1 Unit 3: Miracles of Jesus NT3.7 Jesus Calms the Storm Scripture: Matthew 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41; and Luke 8:22-25 Lesson Goal: Jesus was a very powerful teacher. He proved to everyone that he was really God by healing the sick and forgiving people of their sins. In this lesson we will see how Jesus calmed the storm. Introduction: This is the seventh lesson in Unit 3:The Miracles of Jesus. The life and ministry of Jesus is told to us in the first four books of the New Testament. Jesus was a very powerful teacher. He proved to everyone that he was really God by healing the sick and forgiving people of their sins. In this lesson we will see how Jesus calmed the storm. The Gospels are the first four books in the New Testament. The gospels tell about the life and ministry of Jesus. The word "gospel" means the good news about Jesus. Let's say the names of the gospels together. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Attention Getter: Have you ever been in a storm with lots of rain and lightning? It is scary isn't it? A tornado is a bad windstorm. Often there is rain and lightning in a tornado. When a tornado happens at sea or over a lake, it is called a waterspout. Waterspouts can be very dangerous storms for small boats. You would not want to be in a boat during a bad rainstorm, would you? Storms at sea are very dangerous! When Jesus was here on earth he wanted everyone to know that He was God. One way to prove this to people was to show His power over nature. Jesus is the Creator of the world and so He could give commands to nature and it would obey Him! Only God could do that! In this lesson we will study how Jesus showed the disciples His great power. Jesus calmed a storm. Optional: For younger children use a rope or blanket or masking tape to outline a boat. Position a fan to blow on the boat. Have the children sit inside the boat as you tell the story or play the video story. Optional: As class starts open a window in your room and have a volunteer speak to the wind and tell it to pick up speed or be still, depending on whether or not its blowing. Present the class with a glass of water. Have another volunteer speak to the water and command it to splash, bubble or swirl. Obviously the children will not be able to control the wind and the water, but you can use this illustration to help them understand how humans do not have authority over the water or the wind. Ask the children to imagine what it would be like to control the weather. How might they use that power? Ask them if they know who has authority over all things, including the wind and water. (God) Opening Prayer: Let's pray. Dear Father in heaven, we thank you for those times when you calm the storms that come up in our daily lives. We also thank you for those times when you give us peace even though we are in the middle of a storm. We ask you to watch over us and keep us safe. Thank you that You are with us always. Help us to think about You and Your great power instead of worrying about our own problems. Help us to trust You to take care of our problems. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen. Memory Verse: Our memory verse is Psalm 46:1-2a "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear," Lesson Video: Jesus began his ministry on the north end of the Sea of Galilee. The Sea of Galilee is really a large lake with hills around it. One evening after preaching to a crowd all day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake." Leaving the crowds behind they got into a boat and set off. The trip across the lake was about 13 miles. The boat would take them to the region of Gerasenes.

The weather was calm as they set off and Jesus was very tired from preaching all day. As they set sail, Jesus fell asleep on a cushion at the back of the boat. The Sea of Galilee is surrounded by very high hills and strong winds can come down off these hills and blow across the lake causing very violent storms. As Jesus and his disciples were sailing that night, suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake. It was a really bad storm and the big waves began to sweep over the boat. Water flooded into the boat faster than the disciples could bail it out. Although the disciples were experienced fishermen they became very afraid. The boat was in great danger and was about to sink! They began to fear for their lives. But Jesus was still fast asleep on a cushion in the rear of the boat. The disciples shook him to make Him wake up. They said, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" Jesus replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then Jesus stood up in the violently rocking boat and gave orders to the wind and the waves. "Quiet, be still!" Then the storm subsided. Immediately the wind died down and it was completely calm. How could Jesus do that? You see Jesus is God the Son and He can do anything! Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Have you no faith?" In fear and amazement the disciples asked one another, What kind of man is this? He commands even the winds and the waves, and they obey him! The disciples had seen Jesus power to heal the sick, but this time Jesus stopped a terrible storm with just a few words! Only God could do that miracle! Jesus wanted the disciples to realize that He was God in human body. He is the mighty One, the creator of the universe. He has all power and all wisdom and all knowledge. And He loves all of us with his everlasting love. He can be with us every minute of every day. In fact, the Lord Jesus promises, I am with you always (Matthew 28:20). We don t have to worry or be afraid because we can trust Him to take care of us no matter what the situation. When we are afraid, we can tell Him how we feel and ask Him to take care of the problem. He will help us be calm and quiet on the inside. Isn t it wonderful to know that He can do anything? Even the wind and sea became completely calm because of Jesus power! What are some times that you might be afraid? Perhaps you are afraid at bedtime. It is dark and you hear strange noises. What can you do? Remember you can pray and ask Jesus to help you. Sometimes when you are in a big crowd you can be afraid. We have all had that feeling some time in our life. Well, what can we do? We can pray and ask Jesus to help us find our parents or a policeman. Remember Jesus loves and will help us be calm. A big dog that barks very loudly is very frightening. Even adults know that dogs can be dangerous. What should we do when we see a dog like that? You can pray and ask Jesus to help you not be afraid and to give you protection. Being afraid is normal. Fear warns us of danger and can keep us out of trouble. But what we do with our fear is what makes the difference. When we look to God for help it is like we are getting in the boat with Jesus, He will calm the storms of our life. We can trust and believe in Jesus. He will strengthen and help us! Remember we can trust Jesus because He is the Son of God! Review Questions: Human Tic Tac Toe Human Tic Tac Toe is a fun spin on regular Tic Tac Toe. Create a grid on the floor using masking tape. Make the squares large enough for a child to comfortably stand inside. Divide the children into two teams. Children wear an X or O on a necklace. The necklaces can be made by cutting a poster board into an X and O on a Cri-cut machine or a die cut machine. Just use a hole punch in the top of the X or O and string it with a piece of yarn or string to hang around the child's neck. A child must answer a Bible question in order to stand in a Tic Tac Toe square. If you don't have enough children to form two teams, you can always place an X or O in the spot after a child answers a question. Just like the regular game, once a team gets three X's or three O's in a row, they win! 1. What is the name of the lake where Jesus preached? (The Sea of Galilee) 2. What did Jesus ask His friends to do for Him? (Take Him across the lake in their boat.) 3. What did Jesus do when He got into the boat? (Went to sleep on a pillow at the back of the boat.) 4. What happened while Jesus and His disciples were sailing over to the other side of the lake? (A great windstorm arose and the waves were coming into the boat.) 5. How can the Lord Jesus give you peace when you are in the middle of the storms of life? (Remember that He is with you and is powerful enough to control everything in life.) 2

6. What was Jesus doing while the waves were threatening to swamp the ship? (He was sleeping soundly in the back of the boat.) 7. How could Jesus sleep in such a storm? (Either He was completely exhausted, or He had complete faith that the Father would take care of them.) 8. Why did the disciples wake Jesus up? (The disciples thought they were going to drown.) 9. When the disciples found Jesus asleep on a pillow, what did they say to Jesus? ("Don't you care if we drown?") 10. How did Jesus calm the storm? (He spoke and said, "Peace be still.") 11. What happened to the wind and the waves when Jesus spoke to them? (They completely stopped and became peaceful.) 12. Why did the winds and the sea obey Jesus? (Because Jesus is the Son of God. He is all powerful.) 13. How would you have felt if you had been in the boat when Jesus stopped the storm? (Glad, happy to be alive; amazed at His power, etc.) 14. Why was Jesus disappointed that the disciples were so afraid of the storm? (It showed their lack of faith in Him.) 15. What did the disciples fear even more than the storm? (When they saw that Jesus could stop a storm just by speaking a few words, they realized He had power even over the forces of nature. They wondered what power He did have and where He got it from.) 16. What is peace? (Quietness on the inside; in our hearts.) Bible Memory Verse Activity: Song: "God is Our Refuge and Strength" Our memory verse is Psalm 46:1-2a "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear," That is a great promise! It s not easy to keep going through the hard times in your life. Let's say that verse again together. Psalm 46:1-2a "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear," Obtain a CD or DVD of a song that uses Psalm 46:1-2 as the lyrics. Several songs have been written with this verse. Check albums with scripture choruses. Sing the song several times. Use hand motions for "God" (point upward); "refuge" (hit fist into hand or form into a rock); "strength" (raise arm like a wrestler); "will not" (shake head no); "fear" (put