The organising committee has been working hard within the time constraints to get everything in place. Fortunately the Finns are having their nationals the week before and by sharing resources we have been able to make both the events more viable. Attached please find the race documentation and entry forms note there is a late entry premium for entries after 21 September 2017, so get your entries in sooner rather than later. Accommodation: Pine Lake Marina: Because it is school holiday time, booking at Pine Lake Marina is already tight. Only chalets available - no camping allowed. Any sailors wishing to stay at the venue are advised to book without delay by telephone: or reservations@pinelakemarina.co.za Swartvlei Caravan Park: A basic but well run caravan park, on Swartvlei Beach and only 5 km on a tar road from the sailing venue. Has plenty of room and shade even in school holidays. Run by the Eden District Council - telephone Sites with electricity (in season rate because of school holiday) R 295 without power, R 345 with electricity. Sedgefield Village: Only 10km from the venue has a wide range of both up-market and budget B&B accommodation. 4 2017 Sonnet Nationals Sanctioned 7 September 2017 Sonnet SAS National Class Championship 2017 Will be sailed at Pine Lake Marina, Swartvlei, Western Cape> From 30 September 2017 to 03 October 2017 NOTICE OF RACE The Regatta is organized by the Sonnet Class Association in conjunction with George Lakes Yacht Club under the auspices of South African Sailing (SAS). 1 RULES 1.1 The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) The South African Sailing Requirements for National Championships will apply. 1.3 Boats participating in this regatta shall conform to the Equipment Rules of Sailing (ERS) , the Class Rules of the Sonnet Class, this Notice of Race, and the Sailing Instructions. 2 ADVERTISING Advertising is permitted subject to the limitations of ISAF Regulation 20. Boats May be required to display advertising chosen and supplied by the organising authority. 3 ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY 3.1 In accordance with the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Regulation 19 (Eligibility Code), all competitors (Helmspersons and all other crew) shall be members in good standing of a Yacht Club affiliated to and in good standing with South African Sailing or their Member National Authority in the case of non-south Africans. The Yacht Club name and membership details shall be stated on the entry form or crew list. Current valid South African Sailing Membership Cards or similar proof of MNA Membership in cases of non-south Africans shall be presented at Registration. All Helmspersons shall also be members of the Sonnet Class refer The regatta is open to all boats of the above listed class.

(b) When from 5 to 9 races have been completed, a boat s series score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score. (c) When 10 or more races have been completed, a boat s series score will be the total of her races excluding her two worst scores. 7 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP REQUIREMENTS In order to qualify as a National Class Championship the following criteria shall be satisfied: * A minimum of ten valid entries have been received no later than the closing time for entries, no later than one hour before the scheduled starting time of the first race * At least ten finishers in any two races of the series. * At least four races completed. 8 SAFETY 8.1 Yachts shall comply with their class buoyancy and safety requirements. 8.2 All competitors shall wear a personal buoyancy aid capable of supporting a 5- kg steel weight at all times while afloat in a yacht. 8.3 Wet or dry suits do not constitute adequate buoyancy! 8.4 Additional safety requirements may be set out in the Sailing Instructions. 9 SUPPORT BOATS Coach or individual support boats shall be marked with a White Flag and shall remain no less than 150m from areas where boats are racing, between the

