FILL OUT A DEPARTURE CARD IF CRUISING! Boating Float Plans - Float Plans Save Lives
RANDOM THOUGHTS ON SAILBOAT RACING & CRUISING THANK THE RACE COMMITTEE AT THE FINISH THANK YOUR SPOUSE OR FAMILY ON ARRIVAL The secret to successful sailboat racing or cruising is the same as the secret to quitting smoking NEVER START
Effective Use of a VHF Radio AND WHY NOT TO USE A CELLPHONE TO CALL 911 VHF (Very High Frequency) radios are the two-way radios. VHF OPERATES USING LINE OF SIGHT RANGE BASED ON CURVATURE OF EARTH AND HEIGHT OF MAST radio waves won't bend to follow the curvature of the earth effective useful range of a VHF radio is around miles, maximum All boats should be equipped with at least one and should stand by on Channel 16 (for emergencies, distress calls, safety alerts and USCG Notices to Mariners) and 13 (for vessel bridge to bridge communications which often give crucial information).
911 contacts from CellPhones used on Long Island Sound may reach the CT shore or the Long Island Shore randomly and can make a contact to the wrong agency. Example Case from the Star North Americans
The most important channel on a VHF radio is Channel 16, the international distress and calling frequency. Channel 9 is used for hailing, radio checks, plus some other functions. In some states, for example, 9 is the bridge tender's channel. Channel 6 is for ship-to-ship safety calls after contact is made on another frequency. Channel 13 is for boat-to-boat navigation and also used by bridge tenders in some states. It is normally set by default to low power Channel 22 is for emergency transmissions once directed by the Coast Guard to switch from another channel. CPYC USES CHANNEL 78 FOR CLUB COMMUNICATONS WX-1-3 and above are the NOAA weather channels.
Chatting is frowned upon by the FCC and forbidden on Channel 16 and 9, 22A and many other channels. Specific channels are assigned by the FCC for specific types of communications. VHF is a shared and Open Radio and so everyone hears whatever you broadcast, no privacy on VHF! False Distress Signals or Jokes can result in heavy fines.
There are 3 types of SAFETY MESSAGES They are; DESTRESS, URGENCY and SAFETY. Use DISTRESS MESSAGES when there is grave or imminent danger to life or property and when you need immediate help. Use URGENCY MESSAGES when there is a chance that a non-life-threatening situation may occur. SAFETY MESSAGES relay important information about weather or safety of navigation.
PROCEDURE WORDS (PROWORDS) Word then Meaning OUT This is the end of my transmission to you. No answer is required or expected. OVER This is the end of my transmission to you a response is expected. Go ahead and transmit. (Omit this procedure when it is clearly not needed). ROGER I received your transmission ok. WILCO Your last message has been received & understood, and will be complied with. THIS IS Transmission is from the station whose name and call sign follows immediately. FIGURES Figures or numbers follow, for example, Vessel length is FIGURES two three feet. SPEAK SLOWER Your transmission is difficult to understand. Speak slower. SAY AGAIN Repeat. WORDS TWICE It is difficult to understand you. Give each phrase twice. I SPELL I shall spell the next word phonetically. Used when a proper name is important in the message. Boat Name is Martha. I spell Mike, Alfa. Romeo, Tango, Hotel, Alfa. WAIT I must pause for a few seconds; stand by for further transmission. AFFIRRMATIVE You are correct, or, what you have transmitted is correct. NEGATIVE No. PLEASE DO NOT SAY ROGER WILCO OVER AND OUT, It is all-wrong!
TO CALL ANOTHER PERSON OR STATION THE PROPER PROCEDURE SHOULD BE: SAY SHIPS NAME for example Togetherness This is Fish Box Over. After you have called the other station, release the microphone button. If you continue to hold the button you will not be able to hear the other stations response. When you send, press the button, when you want to listen, release it.
DISTRESS SIGNAL MAYDAY IMMINENT DANGER and a request for immediate help. MAYDAY has priority over all other calls. Speak the Word THREE TIMES, MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY. On Channel 16, do not switch channels. The Coat Guard will give you further instructions. The procedure to follow is: 1. Distress Signal MAYDAY Spoken 3 times 2. The words THIS IS (identify yourself) spoken once 3. Name of your vessel spoken 3 times and your call sign 4. The Distress Signal MAYDAY spoken once 5. The Name of Your Vessel spoken once 6. The position of your vessel either by Latitude and longitude or by bearing either true or compass and a distance from a well-known landmark. You can provide anyway which will assist to located you 7. Nature of your Distress, for example, sinking, fire, taking on water etc. 8. Kind of help needed 9. Any other information that might help. This might include length, hull color, bridge, outriggers, cabin, masts, any distinguishing marks or obvious visual signs. Number of people on board, medical attention needed. Identify how many children, men and or women on board, pfd s in use 10. When you are finished say I WILL BE LISTENING ON CHANNEL END YOUR MESSAGE BY SAYING THIS IS Name of Boat, Call Sign OVER
URGENCY SIGNAL- PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN, Indicates an Urgent signal follows and pertains to the safety of a person or vessel. For example: - Loss of a person overboard, but only when help is needed, - Repeating Urgent storm warning from an authorized shore station, - Loss of steering or power in a shipping lane.
