1 Dua a Sabah at Early Morning as taught by Imam Ali (asws) ibne Abi Talib (as) In the name of Allah the Beneficent, the Merciful حمي الرح ن الر ب س م اهلل bismillaahir-rah maanir-rah eem و آل ح م م د ح ل ع ىل م م د الله ص allaahumma s alli a laa muh ammadin w wa aali muh ammad O Allah! send your blessings on Muhammad and on the children of Muhammad ق ب ت لج ه ط ا م ن دل ع ل سان الصب اح ب ن ا لل ه ي alla humma yaaman dala'a lisaanas' s'a baah'e be nut'qe ta ballojehi Oh Allah, Oh He who extended the morning's tongue in the speech of its dawning, ل م ب غ اه ي ب تل ج ل ج ه المظ الل ي ل و ر ق ط ع س ح wasarrah'a qet'aa'l lailil muz'leme beghayaahebe talaj lojehi dispatched the fragments of the dark night into the gloom of its stammering, و ار ف م ق اد ير ب ج ه ن الف ل ك ال ت و أ ت ق ص نع wa atqana s'un a'l falakid dawwaare fee maqaa deere tabarrojehi made firm the structure of the turning spheres in the measures of its display ور ت أ ج ج ه ع ض ي الش م س ب ن اء و شع ش wa sha' sha'a z"eya-ash shaamse benoore ta ajjojehi and beamed forth the brightness of the sun through the light of its blazing! 1

2 Oh He who demonstrates His Essence by His Essence, transcends congeniality with His creatures ي ا م ن د ل ع ىل ذ ات ه ب ذ ات ه yaaman dalla a'laa d'aatehi be d'aa tehi م خل وق ات ه ج ن م ان س ة ه ع ز و تن watanazzah a'n mujaanasate makh looqaatehi و ج ل ات ه ن م ئ م ة ك ي ف ي ال ع wajalla a'n mula amate kaifiy yaatehi and is exalted beyond conformity with His qualities! Oh He who is near to the passing thoughts of opinions, far from the sight of eyes and knows what will be before it comes to be! ون ن خط ر ات الظن ر م ي ا م ن ق ب yaa man qaro ba min khat'raatiz' z'unoone ون العي ع ن ل حظ ات د و بع wa bao'da a'n lah'az'aatil oyoone ي كون ب ل أ ن ب م ا ك ان ق و ع ل م wa a'lema bemaa kaana qabla ayn ya koo na وأ م ان ه ي ا م ن أ ر ق د ن ف م ه اد أ م ن ه yaa man arqa dani fee me haade am nehi wa amaanehi Oh He who has put me at ease in the cradle of His security and sanctuary, ن ه و إ حس ان ه حن ي ب ه م ن م ن ما من و أ ي ق ظ ن ي إ ل wa ayqaz'ani ilaa maa mana h'ani behi min menanehi wa eh' saanehi awakened me to the favors and kindness that He has bestowed upon me 2

3 ط ان ه وسل ي د ه عن ي ب و ك ف أ كف الس وء wa kaffa akuffas sooe a'nni beyadehi wa sult'aa nehi and held me from the claws of evil with His Hand and His Sultan! Bless, oh Allah, the guide to You in the darkest night, ص ل الل ه ع ىل األ لي ل الل ي ل ال ل يل إ ل ي ك ف s'alle allaahumma a'lad daleele ilaika fil lailil alyale األ طو ل ال ش ف ب اب ك ب ح ب ل و الم اس ك م ن أ س wal maa seke min asbaabeka beh'ablish sharafil at' wale him who, of Your ropes, clings to the cord of the longest nobility, األ عب ل روة الك اه ل ع الحس ب ف ذ و الن اص wan naas'ei'l h'asabe fee d'arwatil kaahelil aa'bale him whose glory is evident at the summit of stout shoulders ل م ن األ و و الث اب ت الق د م ع ىل ز ح ال يف ه ا ف الز wa thaabetil qadame a' laa zah'aaleefeha fiz zamanil awwale and whose feet were entrenched in spite of slippery places in ancient time; األ بر ار المصط ف ي ار األ خي و ع ىل آ ل wa a'laa aalehil akh yaaril must'a fainal abraare and bless his household, the good, the chosen, the pious, يع الصب اح ب م ف ة ات يح الرح والف ال ح ل ن ا مص ار ت ح الل ه و اف waftah'ahe alla humma lanaa ma s'aaria's' s'abaah'e bemafaatehir rah' mate walfalaah'e And open for us, oh Allah, the leaves of morning's door with the keys of mercy and prosperity! و الصال ح د اي ة ض ل خ ل ع ال و أ لب س ن ي الل ه م ن أ ف wa albisni allaahumma min afz"ale khila-i'l hidaayate was' s'alaa h'e Clothe me, oh Allah, with the most excellent robes of guidance and righteousness! 3

