1 Ketchikan Yacht Club Newsletter July 2002 Current Soundings Commodore s Comments By Roger Maynard: With Adell gone for the summer, there has been no June newsletter, but here is the July edition, with a few items to bring everyone up to speed on club happenings: Stolen Boat recovered by alert KYC member. Avid sailboat racer and enthusiast Jim Dahl couldn't help but notice when a small Santa Cruz 27 racing sailboat parked at City Float, right in front of his waterfront office. The boat was set up for racing, had no dinghy, and had the name "TILT" marked with tape on the stern. Always looking for new converts, Jim was hoping the sailboat was a new addition to the racing fleet in Ketchikan. Later, when looking through a "48 degree North" boating magazine, Jim saw a halfpage notice about a similar sailboat stolen from Port Townsend last month. Being basically a civic-minded sort, Jim decided to call the number in the advertisement and inform the owner of the stolen boat of his observations. To make a long story short, the message was relayed to Ketchikan Police, and after a short investigation the boat's lone occupant was led away in handcuffs. Nice work, Jim! The boat's owner, Dave Garman, arrived in Ketchikan on Tuesday, June 25, On Wednesday, June 26, 2002 we assisted him in hauling the boat, cleaning and preparing the boat and trailer for shipment back to Washington State. Wednesday morning he was on KRBD Radio, and Wednesday evening he raced with Sally Hansen on her Santa Cruz 27 (KERMIT) and she aced both races! Afterward, at Bar Harbor Restaurant, Dave was appointed an honorary KYC member, and presented with a burgee to fly on his race to Hawaii next month. Note: The Ketchikan Daily News is following this story, and 48 degrees North has already called Jim for details. Expect to see more on this in next month's magazine. Transient Moorage is booming! During early May we began to see transient boaters in their annual migration north via the Inside Passage, and most nights our dock has been full. Encouraged by day after day of sunshine and a trend away from airline travel, cruisers have been coming in record numbers. Clubhouse and dock activities (potlucks, barbecues and brunches) are often filled with interesting new people and stories. Come join the fun! We have noticed a trend toward larger boats; therefore I have temporarily moved Camai over to a vacant stall on the "short" side of the dock so we can have one more "long" slip for transients. If anyone else is able to make similar adjustments for the benefit of the club, please let me know. Port Captain Jack Engstrom deserves a special thanks for his dedicated and smooth handling of transient boaters as they come and go. Thanks to his efforts we can be Page 1
2 confident that, providing we write our return date on the bull-rail plaque, our stall will be available at the end of each cruise. The KYC "SAFETY BOAT" is up and running. One of the assets returned to the Yacht Club by the Sailing Foundation is the 13-1/2 foot Boston Whaler skiff that was used as a safety boat for the KCSF sailing program. It took three days of considerable effort to clean and prepare the boat for use, and now it is on the skiff float, ready for action. We expect to use the skiff to set sailboat racing marks, provide safety patrol during races, provide safety patrol for dinghy sailors, or to assist KYC yachts that need parts, fuel, towing or other services that can appropriately be provided in this small skiff. This represents one more step in preparation for starting the youth sailing program next year. We are exploring ways to generate income with the skiff so it is a self-supporting addition to the club. "New" look for KYC Clubhouse. Our May 18th painting party was a huge success, with a crew of about 10 members present and a bright, sunny day for the project. Many thanks to all of the members who participated; with your help we were done by mid-afternoon, and the Clubhouse and fences look brand-new. We are still looking for volunteers to repair and upgrade the Youth Sailing float, to install the hood over the stove in the galley, and to install the floodlight for the flagpole. The BIGP Grant has strong support: ***** WEEKLY ACTIVITIES***** Sunday morning brunches: Every Sunday for the rest of the summer, have breakfast at the Yacht Club between 9:00 and 11:00. Most Sundays have had big turnouts and breakfasts have been great! We're always looking for volunteers -- pick a Sunday and cook up something new for the club gourmet's! Contact Sheila Engstrom for more information. Friday afternoon barbecues: Our most popular clubhouse activity has turned out to be the Friday afternoon barbecue between 4:30 and 7:30. Come grab a burger after work, then hit the water for your weekend cruise--or stay and visit. Serve yourself; burgers and fixin's are available in the galley. Friday afternoon recreational sail: Come out when the weather is nice and herd your sailboat around the bay with the other sailors. There are only a few rules like, "Have Fun," and "Don't Hit Anybody." Impromptu speed matches are encouraged, and there will be some burgers and fixin's at the clubhouse later if you're hungry (burgers in the freezer; fixin's in the fridge.) Wednesday evening after-race dinners: Bar Harbor Restaurant is serving dinner after the Wednesday sailboat races; just stop in and place your order. Enjoy some of the best food in town and listen to the racing sailors as they re-live the afternoon's events. See you on the water! Roger Maynard Members present at the May 14th special meeting voted overwhelmingly to support upgrading the clubhouse using federal BIGP funding that is available. The trustees appreciate your support and will present this project to the city council in early July. We'll continue to keep everyone informed of our progress. Page 2
