2 Itroductio INTERSLEEK 900 THE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY BOTTOM COATING SYSTEM Itersleek 900 is a uique cocept i bottom coatig techology. The Itersleek 900 System is ot like traditioal atifoulig bottom coatigs i that it does ot cotai ay biocides. The Itersleek system cosists of a epoxy primer; a uique silicoe tie coat ad fially a silicoe/fluoropolymer fiish coatig. It is this silicoe/fluoropolymer fiish coatig that is the key to the whole system. Traditioal atifoulig bottom coatigs deped o the release of biocides to repel the adhesio of ad prevet the growth of foulig pests. Itersleek 900 is a dramatic departure from traditioal atifoulig techology. The extremely smooth ad slippery surface of the fiish coat is what is kow as a low surface eergy fiish. Foulig orgaisms geerally have a difficult time formig a attachmet to a low surface eergy fiish ad whe they are successful oly do so very weakly. Therefore, ay ad all foulig orgaism attachmet ca be easily removed. Hece, Itersleek 900 is a foulig cotrol system or foul release bottom coatig system. Itersleek 900 is a amphiphilic coatig that provides a smooth surface that reduces drag ad delivers improved fuel savigs; ships have averaged 6% more fuel savigs over traditioal atifoulig paits. Sailboats will otice icreased speed through the water. All this is achieved without the use of biocides, which clearly differetiates Itersleek 900 from traditioal atifoulig techology. The foul release properties of Itersleek 900 does ot mea your bottom will be free of foulig orgaism growth ad therefore you may see some growth accumulatio, which is easily removable by had. Itersleek 900 will require special maiteace which will isure that you will get optimal performace ad log life from the coatig system. Remember, Itersleek 900 is a low surface eergy coatig, so foulig caot adhere tightly ad ca be easily removed with simple had cleaig methods. These methods iclude spoges, widow squeegees, soft bristle brushes, ad fleece mitts. 4 LAUNCHING THE BOAT Special care must be take whe lauchig your boat oce the Itersleek 900 System has bee applied, to prevet both damage to the system AND to isure the SAFETY of those lauchig the boat. The outer layers of the Itersleek 900 system create a extremely slippery surface. It is this slippery surface that aids i the easy removal of the foulig ad comprises the drag reducig attributes of the system. It also ca create a POTENTIAL BOAT YARD ACCIDENT if ot hadled properly. Preparig for travel lift equipmet 1. Cover the lift straps with two layers of 4-6 mil polyethylee (Vis-Q-ee) double plastic which will allow slippage o the plastic rather tha tearig of the coatig. This is extremely importat you must use two layers of plastic. 2. Secure the plastic to the straps with duct tape i several places. 3. Slit the plastic i several places alog the top ad bottom. This will allow trapped air to escape ad the straps to sik. 4. Tie the straps together with a lie low at the ceterlie ad also high right at the deck level. Use the excess lie from tyig the straps together to secure to a deck cleat i betwee the straps, this will prevet ay shiftig. 6. All ivolved i the lauchig should keep a watchful eye o the boat, ad watch for ay slippage or shiftig of the boat i the straps. The boat ca move very slowly, almost imperceptible to the huma eye, but it ca move several feet i less tha half a hour if improperly supported. Importat: Locate the straps o the hull i a patter that allows them to be as vertical as possible. The boat should always be kept level durig the lift operatio. 