fingers around eyes like you are afraid). Have students improvise other motions to fit the words. Bible Memory Verse Activity: Boat Verse Puzzle Our memory verse is Psalm 46:1-2a "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear," That is a great promise! It s not easy to keep going through the hard times in your life. Let's say that verse again together. Psalm 46:1-2a "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear," Give children an outline of a boat to decorate and to fill in the blanks on the boat puzzle with today's Bible verse on it. The teacher can have a few words from today's verse and the children can fill in the rest! Then tell the children to cut their boats into 6, 8 or 10 pieces, (as teacher desires for class ages). Then the children will pass their cut up Bible boat puzzle to the right and let another child try to put the boat puzzle together! Group Learning Game: Sink or Float? (Grades K-3) Say: "Today in our story Jesus' friends, the disciples, were afraid when big waves crashed into their boat. They thought their boat would sink. We are going to do an activity that will help us understand what feelings they may have had." Procedure: Set a dishpan of water about one-third full on a low table or the floor. Have towels under it or nearby to catch the spills. Supply toy boats and plastic lids. Encourage the children to sail the boats. Have them make waves by moving the plastic lids or their fingers slowly back and forth in the water. Give them sprinkling cans or margarine tubs with hole in the bottom so they can make it rain on the boats. You can also supply items that sink or float such as rocks, metal spoons, small paper scraps, blunt-end scissors, crayons, plastic blocks, Styrofoam plates or cups, 3

sponges, corks, etc. Let the children drop the items in the water and tell if they sink or float. Children can make simple boats from ovals cut from Styrofoam plates, toothpicks, and a triangular piece of craft foam. Optional: Play a tape of a thunderstorm. Your local library may have CDs or rain storms available. Have the children listen to the rainstorm. Group Learning Activity: Rain Rhythm Music or Dance (Grades K-3) Materials: Musical recording of rainfall or thunderstorm; Classroom rhythm instruments such as a tambourine, sticks, triangle, bells, finger cymbals, wooden cylinders, etc. Procedure: Play a recording of rainfall or a thunderstorm. Give the children scarves and lead them in moving with the music, or give them rhythm instruments or rain sticks to play along with the music. When it is thundering and storming walk quickly around the room waving the scarves or tapping the sticks loudly. When it is gently raining or the storm is going away, move slowly, letting the scarves float gently, or use the stick in a quiet way. Talk about the music. Retell the Bible story, reinforcing the fact that Jesus is with us. If you do not have a thunderstorm recording, have the children use the rhythm instruments to make storm sounds in response to your directions. Say: "How does the thunder sound? Can you make a thunder sound? How does the rain sound now? Can you make a quiet rain sound? How do you feel when you are in a thunderstorm?" Talk about how Jesus is with us even when we are afraid. Group Learning Activity: Wave Bottle (Grades K-5) Materials: Bible, several clear plastic soda bottles with lids; funnel, glue, pitcher of water, blue food coloring; measuring cup; vegetable oil; dish pan to catch water when filling the bottles. Procedure: Make a wave bottle by filling an empty clear plastic soda bottle half with water and half with vegetable oil. Add blue food coloring. Put glue on the inside of the cap before tightening it so it will securely seal. Tape the cap for added security. Give the student the "wave bottle" and encourage them to "make waves" by moving the bottle. Make small waves by tilting the bottle slowly; make large waves by tilting the bottle quickly; and then no waves at all. Say: Our Bible lesson was about a big storm. Jesus and His friends were in a boat during the storm. The waves were so big that Jesus' friends were scared. They asked Jesus for help and He stopped the storm. The Bible says that Jesus is so powerful that only He could stop the storm. Jesus helped His friends when they were afraid. He will help us when we are afraid, too." 4 Group Learning Activity: A Raging Storm (Grades K-4) Purpose: This game helps students understand how frightening and hectic that moment in the disciples lives must ve been when Jesus calmed the storm. Procedure: To give the kids a sense of the urgency of the moment arrange the chairs in a boat shape and have half the students sit inside the boat. The other half stayed should sit outside the boat, armed with lots of inflated blue balloons. Tell the students that the balloons represent the raging water. When the leader says, "go," the children sitting on the outside of the boat swamp the boat with blue balloons, while the students on the inside the boat have to bail the balloons out of the boat as fast as they can. To add to the effects have an adult use a spray bottle full of water to spray the students during the activity. After three minutes, all the students are to trade places.

