Reciprocity Reminder Our Reciprocity Chair, the Board and I wish to remind all members of the following, due to recent experience with some upriver cruisers 1. Calling days ahead to reserve free accommodations is not proper etiquette; AYC can provide reciprocity moorage on a first come, first serve basis, as per standard custom, and we can demand no more from other Clubs. 2. Arriving at other moorages and demanding free accommodations in any case, especially where no Reciprocity agreement exists, is clearly improper. Reciprocity is a privilege - an annual contract exchanged by both consenting parties, based on good reputation, and if none exists clearly no demands should be made of others, or ever again from the Commodore. 3, On no account any further will such or any AYC member charge moorage to AYG claiming their membership with another club. These points are made so there shall be no disputes; all of us can be affected by the improper manners of a few. Particularly, as AYC has been so positively accepted in renewed Membership with the Columbia River Yachting Association. I congratulate our Club Members for their integrity, fine manners and humbleness as each of us is an Ambassador for the Astoria Yacht club. 2 Photos from the 2008 Astoria Regatta Photos: Lynette Hubert AYC Race Report August 2008 The big racing event in August was the Astoria Regatta. The two day event was divided into a long race on Saturday, and a series of short buoy races on Sunday. A great pair of fleets came to race: The A-fleet composed of 5 Olson 30s, a Carerra 29 and a Cheetah 30. The B-fleet was composed of Santana 22 and a Cal 20. The long race ran from Buoy 37 in front of Astoria down to buoy 21; just this side of the Clatsop Spit for the A fleet, and to Buoy 29 for the B fleet. Conditions were challenging with gusty winds at the start and up to 37 knot gusts in the open water downstream of the bridge. The boats that read the conditions and set up appropriately did well. There was only one boat that had to abandon the race, which speaks to the skill and preparation of the overall fleet. Gladiator, the Cheetah 30, took advantage of some tight reaching conditions to plane over the line first, and corrected out first in the A fleet. The Cal 20 was unchallenged for first in B fleet. The Sunday series was run round the buoys off the Astoria Waterfront. Conditions made for good racing, with enough wind to move steadily and not a lot of current. Starts were tricky, with boats over the line early or mixing it up with the committee boat on each start. There was close racing, with as many as 5 boats converging on the marks at a time. At the end, both fleets had a convincing champion, with Gladiator taking four firsts in the A fleet and Local Motion taking four firsts in the B fleet. A Fleet Boat Points B Fleet Boat Points 200+ Boat Points 1 Gladiator 4 2 Rattler 13 3 Mach One 14 4 Black Aye 16 5 Cara Mia 17 6 Zephyr 22 7 Wildfire 25 1 Local Motion 4 2 Hugglig 8 1 Brass Ring 2 2 Tom Cat 5 3 Water Music 7 4 Barefoot 8 5 Hugglig 10 6 Kunamara 11 Small Boat Series, August 24. A strong fleet of small boats competed in the August series. Conditions were challenging, with a strong, gusty southwest wind filling in at knots, with a steady rain accompanying. The start was critical with finishing positions mirroring the order over the starting line. Two races were run by the committee volunteers who cheerfully anchored out in the rain to support the racers. Hal Nauman and his crew, Jim Tongue and Stan Miller, blasted through with two fist place finishes to dominate the day.