4 اب يع الخش وع ا ن ين س اغ الل ه ب ع ظ م ت ك ف ش ر ب جن و wagh rese alla humma be a'z' mateka fee shirbe janaani yanaa beea'l khoshoo-e' Plant, oh Allah, through Your tremendousness, the springs of humility in the watering place of my heart! وع الم ن آم اق ي زف ر ات و أ ج ر الل ه ل ي ب ت ك م wa ajre allaahumma lehai bateka min amaa qi zafaraatid dumooe' Cause to flow, oh Allah, because of Your awesomeness, tears of sorrow from the corner of my eyes! وع و أ د ب الل ه ز ن ق الخر ق م ن ي ب أ ز م ة القن wa addib alla humma nazaqal khurqe minni be azzim matil qunoo e' And chastise, oh Allah, the recklessness of my clumsiness with the reins of contentment! م نك ب حس ن الت وف ي ق ن ي الر ح إ ل ئ ة ت بت د ه ي إ ن ل م ilaahi inllam tabta dei' nir rah' mato minka beh'usnit tau feeqe My Allah, if mercy from You does not begin with fair success for me, then who can take me to You upon the clear path? إ ل ي ك ف و اض ح الط ر يق ف م ن الس ال ك ب fa manis saa leko bi ilai ka fee waaz" eh'it' t'a reeqe ى الم ن ات ك ل ق ائ د ا ل م تن ي أ ن إ ن أ س أل م ل و و wa in aslamatni anaatoka le qaaedil amale walmunaa If Your patience would turn me over to the guide of hope and wishes, و ى ر ا ت م ن ك بو ات ال عث ف م ن الم ق يل fama nil moqeelo a'tha raati min kabawaatil hawa then who will annul my slips from the stumbles of desire? م ارب ة الن ف س و الش ي ط ان ر ك ع ند ح ص خ ذ ل ن ي ن و إ ن wain khad'a lani nas'roka i'nda muh'aarabatin nafse wash shait'aa ne If Your help should forsake me in the battle with the soul and Shaitan, 4

5 ر م ان الن ص ب والح ذال ن ك إ ل ح ي ث ف ق و د ك ل ن ي خ faqad wa kalani khid'laanoka ilaa h'aithun nas'abe wal h'irmaane then Your forsaking will have entrusted me to where there is hardship and deprivation. اآلما ل إ ل ه ر ا ن ما ي أ ت ن ح ي ث ك إ ال م يت أ ت ilaahi ataraa ni maaataitoka illa min h'aithul amaale My Allah, do You see that I have only come to You from the direction of hope ع ن د ار ال ا ل تن ي ذ ن و ب ب ال ك إ ال ح ي باع د أ م ع ل قت ب أ ط ر اف ح و ص am a'liqto beat'raafe h'ibaaleka illa h'eena ba'aadatni d'unoobi a'n daaril wes'aale or clung to the ends of Your ropes when my sins have driven me from the house of union? اها هو امتط ت ن ف س ي م ن ة ال ت ي ف ب ئ س ط ي الم fabesal mat'iy yatullati am tat'at nafsi min hawaha So what an evil mount upon which my soul has mounted - its desires! اها ن ا وم ون ظ ن ول ت ل ا ل ما س ف و اه ا ل ا fawaa han laha lema saw walat laha z'unoo noha wamunaaha Woe upon it for being seduced by its own opinions and wishes! ال ها ها ومو ا ع ىل سي د ل جر أ ت و تب ا ل ا wata bban laha lejur ateha a'laa sayye deha wamaulaha And destruction be upon it for its audacity toward its Master and Protector! إ ل ه عت رجائ ي ي ق ر ب ي د ب ح ر ت ك اب ilaahi qaraa'to baaba rah'mateka beyade rajaai My Allah, I have knocked upon the door of Your mercy with the hand of my hope, fled to You seeking refuge from my excessive desires و ه ر بت إ ل ي ك ال ج ئ ا م ن ف ر ط أ هوائ ي waharabto ilaika laajean min fart'e ahwaai 5