5 Group Learning Activity: Safe in the Storm Game (Grades K-5) Materials: Bible, index cards, markers, empty 2 liter plastic water or soda bottle, and soft sponge ball. Preparation: On separate index cards print a variety of places your students might go (home, school, park, grocery store, woods, lake, beach, soccer field, pool, amusement park, city, shopping mall, grocery store, library, etc.) Procedure: Students sit in a large circle on the floor. Place the plastic bottle upright in the center of the circle. Ask a volunteer to select a card you have prepared from the basket. The volunteer tells a time a kid his or her age might be afraid or worried in that place. The volunteer then chooses another student to tell a way Jesus might someone in that situation. After the class successfully answers a way that Jesus could help us, then the volunteer is to stand guard over the bottle with their feet or hands. The children sitting in the circle then take turns throwing the sponge ball attempting to knock the bottle over. Remind the students they must remain seated during the game in order for their throw to count. The student who successfully knocks the bottle over take the volunteer's place in the center of the circle. Repeat the process with the new student selecting a card, telling a situation, and guarding the bottle. Group Learning Activity: "Five Boats of Peace" Acrostic Poem (Grades 3-5) Say: "In this lesson Jesus calmed the Sea of Galilee by saying, "Peace, be still." We are going to talk about the meaning of the word peace. I am going to draw five boats on this poster board or whiteboard. In each of the outlines of the boats I am going to write one letter from the word PEACE. We are going to think of a word or phrase that describes Peace that begins with that letter. We want to show what Jesus does or what we can do when we go through a storm in life." Have students look up the following verses for help in understanding PEACE: John 14:27; Isaiah 9:6; Psalm 29:11; Proverbs 3: 13; 17; Philippians 4:7; Numbers 6:26. Discuss the idea that peace is used to indicate freedom from and inward or outward disturbance. It means to be quiet in our soul. Peace comes from having faith in Jesus Christ." Here is an example of an acrostic poem about PEACE. P--pray for God's help E--everlasting peace comes from God A--Always trusting God to help us C--confidence that God is always with us. E--easy to be afraid but wise to trust God Group Learning Activity: Crew Boats Game (Grades 3-5) This is a high energy game and is best played in a gym or large room with a large group of students. Group all the students into "teams" of at least 4 kids each. Then using a captain's dialect, explain that they are all on your ship. You will call out a certain command and each team will work quickly to "act it out." The team who does the best acting job or is the quickest to comply with the captain's orders gets a point. As quickly as you can go over the commands. Here they are. When the Captain says: "starboard"--everyone on the team must touch the wall on the right "Port" --everyone on the team must touch the wall on the left "stern" everyone on the team must touch the back wall. "bow" everyone on the team must touch the front wall "swab the deck" everyone on the team pretends to mop the floor Cap'n's Comin" everyone on the team lines up and salutes "Land Ahoy!" one person steers the ship while another person on the team stands behind him and looks through a periscope "Man overboard!" two people get down on one knee, join hands and make a rail while the another person pretends to fall over it with the fourth person yelling "man overboard." "Row Ye Scurvy Scum" everyone on the team sits in a straight line, one in front of the other and "rows the boat." "Sea Monster!" everyone on the team joins hand in the center and waves their hands outside of the circle like a giant octopus. Remember, the faster you call out the commands, the crazier things will get. Have referees walking around to judge who is the fastest or best. Award the winning team with some fish crackers!