6 IN-WATER MAINTENANCE Both the method of uderwater cleaig, ad its frequecy, will affect the success of the performace of your Itersleek 900 system. As there is o active biocide i the Itersleek 900 System, its ability to protect a boat from foulig is depedet upo how frequetly the boat is used, how fast the boat goes, the severity of the foulig coditios where the boat is moored ad the amout of uderwater cleaig. A. NEVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE A HARD METAL, HARD PLASTIC OR WOODEN SCRAPING DEVICE. THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS SHOULD NEVER BE USED: 6 NO scrapers (metal/plastic/wood) 6 NO abrasives (sadpaper/cleaser/ soft scrub) 6 NO Scotch-Brite /3M pads 6 NO solvets 6 NO acids or alkali 6 DO NOT wet sad 6 AVOID groudig or beachig the vessel Usig the products ad procedures listed above to remove weed or shell growth could risk damagig the fiish layer of the Itersleek 900 system. 7 B: Use of the boat The more your boat is used the cleaer it will stay, with miimal uderwater cleaig. With power boats, higher ruig speeds will also cotribute to the self-cleaig properties of the coatig. C: Recommeded cleaig hits A helpful recommedatio for ormal Itersleek 900 cleaig would be to wipe the bottom of the boat dow o a mothly basis. A average 35 sailboat ca be wiped dow i about miutes time usig othig more tha a soft cloth. If this same boat is left for two moths betwee cleaigs it will become a bigger chore ad the risk of damage to the surface durig cleaig icreases. 8 E: Cleaig of specific types of foulig Slime Slime is a complex mixture of brow ad or gree microorgaisms, cosistig of bacteria, diatoms ad ad algae. Oce slime has covered the etire surface of the hull it has created a ew cotact surface for which more advaced forms of foulig, usually weeds ca adhere ad grow. Removal of slime: Slime ca easily be removed with a clea rag. Make certai that divers use othig more tha a soft cloth (i.e. a terry cloth towel or a fleece mitt). Weed True seaweed foulig orgaisms are divided ito three subgroups; gree, brow, ad red. All are foulig growths ad are foud aroud the globe. Each is uique i the way it grows. Like ordiary garde weeds, each of these seaweeds ca oly grow i the presece of light. Gree weeds eed more light tha brow, ad brow eeds more light tha red. This is why gree weed foulig o boat bottoms teds to cocetrate itself ear the waterlie areas. For this reaso, more frequet maiteace at the waterlie is usually required. Whe weed begis to grow it looks like a gree stai at the waterlie. As it matures it becomes filametous ad caot cotiue to remai attached to the Itersleek 900 ad falls off by its ow weight. Removal of weed: Weed ca be easily removed with a clea rag, a fleece mitt or a oe square foot piece of soft high pile carpetig. Shell growth (baracles, mussels, zebra mussels, worms, amphipods, ecrustig bryozoas, etc.) Shell foulig begis as microscopic orgaisms that hatch i the sea. They swim, disperse, ad will ultimately seek to fid a restig place. Whe baracles adhere to the bottom of a boat, they cotiually grow ad exert cosiderable pressure o the area where they are attached. The elastomeric layers of the Itersleek 900 system provides a surface that pushes back ad prevets the baracles from firmly attachig themselves to your boat. 9 HAULING THE BOAT Special care must be take whe haulig the boat, oce the Itersleek 900 System has bee applied, to prevet both damage to the system ad to isure the safety to those hadlig the boat durig ay haul out ad subsequet re-lauchig. The hull coatig is a very slippery, low surface eergy layer ad may cause the liftig straps to move ad slide alog the surface, creatig a hazardous situatio. Itersleek 900 is ot curretly available to all boat yards. Haulouts ad repairs should therefore be scheduled at approved yards which have bee traied i the usage ad maiteace of Itersleek 900. If the boat must be hauled at a boatyard that is ot familiar with the hadlig procedures of Itersleek 900 the ower should iform the yard i writig how to hadle the boat ad provide them with the istructios for haulig the boat. VERY IMPORTANT! PLEASE TAKE NOTE! Preparig the boat If shell growth is preset o the hull, a swimmer/diver must use a log hair, soft brush or fleece mitt to clea off the strap areas to prevet damage to the Itersleek 900 System. This is ecessary oly i the areas where the lift straps will rest. Damage to the fiish could result whe the strap pressure is exerted agaist the fiish, as the boat is lifted by the travel lift from the water. 