Box 793, Fremont, CA Bailers Ball Fremont Sailing Club General Meeting Minutes Saturday November 14, 2015 Commodore Keith O Hara called the meeting to order at 20:15 hours at the Papillion s Restaurant in Fremont. Keith proceeded to introduce all of the members present saying about each one. Kathy Federico, our Treasurer, made a plea to all members to get their bill into her ASAP. 3 Fremont Sailing Club Board Meeting Minutes Tuesday November Members present: Chris Caron, Kathy Federico, Harold Ho, Keith O Hara, Vern Tucker, and Helga Wolff. Commodore Keith O Hara called the meeting to order at 19:15 hours. The minutes of the September 1, 2015 board meeting were approved, with the exception of two typo errors, as printed in the September- October 2015 Windjammer. Old Business: The status of the fecal infested North Dock at Lake Elizabeth during our events was discussed. Currently we are having difficulty getting the Lake Staff to clean off the dock prior to our events. Keith and some other members have been pouring buckets of lake water on the dock prior to the majority of our sailors launching their boats. The board feels that since our members are paying $7.00 to launch their boats, and the students in the sailing classes are paying about $ for each session, the least the City can do is provide a reasonably clean dock for us. It was also noted by the board that the south dock where the City runs its rental concession is always cleaned off. Keith will contact the City Parks Department to request that one of their dock workers clean up their act and clean the north dock prior to our events. This may mean one worker may have to start at 9:30 AM instead of their usual 10:00 AM. Keith will also contact the City to determine what entity, if any, is responsible to maintain the water level in Lake Elizabeth. There was also a discussion about who is responsible to trim the trees around the parking lot to prevent interference with our masts. New Business: It has come to the attention of the board that there appears to be a lack of communication between the board members and the members of the club. In some situations the new members are not being communicated to the editor and the members are not being informed of these members. Additionally the membership addresses are not being kept current. It was decided that Chris will forward to Vern a list of new members with their contact information. Additionally Chris will inform our editor of the new members. Vern will keep an updated roster and will publish a list of the new members as they join. Vern will also send, via , a welcome letter to the new members. The board received a request to join or sponsor RBOC (Recreational Boaters of California) which activities monitoring and advocating upon legislation that impacts boaters as it moves through Sacramento. Both PICYA, 110 individual Yacht Clubs, and the Southern California equivalent SCYA both sponsor RBOC. The board decided, since the FSC would not benefit directly by sponsoring RBOC, the FSC would not join at this time. The club has $ budgeted for new marks. We will be having a work party in early 2016 to bring our marks up to date. Vice Commodore: Bruce Prickett, reported via that we currently have 37 sailors attending the Bailers Ball on Saturday November 14 th. Fleet Reports: Lido: Harold announced that their annual cruise was held in the Redwood City channel aka Redwood Creek. They had 5 Lido s which enjoyed sticking their bows out into SF Bay. Harold also mentioned that they had a new family who were interested in the Lido. After taking a test sail in the Lido they went home and purchased a Lido later in the day. The Lido s will be having their annual Christmas party sometime in December. El Toro: Helga announced that the El Toro Christmas party will be held in December. The location and time is still being worked on. There being no further old or new business to discuss the meeting was adjourned at 20:08 hours. 4 Fremont Sailing Fleet reports LIDO REPORT Sunday, October 25th was a glorious sunny day out at Redwood City. Breaking slightly with our traditional annual Oakland Estuary cruise we decided to mix things up a bit this year and cruise out along Redwood Creek. Our timing could not have been more perfect! Under classic sunny California skies, we met up at the launch ramp at the end of Chesapeake Drive. We arrived early to meet a family looking to check out a Lido as a training sailboat to go sailing with their two young kids. As we rigged up, showed them the various bits and pieces, and answered their questions, more Lido s showed up! We were joined by Earl Thomas, Bruce Prickett, Richard Moser, and Josh Ott. While they were rigging, we took out the prospective Lido ers on a quick sail. Sadly at 10am, the winds had yet to wake up. But we had just enough breeze to get off the dock and do a few tacks up the channel before turning around and paddling back. Still, as we know, sailing a Lido sells itself and sure enough the family left for Sacramento to pick up their Lido they found on Craigslist. We hope to see then join our fleet next year. Meanwhile as we gathered at the docks the winds picked up just enough to fill our sails and we headed off. We tacked from small puff to small puff up Redwood Creek until we got about half-way to the Bay where we finally got a steady 4-5 kt breeze. Thanks to the high tide and plenty of warnings about the channel markers, nobody got stuck in the shallow mud on the edges of the channel. Where the creek emptied into the Bay, the winds were light again and the water as calm as I ve ever seen in the Bay. We decided to take advantage of the conditions and venture further around Redwood Point and head towards the San Mateo bridge. Alas there was not enough wind to get us much further before we decided to turn back. The ride back was a relaxing broad reach to deaddownwind. When the wind picked up, we couldn t help but head up for a short tack upwind just to get a chance to hike on the rails! Earl even got a chance to hang way out there! Before long, we were back at the launch ramp with the winds up just enough for a challenging docking experience. But we all made it back and in typical Lido fashion helped each other haul out and de-rig. Huge thanks to Bruce Prickett for organizing and carrying aboard his electric motor should any of us require assistance! We all appreciated the comfort of having a safety boat along even if we didn t need it. Saturday, November 14th we had our Awards Banquet at Papillon s in Fremont. Huge thanks to Bruce Prickett for organizing the delicious event. Turnout was great, especially from the Lido s! Congrats to Earl for winning 2nd place for the season, and to Maria and myself for winning the 3 seasons and overall Fleet 62 Trophy. We re hoping for more Lido s and competition on the water next year. Coming up, we ll end this year with a Lido Christmas party on Sunday, December 20th at the Navarra s. And, we ll kick off 2016 with our annual Crew Appreciation brunch. Stay tuned for details. Here s hoping the El Niño brings plenty of rain to keep Lake Liz full for a great year of Lido sailing! Harold Ho El Toro REPORT 2015 is almost over but we have one more event the ET Christmas Party. This year it will be at Sybil s and Art s home on December 13 at 2:30pm. If you like bring a toy, school supplies, or children clothes for a donation to a charity. Thank you to all the people helping me making this a successful El Toro sailing year. 5 2015 El Toro Season Championship "Fred Paxton is an honorable man, ready to do what he said he will do, no mater what. This time he said he would be the race committee boat and PRO for the Richmond Yacht Club's Great Pumpkin Race weekend planned for October 24th. He said he would do it when the El Toro Season's last race, the Corkscrew, was scheduled for October 17th, one weekend previous. Later the Sequoia Yacht Club's race date was changed to the 24th. For a number of years Fred has followed Art Lange by just a little for the Season Championship. After winning the April BullShip Race, Fred was off to a great start to win the 2015 season. But Fred and Art traded the lead month after month. They where actually tied going into the last race that Fred would miss! So it looked like Art would win again. So another year would go by with Fred oh-so very close in second place. Fred had no idea what was to happen. As it turned out Art finished third in the Cork- Screw. What that meant was that Art and Fred tied in points for the season. By doing the 'right thing' Fred was rewarded. Fred's three first place finishes was one better that Art's two first's, so Fred Paxton wins the 2015 El Toro Season Championship! Art was second and Vaughn Seifers was third."