SAFETY SIGNAL SECURITY Announces a message of navigation or important weather warning. It is said 3 times. Safety, Safety, Safety. Safety Signals have higher priority over other messages except Distress and Urgency Messages. These messages are usually initiated by the Coast Guard on channel 9 and 16 and given on CG working Channel 22A You can follow the same procedure if you have a SECURITY Message announce on 9 & 16 and switch to a working channel.
But Now, Back to Racing and Cruising
On the Way Out To the Course or Preparing to Depart on Your Cruise CHECK WIND DIRECTION - it is a variable CHECK CURRENT FLOW AT A BUOY it is a constant that can be used to your advantage REVIEW CONDITIONS WITH CREW AND PLAY OUTSMART THE RACE COMMITTEE or PLAN THE ROUTE TO THE DESTINATION ONCE IN A WHILE SET THE MAIN WITH A REEF WHEN NOT EXPECTED, TOSS A CUSHION OR A (WILLING) KID OR SPOUSE OVERBOARD TO CONDUCT A MAN OVERBOARD DRILL
DEVELOP AND FILE A CRUISING FLOAT PLAN If you are going for just a few hours on your boat, let someone know where you expect to be and when you expect to return. If you plan a longer cruise, leave a copy of a written float plan with your marina, yacht club, or friend. A float plan includes a description of your boat, who is on board, a description of the safety equipment you are carrying, where you expect to be, and when you expect to be there. Instruct the person holding the float plan to notify the Coast Guard or other appropriate agency if you do not return within a reasonable time after your scheduled arrival (taking into account weather, etc.). 49 Your Questions and Comments
For Crew How to Get Invited Back By Dave Henderson
FIRST OFF -- BE ON TIME - And that doesn t mean just in time, but Vince Lombardi time! - There is always prep work that can be done before the boat leaves the dock. - This is the best time to familiarize yourself with the boat, skipper and crew. - Learn where lines go and what they do and what they re called. - Learn where covers, charts, etc. are stowed and where winch handles are kept. - Know where items are located on the boat without having to ask (especially during the race) - Remember - The last thing a skipper needs to worry about is whether you ll make it before he has to leave the dock.
WHAT TO WEAR - WHAT TO BRING - Bring one small bag ONLY! Unless it s blowing 20 knots everything you ll need will fit. - I bring a bag with all needed items: - gloves, fowl weather gear, cap, sunglasses, sunblock - White-soled deck shoes or lace up sneakers - no flip-flops! - Dress in layers and always lean towards the coldest scenario. - Always offer to bring drinks: beer, a six pack of water or soda are always appreciated! Remember - Once you become wet, cold, sunburnt or break a toe you re in for a long sail and nobody likes a moocher!
BE OBSERVANT OF ALL THINGS - Try to get a vibe on the skipper & the rest of the crew. Do they want feedback, do they like to answer questions, or do they like a quiet boat? - Be conscious of the type of talking taking place. Is it more conversational or strictly sailing? - Learn where the marks are, and memorize the chart. Check the wind speed and direction along with the tides before you come down to the club. - Start to memorize the boats at the club, the leaders & where are they are on the course, especially in your division. - Feel the heel of the boat, when to lean out or lay back, learn the difference between a puff and a header and be ever vigilant in finding them. - Watch how particular jobs are preformed so when asked to fill in you ll have an understanding how to preform them. - Remember - Nobody wants a chatty Kathy who distracts everyone on the boat by asking too many questions.
ALWAYS STAY TO HELP CLEAN UP AND PUT AWAY THE BOAT - Start flaking lines, sales with covers, fenders out on the way in after the race, anything that can be done to shorten the time at the dock. (This is where your familiarity with the boat comes in handy.) - Never leave before the boat is completely stored and put away or until the skipper says it s alright to head up to the clubhouse. Even if you re legs are being devoured by mosquitoes. (This is where bringing layers to wear comes in handy) - Never give your skipper a laundry list of worn out items or things to upgrade. Trust me, he knows every square inch of the boat and what he can afford to upgrade. - Lastly, always be complimentary and gracious for being invited to crew - even if it s the 100th time!
Remember The goal is always to get invited back. You want to be the one who decides if you want to or not!!

Your Questions and Comments
Strategy (not Strategery) Strategy is the plan you have for sailing a course in the shortest time possible in the absence of other boats.
Tactics Tactics are how you deal with all those other idiots getting in your way and stealing your place on the start line, screaming buoy room and water and overlap when you're still 10 boat lengths from the buoy, and always sitting there to windward of you spilling dirty air on you and ruining your perfect day.