10 Preparig haul-out equipmet (See Sectio LAUNCHING THE BOAT) 1. Cover the liftig straps with two layers of 4-6 mil polyethylee (Vis-Q-ee) double plastic to allow slippage o the plastic rather tha tearig of the coatig. 11 DRY LAND STORAGE Blockig Wrap clea block pads i double plastic i the same method as was doe with the liftig straps. Isure back-up material is clea ad padded. New carpet is best. The jack stads must be chaied together at the top ad bottom to prevet separatio; both port to starboard ad fore to aft. A bow ad ster chock should also be used. Remember Itersleek 900 is a extremely slippery surface coatig. Most of the weight should be distributed o the keel. Costatly check for creepig ad slippage. Placig the boat i a cradle is the best method for smaller boats. Make sure all chockig pads are padded properly. Affix Dager sigs. If the boat is to stay out of the water for more tha oe day, the bottom should immediately be cleaed with a high pressure washer, or mild soap ad a soft rag or fleece mitt. 12 Blockig techiques Best: Use a welded, steel cross braced cradle. Jack Stads: Use at least three pairs of jack stads with chais at the top ad the bottom, as well as, the fore ad aft. With sailboats, always use bow ad ster chock stads if possible. Some sail boats have a curved bottom to their keels. As a result, they possibly could pivot ad twist about o a axis ad come off the stads. This is due to the extremely slippery fiish of Itersleek 900. These styles of keel boats are best put ito cradles. If ot put i a cradle multiple pairs of stads must be used. The mai weight of the hull should be restig o the keel. 13 OUT OF WATER MAINTENANCE All iformatio i this sectio is extremely importat ad should be read thoroughly. Itroductio The Itersleek 900 system ca be easily damaged by mechaical abrasios. Oe should ever allow ay metal scrapers, wood or hard plastic to come i cotact with the coatig. The surface should ever be saded ad should ever be scrubbed with a abrasive 3M Scotch-Brite pad. Sometimes a combiatio of techiques ca be used to get the best results. Oe should ever use ay pait thier or solvets, as well as, ay strog acids or alkalis for cleaig. Oe should ot use ay cleaers that cotai ay abrasive, o matter what the label says. (i.e.: Ajax, Soft Scrub, etc.) Maual washig If high pressure washer is ot available you ca maually wash the surface to remove the foulig. Use soft cloth or fleece mitt oly. Mild soap such as Joy, Ivory, or Palmolive ca be used. Usig a pressure washer Usig a pressure washer is the best way to clea Itersleek. Use up to a MAXIMUM of 1500 PSI. Nothig higher! Spray at a 45 degree agle to hull surface to prevet shearig or cuttig of the Itersleek coatig. Spray o closer tha 6 iches from the hull to prevet cuttig of the Itersleek coatig. 14 REPAIR These repair procedures are recommeded for those areas which suffer mechaical damage, either before lauchig etc.), or durig the service life. Washig Whe a vessel is hauled for repair, all above the waterlie areas should be fresh water washed prior to the Itersleek 900 area. If high-pressure fresh water washig is carried out at pressures above 1,500 psi, care must be take at the joi to the uderwater hull area to avoid damage to the Itersleek 900 system. The uderwater hull area should the be fresh water washed usig fa jet laces at a maximum pressure of 1500 psi (102 Bar). Rotary heads must ot be used. Fresh water washig should overlap oto the above water area to esure maximum cleaig. The repair procedure recommeded will deped upo the extet of damage ivolved, but ca be split ito: Major repairs A major repair should essetially be dealt with as if the Itersleek 900 System were beig applied for the first time. The recommedatios give earlier for surface preparatio, coatig applicatio, etc. (Sectios 1 & 2) should all be adhered to Mior repairs Mior areas are defied as those where the total breakdow / exposed iterface is restricted to ot more tha 1%, localized as show i