6 Craft Learning Activity: Blow Painting (Grades K-5) Materials: Newspapers to cover table, light colored construction paper, squeeze bottle with tem-pera paint, straws, water and paper towels for cleanup Procedure: Cover the tables with newspaper. Give each child a piece of paper. Squeeze little pools of paint onto the paper. Let the child use the straw and blow the paint. They ll want to point the straw in the direction they want the paint to go. When they are finished, discuss whether their paintings look like waves and if so, whether they are calm or stormy. Say: "In our lesson Jesus calmed the sea. When He spoke the words, "Peace! Be still!" the wind obeyed Him. Our paintings help us understand that even though we have trouble making paint blow the direction we want and our wind does not obey our desires, Jesus is so powerful that He can do anything and He makes it work out perfectly!" Craft Learning Activity: Boat Picture (Grades K-3) Preparation: Distribute to each child a full sheet of light blue paper, a 4" X 12" strip of gray paper, and a 4" X 12" strip of dark blue paper. Display a completed example of the craft project. Procedure: Show the children how to cut unevenly along one long side of the gray paper for the cloudy sky. Have the children glue the gray strip at the top of the light blue paper, matching the straight edges. Show the children how to cut the dark blue paper to make waves. Tell the children to glue the waves at the bottom of the light blue paper, putting the glue only along the straight edges. Give each child a white half circle and a brown half circle. Have the children glue these together as shown in the sketch. Put the boat in the water. Children can make their boats sail smoothly or go up and down in the waves. Stick the Bible verse label on the waves. Have the children say the memory verse with you. Craft Learning Activity: Make a boat (Grades K-3) Say: "In our lesson Jesus showed His power over the wind and waves. He promises to protect and strengthen those who trust in Him. We are going to make a boat today to remind us of God's power over nature." Materials: Margarine tub with lid for each child; oil based clay or floral clay, a craft stick, construction paper, tape or glue. Instructions: Cut a rectangular sail from construction paper or craft foam. Tape or glue the sail to the top of the craft stick. Roll the clay into a ball and stick it inside the margarine tub. Use scissors to cut a hole in the center of the lid. Stick the craft stick through the slit in the lid into the clay in the tub. Options: (1) Use bars of Ivory soap instead of margarine tubs and clay. Stick the sail directly into the soap. (2) make the sail from craft foam. (3) Draw a cross on the sail. (4) Make the boat from small individual milk cartons cut in half. (5) Cut a paper plat in half to use for the bottom of the boat.

7 Craft Learning Activity: Storm Scene (Grades K-3) Say: "In our Bible story today, Jesus and His friends were in a big storm. Jesus' friends were very afraid. But Jesus told the storm to stop and it did! Jesus helped His friends when they were afraid. Today we are going to make a picture that shows a storm." Materials: Bible, 1/2 inch wide aluminum foil strips; cotton balls, construction paper in dark colors, glue. Procedure: Children will make storm scenes by bending foil into lightning zigzags and stretching out cotton balls to make clouds. Children will glue lightning and clouds to paper. Demonstrate how to bend foil into zigzags. Have children color using blue and black markers the cotton ball clouds. Have children write the memory verse on the picture. Younger children may need for you to print the verse on a label and then let them stick the label to their picture. OR write Jesus Gives Peace in the Middle of the Storm as a title. Craft Learning Activity: Recycled Can Wind Sock (Grades 3-5) Say: In our Bible lesson Jesus demonstrated His power by controlling nature. During the storm at sea Jesus spoke and the wind obeyed His words. God was the Creator of Nature and only He command the wind to be calm. One way to measure the strength and direction of wind is to use a windsock. Today we will make a windsock. Wind changes can suggest an approaching storm. The storm on the Sea of Galilee came up suddenly and caught everyone by surprise. We will make a windsock so we can know when the wind is changing._ Materials: paint, paint brushes, recycled tin cans, masking tape, assorted ribbon and fabric strips, glue, yardstick, scissors, and optional embellishments like glitter, stickers gemstones or sequins. Procedure: Cut both ends of the tin cans out with a can opener. Line the inside of the rims of the cans with a layer or two of masking tape to avoid sharp edges. Have students paint the outside of the tin can with paint in colorful design. Let dry thoroughly. Other embellishments may be added to the wind sock as desired. Have the children measure and cut nine streamers from fabric or colorful ribbon that are 26 inches long. Have the children tape or glue the streamers to the bottom edge of the tin can. Let the strips dry thoroughly. Each child should then measure a 30 inch piece of yarn or fabric strip and tie a knot in each end. Using a hole punch put two holes in the top edge of the tin can directly across from each other. Attach the yarn or fabric strip just above the knot to the top of the windsock. Tie the other end of the yarn directly across from where the first knot was tied. Hang the wind sock from a pole or clothes line using the fabric loop. Craft Learning Activity: Rain Sticks (Grades K-5) Say: When the disciples were in the boat, a big storm came up and they were very scared. What did they do when they were scared? That s right they went to Jesus. We can go to Jesus and to God when we re afraid. We don t have to worry, because we can pray and God will help us. Let s make an instrument to help us remember that God will help us when we ask Him to. Materials: Paper towel roll for each student, toothpicks, contact paper, rice or beans Procedure: Help the children make rain sticks. Let the children poke the toothpicks into the sides of the paper towel roll. Place the contact paper at the bottom of the roll to close the opening. Pour some beans or rice into the roll and then cover the top with contact paper. You can cover the whole role to decorate it or let them color as there is time. As they tip the rain stick, the rice should hit the tooth-picks and sound like a rain stick. Sing songs about the lesson, rain, or the memory verse. Let students play their rain sticks as they sing. You might also do other rain related songs.