6 ام ل و ال ئ ي ب ال ك أ ن ع ل قت ب أ ط ر اف ح و wa a'l laqto be at'rafe h'ibaa leka anaamela wala-i and fixed the fingers of my love to the ends of Your ropes. خط ائ ي ز ل ل و م ن ه أ ج ر مت ف اص ف ح الل ه ع ما كنت fas'fah'e allaahumma a'm ma kunto ajramtohu min zalali wa khat'aai So pardon, oh Allah, the slips and errors I have committed and release me from the foot-tangling of my robe ن ص ر ع ة ر دائ ي ن ي م و أ ق ل wa aqleni min s'ar-a'ate redaai ي و رجائ ي م ت د ي وال ي م و ع م ف إ ن ك سي د و fa in naka sayyedi wa maulaaya wa mo'tamadi waraj aai For You are my Master, my Protector, my Support and my Hope م ل ب ي ثواي غ اي ت م أ ن ف نق و و م ن اي ل و ب ة م ط و wa anta ghaayato matloobi wa monaaya fee mun qalabi wamathwaaya and You are the object of my search and my desire in my ultimate end and stable abode. ه ار ب ا م ن الن وب س ج ك ين ا الت أ رد م ط إ ل ه ي ك يف ت إ ل ي ك ilaahi kaifa tat'rudo miskee nan iltajaa ilaika menad' d'unoo bi haa reban My Allah, how could You drive away a poor beggar who seeks refuge in You from sins, fleeing? ن اب ك س اع ي ا ش د ا ق ص د إ ل ج ي مس ت خ ب أ م ك يف ت am kaifa to khayyebo mustar shedan qasa da ilaa janaa beka saae'yan Or how could You disappoint one seeking guidance who seeks Your threshold, running? ح ي ك ش ار ب ا اض مآن ورد إ ل أ م ك يف ت رد ظ am kaifa taruddo z'amaa nan warada ilaa h'eyaa z"eka shaareban Or how could You turn away a thirsty man who has come to Your pools, drinking 6

7 ع ة ف ضنك الم حول ت اض ح ي ك م و ك ال kal la wa h'eyaaz"oka mutra-a'atun fee z"an kil mah'oole Never! For Your pools are full in the hardship of drought, Your door is open for seeking and penetration وح ل لط ل ب و الو غ ول و اب م فت ب ك wabaa boka maftooh'un lit' t'alabe wal wughoole م و ن اية ول المأ ؤ ول و أ نت غ اية المس wa anta ghaayatul mas-oole wa nehaa yatul maamoole and You are the goal of requests and the object of hopes. ت ك تا ب ع ق ال م ش ي ي ع ق ل ن ف س إ ل هي ه ذ ه أ ز مة ilahi haad'ehi azim mato nafsi a'qaltoha be i'qaale masheey yate ka My Allah, these are the reins of my soul I have bound them with the ties of Your will. ت ك ورح ك تا ب عف و رأ أ ع باء ذ ن و ب د و ه ذ ه wa haad'ehi aa'baao d'unoobi da raatoha be a'fweka wa rah'mateka These are the burdens of my sins I have averted them with Your pardon and mercy. ف ك ر و أف ت ك اب ل ط تا إ ل جن و ه ذ ه أ ه وائ ي الم ض ل و ك ل wa haad'ehi ahwaaeyal muz"illato wa kaltoha ilaa janaabe lut'feka waraa fateka And these are my desires that lead astray - I have entrusted them to the threshold of Your gentleness and kindliness. د ى اء ي ال ال ع ل ب ض از ص ب ا ح ه ذ ا ن ف اج ع ل الل ه faj-a'le alla humma s'abaah'i haa d'a naazelan a'layya be z"iyaail huda So make this morning of mine, oh Allah, descend upon me with the radiance of guidance, and with safety in religion and this world! السال م ة ف و ي ا والن ال ين was salaamate fid deene waddunya 7

