Hamburg, 31 st of July 2013 Bigboat Sailing within one s gasp in Flensburg Nord Stream Race 2013 starts with Match Race Match Racing is probably the most popular form of regatta sailing that can attract and thrill a public audience. Therefore the organisers of Nord Stream Race 2013 have decided to crown the start of the 800sm long-distance-regatta from Flensburg to Saint Petersburg with a Match Raceevent that is going to draw the attention of sailing- and water sports-fans from all over the region. The Match Race-Regatta is going to be held with almost 20 metre-long Gazprom Swan 60 yachts. The Swan 60s are a dynamic one-design-class, which celebrated its initiation last year. Five teams from five different countries will compete directly in a one on one challenge on Thursday, 12th of September. Public Viewing with commentary and entertainment The races will take place right in front of the harbour mole at the Marina Sonwik in Flensburg so that spectators can be close to the action. A sailing expert will comment on the manoeuvres and explain the course of events to the public. To round off the exciting events on the water a race village with catering has been planned next to the yacht harbour. After the match race the prize giving ceremony will take place here as well. Five Swan 60 teams from five nations One of the Nord Stream Match Race competitors is Team Germany, sponsored by Norddeutscher Regatta Verein, with Dr. Johann Killinger helming. America s Cup- and Volvo Ocean Race veteran Tim Kröger will again steer Team Europe like he already did in Also entering for the second time is the current Swan 60 world champion, starting as Team Russia, as well as Team Holland who are well known from The newcomer this year is Team Turkey and it is eagerly awaited whether they can maybe spring a surprise. In 2012 at the Nord Stream Race premiere the Match Racing was already a highlight of the whole event. It was carried out in front of the beautiful scenery of the Finnish capital of Helsinki. Back then Team Germany took the win, followed by Team Russia and Team Holland.

The regatta starts on September 15th 2013 from Glücksburg. The route passes east of Bornholm and then follows the Nord Stream gas pipeline which is also the name giver of the race. The finish line is just a few miles off Saint Petersburg. The Race is open for the Gazprom Swan 60 Class and yachts under ORC-handicap. Depending on the size and type of the respective yacht and on the wind conditions the boats will be on the water for approximately four to six days. Organiser of this top-class event is the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (NRV) together with Saint Petersburg Yacht Club (SPBYC), supported by Flensburger Segel-Club (FSC). The Nord Stream Race was initiated in 2012 and serves the transnational connection between the Baltic Rim countries on a sporting level.

Norddeutscher Regatta Verein: The Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (NRV) founded 1868 not only is the largest yacht club in Germany but at the same time it is also a major organizer of national and international sailing events. One of the main objectives today is the development of our young sailors.
