4 ABOUT THE RACE The 2018 Golden Globe Race is a race like no other. It is a solo, non-stop, completely unassisted sailing race around the world using only 1960 s technology celebrating the golden age of solo ocean racing marks 50 years since the first ever person managed to sail solo, non-stop around the world in what was the original Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. In 1968, nine boats left the UK in a race to make history. Only one boat managed to make it to the finish line and into the history books, skippered by Sir Robin Knox Johnston. Six of the other competitors retired and one competitor Donald Crowhurst was lost at sea, presumed having taken his own life. He had tried to falsify his route having never left the Atlantic and it is thought he broke under the strain of his lies. The Frenchman Bernard Moitessier, pulled out on the final stage to save his soul and continued sailing around the world ending in Tahiti. Since less than 200 people have managed this feat while over 500 have been into space and nearly 8000 have climbed Everest. The only other solo, around the world race is the Vendee Globe, which relies on cutting edge technology and advanced systems to make it around in the fastest possible time. To date, no Irish person has completed the challenge of sailing solo, non-stop around the world. Fifty years on, the 2018 edition of this legendary race limits technology to what was available in the 1960 s with the exception of modern safety equipment. This means the competitors will navigate with a compass and sextant using the stars and sun to pinpoint their position, harvesting rainwater to survive and using only radios as a means of communicating. The boats are older, sturdy and very seaworthy with no modern technology like carbon fibre allowed. This means the race will take around 9 months, a stark contrast to modern, high performance racing boats which can now take less than 80 days. There are 30 boats entered in this race, the maximum amount permitted with more on the waiting list. There are 14 different nationalities represented and Gregor is the only Irish entrant. 7 ABOUT GREGOR FROM DREAM TO REALITY From a young age Gregor had a natural affinity towards adventure and the outdoors. He spent his youth exploring the mountains around Wicklow, devouring stories of adventure and exploration. When he was 19, thirsty for more adventure he went to study Outdoor Education with the Shackleton course in Dublin. This is when Gregor first experienced sailing and really began to develop his love of the sea. After several years teaching sailing and watersports around Ireland, it was a visit to the stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race in Galway that was to change everything. Seeing the challenge and adventure that ocean sailing could offer, his goal was now set on sailing around the world. Gregor then went to the Isle of Wight to train as an Ocean Yachtmaster giving him the skills he required to sail competently offshore. Afterwards he went on to work as a delivery skipper, moving yachts around the world and he very quickly amassed a large amount of experience. He has crossed the Atlantic several times, crossed the Indian Ocean, competed in the Fastnet Race and has done countless other races and voyages around the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Europe covering around 50,000 miles, however this wasn t enough. Upon seeing an article in a magazine about the Golden Globe Race, Gregor got in touch with the race organisers to find out more. After a quick response he discovered there was still one invitation left. There was no doubt about what had to be done. Within a few hours Gregor had managed to secure an invitation to compete in the 2018 Golden Globe Race giving him the opportunity to live out his dream of racing around the world. Enda O Coineen is the first ever Irish person to compete in the Vendee Globe Race, entering the 2016/2017 edition which attracts millions of followers and viewers on a daily basis. 14 PRE RACE COVERAGE UPDATES For the year building up to the start, we will be releasing regular video updates compiled with our media partner, Replay House. These will be a summary of the preparations with footage of the vessel sailing and interviews with the team and skipper. This will be broadcast out on all media channels associated with the campaign along with the official Golden Globe Race media channels. TOUR We will be undertaking a tour of Ireland in the months coming up to the race. This will involve sailing the boat around the country stopping in ports along the way. There will be events organised for these stopovers in association with local businesses and our supporters. The 2 week build-up to the start will involve a large Race Village. This will be a public event and the teams will have a dedicated space for on-site leverage activities. There will also be a public stage with nightly entertainment. GOLDEN GLOBE RACE SPONSORSHIP 14
15 COVERAGE DURING THE RACE Prior to the race, a library of stock footage and images will be amassed. These will be used to suplement text updates through out the race. UPDATES During the race we will be releasing daily updates paired with segments from our large library of stock images and footage. The Race HQ will be releasing daily text position and situation updates along with 40 weekly video updates throughout the race. These will be distributed through international media outlets. There will be twice daily position updates from all the competitors that will be updated through all channels including the app. APP & GAME A subscription free app will provide live streaming of video and audio recordings along with whatever other content is published by Race HQ. Live positions of entrants will also be constantly visible from the on-board satellite trackers. This will use the same platform of the hugely sucessful Vendee Globe Race App. Fans will be able compete with their own virtual boat against the Golden Globe competitors using the platform. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME We have partnered with the publisher CJ Fallon to run a free nationwide educational programme during the race. The focus of this will be on Ocean Literacy, specifically towards Ireland s Marine environment. Ocean Literacy is defined as Understanding the ocean s influence on us and our influence on the ocean. We are also working with organisations around the country to create a meaningful and relevent content. Our aim is to educate young people about Ireland s marine environment and the industries and organisations that utilise it, developing an awareness and caring attitude to our effects on it. 16 POST RACE COVERAGE DOCUMENTARY AND FILM After the race finishes the race organisers will be releasing a part documentary series followed by a feature length film that will be distributed through international media outlets. This will be managed by the TV Production company Sunset Vine who have partnered with the race organisers. These will cover the story of the 2018 Golden Globe Race and the competitors involved. Each boat can carry onboard a series of Big brother cameras that the skippers can activate during the race to film what is happening along with keeping video diaries. This footage will then be taken by the race HQ and compiled into the documentary series and feature length film. RACE FINISH Upon completion of the race, the race village from the start will be re-created with great celebrations for the competitors upon their return. It is required for the competitors to remain here for at least a week after they arrive and also to remain available for when the following competitors return. This will allow for greater media coverage and excitement as the race concludes. We will be organising a large event in Ireland after the race concludes to welcome the boat and skipper home. This will be in the weeks after the finish of the race as the vessel returns to Ireland. We will be promoting this in the weeks coming up to the finish and will also be giving talks on the race and Gregor s experiences as part of this home-coming. GOLDEN GLOBE RACE SPONSORSHIP 16

20 THE BOAT The Biscay 36 is the ideal vessel for the race as it is a very sturdy design with excellent speed potential. Currently named Mary Luck, it was designed in 1979 by renowned naval architect Alan Hill as a strong and comfortable ocean cruising boat. The model Gregor will be racing was launched in 1984 and was the 25th launched from a total of around 35. It is the maximum permitted length at 36 feet and paired with this it is ketch rigged with a moderate displacement. Together these make the Biscay 36 highly capable and an extremely competitive.
