STORAGE BELOW Kipper Kite Storage for your gear should be adequate on the Kipper Kite. We have tried to include items for the galley that stack easily so that you will have room for your food and other galley items. There is room in each cabin and head for items needing to be stored respectively. Storage areas: STORAGE COMPARTMENTS Galley: Storage is above and behind the refrigerator and sink areas along the wall and drawer under the salon center seat. Main Salon: Behind settee back cushion. A deep storage locker in the cabinet top behind the settee seats near the Nav station. Under the bench seat in the main salon on each side of the drawer that opens into the galley. To 08/11/2017 Page 23

access take off the cushions off and lift the wooden seat. Storage behind seat cushion Gear Storage: There is plenty of storage for your gear aboard Kipper Kite. Closets in each berth (hangers are provided in each closet). Under the forward settee. On the walls adjacent to each berth. Two large drawers under the forward berth. Note: there is no storage under the two aft berths as these contain the spare parts and mechanisms for operating the boat. Heads: There are medicine cabinets behind the mirrors in each head and hooks for hanging towels. 08/11/2017 Page 24

Large Storage area S S S S S S Location of photo above ANCHORS AND ANCHOR WINDLASS How to deploy the anchor ANCHORS: Kipper Kite is equipped with two anchors: a Bruce 33lb. anchor mounted on the bow roller and a secondary Fortress stored in the aft starboard side stern locker. FORWARD ANCHOR: The primary Bruce has an electric windlass and 300 feet of chain. o The chain is marked first at 100 with yellow paint and then every 50 with a 5 white paint and ¼ rope inserted into the chain link. Prior to the end of the chain at 300 the chain 08/11/2017 Page 25

has a 10 red mark and rope inserted into the link chain. holds well in a variety of bottom conditions. The Bruce Red Chain Last 10 feet SCOPE 4:1: The scope to use in the islands is 3 or 4 to 1. Most coves are 25 to 30 deep (add 5 feet for water level to deck), so expect to pay out about of chain up to 300 if required. After you have paid out the suitable amount of chain, slowly back the boat until the chain is taunt. Then attach the snubber (p. 25) before putting boat in reverse to set anchor. Increase the RPM to for 60 seconds and test the holding power. Important: Always remember to check the tide table when considering your anchorage. If the tide drops 6 during the middle of the night, will there still be enough depth to float the boat with a 6 keel and not become grounded? ANCHOR WINDLESS The electric anchor windlass is controlled by a circuit breaker located in the aft starboard cabin bulkhead below the berth. Push the small black switch up (below the horizontal black bar with the red button) to activate the 08/11/2017 Page 26

circuit. Don t push in, swing up. Push the red button in to de-activate the windlass. Push Red Button Off Arm the Windless by swinging up this small black arm so it is parallel with the larger black arm with the red button LOWERING THE ANCHOR: Remove the safety lanyard from the anchor. 08/11/2017 Page 27

Lower the anchor using the black foot deck button near the windless while the engine is running at 1200 rpm (idle) to activate the charging system. Tie the chain using the snubber or rope off to a deck cleat. Engine must by running. Snubber Anchor Down Anchor Up REMEMBER: When setting anchor, attach the snubber to the anchor chain before putting boat in reverse to pull on the chain. Failure to do so puts undue force on the 08/11/2017 Page 28

windless and could result in damage to the windless. RAISING THE ANCHOR Start the boat engine and run at 1400 rpm (idle) to activate the charging system. Wash Down: Prepare to wash the mud off the chain as it is retrieved by the windless with the coiled hose in the anchor locker. Open the yellow thru- hull valve located in the forward head under the sink. Wash Down : Yellow thruhull Valve closest to bow o Activate the switch at the navigation station labeled wash/dump. Wash the chain with the hose located in the anchor locker. Care should be taken to have a slack chain. Wash Down Switch 08/11/2017 Page 29

Note: Turn on the wash down switch and thru hull valve described above before raising the anchor. Raise the anchor chain with the anchor windless until the snubber hook is 6 below the bow roller. Remove the snubber hook. Remove the snubber line from the bow cleats and store in the anchor locker. Push the up button on the deck to activate the windlass. (continued) Motor up to the anchor while retrieving the anchor rode. Do not use the winch to pull the boat to the anchor. If the anchor will not break free easily with the windlass, use the boat s engine to break 08/11/2017 Page 30

the anchor free from the bottom by rotating the boat at a different angle and try pulling the anchor free. Continue to bring the anchor aboard by operating the deck foot control button. After retracting each 25 of chain, use the wooden stick in the anchor locker to spread the chain. This prevents the chain from forming a pile and causing the chain to jam against the windless. When seating the anchor on the bow roller. Insert the safety lanyard to the anchor after it is seated. TURN OFF WINDLESS: Once the anchor is secured, deactivate the circuit by pushing the red button on the switch in the starboard berth bulkhead. (See page 24) Be sure to turn off the wash down pump and then close the yellow thru-hull value in the forward head. (See page 26) Secondary Anchor: 08/11/2017 Page 31

The secondary anchor is a Fortress 23 weighing 17 pounds with 20 feet of 5/16 chain and 200 of 9/16 three strand nylon line. This anchor is located in the aft starboard lazerette in the cockpit. The secondary anchor is used only in very rare circumstances. We recommend you only use the bow anchor and add additional scope to the bow anchor in winds more than 15 knots. Caution: In tidal areas such as the San Juan and Gulf Islands deploying two anchors can cause fouled anchor rodes. Caution: In wind shifts of 90 degrees to the boat direction, the boat becomes a sail and strong tension on the anchor rodes is the result. Use the secondary anchor for a Bahamian moor. This means two anchors from the bow (see illustration above). Using the secondary anchor as a stern anchor is discouraged. Stern Tie: A stern tie to shore is recommended to reduce boat swing in a narrow bay or cove. Kipper Kite has a spool (600 ) of polypropolene line 08/11/2017 Page 32

that can attach to a stern cleat and be brought to shore with the help of the dinghy. The spool is in the aft starboard lazerette in the cockpit. After the main anchor is set, remove the spool of 600 line from the lazerette. Insert the pole/mop handle into the center of the spool. It is preferred that 2 crew members take the dinghy with the stern line to shore, wrap around a fixed object such as a tree or a iron ring mounted in rock, and return the line to the boat. Secure the bitter end to the one stern boat cleat. Pull in excess line at the spool and secure the line from the spool to the other stern line cleat. Stern Line General Idea AUTO PILOT 08/11/2017 Page 33