the Iterlux Datapla Extet diagrams, ad idividual areas are ot more tha 144i² (12i x 12i) 900 cm² (30 cm x 30 cm)) each. These extets refer to the exposed areas after fresh water washig has bee carried out. The area to be repaired must be fresh water washed, dried, ad the the extet of damage assessed. The repair system depeds o what substrate is exposed: Damaged areas where substrate is exposed The area to be repaired must be fresh water washed, dried, ad the the extet of damage assessed. Sad the bare substrate with 60 or 80-grit sadpaper. Remove the sadig residue. Remove ay detachig Itersleek back to a edge of good adhesio. Apply two coats of IterProtect 3000 to a DFT of 10 mils (254 micros), overlappig oto the itact. Itersleek. If applicatio is by roller, multiple coats may be ecessary to achieve the required film thickess. Observe the recommeded overcoatig iterval betwee coats as give i the primer product data sheet. If Watertite or Iterfill epoxy filler is used to fill ay pittig, it should be applied betwee the first ad secod coats of IterProtect Itersleek 900 Ower Maual 14

15 Apply Itersleek 731, leavig approximately 2i (5cm) of the freshly applied IterProtect 3000 exposed but takig care to cover the prepared damage area. If applicatio is by roller, two coats of Itersleek 731 should be applied, observig a miimum iterval betwee coats equal to the touch dry time of Itersleek 731 at the prevailig temperature refer to the Itersleek 731 data sheet for touch dry times. Whe the Itersleek 731 is hard dry (refer to the Itersleek 731 data sheet for hard dry times) remove the maskig ad lift the edge of the primer. Peel back ad remove the loose IterProtect 3000 ad Itersleek 731 to the edge of the prepared damaged area. A wet rag will help i removig the primer. A sharp edge of Itersleek 731 will be reached, correspodig exactly to the area of damage. Ay remaiig small areas of loose coatig ca be carefully removed usig a sharp kife. Esure that the area is clea, dry ad free from cotamiatio the apply Itersleek 970, to a DFT of 6 mils (150 micros), overlappig the Itersleek 731 by 4i (10cm). If applicatio is by roller, two coats of Itersleek 970 should be applied, observig a miimum iterval betwee coats equal to the touch dry time of Itersleek 970 at the prevailig temperature refer to the Itersleek 970 data sheet for touch dry times. Followig the fial coat of Itersleek 970, observe the miimum time to lauch give o the Itersleek 970 product data sheet. If applicatio is by brush or roller, the followig precautios should be observed: Applicatio by roller Airless spray is the preferred method of applicatio for the Itersleek 900 System, sice it gives the smoothest possible fiish. However, it is possible to repair small areas by applyig the Itersleek 900 System by roller, if the followig precautios are observed: 1. Use a high quality solvet resistat roller whe applyig Itersleek such as a Redtree 3/16 Deluxe Mohair. 2. No thiig of the paits should be carried out. Oce the pait becomes too thick to apply after mixig it should be discarded. 3. Apply oe coat of Itersleek 731 Tie Coat at 4 mils DFT 4. Apply 3 coats of Itersleek 970 Fiish at 2 mils DFT. The coats should be applied withi 3 hours of the previous coat. 16 REPAIR OF THE INTERSLEEK 900 SYSTEM SHOULD ONLY BE UNDERTAKEN BY PERSONNEL THAT HAVE BEEN TRAINED BY INTERLUX. Notify Iterlux immediately should repairs be eeded for your Itersleek 900 System For areas where IterProtect 3000 is exposed For large areas where the primer is exposed, remove to bare surface ad the apply the full system: IterProtect Itersleek 731 Tie Coat + Itersleek 970 Fiish For mior areas where the primer is exposed, grid the surface of the exposed areas with grit sadpaper to provide a mechaical key prior to applicatio of Itersleek 731 Tie Coat ad Itersleek 970 Fiish Repairs to areas where the Itersleek 731 Tie Coat is exposed Esure the area is clea, dry ad free from surface cotamiatio. Remove ay detachig Itersleek 970 Fiish back to a edge of good adhesio by low pressure ( psi; Bar) water