7 Preparatory Signal and the last competitor finishing the race. Non-compliance with this rule may lead to action under RRS RADIO COMMUNICATION Except in an emergency, a boat shall neither make radio transmissions while racing nor receive radio communications not available to all boats. This restriction also applies to mobile telephones. 11 PRIZES Prizes will be given as follows: SAS Medals will be awarded in accordance with the Requirements for National Championships, as follows: boats Gold boats Gold & Silver 20 or more boats Gold, Silver and Bronze Class Prizes will also be awarded 12 DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. NOTICE TO COMPETITORS Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board(s) located at Swartvlei Pine Lake Marina Sports Centre. 3. CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS Any change to the sailing instructions will be posted before 09h00 on the day it will take effect, except that any change to the schedule of races will be posted by 18h00 on the day before it will take effect. 4. SIGNALS MADE ASHORE 4.1 Signals made ashore will be displayed at the Sports Centre flag pole. 4.2 When flag AP is displayed ashore, 1 minute is replaced with not less than 20 minutes in the race signal AP. 5. 9 5.2 Number of races: A maximum of 12 are scheduled for the regatta. 5.3 When there has been a long postponement and when more than one race (or sequence of races) will be held on the same day, the Warning Signal for the first race and each succeeding race will be made as soon as practicable. To alert boats that a race or sequence of races will begin soon, Flag L will be displayed before a Warning Signal is displayed. The Warning Signal will be made 1 minute after the lowering of Flag L. 5.4 On the last day of the regatta no Warning Signal will be made after 14h CLASS FLAGS The Sonnet Class flag will be used. 7. RACING AREAS Racing will take place on Swartvlei. 8. THE COURSES 8.1 The diagrams in Addendum 1 show the courses, including the approximate angles between legs, the order in which marks are to be passed, and the side on which each mark is to be left. 8.2 No later than the Warning Signal, The Race Committee signal boat will indicate the course to be sailed displaying the appropriate numeral pennant, or by displaying the course number on a board on the signal boat. 9. MARKS 9.1 Marks 1,2,and 3 will be will be orange conical buoys. 9.2 The starting and finishing marks will be a Committee Boat flying an orange flag and an orange conical buoy. 9.3 New/replacement marks, as provided in RRS THE START 10.1 Races will be started by using RRS 26 with the Warning Signal given 5 minutes before the starting signal The starting line will be between the mast displaying an Orange Flag on the Committee boat and the nearby orange conical buoy A boat starting later than 4 minutes after her starting signal will be scored Did Not Start. This changes RRS A4 and A CHANGE OF THE NEXT LEG OF THE COURSE 11.1 To change the next leg of the course, the Race Committee will move the original mark (or the finishing line) to a new position Boats shall pass between the Race Committee boat signaling the change of the next leg and the nearby mark, leaving the mark to port and the Race Committee boat to starboard. This changes RRS The direction of the changed leg shall be indicated according to RRS 33(a)(2) [red / green flags / shapes] 12. THE FINISH The finishing line will be between the mast displaying an Orange Flag on the Committee boat and the

10 nearby orange conical buoy. 13. SHORTENING COURSE In the event of the course being shortened RRS 32.2 applies. In addition to RRS 32, the Race Committee may shorten the course immediately after the leading boat rounds Mark 3. Boats shall then proceed directly to the prescribed finish line, crossing the line from the direction of mark PENALTY SYSTEM 14.1 Rule 44.1 applies. 15. TIME LIMITS Boats failing to finish within 20 minutes after the first boat sails the course and finishes will be scored Did Not Finish. This changes RRS 35, A4 and A PROTESTS AND REQUESTS FOR REDRESS 16.1 Protest forms are available at the Race Office. Protest shall be delivered there within the protest time limit The protest time limit is 90 minutes after the last boat has finished the last race of the day. The same time limit applies to protests by the Race Committee and Protest Committee about incidents they observe in the racing area and to requests for redress. This changes RRS 61.3 and Notices will be posted within 30 minutes of the protest time limit to inform competitors of hearings and times thereof in which they are parties or named as witnesses. Hearings will be held in the Sports Centre Notices of protest by the Race Committee or Protest Committee will be posted to inform boats under RRS 61.1(b) A list of boats that have acknowledged breaking RRS 42 or have been disqualified by the (Protest Committee) (jury) will be posted before the protest time limit On the last day of the regatta a request for reopening a hearing shall be delivered. (a) within the protest time limit if the requesting party was informed of the decision on the previous day; (b) no later than 30 minutes after the requesting party was informed of the decision that day. This changes RRS On the last day of the regatta a request for redress from a Protest Committee decision shall be delivered no later than 30 minutes after the decision was posted. 11 18.1 Yachts shall comply with their class buoyancy and safety requirements All competitors shall wear a personal buoyancy aid capable of supporting a 5 kg steel weight at all times while afloat in a yacht Wet or Dry suits do not constitute adequate buoyancy A boat that retires from a race shall notify the Race Committee as soon as possible. 19. REPLACEMENT OF CREW OR EQUIPMENT 19.1 Substitution of competitors will not be allowed without prior approval of the Race Committee Substitution of damaged or lost equipment will not be allowed unless approved by the Race Committee. Requests for substitution shall be made in writing to the Race Committee at the first reasonable opportunity. 20. EQUIPMENT AND MEASUREMENT CHECKS A boat or equipment may be inspected at any time for compliance with the Class Rules and Sailing Instructions. On the water, a boat can be instructed by a Race Committee Measurer to proceed immediately after the completion of a race to a designated area for inspection. 21. SUPPORT BOATS Coach or individual support boats shall be marked with a White Flag and shall remain no less than 150m from areas where boats are racing, between the Preparatory Signal and the last competitor finishing the race. Non-compliance with this rule may lead to action under RRS TRASH DISPOSAL Boats shall not discard trash in the water. Trash may be placed aboard support and Race Committee boats. 23. RADIO COMMUNICATION A boat shall neither make radio transmissions while racing nor receive radio communications not available to all boats. This restriction also applies to mobile telephones. 24.
