1 Mark your calendar: Aug : s/v Denis Sullivan in Racine Aug. 22: Hog & Dog Party Sept. 12: Blue Nose Regatta REEF POINT For the encouragement and promotion of yachting and the creation of a spirit of good fellowship (RYC Constitution, Article II) August 2015 Racine Yacht Club Commodore s Report Should I stay or should I go? Or more like should we continue this race or drop out? This year s HOOK Race challenged sailor s testament to patience. Approximately, half of the fleet chose to head in early as the winds were not cooperating. You might think the HOOK race was sailed on a Wednesday Night! Congratulations to Twister and crew for their outstanding overall win! A tremendous Thank You to Scott Lewis and his HOOK Committee for making this another fantastic RYC event! I would be remiss if I didn t pay homage to our incredible sponsor, Gosling s Black Seal Rum! What would life be like if it didn t get a little Dark and Stormy every once in a while? August is usually a very busy month for the Club, and this year is no exception. The Racine Regatta was one week earlier this year August 1st and 2nd and Bob Sample brought other yacht clubs into the action. Following that up was a visit from our friends in CRAW, Catamaran Racing Association of Wisconsin, who joined us for their regatta and fun on August 5th 9th. Their parties can get a little crazy. Those ABC, Anything But Clothes parties are awesome. But, then again, Racine Yacht Club really seems to enjoy crazy! Don t forget that the weekend of August 14th is the time to take to the water on Wisconsin s tall ship, the Denis Sullivan! I hope you have your tickets because they are almost gone! Don t be left out on this special event, If you have questions, get in touch with Staff Commodore, Charlie Manning. Last month, I was proud to represent Racine Yacht Club at Bayfield Race Week. If you have not sailed the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior, make a point to do so. It is a beautiful location to sail amongst the islands. With my shore crew, Amy, we towed Goombay Smash up to Bayfield, Wisconsin. Our first day of racing was abandoned due to strong thunderstorms that hit just after the start. Our first completed race was a windy day with winds up to 18 knots. We were given a course to sail a long windward leg to a mark, then take Basswood Island to port and round a mark at the opposite end of the island and finish in front of Bayfield. With my crew, Bob Tolefson, Mark Lendvay and his son Nate, we managed to pull away from the fleet with a decisive win. The second race was a patience killer as we sailed the entire course, only for the wind to die about a mile from the finish. Goombay was able to speed away from the competition in those light conditions to keep the lead for the series. It was on Thursday when the winds were more S2 7.9 weather. My S2 friends will understand. Moderate breeze and after a great Racine, Wisconsin Goombay Smashes the Fleet at Bayfield Race Week upwind to the top mark, the long downwind leg took its toll on us and the boats that could go dead downwind sailed on by. We took a 5th on that day which really tightened up the fleet. On the last day of racing, we saw the same conditions as the day before. I warned my crew that I would be a crabby skipper that day. We proceeded to have a great first leg and then hit the long downwind leg to the leeward mark. I watched my competition sail on by again. This is where my crew needed patience with me. Luckily the wind lightened and became very spotty. The crew and I kept our eyes outside the boat and found a breeze line along one of the islands. The entire fleet rounded the leeward mark within a ½ a boat length from each other. My main competition caught the wind first and built a 30 boat length lead. The wind was now light and shifty. We were patient and persistent to catch the shifts, lifts, and spot the wind lines without having to sail too much extra distance, In the last quarter mile, we were just behind the boat we needed to beat. With a couple of good tacks and starboard tack advantage near the finish, we crossed the line first to clinch first place overall, Wayzata Yacht Club puts on a first class event. In the past, racers travelled to other clubs for regattas much more than they do today, Make a point to get out there and visit other Clubs and venues, I guarantee when you come back, you will realize, as I have, there is no other place like Racine Yacht Club. Remember, it is always tropical in your mind!