How to use the Auto Pilot while underway. Kipper Kite is outfitted with a Raymarine Autohelm ST6000. It is located on the portside rear cockpit near the panel with the key/fuel gauge/rpm. Push auto when you want to engage the auto pilot, and standby when you want to disengage. This Raymarine Autohelm does not interface with the new B & G Chart Plotter, so you cannot operate the Autohelm unit from the Chart Plotter. Turn on the red handle valve in the propane locker for the BBQ. o See p. 70 To light BBQ, turn flame control to on, insert lighter into hole on the left side of the grill, and light BBQ. (See photo above) Adjust the flame control to desired heat. Please remember to turn off the red handle valve in the propane locker after use. Also, as a courtesy to the next guest, please use the wire brush wired onto the barbecue to clean it after each use. Thank you! And enjoy your food cooked in this way! BATTERIES, INVERTER AND SHORE POWER 08/11/2017 Page 35

How to understand and control the electric power. All the electrical equipment, phone chargers, laptops and other electrical appliances you bring on the boat are powered by (1) house batteries of Kipper Kite (a 12 volt system); (2) an inverter that converts 12 volt to 110 volt; or (3) shore power. House Batteries o o o o Battery banks are provided for house and engine start batteries. The house batteries can be accessed through the starboard aft cabin under the mattress and the starting battery is under the companionway stairs to the cockpit. New for 2016: All batteries are Crown AGM Sealed batteries. Bank 1 (for starting engine) is a one 12 volt system. Bank 2 (house/inverter) has six 6 volt deep cycle batteries combined to make a 12 volt system. Volt Meter S=Starter H=House Amp Meter Battery Charge Status: You can determine how much battery power is in the starter battery or the house battery by depressing the button (shown above) for either S (starter) or H (house) and viewing the volt meter. You can also determine the amps you 08/11/2017 Page 36

are drawing from your use of electric equipment and appliances by viewing the lower amp meter. AC Charging the Batteries: This is done with the shore power cord at a moorage. The Batteries can also be charged by running the engine. How to Use Inverter The Inverter converts 12 volts from the boat s batteries to 110 volts. The Inverter drains the house battery when the engine is not running. Please use hair dryers, curling irons or other high amp draw electrical equipment only when connected to shore power. Do not use the electric heater or other high draw equipment at the same time you use the hairdryer or curling iron. You may blow the circuit. If this happens, you can turn the circuit back on at the 08/11/2017 Page 37

o electrical circuit panel after unplugging or turning off the electrical equipment. To use Inverter: Inverter switch on at Electrical panel (always leave on) Magnum Inverter at Nav Station on (lower left corner white button. (turn on when using inverter, turn off when not using inverter. Inverter drains battery even without using electrical appliance or equipment. Keep Inverter Switch on Turn On Inverter How to use SHORE POWER (30 Amp) o o o This requires the boat to be attached to the appropriate electrical receptacle at dockside with the shore power cable. The shore power cable attaches to the stern on the starboard side behind the swim platform. Lower the swim platform to plug the cord into the boat. Shore power runs all electrical systems of the boat, including the boat s microwave and water heater. It will power your hairdryer and other electrical equipment. 08/11/2017 Page 38

o o o Correct order: (1) Attach power cord on shore (don t turn on breaker yet); (2) connect power cord to boat; (3) turn on breaker on shore; (4) turn on breaker in boat. Make sure you switch on the 110 outlet on the electrical panel. Once on shore power, you can turn on the water heater. Be sure to push the reset button on the water heater. 110 Volt AC 110 outlets Water Heater Water Heater reset Button BILGE PUMPS How to check and use the bilge pumps There are two bilge pumps. BILGE #1: The electric bilge pump is located under the starboard salon seat and has an 08/11/2017 Page 39

automatic float switch. When there is fluid in the bilge, the switch should automatically activate the bilge pump. The bilge pump circuit breaker at the navigation station should always remain on. BILGE #2: The emergency manual bilge pump is located aft in the cockpit adjacent to the wheel on the port side. The handle is kept in the port lazerette of the cockpit. (Photo looking down from helm) CABIN HEAT: How to warm up the cabin. Kipper Kite is equipped with a Webasto 1020 hot water hydronic heat system. The furnace is located in the stern starboard aft lazerette in the cockpit. The forced air hot water system vents are located as follows: o One vent in the starboard aft cabin below the closet; o Two under the dinette; o One by the Nav station; and o One is in the forward bow head and one in the forward cabin. 08/11/2017 Page 40

To turn the system on/off (see photos below), Lift the on/off switch under the thermostat to the on position. (Photo #1 below) Next turn on the heater fan in the navigation station to low or medium (recommended) under the elec. panel. (Photo #2 below) Turn on thermostat switch (Photo #3) and adjust temperature (Photo #4) #4 Temp. #3 On/Off #1 On/Off #2 Fan Speed Adjust the thermostat on the wall in the salon next to the navigation station/panel to the desired temperature. It will take a short while for the hot water to warm up. o The white thermostats are located in the forward state room and main salon. Adjust these to your individual comfort level. o To balance the temperature throughout the boat set both thermostats at the same temperature. If you desire to have 08/11/2017 Page 41

o o the forward cabin to be warmer or cooler, set the thermostat higher or lower and close the door to this area. The furnace can be used anytime at dock, anchor or underway. The fan will come on when the temperature in the salon or forward cabin is below the adjusted temperature. This system is not connected to the operation of the engine. It operates independent of the engine but runs on diesel when docked, anchored or underway. CELLULAR TELEPHONE JACK: Kipper Kite is equipped with two 12-volt cigarette lighter type outlet for recharging your cellular telephone at the Navigation Station. 08/11/2017 Page 42

Cell phone jack CIRCUIT BREAKERS How to turn on and off the electric systems. 08/11/2017 Page 43

