help or would like more details please contact Rescue Boat Coxswain David Tomkinson on or dejltomkinson@btinternet.com RHSC 100 Club If you would like to support our Development Project and you are feeling lucky why not join the Rye Harbour Sailing Club 100 Lottery. For the sum of 60 you are entitled to one number which will be entered into 12 monthly draws. Once a month you will have a chance to win a 1 st Prize of 100, 2 nd prize of 50 and 3 rd Prize of 25 with a bumper draw of 250 at Christmas. The draw will be held at the sailing club. If you win we will credit your bank account and winners will be published in the monthly newsletter. For an application form, to show that you would like to join in the fun and register your interest, please contact Ros Culver by at rhsc100club@yahoo.com Sharpen up your design skills by learning how to use Photoshop Are any members interested in having some free training on how to use Adobe Photoshop? What is Photoshop? You can use Photoshop to alter images like photos, download icons or scanned artwork. Altering an image includes doing such things as changing the colours within an image, modifying the size and scale of an image or putting a picture within a picture. You can also create images from scratch. Mark Mills, who is a software trainer, is willing to set up workshops at the club. If you are interested and keen to learn please contact Mark Mills at mark.a.mills@gmail.com