8 ن مسائ ي ج ة م ن ك ي د الع د ى و wamasaai junnatan min kaidil aa'da And make my evening a shield against the deception of enemies and a protection against the destructive blows of desire! و ى ي ات ال و و ق اي ة م ن م ر د waweqaa yatan min murdeyaatil hawa اء إ نك ق اد ر ع ىل م ا ت ش innaka qaadiron a'laa maa tashaao Verily You are able over what You will! ك م م ن ت ش اء مل تنز ع ال ك م ن ت ش و اء المل ت ؤ ت tootil mulka man tash aao wa tanzeu'l mul ka mimman tashaao You give the kingdom to whom You will, and You seize the kingdom from whom You will; م ن ت ش اء و ت ع ز م ن ت ش و اء ت ذ ل wa toi'zzo man tashaao wa tod'illo man tashaao You exalt whom You will, and You abase whom You will; in Your hand is the good; You are powerful over all things. الخي ب ي د ك beyadekal khairo إ ن ك ع ىل كل ش ء ق د ير innaka a'laa kulle shayyin qadeer ف الل ي ل الل ي ل ف ال ن ار ول ج وت ال ن ار ول ج ت toolejul laila finnahaa re wa toolejun nahaa ra fil laile You make the night to enter into the day, and You make the day to enter into the night; 8

9 ج ي م الح ن ت ن المي ت وت خ ر الم و ت ر خ ج الح م wa tukhrejul h'ayya minal mayyete wa tukhrejul mayyeta minal h'ayye You bring forth the living from the dead, and You bring forth dead from the living; ر ز ق م ن ت ش اء ب غ س ي ح اب و ت wa tar zoqo man tashaao beghaire h'isaabin and You provide whomsoever You will without accountability. There is no god but You! Glory be to You, oh Allah, and Thine is the praise! Who knows Your measure without fearing You? Who knows what You are without awe of You? ال إ ل ه إ ال أ نت la ilaaha illa anta بح ان ك الل ه و ب ح م د ك س subh' aanaka allaahumma wa be h'amdeka ن ذ ا ي ع ف ق د ر ك ف ال ي خ اف ك م man d'aa ya'refo qadraka falaa yakhafoka ت ف ال ك ياب و ن ذ ا ي عل م ما أ ن م wa man d'a ya'lamo maa anta falaa yahaa boka Through Your power You have joined contrasting things, through Your gentleness You have cleaved apart the daybreak قد ر ت ك ر الف ق أ ل ف ت ب allafta bequd ratekal firaqa و ف ل ق ت ب ل طف ك الف ل ق wafalaqta belut' fekal falaqa 9

10 الغ س ق و أ ن ر ت ر ب ك م ك د ي ا ج wa anarta bekara meka dayaa jeyal ghasaqe and through Your generosity You have illumined the dark shrouds of night. ع ذب ا وأ ج اج ا ي م ن الص م اخ الصي يد اه و أ ن ر ت الم wa an hartal meyaaha mi nas' s'ummis' s'ayaakhee de a'd'ban wa ujaajan You have made waters, sweet and salt flow forth from hard shining stones, sent down out of rain-clouds water cascading الم ع ص زلت م و ن أ ن ماء ث ج اج ا ر ات wa anzalta minal mo' s'eraate maa thajjaa jan ر اج ا و ه اج ا ة س ل لب ي م س والق م ر ت الش و جعل waja-a'lta sh sham sa wal qa mara lil bariy yate siraajan wahhaajan and appointed the sun and moon a blazing lamp for the creatures, ت ب ه ل غ وب ا وال ع ال ج ا س ا ابت د أ ف يم ي أ ن ت م ار ن غ م min ghaire an tumaa resa feemaabtada-ta behi loghoo ban walaa i'laajan without experiencing in that which You originated either weariness or effort. So, oh He who is alone in might and subsistence and dominates His slaves with death and annihilation, ز و ت ح د ب الع و ف ي ا من الب ق اء faya- man tawah' h'ada bil i'zze walbaqaae و ق ه ر اء و ت والف ن اد ب ه ب الم ع wa qahara i'baadaho bilmaute wal fanaa-e اء األ ت ق ي و آ ل ح م م د ل ع ىل ص s'alle a'laa muh'am madin wa aalehil atqeyaae Bless Muhammad (saw)and His Household (asws), the Pious, 10