Kipper Kite is equipped with circuit breakers, which are located on the main electrical panel in the navigation station. Master Circuit Breaker Note: Be aware that there is a master circuit breaker in the aft starboard lazerette in the cockpit that when switched off, will disable all electrical power on the boat. If you are wondering why there is no electric power in any circuit, you may have accidently knocked this breaker when you were 08/11/2017 Page 44

putting gear in or taking it out of the aft starboard lazerette. Check the breaker. COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT How to communicate with the VHF Radio Kipper Kite is equipped with a VHF Radio. Please monitor Channel 16 during your cruise. It is reserved for emergencies and boat-to-boat initial contact. After contact, move to channels 68, 69 or 80. Weather Channels: We listen to weather channels with the WX button or channel 1 to 10 typically 4 before we sail in the morning and prior to anchoring for the evening. This is generally a medium wind region but weather changes can be sudden. Listen for the Inland waters of western Washington. You will hear Strait of Juan de Fuca (lies south of the San 08/11/2017 Page 45

Juan s), Georgia Strait (lies north), and Rosario Strait (runs through eastern part of San Juan s). Reaching San Juan Sailing: SJS monitors channel 80A. However, if you have a problem or need to contact them for any reason, call them on this channel or using your cellular phone at Name of vessel: Kipper Kite; Call sign: WDB4281 DINGHY The 10 Achilles hard bottom dinghy is stable, rows easily, and tows with the least drag if brought close to the boat about 4 feet off the stern. This lifts the dinghy bow, reduces drag, and reduces risk that you won t accidentally wrap the painter around the propeller when you back up. We tie the painter off twice a cleat tie close to a stern cleat and the bitter end onto the stern rail. If one tie slips loose, the other should hold, preventing loss of the dinghy. It has an aluminum hull, making it much lighter to carry. The Avon dinghy oars are located inside the 08/11/2017 Page 46

dinghy and should be left secured by straps in the dinghy when not in use. Please keep the dinghy clean as dirt will wear the fabric. Warning: Be careful of the heater exhaust on the starboard side aft. When you use the heater the hot exhaust can melt the dinghy or the dinghy line while at anchor. If you are using the heater attach the dinghy to the port side. GETTING OUT OF THE DINGHY/BEACHING THE DINGHY: As owners, we would very much appreciate your special care when beaching the dinghy. NW beaches are not gentle sandy beaches. Most often they are rocky, covered by barnacles equipped with extra sharp rubber cutters! Here s what works best: launch a person off the dingy bow as you approach shore; then offload everyone over the bow. Now lift the dinghy 08/11/2017 Page 47

above barnacle height and deposit it gently on the beach. We also secure the painter under a rock or to a log a rising tide can leave you high and dry and dinghy-less! There is a 2.3hp Honda outboard for use on the dinghy. See Honda Outboard p. 69 DODGER AND BIMINI Dodger The most vulnerable part of the dodger is the plastic glass. Please avoid touching it as much as possible. We do not recommend folding the dodger down! to clean, poor fresh water from a galley kettle over the windows, next use only a sopping wet sponge, wiping very lightly with lots of plain water to avoid miniscule scratches that fog it up. The worst villain for plastic windshield appears after sailing smartly into a challenging breeze. The salt 08/11/2017 Page 48

spray, which collects on the plastic windshield, dries in the wind, leaving behind tiny salt deposits that obscure your vision. Please don t let an energetic crewmember wipe off those salt crystals. They act like sandpaper on the glass. Instead, let them flood off the crystals with a kettle of fresh water from the galley. please leave the dodger intact. It s a bear to reassemble! Bimini The sunshade is folded up in the mounted bracket in the stern of the cockpit. It can be opened and folded out for sun or rain protection. Be certain to secure it to the dodger with straps attached to the Bimini when it is open. Secure the aft bimini to the stern pulpit with straps attached to the Bimini. With the tension on the straps you can then zip the Bimini and Dodger together. EMERGENCY TILLER In the unlikely event the steering wheel cable was ever to break while Kipper Kite is underway, the boat is equipped with an emergency tiller. It is a steel pipe with a 90 degree angle. Tiller is stored in the starboard side lazerette in the cockpit. The emergency tiller is installed in a fitting that is beneath the seat at the helm. You will see a round fitting that must be removed with a winch 08/11/2017 Page 49

handle. The emergency tiller is lowered through that space and fits into a socket opening below. Emergency Tiller inserts here ENGINE OIL LEVELS The engine oil RPM Delco W for diesels engines. To check the engine oil levels see steps 4 and 5 on the Predeparture Checklist on p The transmission oil - ATF 08/11/2017 Page 50

Add Engine Oil Here FIRE EXTINGUISHERS There is a fire extinguisher in each cabin. There are two fire extinguishers in the main Salon. One in the galley and one in the Nav station. There is a fire extinguisher under the step in the cockpit directly below the companionway. 08/11/2017 Page 51

FUEL MANAGEMENT SUPPLY/RETURN & FUELING The 40 gallon tank sits under the cockpit sole. There is a fuel gauge on the port side of the helm in the cockpit. If it dips much below half, add fuel. (Running out of diesel involves a lengthy bleeding process.) Remember diesel fuel only. 08/11/2017 Page 52

Fuel Gauge Engine Hours Please be very careful when fueling. Never allow maximum flow from the filler hose. If you do, the fill tube will surge and diesel will spill into the water and put you into the ever-caring hands of the EPA. Fill slowly and carefully. When the pipe begins to gurgle like it is full, check the gauge. You are probably full. Check the transom vents and, with soap, wipe up any excess fuel to avoid yellowing the stern and polluting the water. Be very careful of drips when removing the hose. Diesel and shoe bottoms are a very slippery and dangerous combination. After wiping, please use soapy water to scrub down any drips and shoe bottoms. The single deck plate clearly marked DIESEL is located aft portside behind the mooring cleat. Be certain to put the diesel into the hole marked for diesel only. There is a water plate just forward of the diesel plate. DO NOT PUT DIESEL IN THE WATER SPOUT OR WATER INTO THE DIESEL SPOUT. NEVER ADD DIESEL TO THE FUEL TANK AND WATER TO THE 08/11/2017 Page 53

