Commodore s Message If there is one event that creates fear and trepidation in the hearts of yacht club members, it is Sailpast (aka Opening Day). Pomp, ceremony, unwritten and seemingly bizarre rules only a few seem to understand all stuff I go boating to get away from. At least, that was what I thought until I finally gave it a shot, and have not missed an EHYC Sailpast since. While Opening Day for many of the big clubs are all that, Eagle Harbour Yacht Club s Sailpast really is different. I would like to emphasize the line in the Year Book description of the event which states it is more important for members to attend than be deterred by a requirement of formal dress. Believe it. My practice is to come dressed reasonably close via a pair of white pants and a jacket that is vaguely close to blue which puts me about in the middle of the pack. Some members show off some very nice formal attire and look great, others are there enjoying the day in their usual jeans and sweat shirts (take a look at the Yearbook photos if you have any doubts). Remember Eagle Harbour is the friendliest little yacht club in the West, not the most formal. Routine of the day is similarly relaxed. While sailboats line up (largest to smallest following the Fleet Captain) and salute* the Commodore first, then the power vessels (largest to smallest following the Staff Captain) take their turn, every year there are exceptions and no one ever seems to get too hung up on those. As a former Staff Captain (leading the power vessels), there always seemed to be some sailing vessel finding its way behind me (certainly could not have been my fault). The member who saluted the West Van Commodore one year may be an exception, as he has yet to live that down. (*the salute often being more of a hearty wave) The final selling point to Sailpast is free food (not booze) and music. This is an event hosted by the Club. Other important business: Thanks to Past Commodore Les Johnson for representing the Club in a delegation to West Van Council (alongside other yacht clubs and marinas). The delegation succeeded in having a proposed by-law, which would have had significant negative consequences to the Club, referred for further study. Also, please check out the EHYC website. If you have forgotten your login, the system is: username is your first initial and last name (i.e., rmcfarlane) password is currently ehycxxxx, where XXXX is your fourdigit member number (see the Vice Commodore s report for a detailed explanation). Vice Commodore Marg Latham and a number of other members have put a significant amount of time and effort into upgrading the site, and we would appreciate you taking a look and providing your comments. Robert McFarlane Commodore 3

VICE COMMODORE S REPORT One of the main areas of responsibility for the Vice Commodore is the shore side facilities. This includes the grounds, which are very well looked after by the Landscape Committee under the care of Margaret Campbell. It also includes the Clubhouse, which is periodically inspected by the House/Interior Committee, chaired by Rob Haslam. Maintenance issues that arise are well handled by Collen and the volunteer contingents for work parties. Many thanks to all who have volunteered and continue to volunteer to make EHYC a success. You will see all of the EHYC Committees in the 2014 Yearbook. Hopefully, by now you have had the chance to visit the new EHYC website launched earlier this year. We have had a few bumps in the road and appreciate your patience. Many thanks to Nancy for finding and resolving the issues when they arise. One area that we would like to address is the member-only area, which requires an ID and password to access. We know that for some this seems like an imposition. There are well-thought-out reasons why we wish to have some items remain private to members. Please ask an Executive member or Nancy if you have any questions in this regard. We want to encourage all members to be comfortable with using the member-only area. To help and encourage its use, we are repeating the instructions for IDs and passwords and holding a contest. Here s how to get into the member-only area: Go to and click on the link, labelled Members Login in the upper right-hand corner. Your username for logging on is your first initial and then your last name. For example, Jane Doe, would be jdoe. The password, unless you have already changed yours, is ehycxxxx, where XXXX is your member number (Active and Non Resident members have the preceding 0, so 0545; Associate members have the preceding A, so A021, Retired members have the preceding R, so R545.) You can change the password to whatever you desire, but if you forget it, Nancy won t know it and she will have to give you a new one and re-set your login. You cannot change your username. The Contest In the