3 DOCK TALK By Sheila Engstrom to sign up for any Sunday through Labor Day. The little mink has been sighted running along under the dock in front of the clubhouse. Some have named her the KYC mink because her regular route is so close to us. She is fat and sassy and has a nice reddish coat. Nugget Maynard and Daisy Terrell, our four legged members spy her with great interest. Poncho Eakes has expressed some interest, but he is usually too busy to notice. Kay and Larry Meehan have a first grandchild, Hannah,a girl that arrived in June...Brian Lieb was seen on the docks in June, and so was Hunter St. Clair. Brian is working in Anchorage and Hunter is an engineer on one of the (little) ships that frequents our big city docks...also seen around the club was Jack Hovden, over from Craig. Cliff and Joyce Gardner, and Herb and Shirley Lee have been in town from Meyers Chuck and they invite club members out to the Chuck, and to stop in for a cup of coffee. Congratulations to Jean and Louie on their 40 th wedding anniversary. Ed. Welcome Back Every One! Summer is in full swing and you all seem in good sprits. The sun has been good to us. Important decisions have been made to take advantage of our fair weather and get much needed boat jobs done--the house can wait. The clubhouse has a new face, with many members helping to paint. Our Commodore was a one man "Spiderman," prepping the building for 3 days before the paint job. Around the dock we have had lots of visitors and their pets (who follow all the rules) along with lots of activity at the clubhouse. Many members and guests have enjoyed the Friday night BBQ's and Sunday Breakfasts. Sunday Breakfast features volunteer cooks and the entire breakfast routine has been a great dining experience. Serving time is from 9 am to 11 am every Sunday. KYC is lucky to have volunteers, but we are beating the bushes to find more cooks. Call Sheila Speaking of Meyers Chuck locals, Jerry and Theresa Gucker have moved out there, so you might find them wandering along a path or two. The Hot Chocolate crowd (owners of the 1- meter radio-controlled sailboats) is almost in motion to build the rest of the fleet. Jack Engstrom, who owns and built the little yellow one, has offered to assist Roger, Dwight, Tommy, and Jim and MaryLynne (who have offered a space to build them). The original idea was to race these little ones on cold days, from the porch, while sipping hot chocolate. However, warm days would be grand for racing, and sipping a beer. KYC now has the Boston Whaler Safety boat rigged and ready, with some restrictions, for use. Check with Commodore Roger Maynard for more information. The racing gang is up and running, so look for them out on the water on Wed. night. They meet at Bar Harbor Restaurant after the races for dinner and libations. Come join in. All are invited. Page 3
4 Don't forget Friday Night BBQ's EVERY Friday night. Time: 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm or later. KYC furnishes all food. YOU bring soda or beer and cook your own. ENJOY. A special thanks goes to Cheryl Hallman and Bill Goodale for bringing dessert on the 3 rd Friday of every month this summer. We love it! Have you noticed the flowers this season? Carole Galloway, and Deb Davis selected them and Carole is our gardener. The flowers are looking very smart this year. Lots of color, and herbs too. KORC is coming! The biggest Sailing Event of the year will be July 10 th 11 th, 12 th, 13 th, and 14 th. The first 3 days of post race activities will be held at the Clubhouse. Saturday (13 th ) night will be a costume party at Maryanne and Dwight's house. Sunday (14 th ) awards dinner will be held at Jim and Marylynne's house. This is the 21 st year of KORC...Come out and Race and party with the racers. That s all the news for now. Remember, a happy, happy boat is one with an owner on it. Sailing, powering, being worked on, or just sitting relaxing with its owner---it s happy. SAE Upcoming Activities Wednesday Night Races, at 1800 hours, you can race or watch! Louie, Louie Race, Friday night at 1800 for Fun! BBQ at the clubhouse afterwards KORC July Trustees Meeting: July 16 at 1800 hrs Tri-Island Race: July 20 From the Secretary A project from this spring is finally complete (step one). We have new t-shirts (white, navy and athletic gray). They are embroidered just like our hats. T-shirts are $ And soon, we will have pins (for hat/lapel/jacket) of our burgee. We are working on coffee mugs, too. Since we now have camera-ready art, getting new items for sale is a whole lot easier. You can still get the few pink t-shirts that are left for $ I am starting to work on the 2002 Yacht Club Directory.