AFT WATER TANK AT THE SAME TIME (TO AVOID CONTAMINATING THE WATER OR DIESEL TANKS). The deck key for opening the diesel plate is located in the second drawer down under the chart table. GALLEY EQUIPMENT Kipper Kite galley is equipped with a refrigerator, 3 burner propane stove with oven and a microwave. See operating manuals for specifics. REFRIGERATOR The refrigeration is controlled by a switch on the main electrical panel. Switch this on. The refrigerator operates on shore power, motoring, and under sail. There is a thermometer located in the refrigerator. Set the control (see photo below) between 1 and 2 to keep frozen foods in the right hand lower compartment frozen and food in the other areas at the correct cooled temperature. The thermometer in the refrigerator should register about 30 degrees. The refrigerator compartment is very well insulated. Keep-dry mats have been placed at the bottom of the unit to keep your food dry as condensation forms and drains out of the unit bottom. Thermostat is in cabinet here. Refrigerator Thermostat When your sailing adventure is over, please remove the mats and clean up any spilled food while under way. Please replace the mats. Water can be drained from 08/11/2017 Page 54

the refrigerator by switching the shower drain valve in the aft head to the refrigerator drain position, activating the shower drain circuit breaker at the navigation station and pushing the shower drain button in the aft head. STOVE The ENO gimbaled propane stove has three burners, and an oven. It has electronic ignition and see-thru black glass oven door. Safety features include thermocouple gas shutoffs, pot holders and stove tops surrounded on three sides by a raised flame guard that also helps to keep pots and pans where they belong. Burners rated at: Stove 8500/6000/3400Btu and Oven 6100Btu Propane is heavier than air and requires caution. For your safety, please follow these procedures: Open the hand valve on the propane tank all the way (located in the stern locker on the port side). Switch the LP circuit breaker on at the navigation station. L.P. SWITCH Rotate the control valve on the stove to the 9 o clock position and push the control valve knob in and hold it in for 15 seconds. Push the igniter switch on the right side of the stove to lite the burner. Turn the control counterclockwise to the 08/11/2017 Page 55

position desired. Valve location (left= oven; middle/left=left burner; middle/right=back burner and right=right burner). When finished with the stove, immediately turn off the burner, turn the LP circuit breaker to off at the navigation station and shut the valve on the propane tank. The propane volume on board at the beginning of the week should be enough for ordinary use for a weeklong charter. A 2 nd propane tank is located in the propane locker and can be attached to the supply line if required. If you need help with this, please call SJS on the VHF radio or cell phone. See page 71 for details about propane. A set of pots ranging from small to large with one lid to fit the three smaller pots and one lid to fit the frying pans and larger pots are provided. These are located in the cabinet under the center settee inside the drawer. The oven is lit by turning on the knob to 9 o-clock position, holding it in for 10 seconds and pushing the red lighter switch on the right side of the stove. The oven is good for baking and warming. If broiling is desired, please use the barbecue. Please clean the stove and BBQ after each use. MICROWAVE: The microwave operates as your microwave at home. It can be used on shore power. When motoring or under sail, limit the use of the microwave to 2-3 minutes. It uses significant battery power. If not on shore power, remember to turn on the inverter to operate the microwave. (see p. 33) PLEASE USE ONLY MICROWAVE SAFE DISHES. All plates, cups, bowls, and salad plates on Kipper Kite microwave safe. The Rubber Maid bowls (in the drawer in the bottom of the bench settee) are microwave safe and 08/11/2017 Page 56

provided for your use. You can also use paper plates, cups or paper towels (not supplied). Sink Drains: The drains for the sinks are all slow. This is due to the design of the drain system. To speed drainage in the galley, keep both drain plugs out and drains open. Using cold water to clear soap suds helps. Use of the soapy sponge only till there is enough soap in the wash water will ease the rinsing of the sinks after washing dishes. We put a towel on the board covering the wood tray above the stove and put the drainer on this for draining the clean dishes. Getting water all over is not hard to do. Draining the initial water off the dishes before you put them into the drainer definitely helps. Please dry and put all dishes and cooking gear away before getting under sail. We appreciate your keeping water dried off the counters in the galley to avoid damaging the wood finishes. GRAY WATER DISCHARGE Water discharged from the sinks in the heads and galley and shower water is discharged directly into the bays. Please be considerate of other boaters when discharging this water. Gray water is not polluting the bays. Do be 08/11/2017 Page 57

careful what you pour down any drain to be certain that you do not pollute the bay. HEADS MARINE How to use the Heads and empty the holding tanks. There are two heads on the Kipper Kite. Please do not put anything into the toilet head that has not been eaten. Toilet paper that is provided can clog the system. To assure a pleasant trip, please put used toilet paper into plastic bags (such as ziplock) and dispose in appropriate garbage containers on shore. Forward Head: The forward head is a standard manual pump and flush system. Operator Instructions are shown next to the pump handle. The forward head has a 15 gallon holding tank. Keep in mind that for solids, approximately 1 gallon of water will be used to flush. This means 15 flushes for a full holding tank. Do not overfill the holding tank. You will have a sewage disaster. Pump Handle 08/11/2017 Page 58

Aft Head: The aft head is electric fresh water flush. It is a premium upgrade for your convenience and to minimize potential head odor. This head is used most often. (Caution: do not flush any paper down the head as it will plug lines and holding tank. Please follow instructions below. Thank you!) Normal toilet operation for the aft electric head: Add Water to Toilet Bowl: Press switch 1 to add water and hold until desired water level is achieved. More water may be added to flush solids. Conserve water because each flush equals one-gallon of fresh water from water tank. Flushing Toilet: Press switch 2 down: Waste will drain from bowl. Hold two more seconds after waste is evacuated. For liquid waste hold switch for shorter period of time. Dry Operation: During travel in rough weather, water in the toilet bowl can splash out onto the floor. To avoid this from occurring, press switch /11/2017 Page 59

to drain water completely from toilet bowl. Caution: Do not use switch 3 to flush waste! Water must be used for each flush. 1 Add Water 2 Flush Emptying Holding Tanks: 3 Dry Bowl There are two ways to empty the holding tanks: (1) pump out the tanks (described on p. 55); or (2) Use the macerators to dump the tanks overboard (described on p.56). NOTE: It is illegal to discharge the holding tanks overboard while in US waters or in ports. San Juan Sailing s staff will carefully discuss holding tanks and pump outs on your arrival. Exploding or leaking sewage is not pleasant. The tanks should be pumped out, filled with fresh water through the deck fitting to rinse, and then pumped out again. We ask that you please do this maintenance as you use and return the boat so that your charter experience on the Kipper Kite is pleasant. New stainless steel holding tanks and tank monitors were added to assure your comfort. 08/11/2017 Page 60