jettig. Degrease ad rise the surface of the exposed Itersleek 731 Tie Coat ad surrouds usig a mild, eutral, water-soluble degreaser (Cosult Iterlux for advice regardig approved proprietary degreasers). Apply fresh Itersleek 731 Tie Coat ad Itersleek 970 Fiish i the ormal maer, overlappig oto the existig Itersleek 970 Fiish. Roller applicatio ca be carried out for small areas (see Sectio 4.7). Major areas of exposed Itersleek 731 Tie Coat may be prepared by either: i. Abrasive blastig or water jettig back to the substrate ad re-istatig the full system, or ii. Sad, grid or blast back to the primer to remove all Itersleek 731 Tie Coat from the area to be repaired, ad touchig up with IterProtect 3000 to ay area that is exposed. 17 TROUBLESHOOTING Throughout the course of the year there will be uavoidable situatios which may cause damage to the Itersleek 900 System. Below are listed several of the most commo istaces ad what ca be doe to fix the situatio. 1 Groudig / Impact damage / Abrasio Descriptio: The coatig is scraped off a area ad foulig has begu to adhere directly to the tie coat primer, the epoxy or the gelcoat; depedig upo the amout of layers which have bee exposed by the extet of the damage. Cause: Self explaatory impact of a i-water object. Scrapig/Rippig ca also occur durig a travel lift operatio if proper care is ot take. Repair Procedure: Sad the area back to the epoxy (or gelcoat if the abrasio is completely through system). Reapply etire system i the saded area per the system specificatios. If heavy foulig cotiually reoccurs, the waterlie may possibly have to be repaited. Cause: Mobile compoets i the IterProtect 3000 migratig to the surface. Repair Procedure: Should ot be repaired. This is cosmetic oly ad will dimiish over time. It will ot ihibit the performace of the Itersleek 900 System i ay way. Whe the boat is left out for 2 days the atmospheric exposure will cause the pik stais to fade. Descriptio: Could be ay umber of pollutats that comprise overboard discharge from a vessel plus other exteral factors. Cause: Water Pollutio Repair Procedure: Various retail products for the boat ower ca be used depedig o the type of stai. As we experiece ay problems we will update the list of solutios. This will help tremedously should you experiece some type of coatig problem or fid yourself i eed of repair. The more iformatio you have, the better Iterlux is able to help i fidig the solutio. Keep track of the followig: 1. Where is the boat kept? Name of Maria/Harbor Maria/harbor cotact What type of water? (Fresh/Salt/Brackish/Cold/Warm) 2. Usage Whe used ad for what legth of time Average ruig speed Where used Date ad egie hours 3. Cleaig Date of cleaig By whom? Time Betwee cleaigs With what method? Pressure wash/scrub/wipe dow... 19 MISCELLANEOUS Special circumstaces Trailerig Although this is ot geerally recommeded due to the probability of damage to the pait, it ca be doe. Prior to placig the boat o the trailer, the bottom should be completely cleaed with fresh water. It is importat that the areas of the trailer that are to be i cotact with the boat are clea. If a skid type trailer is used, the skids should be covered with 2 layers of heavy 4-6 mil Vis-Q-ee plastic sheetig ad watched carefully as the boat is slid ito the trailer to esure that there are always 2 layers of plastic betwee the boat ad skid. It is importat that the boat is slidig betwee the plastic layers ad ot o the paited surface. Liftig the boat with a crae is preferred over draggig it oto the trailer. If a larger boat is lifted oto a trailer with poppets, the poppets should be covered i soft carpet ad double layer plastic covered. It is especially importat whe trailerig boats with the Itersleek 900 system that they are secured from ay movemet by multiple taut ropes ad straps i fore/aft ad port/starboard directios ad checked costatly e route. Importat: I regard to trailers it is importat to isure that all rollers are cleaed ad checked to isure that they are all rotatig properly ad do ot damage the fiish.