spirit of fun and to encourage you to login, Nancy will be sending out three questions to all members that can only be answered by visiting the member-only area. The first 10 members who login to the member-only area and find and submit to Nancy the correct answers to the questions, will be able to choose an article of clothing from our last year s inventory. Look for her the week after Soundings is published. In the meantime, try out your ID and password so that you can quickly find your way around the pages. As others have mentioned, the sailing season will be starting with Sailpast on May 10th. This will be the first Sailpast in which I have skippered our boat, Aqua Libra. Come out and enjoy the day even if is a first for you too. Marg Latham Aqua Libra REAR COMMODORE S REPORT Floats Docks number 3. 4 and 1A have received major structural work and upgrading. Decking on all docks has been replaced as needed and this is ongoing as required. Divers have installed the last two chains. The work was originally scheduled for Fall 2014 but time and personnel were available so the decision was made to do them early. 4

Breakwater The tanks were checked and sounded and found to be in good shape. There is one small crack on the breakwater deck that will be repaired when welding is available. The two manhole covers need to be serviced and made water tight to reduce the possibility of corrosion. The hatches also need to be securely locked as the chambers are considered a confined space. They should not be entered without proper preparations in accordance with Worksafe BC regulations governing confined spaces. The three inside chains have been replaced; these are the last of the original chains. The work was completed in one day with no major problems. Electrical Several boats have reported they are receiving Reverse Polarity readings. The outlets in question have been checked with a polarity meter along with the wiring and no faults have been found. There have been reports that the battery chargers installed on some of the newer boats may be giving false polarity readings. A couple of new electrical outlets were installed to provide power to areas of the float that were lacking coverage. Moorage Space Nine vessels have left and seven vessels have come in. We currently have two small spaces suitable for power boats; however our total revenue from moorage has not been affected. Work Parties All those who participated in our joy through work work parties deserve a special thank you for a job well done. Without your help the docks would not be in the great condition they are. Glen Blake Balaena FLEET CAPTAIN S REPORT Let s start this article with the most recent event - the EHYC Invitational Race held on April 13, The Invitational is held in the Spring of each year and combines our event into the four-race series Spring Quartet at Bowen Island Yacht Club. This year the weather was superb a warm sunny day, with a good northerly outflow forecast to shift to an inflow at high noon! Turns out Environment Canada got it right, and that s exactly how it turned out! All of the yachts registered in the Spring Quartet series came over to race with us, which included EHYC yachts Merlin and Nunnehi, and three more yachts from EHYC registered for the day - Champagne Charlie, Moonshadow II, and American Eagle rounded out the fleet. Scheduled for twice around Bird Rock then Passage Island, happily the forecasted shift didn t create long-term doldrums behind Passage, and the whole fleet was back at the docks in just over three hours. Collen had prepared a very welcome BBQ, and a good time was had by all on the Clubhouse deck afterwards. I would like to acknowledge and thank the race committee: Jenny Elliott, Olivia Mitchell, Jake Lan, and the very experienced captain for the day on Eagle Tender, David Santer. Although Dave Wilson and the mighty Merlin crossed the line first, they corrected to second behind the new hot rod from WVYC Davo, a Davidson 29 skippered by Ty Abrams. Bruce Winfield and his crew on Nunnehi corrected to 6th overall; followed by Frank Astbury on Champagne Charlie; Andrew Crane on Moonshadow II; and Dean Eilertson on American Eagle. This was my first Invitational. I have a few ideas to make it a little more interesting for next year and hopefully attract a few more participants from EHYC. One thing we talked about on the Committee Boat was a shorter second leg for the Division B yachts so everyone gets back to the Clubhouse closer to the same time. Here are the dates of the other three major fleet racing events at EHYC for Mark your calendars now! EHYC Single Handed Race - Sunday, June 22, 2014 EHYC Double Handed Race - Sunday, August 24, 2014 EHYC Club Championship - Sunday, October 19, 2014 Looking back a couple of months, I should recap the final results for the WVYC Snowflake Series: in the Before Christmas segment, Andre Wojciezek and crew on Radical Departure finished 2nd in the ORC Fleet. Dave Wilson and crew on Merlin finished 3rd in Div 2. In Div 3, Bruce Winfield and crew on Nunnehi finished 6th, and your Fleet Captain and crew on Grey Erik finished 7th. In the After Christmas segment, Radical Departure took 2nd again, Merlin s crew went skiing, Grey Erik finished 5th, and Nunnehi finished 7th. The last race certainly lived up to the name of 5