To keep the holding tanks and hoses from smelling please add ½ cap of Zaal Noflex Digester powder located in the medicine cabinets each day. Also recommended: With each use of the head, spray Febreeze Air Freshener directly into the bowl and pump during the flush. Be sure to pump enough water to carry waste to the holding tank not just out of visible sight. Waste sitting in hoses will increase odor of the head. It takes about 1 gallon of water to move solid waste to the holding tank. ½ Cap each day Forward Head: The forward (bow) head has a 15 gallon holding tank located forward of the head in the bow. It is accessed through the door behind the toilet. Affluent is pumped from the head to the holding tank. If the pump handle (see page 51) on the forward head is difficult to move up/down add vegetable oil to the bowl and pump the handle several times. The easiest operation is to use pump out stations in various locations in the San Juans every other day. See page 56 for photo of Yellow Head Overboard valve for maceration. Leave black Y-valve alone! No need to ever turn black Y-valve for either pump-out or maceration. Aft Head: The aft head has an 18 gallon tank in the cockpit port side lazarette. This holding tank is visible by opening the port side lazarette 08/11/2017 Page 61

compartment. The head hoses were replaced in June, 2016 and reconfigured to eliminate all Y-valves. Toilet bowl contents flow to holding tank. Holding Tank contents are pumped out from the deck plate at pump out stations (see page 55) or by activating macerator directly overboard (see page 57). Either way (pump out or maceration) there are no Y-valves to turn. You will know the holding tank is full when the red light is on. Light is located behind the behind the sink in forward and aft head. If light is red discontinue use and empty tank. Red Light = Full holding Pump Out Holding Tanks: tank The deck plates are clearly marked Waste and are located on the starboard forward deck and aft port deck. It 08/11/2017 Page 62

is recommended that the holding tanks be pumped out at least once every 48 hours. Please rinse and pump out again. Never fill the water while pumping out the waste at the same time to avoid contamination of the water system. Also please clean from the deck with soapy water any dripping from the waste pump out hose. Pump Out station: The Pump-Out Station suction hose should form a seal at the deck plate. Important: Do not raise the suction nozzle from the deck plate during pump out. Waste will spray all over (you). Forward holding tank: Remove deck fitting, insert pump out hose, and activate pump. There are no Y-valves that must be turned to empty during pump out. Aft holding tank: Remove deck fitting, insert pump out hose and activate pump. As discussed on page 54, there are no longer any Y-valves that need to be turned to empty the holding tank during pump out. The Pump-out Station suction hose should form a seal at the deck plate. After the tank is empty, add clear water to rinse and pump out again. Pump out hose fitting. Pump Overboard Using Macerator: A macerator pump is a small pump that grinds solids and pumps out waste from the holding tank through 08/11/2017 Page 63

a thru hull outlet into the water. Empty the tanks one at a time, never both at the same time. Both forward and aft macerators are activated at the Nav station below the circuit breakers. (see photo next page) Forward holding tank: 5 steps to macerate: (1) Open large yellow valve labeled Forward Head Overboard below sink in forward head; (2) Turn on Fwd Macerator at Nav station (see next page); (3) pump for approx. 5 Forward Head Overboard valve shown in closed position. 08/11/2017 Page 64

minutes; (4) Turn off Fwd. macerator; and (5) close yellow valve under forward sink marked Forward Head Overboard NEVER move this black Y-valve. It is set for Tank and Macerate. Keep it in same position to Pump out from deck plate. Aft holding tank: 3 Steps to Macerate: 1. At the navigation station activate circuit breaker marked aft macerator (see photo next page) 2. Pump for approximately 5 minutes. 3. After the holding tank is empty turn off the aft macerator. Remember: As of June 2016, with the reconfiguration of hoses it is no longer necessary to turn any Y-valves to macerate the aft head. 08/11/2017 Page 65

Forward Macerator Aft Macerator In our cruising, we find that we use shore side facilities in parks and marinas whenever practical. Remember to keep quarters (usually 4-6 quarters per 08/11/2017 Page 66

shower) available for using the shower facilities. Thank you for your care of our boat and its important systems!! HOT WATER WATER TANKS How to fill and manage the water tanks and to have hot water while on the water. Hot water is supplied by turning on the circuit breaker located on the AC (120 volt) panel and pushing the reset button on left of the Navigation Station when plugged into shore power. It is also heated through a heat exchanger when the engine is operating. The tank has a 10 gallon capacity, and is located under the aft salon settee. WATER CAPACITIES Kipper Kite has two 80 gallon plastic water tanks located under the forward and aft port berths. Water gauges are located on the wall panel in the navigation station. The amount of water in each tank can be determined by pushing in the black button next to the appropriate gauge. Water is used from one first. Monitoring the water 08/11/2017 Page 67

gauge gives you warning when to switch tanks. Recommendation: always fill both tanks while at a dock. Check amount of water in tanks You can switch tanks by opening and closing the valves under the aft salon settee closest to the Navigation station. Water Valves to switch tanks There are deck plates in the bow on the starboard side and stern on the port side for filling the water tanks. A white hose is provided for this in the starboard side lazerette in the cockpit. Do not use this white hose for filling the holding tanks with water during pump out. Never fill the water tanks at the same time you are pumping out the waste tanks or refueling to avoid contaminating your fresh water. It is easy to use up the water faster than you think. However, if your crew does not let the water run continuously while they brush their teeth, shave, and shower or do the dishes, you shouldn t have a problem. Fill the tanks in 08/11/2017 Page 68

mid-week and at the end of charter. Potable water is available at most docksides, or by the fueling stations. TIP: If you are in the salon and you hear the water pump running continuously even though no one is using a sink, this means you just can out of water in one of the two water tanks. Turn off the water pressure switch, and switch water tanks as shown on previous page. LIFE SLING AND 3:1 RETRIEVAL How to use the Life Sling and 3:1 Block and Tackle Retrieval to get a crew member safely back on board. The Life Sling is located on the starboard side stern rail. The 3:1 block and tackle is in the yellow life sling bag in the starboard lazerette in the 08/11/2017 Page 69