3 Commodore s Watch Its been a great Summer, and Astoria Yacht Club has made a joyful splash on the water: Life at full bore! Wet from above, however, is still an occasional Summer experience, so finally we: ask Is there a Meteorologist in the house? We thought not. Meteorology, therefore, is now defined by Astoria Yacht Club as the rapid flight of known, wet objects, Watch stuff go by in a good summer howler around here and you may recognize someone, or something.. Note Item One: The Club Tent. In the middle of an altogether great Regatta weekend a quick squall lifted it off for - fortunately - a brief flight.. Were now straightening out some poles, but otherwise its fine. And grounded. Item Two: Us. Sailing the PERF 200+ series last Sunday Meteorology again became evident through a decent sou wester - those were not all Dutchmen levitating out there. Gleefully we found that top speed is greatly improved if you forget hull speed since the hull doesn't have to touch the water anyway! OTHERWISE we re perfectly dry, and just as happy. AYC s Regatta activity was truly enjoyable. Friday evening we hosted a packed tent of visiting Clubs - prior to the evenings sailing of seven participating Classic boats, as made possible by Toby, Spud Siegel and many others. Pacing Captain Thor Sorenson organized not just a traditional downriver run (Saturday) but as well a fabulous tight sprint series Sunday directly in front of downtown Astoria. With an additional three boats racing this year - a total of nine - this was a workout. Everyone greatly appreciated the work of the Race Committee - Sharon Clyde, Jake Rehlinger and Stuart Sinclair, and believe me, if there were any manner of compliment or bribe that could keep our boat from getting the Bent Propeller Award for consistently colliding with them, I d aim for that, too. AYC s Ducky Derby was a great success thanks to Norm and Jeanette Davis; and a special, warm Thank You to Catherine Anderson for making the Sunday Breakfast a reality. Meteorology owes us one more month of good weather - and we intend to use it: September 7 will be the third and final 2008 small boat meet at East Basin (contact - Stan Miller), and September 13-14th is AYC s third cruise this year - our overnight Raft-up at Lois Island aboard the Millikan, with dinner and then a full breakfast served aboard - a wonderful way to wind down the season. And then, without delay, stepping right indoors for Fall, there is no more enjoyable occasion than our Luau September 20 at Pier 39. What's wet, will dry; and what's dry, will get wet. What's important is we haven't missed either - its all to enjoy. Have a great time! Board Minutes - August 20th Board Present: Jim Tongue, Marcy Phillips, Dot Martin, Gene Holmes, Thor Sorenson Minutes: The minutes of the July 2008 meeting were presented via the newsletter and approved. Correspondence: The USS Tide reunion was documented recently by a lovely book of portraits of the participants. New Members: RJ Lennon Sr., Newport 28, was approved for renewal Committee Reports: Membership: We need to assure that Gene is gets new member applications promptly upon receipt so that new members can be processed into the club without delay. New member data will be transmitted to Gene promptly after each board meeting in which memberships are approved. Newsletter: Several members have expressed interest in receiving the newsletter via . The newsletter will also be posted on our website. Website: Several members are sending in cruising log entries. These will be posted on the website. Race committee: Racing is ongoing through the summer. Unofficial matches are happening Tuesdays with the Olson fleet. The Astoria Regatta was a success with much good racing in challenging conditions. The Small Boat Sunday series continues, with great participation in a growing fleet. Hal Nauman smoked the fleet with two first palace finishes in the August 24 event. Reciprocity: A motion to commend Gene Holmes for outstanding chairmanship of the reciprocity committee was passed by universal acclimation. Jim discussed our club policy regarding reciprocity courtesy. All current clubs with which we share reciprocity agreements are listed on the club website. Jim will communicate reciprocity protocols in a communication to the membership. Lois Island Raftup: The Host barge has been chartered. There will be no boat fee for the raftup. The Spaghetti dinner will be $10 each, and Longshoremen s Breakfast will also be $10 a head. Luau: will be on the first floor of the Pier 39 complex. The party is Sept 20. Attendees should RSVP by Sept 10. Admission will be $10. Commodores Ball: will be at the Elks with a $20 steak dinner on offer. The event will be moved to the 4 th Saturday of October to avoid a facility conflict. This change will be prominently announced in this and future newsletters. The meeting was adjourned at 2100 hours. Incorporating Fisher Brothers Industrial Our new 40,000 square foot facility located at 95 Hamburg Ave at the Port of Astoria