the series - gusts to 40 at Pam Rocks that morning, lots of snowflakes, and some gear damage. I know on Grey Erik we suffered a bent ring on the mast end of the spinnaker pole, the turning block for the spinnaker guy exploded, and our masthead fly must have decided to fly south for the winter a bit late! Radical Departure had their own issues after the race had finished, and I m sure there are other equally exciting stories from the other participants! Grey Erik s crew participating in the WVYC Snowflake Race. By the time this Soundings is published, Southern Straits will be in the books for another year. WVYC do a spectacular job of this race, now in its 46th year. Merlin is registered for the medium-distance course while Nunnehi is registered for the new Inshore course that runs from Dundarave, around Bowyer Island, and back to Point Atkinson. The new website seems to be working well now. I have posted all of the VARC races and other non-varc ones in which I understand some of the Club boats have participated over the years. Please send me an if you see any I have left out and I ll make sure they are posted. Of particular interest is the BIYC sponsored Round Bowen race on Saturday, June 14th. Grab a few friends and c mon out for this one. Don t worry about the start if you don t race much - everyone starts at once, and it s the longest start line I have ever seen! No marks to round - just one big island! BIYC host a spectacular after party, jamming everyone into Snug Cove in the world s largest raft-up! Volunteers Needed Please consider volunteering to help with the following activities to support the Fleet events. I know I have responsibilities as Fleet Captain, however I like to race my boat as much as I can. We need race committees for all three of the above EHYC noted events. Also, I would really appreciate a volunteer with either a sailboat or powerboat to set a mark off Cape Roger Curtis on Bowen Island on Saturday, June 7th. It needs to be set in the morning and retrieved later in the afternoon after the yachts have rounded it. They will be heading for Nanaimo in the RNSA Single-Handed Race. EHYC had a number of entries in this race last year, and setting the turning mark has been one of the tasks we have agreed to do to support the race organization. Please or phone me if you can contribute to any of these volunteer needs. Safety Day Finally, just a reminder that our Club Safety Day will be held this year on Saturday, May 3rd. It s a great opportunity to check your yacht for current, working order, legally and practically required safety equipment before the main boating season begins. See the website for timing and activities as the date draws closer. 7 EHYC INVITATIONAL - APRIL 13,

STAFF CAPTAIN S REPORT Sailpast Saturday May 10, 2014 This year s Sailpast marks the tenth anniversary of the official opening of our Clubhouse and I would like to encourage all members to participate whether you own a power boat, sail boat, row boat, kayak or no boat at all. If you need a ride on a boat in order to join in the parade, talk to fellow members on the docks (most are happy to have others join them) or let me know and I will do my best to find you a berth. Don t be daunted by the fact that there is a dress code. Eagle Harbour YC is not really known for its formality (just look at the photographs in the Yearbooks). What matters is getting together to mark the beginning of a new boating season, meeting other Club members and enjoying a celebration with good food, drink and music. If you are not sure how the parade of boats is organized you will find a description in the Yearbook and then you can compare that with what actually happens! It s a fun day. And after the partying winds down in the Club it generally continues on the boats. Come and join us. Supercruise Saturday May 17 to Monday May 19 (Victoria Day) By popular demand we shall head, as we did last year, to Otter Bay Marina on North Pender Island. Several of us who were able to get away on the Friday last year had a rendezvous on the mooring buoys in Montague Harbour leaving ourselves just a very short sail to Otter Bay the next morning. Not everyone can do that, but if you can it makes for a relaxing start to the weekend. At Otter Bay you will find excellent facilities not only showers and washrooms but two swimming pools, a