cockpit. The idea on use is in the photo below. Instructions on using the life sling are on the bag and also in these owners notes in Appendix B. Basic Instructions: Read directions before departing in Appendix A. Deploy Lifesling for crew overboard. Pull in Lifesling with crew. Tie off yellow Life Sling line to boat with crew beside boat. To lift crew out of water to the deck with the 3:1 block tackle, see instructions on next page. (continued on next page) Deploy 3:1 Block Tackle Remove Block and Tackle from bag. Open nearest lifeline gate. Attach Pulley #1 to Boom on aft D-Ring (shown in photo #1). Attach Pulley #2 to Toe Rail near gate on side of boat where crew is pulled in (shown in photo #2) Attach carabiner #3 to D-Rings on Lifesling (show in photo #3) Attach line from Block and Tackle to Jib Winch, and use winch handle to hoist crew overboard into gate. 08/11/2017 Page 70

#3 #1 #2 #3 #4 LIGHTS Kipper Kite has lighting throughout the Salon, at the Nav Desk, in each berth and in the cockpit. Berths: Each berth has an overhead light located above the closet. In addition, each berth has a reading light that either has a switch directly on the light or a separate light switch. Cockpit: There is a small LED light in the cockpit mounted just above the cockpit table on the back side of instrument pod. The black switch is found near the light. See photo below. 08/11/2017 Page 71

Nav Desk: There is a flexible LED light at the nav desk attached on the upper left corner of the electrical panel. The on/off switch is a small black button on the base of the light where it attaches to the wood panel. One push turn on the red light and a second push turns on the white light. Salon: There are two sets of lights on the headliner of the salon. The first set are the lights near the companionway. The switch is on the starboard side midship below the window. The other lights in the salon over the dining table are switched on/off at a switch above the microwave on the portside. There is also a small reading light on the bullhead above the settee with a switch on the light itself. Cockpit Light Switch NAVIGATION SYSTEMS and Related Instruments How to turn on the navigation instruments you will need while underway. New for 2016 are B & G wind, depth and speed instruments. The Kipper Kite is equipped with a wind gauge, depth sounder, knot meter (see 08/11/2017 Page 72

photo below) It is also equipped with a GPS, a B & G Chart plotter at the helm, and radar. Wind Depth Knot Meter/Boat Speed DEPTHSOUNDER The B & G depth sounder is located in the middle of the instrument pod above the companionway. The digital depth sounder will not give accurate readings beyond 200. It is designed for use in shallow waters. In deeper water, the sensitivity on the unit decreases as the transducer tries to get some reading back. Consequently, you will receive many false readings caused by currents, changes in water temperature, fish, and underwater seaweed. Use the depth sounder only as an aid to navigation in water (300 feet or less). However, the key to avoiding rocks is not the depth sounder 08/11/2017 Page 73

but knowing where you are on the chart at all times. (Rocks are the single biggest navigational and safety hazard in the islands but they are marked on the charts.) KNOTMETER The B &G knot meter is located on the starboard side of the instrument pod above the companionway. If the digital knot meter shows a reading of 0.00 while underway, the impeller is most likely clogged with a piece of eelgrass. Sometimes it will float off overnight. You can also try removing it by traveling in reverse. OPERATING SPEEDS: Optimal cruising speed while motoring is knots at 2500 RPM and 1 GPH. Please do not exceed 2500 RPM continuously because it is hard on the diesel engine to push past cruising hull speed (at very little increase in speed) but use the power if needed in adverse currents. o The engine s maximum RPM is The fuel tank is located underneath the cockpit between the port and starboard aft cabin berths. The fuel fill is aft on the port side. There are engine alarms for both low oil pressure and water temperature. It is important to check oil level before engine start, raw water 08/11/2017 Page 74

The B & G Wind Gauge shows important information: AWS= Apparent Wind Speed TWS= True Wind Speed TWA= True Wind Angle AWA= Apparent Wind Angle Yes, Kipper Kite is sailing at 9.4 knots in 16.1 knots of true wind with 1 reef in the main and a reefed jib. 08/11/2017 Page 75

B & G Chart Plotter and Radar How to Activate and use the Chart Plotter at the Helm New for 2016 is a 12 B & G Zeus2 Chartplotter/Radar. The screen can be accessed by touch or by using buttons and main knob. A quick guide to using the Chart Plotter is found in Appendix A. Note: The autopilot is not a B & G product, and so the autopilot function on the chart plotter (shown above) does not control the autopilot. The autopilot is controlled separately. Menu See Note Below re: autopilot Power Button Note: The auto pilot button on the B & G Chart Plotter does not operate the Raymarine autopilot. See p /11/2017 Page 76

The screen can be configured in several different ways, including a unique function relating to sailing not found on other chart plotters: This split screen configuration shows the SailSteer panel We have wired the B & G 12 GPS, chart plotter and radar into the ship s power. There is a cord at the navigation station which connects the GPS to its antenna (on the stern rail). The radar antenna is located on the mast. To activate the radar/chart plotter turn on the following switches at the Navigation Station: Autopilot Electronics. Then turn on the power button on the chart plotter at the helm (see photo on previous page) Please refer to the B & G Chart Plotter Quick Start Guide in Appendix B (attached) for detailed information on how to use the Chart Plotter and radar. The radar is constantly running but not shown on the screen. It can be activated when you desire to use this and other features. To turn the chart plotters off, start at Chart Plotter at the helm. You can then turn off the appropriate switches in the Navigation Station. 08/11/2017 Page 77