11 answer my supplication hear my call, and actualize through Your bounty my hope and desire. Oh best of those who is called to remove affliction and object of hope in every difficulty and ease! I have stated my need, ورجائ ي ع ن د ائ ي و اس was ma' nidaai ع ب د ائ ي است ج و was tajib dua'ai و حق ق ب ف ض ل ك أ م ل wa h'aqqeq befaz" leka a'mali wara jaai ل ك ش ف الض ر ن د ع ي ي م خ ي ا yaa khaira man doe'ya lekashfiz" z"ur re ع س و ي س م ل ك ل و ول المأ wal maamoole lekulle u'srin wa yusrin ح اجت ي ب ك أ نزلت bekaa anzalto h'aajati ن سن ي مو اه ب ك خائ ب ا ف ال ت رد ن م falaa tarud dani min sannie mawaahebeka khaa eban so do not reject me, oh my master, despairing of Your exalted gifts. Oh All-generous! Oh All-generous! Oh All-generous! مي يا ك ر مي يا ك ر مي يا ك ر yaa kareemo yaa kareemo yaa ka reemo 11

12 By Your mercy, oh Most Merciful of the merciful! ح الر اح م يا أ ر ت ك ح ر ب ي be rah'mateka yaa arh'amar raah'e meen. ع و آ ل أ ج ي ق ه ح م م د خ ي خ ل ع اهلل ىل ص و ىل wa s'al lallaaho a'laa khaire khalqehi muh'amma din wa aalehi ajmaa' eena And Allah bless the best of His creatures, Muhammad (saw), and all His Household (asws) Then prostrate and say: My Allah, my heart is veiled, my soul deficient my intelligence defeated my desires triumphant, my obedience little, my disobedience much إ ل وب حج لب ي م هي ق ilaahi qalbee mah'joo bun وب عي ي م ف س و ن wa nafsee ma' yoobun و ع ق ل م غل وب wa a'qlee maghloobun غ ال ب و هوائ ي wa ha waai ghaalebun و ط اعت ي ق ل يل wa t'aa'ati qalee lun ي ك ث ي ت ي و م ع ص wa ma's'eyati kathee run 12

13 and my tongue acknowledges sins. So what am I to do? Oh He who covers defects! Oh He who knows the unseen things! Oh He who removes calamaties و ل س ا ن ق م ر ب الن وب wa lisaani muqerrun bid'd'unoo be س ار وب يل ت ي يا ت العي ف ك ي ف ح fakaifa h'eelati yaa sattaarul u'yoobe وب و ا ال الغ ي ي ع م wa yaa a'llaamal gho yoobe ي و ا ك اش ف الك ر وب wa yaa kaa shefal kuroobe و آل ح م م د ح ر م ة ح م م د اغ ف ر ذ ن و ب كل ها ب ighfir d'unoobi kullaha be h'urmate muh'am madin wa aale mu h'ammadin Forgive my sins, all of them, by the sacredness of Muhammad (saw) and the Household of Muhammad (asws)! Oh All-forgiver! Oh All-forgiver! Oh All-forgiver! By Your mercy, oh Most Merciful of the merciful! يا غ ف ار ي ا غ ف ار ي ا غ ف ار yaa ghaf faaro yaa ghaf faaro yaa ghaf faaro ح الر اح م يا أ ر ت ك ح ر ب ي. be rah'ma teka yaa arh'amar raah'emeen 13