shop/ café/ office, and a delightful space the Gazebo in which we can have our meals, play games, and entertain ourselves. There is also a grassy area outside the gazebo that is ours to use for the weekend. Everything is very orderly and sparkling clean and Charlene and Jess Mansley who manage the Marina are welcoming and extremely helpful. In the immediate vicinity there is plenty to do. Fancy a game of golf? Pender Island Golf and Country Club is just a short distance away and Jess will take you there. Across the bay is Roesland Park with a short walk out to a beautiful point from which you may even be able to a do some whale watching, and a longer trail takes you up to a Roes Lake. Jess allows guests to rent one of his minivans if you want to drive for ten minutes and visit the pub at Port Browning or the shops at the recently completed Driftwood Centre. Or you can use the Car Stop system and catch a ride with a local at any of the designated spots along the road. On the Saturday evening we will have a potluck dinner that we provide ourselves. Details later. Sunday morning we have breakfast prepared by the Commodore and his partner (this year Rob and Kathleen McFarlane). Sunday evening we have a meal prepared by Stephan, the resort s chef. Here s the menu: Starter: Caribbean Seafood Pan Prawns, vegetables coconut milk, vegetables and spices. Absolutely delicious! Main: Choice of Roast Beef slow-cooked on barbecue Or: Halibut Filet cooked with lemon-garlic butter. Both accompanied by garlic mashed potatoes and Caesar Salad. Dessert - with coffee or tea. Price: $ Wines: Very reasonably priced. SO if you are coming PLEASE LET ME KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Contact me at bajaelliott@shaw.ca Brian Elliott Bohemian Girl 8

JUNIOR COORDINATOR S REPORT After a quiet winter period, things at the Junior Club are starting to warm up. In the next month we will have the Junior Awards Night (long overdue), Boat Wash, and Sailpast. The award winners will be published in the next issue of Soundings. The Boat Wash sign-up sheet is posted on the Club notice board. Remember to specify any special requirements. In late May, we will start getting the boats and docks ready and have supervised sailing on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm. We have recently ordered two new Flying Junior dinghies and two new Optimist dinghies. The Flying Juniors are the first phase of our plan to phase out the Pirates over the next few years and the Optimists bring our total boats to eight, which will allow each Wet Feet student a chance to sail their own boat during lessons. We launched our Sailing School booking system in late February and some sessions are already full. Please publicize the courses amongst your neighbours and friends. We will have a number of Gift of Sailing students again this year, thanks to our new sponsor. Our head coach is Chris Wilson and he will be supported by returning coaches Connor Stanton, Liz Chung, and Devon Copeland. We also have a number of new coaches joining us this year. Stuart Argo and Ellie Beveridge will be sharing the office administrative duties. Lastly, I also want to welcome several new Junior members to the Club and we hope that they will be able to join us soon for some social functions and sailing Selin Gul, Kaysen and Mchale Haines, Jennifer and Jeffrey Huang, and Andrew and Jeffrey MacGregor. Here s to a great summer of sailing and fun. Callum Beveridge Good winds and bright (if temporary) sunshine accompanied EHYC s Merlin to the hectic start line of the Southern Straits race on Good Friday. 9

SOCIAL DIRECTOR S REPORT On the last weekend of March, we were treated to a Slow- Smoked Pork BBQ with all the southern trimmings, courtesy of Jonn and Jennie Braman. Jonn s recipe is published in this Soundings. If you did not attend, I would thoroughly recommend you try the recipe to see why everyone is raving about it. However, it takes a while and there is no point in rushing it slow roast all afternoon as Jonn did. I would like to pay tribute to Jonn for stepping forward and volunteering to do this. He talks about offering a North African Beef BBQ next year. In mid-april we held the Anniversary Dinner, which was attended by over 90 members. This year the focus of this dinner was to celebrate the commissioning of the new Clubhouse. Al Lill and Burke Corbet spoke of the huge effort by Club members to make this happen. Morgan Gatto who designed the building stepped forward to accept the applause of the members present. Chester Spink spoke for many members in remembering the camaraderie created by working together with fellow members. Those of us who joined after 2004 would want to join me in thanking everyone involved in the project. A new feature on the social scene is draft beer courtesy of a nanobrewery: North Vancouver Bridge Brewery. They have kindly donated the fridge and tap to dispense the beer. This came about because one of the principals, Leigh Stratton, has fond memories of Eagle Harbour Yacht Club from early days of sailing with the Juniors. This addition has been well received by members at the last two events. The beer is fresh and made right here in North Vancouver. We plan to have two types of draft beer available, in addition to the normal selection of cans or bottles. The next significant event is Sailpast. Rob Weaver, who entertained us last year with his jazz band, returns this year. He and his quartet played at the Anniversary Dinner and they were much appreciated. As we move into summer, please look out for notices for BBQs or Fireside evenings. Sometimes these have to be rescheduled. The best source of information going forward will be the website. We have a very special Fireside on the last weekend in May when we will have a guitarist and singer who will sing the old favorites and encourage participation. But no worries if, like me, you don t sing: it is going to be fun anyway. In June we hope to have a visit from a British teen singer who will be visiting the U.S. to open for the group Haim in Seattle. I wonder if we could attract some of the young to attend? More on this later. 12 SOUTHERN BBQ RECIPES Volunteering to do the slow-smoked pulled-pork BBQ has given me a real appreciation of the amount of work Tim and Rosie do leading the Social Committee. And how a having few folk stepping up to organize tables, serve and clear (and a multitude of other tasks I didn t have a chance to notice) makes for a smooth-running event. I confess I hadn t given that part of an event any thought, so I am really grateful others did. I was pretty confident about my recipes, but very nervous about how much food would be needed to feed a large group. When I volunteered, I had envisioned a couple of dozen people. As Tim gave me regular updates on the RSVPs, my anxiety increased. As it turned out, sixty was the maximum our home stovetop and all of our pots could accommodate (and then only by doing some of the dishes in advance). The back stories include completely burning one of the roasts (thanks for the last-minute replacement, Jennie) and nearly burning down the Clubhouse (thanks for saving the day, Tim). Clearly it takes a team to pull off an event like this! Thank you all. Jonn Braman Pulled Possum This recipe works on 1.2 kg to 2.0 kg (2-1/2 to 4 lbs) of pork shoulder. It probably would work with road-kill possum, beaver or racoon - if you get a chance to try that, let me know. I used boneless shoulders to save space, but bone-in is supposed to impart greater flavour. Two small roasts are better than one big one (more rub & crust area). The sugar in the rub offsets the heat of the chili and cayenne, so don t be afraid of using them (or more). And the sugar is important for the caramel flavour! On board your boat, you may want to use it on pork RIBS. To do this you need to trim some fat off, cut them in portions, apply rub, individually wrap in foil and refrigerate (at home maybe?). Then cook in foil FIRST (low temp and slow) and brown as a last step! 2-1/2 to 4 lbs pork shoulder 1/8 cup cane sugar 1 tsp salt 1-1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds 2 tsp mustard powder 1/2 tsp chili crushed peppers 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper 1/2 tsp allspice berries 1/2 tsp thyme 1/2 tsp smoked paprika 1/2 tsp ground black pepper Grind the sugar with the spices (I use a small electric coffee grinder) to create a fine rub that absorbs nicely into the meat. Rub the mixture generously and deep in the crevices. I use latex gloves as the chili and cayenne will burn your eyes when you inevitably rub them too! Wrap the pork in plastic (or foil) and refrigerate at least 2 hours (overnight works well). Then you can either smoke it at low temperature for 2-4 hours on the BBQ or proceed straight to browning it. The BBQ works well for browning, but an oven on broil or a hot frying pan can do the job. The idea is to build a brown crust on all sides of the meat, caramelizing the sugar. The final step takes the longest. Wrap the meat in foil or put in a roast pan close to the same size as the meat and cover tightly. Slow roast at 225 F for 3-1/2 to 4 hours (bigger = more). The meat internal temperature needs to rise to 185 F so it will fall apart. Let the meat cool slightly. In the pan WITH all the juices, shred by hand (gloves!) or using two forks. The juices need to soak back into the shredded meat (that s flavour). It can be reheated at this point before serving. If doing ribs, peel back foil, slather with Southern BBQ Sauce and broil to crust the exterior before serving. 12