Use of Radar: To turn on the radar, follow the instructions in the Quick Start Guide. As a practical matter, navigating the San Juans is line of sight with the normal clear visibility. The only time you might need the radar is in the event that you are suddenly enveloped in fog, which is rare in this area except late August and early September. Fog usually 08/11/2017 Page 78

burns off before mid-day. So if the soupy stuff sets in, put on an extra pot of coffee or go shopping until it lifts. This is a broadband radar unit that has great clarity and is very user friendly. We hope you never have to use it. It will show AIS data for the commercial vessels (and other boats with AIS.) This is very useful for watching for ferry boats and other ships that are moving at 20+ knots. OUTBOARD MOTOR FOR DINGHY Kipper Kite is equipped with a 2.3hp Honda motor for the dinghy. It is air-cooled. It is has a 4-stroke motor, which 08/11/2017 Page 79

does not require an oil/gas mix. Simply use regular gasoline in the red gas tank. Take off stern rail and attach to stern of the dingy. Use the line attached to Honda outboard to tie to the dingy, so that if the outboard motor slips it will not be lost in the water. Make sure outboard is filled with gas. Open gas tank vent screw on top of gas tank stopper. Pull out choke. Make sure gas line lever is open Pull starter cord. Gas Tank Choke Open gas line PROPANE Kipper Kite has two propane tanks. San Juan Sailing is responsible for filling these tanks for charter guests. They are located in the aft port lazerette. You will need to turn 08/11/2017 Page 80

on the valve on the propane tank (then the LP selinoid switch on the electrical panel in the nav station). Se page 48. If you run out of propane in the first tank, switch the hose to the second tank. Turn on Tank Valve Turn on/off Red Valve for Barbeque SAFETY EQUIPMENT What is it and where to find it. 08/11/2017 Page 81

Safety equipment is provided on board. Kipper Kite First Aid Kit: There is a first aid kit located in the medicine cabinet in the forward head. Fire extinguishers (6): Fire extinguishers are located in each cabin. There are 2 fire extinguishers in the main salon 1 in the galley and 1 in the Nav station. There is a fire extinguisher the cockpit under the step to the companion way stairs. (See p. 45) Life vests (PDFs) are available in each of the cabin closets and extra vests are in the starboard side cockpit lazarette. Six comfortable automatic fill are included. Use of these vests is highly advisable when in the cockpit and especially in rough seas. Vests should be used at all times when on the deck of the boat while underway. Remember the water temperature is usually 48 F making it a short lived experience if a cruiser falls overboard. The flare kit and search light are located in the navigation station side pocket. See p. 13 for information. Life Sling and Life Sling Retrieval. See p for information. Tethers and Jack Line. See p. 82 for information Emergency Plug. See page 13 for information 08/11/2017 Page 82

SAILS/RIGGING How to use the sails on Kipper Kite. MAIN SAIL: The main is nicely shaped and supported by lazy jack lines to contain it when dropped. The main is pre-rigged for two reefs. The mainsail is fully battened. The rigid boom vang and main sheet must be slackened slightly too fully hoist the main. The main halyard is white and blue candy striped led aft on the port side to a Lewmar self-tailing winch on the cabin top. This winch shares the mainsheet (white and blue colors running lengthwise parallel). Each line is marked with its use in the cockpit. Raising the main sail: open the stack pack sail cover and rig the main halyard to the head of the sail prior to leaving the dock or anchorage. To began sailing turn the boat into the wind, loosen the lazy jacks, pull the main halyard to raise the sail, watch that the sail battens do not catch on the lazy jacks. Raise the sail to the desired height and tension the luff with the Main Sheet. Turn to desired point of sail and began sailing. Reefing the main sail: Turn into the wind. Lower the main sail with the main halyard, pull the reefing tack #1 or #2 to trim the luff, pull and winch the reefing clew #1 or #2 to 08/11/2017 Page 83

trim the leach. Retention the Main Halyard: Turn to the desired point of sail and began sailing. Removing the reefs in the main sail: Turn into the wind. Release the reefing tack #1 or #2 and reefing clew #1 or #2 and raise the mainsail and tension the luff using the main halyard. Turn to the desired point of sail and began sailing. All reefing lines run to the cockpit and reefs are easily set and removed. TRAVELER ADJUSTMENT: Mounted on the cabin roof with lines through the Dodger window. Please pull these lines while standing conveniently in the mid ship/forward area of the cockpit aft of the companionway. The holes in the window are located to enable lines to be pulled without damaging the window when standing in the mid ship/forward area of the cockpit. If you kneel on the cockpit seats and pull straight back it puts stress on the window edge and could crease the window. ROLLER FURLING GENOA: The (brand new in 2017) 150% Genoa is furled on a profurl roller furling. It has good sail shape at the full out position. It has a padded luft to maintain good sail shape when rolled in or reefed up to 110%. Please note that slight tension on the roller furling line when deploying the headsail, and on the sheets when furling, prevents problems from either a rat s nest on the drum or wrinkling of the furled sail. Check furling line (tan/black tracer) on port side to make sure that it is free. This line winds around the drum on the forestay as the sail is let out. It is used to furl the sail after sailing. Tacking with the Genoa: Helmsman-turn the boat to the new heading. Crew-keep a slight tension on the loose sheet until the new tack sheet has been winched partially 08/11/2017 Page 84

tight for the point of sail. This prevents the loose sheet from whipping and scuffing the dodger windows. SAILING CHARACTERISTICS Kipper Kite is a high performance Beneteau First series boat designed by Bruce Farr. She moves along nicely in light air with the Genoa eased about 10 inches off the spreaders for maximum drive in light air. Trim tighter as the breeze increases to knots, and ease the jib a bit off to punch through waves in knots. Reef above 15 knots. If it builds further, reef again. If it gets heavier, take the main down and sail with the jib only. On a broad reach, flatten the main by moving the traveler far outboard and 08/11/2017 Page 85

adjusting the Main Sheet before shortening the jib. This will keep her on track. Remember reef early to keep the boat in control and comfortable. SERVICE MANUALS AND TOOLS Where to find tools and service manuals if you have problems. Service Manuals and Tools are located under the Salon table forward seat cushions. Service Manuals in 3 ring binders are contained in a clear plastic container. Tools to service the boat systems are also located in the same storage area. Container with Notebooks for Manuals Tools 08/11/2017 Page 86

SHOWER AND REFRIGERATION DRAINS The two shower sump pumps (one forward and one aft) are controlled by the main DC panel and individual switches in the heads. Both pumps have in-line strainers in the shower drains. If the pumps are not pumping, check the strainers for blockage. Drain after each shower. Remember: excess hair will jam the pump! There is also a drain in the Refrigerator that is activated by the sump pump switch in the aft head. Sump Pump Switch Water is heated while on shore power or engine power. (See p ) Hot water is limited on a sail boat. Experienced cruisers know the sailor s shower: get wet, turn it off. 08/11/2017 Page 87