8 Craft Learning Activity: Sea Scenes (Grades 3-5) Materials: Bibles, mixing spoon, flour, salt, water, measuring cups, bowl, food coloring, sturdy cardboard, newspapers Preparation: Make a salt dough. Make one recipe for each group of five students. Mix 1 1/2 cups flour, 3/4 cup salt, and 3/4 cup water together in a bowl. Knead into a soft dough, adding water if needed. Divide the dough into four pieces and knead into each piece a different food coloring (blue, green, red, yellow). OR use play dough clay sticks from craft store. Procedure: Say: "What do you think it would be like to live near a lake? What would you see? What would you do? (Students tell ideas.) What scary thing happened on the Sea of Galilee in our lesson today? (There was a terrible storm.) What are some reasons people today might be afraid or worried when they are on a lake? (deep water; boat tipping over; unexpected thunderstorm, etc.) Let's make scenes out of dough that will remind us of how Jesus helps us when we are afraid." Divide the class into groups of no more than five. Give each group a piece of sturdy cardboard and newspaper to cover the work area. Ask: "How could you use the dough to show a storm on a lake?" Groups will mold a scene on cardboard showing what they think a storm on the Sea of Galilee would have looked like. (waves, boat, fish, seaweed, etc.) Have groups share the scenes they have created. Ask: "What would you want Jesus to do if you were in a storm or other scary situation? How might Jesus help you? (Give you courage. Help me think of a wise action. Provide someone to help me.) Snack Learning Activity: Celery or Banana Boats (Grades K-4) Use the snack to reenact the storm. Put instant pudding mix in a large plastic leak proof container. Tape it shut for added security. Pass the container around the class so each child has a turn of shaking it to make the pudding set. Enjoy the pudding! Option: Make celery or banana boat by adding cream cheese and raisins to celery or melted chocolate or peanut butter and marshmallows to bananas. Cut bananas in half and add a pretzel mast. Use frosting to attach a cracker sail. Life Application Challenge: Print the following pictures off the internet: a mean looking man; a person climbling a cliff, a night scene, a hypodermic needle, a tornado. Show the picture to the class one by one and ask the children to raise a hand if you think the picture show something scary. Then talk about how God could protect us if we faced the thing in the picure. Discuss fearful situations that your students face. Examples might be fear of the dark, fear of barking dogs; fear of snakes or spiders; fear of being alone; fear of being lost in a crowd; etc. Connect all of the situations to trusting God. For example: "God only gives us temptations we can bear. God is our safety rope. He in is control of all things and will not allow us to stumble. God is always with us so even at night we are not alone if we trust in God. God is our healer; we can depend on Him. Jesus is our shelter in the storm. Just like the disciples we can trust Him." Have children draw a picture of what they fear. At the upper right side of their picture have the students draw a cross with the words of the memory verse on it. Have them make dots from the cross to their picture. Encourage them to pray and ask God to help them overcome their fear. Repeat the memory verse: Psalm 46:1-2a "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear,"