Possum Sauce (a.k.a. Southern BBQ Sauce) There are many variations of sweet mustard sauce on the web. Some are more sour, more tart or more sweet. I ve tweaked this to my taste and in the process learned that imparting a Canadian flavour (by substituting Maple Syrup for honey) is one of the few times when it doesn t work. Play with different honey, but stick with honey. Also the type of molasses is important. Use Fancy Molasses. The others might work for beef or other meats, but Fancy works with the pork rub. You can sub in some Dijon mustard for a bit more bite. I am a little more generous with the spices than the recipe stipulates, so you can be too - the rub sugar and coleslaw will balance the heat. This is in metric so it can be scaled up. It makes enough for 5 lbs of pork or so and will keep refrigerated. 250 ml (1 cup) prepared mustard 125 ml (1/2 cup) fancy molasses 137 1/2 ml (5/8 cup) honey 62 1/2 ml (1/4 cup) apple cider vinegar 15 ml (1 Tbsp) oil 1 ml (1/4 tsp) oregano 1 ml (1/4 tsp) fresh ground black pepper 1 ml (1/4 tsp) thyme 1 ml (1/4 tsp) cayenne pepper Grind the sugar with the spices (I use a small electric coffee grinder) to create a fine rub that absorbs nicely into Mix together in a pot. Simmer (don t boil) slowly. Stir in the brown crust that forms on top. It doesn t take long to make (15-20 minutes) and can be made in advance and reheated (if you want to serve hot). Swamp Greens (coleslaw) This one is easy. Buy tri-colour shredded cabbage and mix mayonnaise and apple cider vinegar with it. (The vinegar gives tang, but can make it runny.) We added some extra shredded carrots and purple cabbage to give it more colour. Buns If you were at the BBQ, you may have noticed you got half a bun. We ordered hoagie buns, which are a little denser and slightly bigger than hot dog buns, but instead we got nice fresh sub buns. They were too big for portions and a bit soft, so we handed out half a bun and let the hungry folk come back for seconds. If you have a choice, use a hoagie bun: it will stand up to the juices! My final word: Finger-lickin good! My wife chided me at table when I licked my fingers. But I protest pulled pork sandwiches are not fine dining no matter how refined your table mates are. They are meant for hunching over a napkin, letting the juices run, and chowing down. Fingers need to be licked! Let s save the fancy manners for the Anniversary and Commodore s Dinners. I ll be good then, dear! Here s the other recipe folks were asking for: Tennessee Tonic 1 part Moonshine Cherries 1 part Apple Pie Moonshine 1 part White Lightn Moonshine 12 parts tonic water Small mandarin orange Splash of Black Walnut Bitters Mix liquors in a shaker with ice. Strain into a glass and top with cold tonic water. Add a quarter of a small mandarin orange, squeezed, and a couple of the potent cherries. For those who found the Tennessee Tonic too sweet, try: Generous splash of Moonshine Cherries. 1 part Maker s Mark Bourbon (or your choice) 2 parts tonic water (sub soda if you want really non-sweet) Mash in a couple of those cherries (you ll want to eat them) Splash of Black Walnut Bitters Quarter small orange, squeeze. 3 ice cubes You ll probably figure out this is a little more potent. 13

Congratulations Bernie! Bernie Hanby, Past Commodore (1975) and Honorary Life Member of EHYC, recently celebrated his 80th birthday with a big splash in Sechelt Inlet: his 1,674th scuba dive. 15 EHYC Goes International Bjorn Moller, CEO of Teekay Shipping, was the guest speaker at the January Fireside Night. He was presented with an EHYC cap at the end of his talk, and promised to wear it to the launch of Teekay s new ship Petrojarl Knarr in Korea on February 28. He sent this photo with apologies that he was required to wear his hard hat for safety reasons, but had his new cap on hand for the ceremony. A size comparison between Titanic and a modern cruise ship. I was not aware the difference was that big. Burke Corbet 15

BOAT WASH May 3, 2014 Does your boat look like this after the winter? Don t worry. Help is available. On Saturday May 3 (same day as Safety Day) your boat can be transformed for Sailpast with help from the Junior Club. Please sign up in advance (spaces are limited this year we can only do about 8 boats) so we can get your boat looking its best Junior Club donation rates are: Up to 26 feet $40 27 to 30 feet $45 31 to 34 feet $50 Over 35 feet $55 Please note that prices may vary based on grunge factor. 16 juniors@ehyc.org or sign up on the sheet on the notice board at the Club to book your slot.

Replacing the Breakwater Chains The crane arrives. Eagle Tender hauls the Junior boats out of the way. With the crane safely alongside the breakwater, work can begin. The first chain is attached....and the diver prepares to go down. What is this? An alien from the deep? And the details are finished off at a weekend work party. 17