Soap up. Rinse off. While in port, the best shower is the one available on land in the marina bathing facility! Just remember those quarters. SPARE PARTS We have plenty of engine and boat parts aboard Kipper Kite. They are located primarily underneath the forward berth on the starboard side. Here is what you will see when you On the right side are plastic bins and boxes containing many miscellaneous boat parts. 08/11/2017 Page 88

remove the two mattresses and the plywood covers. The list below is illustrative, not complete. Engine Parts Oil filters Racor filters Webasto filters Yanmar Impellers Starter V-Belts Alternator Voltage regulator Boat Parts Bilge Pump Water pump Wood plugs Propeller Dinghy repair kit LED cabin lights STARTING THE ENGINE Detailed instructions on how to start the engine. 08/11/2017 Page 89

1. Check the oil level. Have paper toweling with you as you do this step. The yellow dipstick is easily accessed behind the companionway steps or behind the panel next to the engine in the starboard stateroom. It is located on the starboard top side of the engine. There is a 1-1/2 inch space between the full and fill marks on the dipstick. Above all, do not overfill. Normal operation of the engine does not require additional oil. If needed, use the onboard spare oil to add no more than a cup at a time. Then check the level again. This is not a car engine where you can add a quart at a time. Overfilling is the worst thing you can do to a diesel. The excess oil will get out somehow, sometimes by blowing the head gasket. So, if the oil is down a bit, please add only a cup at a time. Incidentally, the first time you pull the dipstick; it often has no oil showing. After your heart skips a beat, reinsert the dipstick and the correct level will show. It will be black, of course, as is all oil in diesels after a couple minutes of running. The oil is changed at 100 hour intervals by the charter mechanical staff. 2. Next check the radiator water filter level. This should be done each morning before starting the engine. Check the raw water filter for debris; remove any debris before starting engine. Replace stairs 08/11/2017 Page 90

locking in place to secure. Remember to carefully re-seal the raw water cup. 3. Make sure the gearshift is in neutral. This is important. Depress red button to disengage the transmission and move gearshift forward slightly to run engine in idle when first starting engine. This allows boat to be in neutral. 4. Turn on the ignition key (kept in the top drawer under the chart table). The buzzer should sound. This is the warning buzzer you would hear if the engine overheats or if there is loss of oil pressure. 5. Turn the key to the right. It normally starts immediately. If it doesn t fire right away, stop cranking and let the battery recover. 6. After she starts, check for water gurgling out the exhaust (on the port side). 7. Please allow 3 minutes of warm up before placing the engine in gear. Pushing a cold engine is very hard on diesels. ENGINE OVERHEAT If the buzzer sounds while the engine is running, immediately check the oil pressure and temperature gauges. If oil pressure light is on, shut down the engine, check the oil 08/11/2017 Page 91

level, and contact San Juan Sailing. (We have never had an oil pressure problem and we hope you don t either.) Most likely a buzzer means the engine has overheated. Check for water coming out of the exhaust. If there is no water coming out of the exhaust, the raw water strainer is likely plugged. If the raw water strainer located on the starboard compartment corner of the engine is plugged, clear it by removing the wing nut on top of the strainer. Take the lid off. Extract the filter element. Remove the debris. Reinsert the filter, replace the lid and tighten the wing nut. If the engine overheats again upon Raw Water Filter 08/11/2017 Page 92

restarting, check that the seacock is open and check the lid seal. If it draws air, it won t draw water. STOPPING THE ENGINE NEVER TURN THE ENGINE OFF WITH THE KEY! First make sure the engine is at idle and the gearshift in neutral. Then pull the fuel cutoff plunger valve. When the engine dies, the alarm will sound (like it did when the key was turned before starting) When the engine dies, turn off the key. Pull for engine off If ever the stop cable does not function, the engine can be stopped by using the lever in the battery switch compartment located in the port side aft cabin. Pull the lever out to kill the engine. Note: The engine will run until the fuel in the line is used. 08/11/2017 Page 93

Pull Fuel Lever to stop engine. Then call San Juan Sailing STEREO Fusion Surround Sound AM/FM stereo CD player, TV/DVD/Sirius/Bluetooth enabled We just installed an excellent sound system. The Fusion Surround Sound unit is mounted in the Navigation Station. It has a manual that describes its use, stored in the navigation table. The unit opens to load CDs or DVDs. There are interior speakers and speakers in the cockpit, all of which may be adjusted from this unit. The system is Blue-tooth compatible. 08/11/2017 Page 94

You must first turn on the stereo switch at the electrical panel Stereo Open to insert CD or DVD here Menu Power Button Note: If you turn on the stereo at the electrical circuit panel, you will notice that the small red light for the switch at for electronics switch. This is due to the wiring configuration. SWIM LADDER Kipper Kite is equipped with a swim ladder on the port side stern. It is a telescoping ladder that will make it easier to board the swim platform from the water. It is also an 08/11/2017 Page 95

important safety feature. If you were to fall overboard with no one to help you on the boat, deploy the swim ladder to board the boat at the stern. TETHERS AND JACK LINES There is a yellow bag in under the storage compartment under the forward berth (see page 77) which contains the Tethers and jack lines for heavy weather sailing. You must 08/11/2017 Page 96

have an off-shore PDF with D-Rings to attach the tether. Off-shore PDFs are not supplied on Kipper Kite. You must bring your own. Jack Lines T.V. MONITOR For DVD: You can watch DVDs on the TV monitor. You must first turn on the power switch at the panel in the Nav Station as well as the stereo power switch (see 08/11/2017 Page 97

page 19 ). You load the DVD into the Fusion Unit at the Nav. Station. There is a Fusion remote (stored underneath the chart table) that can be used to control the Fusion. Front of Fusion folds down and you insert DVD inside. For Chartplotter Display: The T.V. Monitor in the salon is wired to be able to display the chart plotter screen at the helm. The chart plotter cannot be manipulated at the T.V. Monitor. The T.V. monitor can only display what is happening at the helm as the chart plotter is used at the helm. Select HD2 on the T.V. Monitor to display the chart plotter. Power button for T.V. VACUUM Kipper Kite is equipped with a Eureka vacuum. It is a small unit but powerful. It has a carpet sweeper, floor brush, and crevice tool. No vacuum bags are required. However, 08/11/2017 Page 98