4 Steaming on Lake Whatcom by Norm Davis It was a leisurely weekend on the12 mile long lake. In this first picture, on the beach is the Flyer, an Elliott Bay, 21 footer. Within the fleet, this is one of the fastest boats. The black hull astern is the Uno. She is rafted to the Catlyst The Cat is one of the faster boats in the fleet. Barely visible in the background next to the Flyer s stack is the canopy of the Whistler, the fleet party boat. And past the dock, being admired by all is the Magnolia a re-launched miniature tug. The boats pictured here all burn wood. Some also burn oil. Even those use a wood fire to start building steam which is then used to atomize and inject the oil into the firebox where the flames ignite it to augment the wood fire. Very few of the boats are pure oil burners with electric ignition systems for an oil burner. On the left is the very pretty launch Quickstep II. Next to her is a better shot of the Whistler. This little steamer started life in 1947 as a 21 Chris Craft cabin cruiser. Her cabin rotted out and was cleared away aft of the foredeck to create a large open cockpit for a boiler and steam engine, plus 8-10 people truly the party boat of the fleet. Above on the right we are looking into the wheelhouse of the Magnolia. Dave had an old rusted up engine laying about for 35 years. He saw this hull, thought it right, fixed up the engine, along with a old spotlight he found, and put it all together. Out on the lake she is a very pretty miniature tug. (The Whistler kind of reminds one of the African Queen.) On the right is a better shot of the Uno, which started life in 1894 on Lopez Island as a sloop. She has traveled a lot since then but always made back. Somewhere along the way she was converted to be a steamboat. The mast step on the foredeck is put to use as a flowerpot by her skipper, Stephanie Hylton. In the fleet, she is the oldest boat running. The Uno is about 22 long. Here we are looking across the under construction Tenacious at the Flyer. This hull is built in Seattle and there are a number of them with different deck configurations, boilers and engines in the fleet. Tenacious (#9354) is a pretty fantailed 17 fiberglass hull that the owner has added boiler, engine and steering gear. The sheer strip is in place along with a couple of cross braces and he is trying the steam plant out. (It got towed in.) Pier 39 Astoria Foot of 39th Street Astoria, Oregon Floyd E. 5 And here we have an good shot of the Flyer. She has great lines. She really does look special when cruising. When her skipper puts the pedal to the metal, she buries her stern and really steps out. The dock hand handling lines is my son Matt. Behind the Flyer is a shot of the aft end of the tug Magnolia. At the left is a brand new boat with the steam plant only recently added. This picture only begins to show the polish on this one. She is truly a floating piece of furniture. The mahogany is excellently finished. As you can see, the piping, the engine and all the fittings are quite well polished and luxurious looking. If any of you have an interest in looking at more of these boats, their website is at: northweststeamsociety.org. Some have boats others cars, trains, stationary enfines, etc. When you open the site and click on the logo, have your speakers on. This shot shows the Uno coming in with yours truly in the aft cockpit. You also have a good shot of the Catalyst. She has a solid canopy that like the other canopied boats can be buttoned up in other weather. Being a bit slower, with age, I had forgotten to take my camera. So, these pictures were forwarded to me by some of the other folks that did take some shots. The folks here are in the Northwest Steam Society. This is the group I have invited to Astoria in September for a little mini-meet on the John Day. While I don t know how much of a turnout we will get then, hope to seem them here. The last two times the folks that did come really enjoyed the trip up the John Day to the old log marshalling pond and steaming up Prairie Channel to the Knappa Docks. While this picture was taken at an earlier meet, had to include it here to show another of the pretty little launches. She is 80 years old and the skipper doesn t trail her off the lake anymore. 6 2008 Regatta Hospitality Event By Lynette Hubert There has been a Regatta off Astoria in the Lower Columbia since at least In 1931 the Portland Yacht Club gifted its Astoria friends with the club house building we enjoyed until the December storm of last year, and the official incorporation of the Astoria boaters as the Astoria Yacht Club began then. In 2011, when Astoria celebrates 200 years the AYC will celebrate eighty. It is the annual custom to entertain the Portland Yacht Club members who come here on the Friday afternoon before the races with welcoming words and plentiful food and drink. This year our commodore had an excellent variety and substantial portions of delicious snacks and tempting beverages which were happily enjoyed by our guests and members alike. Inside the hospitality tent there was no word of concern about the blustery conditions threatened for the morrow by weather forecasters: just good cheer and fellowship. On August 13th, as it does yearly at the Regatta, our local Ducky Derby continued his work by raising money for the Lower Columbia chapter of the Sea Scouts, headed by Toby Dyal. This year's event was captained by Jeanette Davis. Denny Page shot off a cannon at the south end of the West Mooring Basin to begin the scramble set in motion by Jeanette, who released more than 150 of the little yellow squawkers at the west side of the roped-off derby area.
