With the help of the Barbados Olympic Association, and through the International Olympic Committee's Coaching Aid Programme, an International Yacht Racing Union (IYRU) Coach, Mr. Roy Partridge, was brought to Barbados to run the summer sailing programme. Roy, a former British and World Mirror Dinghy Champion, was accompanied by his wife, Mena, and they stayed in a caravan next to the Sailing Select Barbados 33
2 THE RHUMB LINE The fleet of brand new Topper dinghies with members of the Barbados Yachting Association (Photo Courtesy Barbados Sailing Association) Centre on Brighton Beach. At least he didn't have far to travel to work. During his six weeks in Barbados, Roy, a stickler for safety and precision, conducted basic and advanced courses for about seventy youngsters from the age of nine years. These youngsters were not only taught the basics of sailing, but also boat maintenance and repairs. Instructors were also given valuable training and were presented with International Olympic Committee certificates at the end of the summer. When he left at the end of the summer of 1986, Roy said how impressed he was with the enthusiasm of the youngsters he had taught. However, he went on to say that if they were to do well in overseas competitions, then 'practice and more practice' was necessary. These comments led to the development of what BYYTA called "Ongoing Sailing". Instead of holding sailing courses during the summer holidays only, weekend sailing was introduced as well. To encourage as many youngsters as possible to take part, emphasis was placed on trophy winning, and a party was held at the Sailing Centre at the end of each six week course. Roy returned to Barbados to run the summer sailing courses in both 1987 and 1988, and he was followed in 1989 by Jeremy Linn, a young instructor, also from England. During these years, BYYTA saw another family becoming heavily involved in its programme, with Maureen and Douglas MacKenzie taking on the onshore, organizational duties whilst their children enjoyed the sailing. Thanks to the hard work of the MacKenzies and the continual help of the late Courtney Thompson, the fleet of Mirror dinghies was kept afloat. By the mid '80s, dinghy sailing was growing throughout the Caribbean, and 1986 saw St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands host the second Caribbean Yachting Association's Dinghy Championships. Barbados sent an eightman team to the Championships, managed and coached by veteran sailor, Tony Hoad. Whilst the team performed creditably, it was the younger members of the team, all graduates of BYYTA's sailing programme, who shone the most. August of 1987 saw Barbados host the third Caribbean Dinghy Championships, with six of BYYTA's young sailors taking 34 Select Barbados
3 part in the Mirror Class, together with several others, including instructors, in other classes. Again, the younger Barbadian sailors were the most successful, emerging overall winners of the Mirror Class. The dreams of the founder members of BYYTA, Bill Highton, Peter Evelyn, and Dennis Lacey were beginning to be realized, as a younger generation of Barbadian sailors was beginning to follow in the footsteps of Barbados' veterans, representing Barbados at the international level. In 1987, two of BYYTA's past pupils, Shane Atwell and Randal Valdez, represented Barbados in the Pan American Games held in Michigan City. In the following year, 1988, at age eighteen, Shane went on to represent Barbados in the Finn Class at the Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. The early '90s saw BYYTA's sailing programme continuing to flourish, with its young sailors representing Barbados at the Caribbean Dinghy Championships held annually in different Caribbean islands. Mr. Roy Partridge, Chief Instructor in 1986, '87 and '88 (Photo: Maureen MacKenzie) Chief Instructors included Canadians Simon MacDonald and Simon Evison in 1990 and 1991, and Barbadians Mark Harris and Mark Weatherhead in 1992 and In the summer of 1994, BYYTA benefitted greatly from having a second IYRU coach, Australian Bill Dooley, who came to Barbados under the auspices of the Olympic Solidarity Fund and the Barbados Olympic Association. Throughout these years, the Mirrors were kept in sailing order by the tireless efforts of Courtney Thompson, assisted by young instructor, Ezra Norville. Also in the summer of 1994, youth yachting got a major boost with the arrival of twenty brand new Topper dinghies. Topper International, the UK manufacturer of the dinghy, was very keen to increase the global spread of the class in an attempt to get it introduced into the Olympics. BYYTA took advantage of this and solicited sponsorship from local companies to purchase the boats. Any company sponsoring a boat was then able to place the company's logo on the deck and sail. Being Barbados' turn to host the Caribbean Dinghy Championships in August, 1994, the arrival of the Toppers couldn't have been timelier. The Toppers were an excellent addition to BYYTA's fleet, being light in weight, and easy to rig and sail, having only a mainsail. They were also big enough to hold two Select Barbados 35
4 THE RHUMB LINE Echo 12s rounding a mark (Photo: Peter Marshall) students and were virtually indestructible. In order to encourage youngsters to sail as much as possible, BYYTA made the Toppers available to all its junior sailors free of charge to sail at any time. In 1996, Barbados was again represented on the international scene by a sailor who began his sailing career with BYYTA back in This time, Rodney Reader travelled to the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta where he sailed in the Laser class, this class having been introduced into the Olympics for the first time at the Atlanta Games. By the mid '90s, security at the Brighton Sailing Centre had become a serious problem and so it was decided to move the home of youth yachting back to the Barbados Yacht Club. Chief Instructor at the time, Ezra Norville, now a UWI student, continued to maintain the fleet of Mirrors. However, it was evident that the boats were definitely beginning to age and, being built of plywood, they were in constant need of repair, often having to be rebuilt in time for the summer courses. Various options were looked at to replace the Mirror fleet, including building Mirrors locally out of fibreglass. In the end, ten two-man, Canadian built, Echo 12 dinghies were purchased in 1999, again with sponsorship from local Barbadian companies. These boats still have the companies' logos on their decks today. Carrying three sails like a Mirror, these boats had the advantage over the Toppers in that youngsters were still able to learn how to handle a main, jib, and spinnaker. With the arrival of the Echos, and having a new home at the Yacht Club, BYYTA, now called the Barbados Sail Training Association (BSTA), continued to thrive, offering both summer courses and Saturday classes with Russell Streeter as Chief Instructor. The summer of 1999 also saw four young Barbadian sailors, Laura Williams, Hassan Khan, Peter Murray, and Alex Warren represent Barbados at the International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA) World Championships in Martinique. This stimulated a great deal of interest in the Optimist dinghy which was seen as the way forward to teach sailing to the very young. Being just less than eight feet in length, light in weight, very stable and having only a mainsail, children as young as five or six years can begin to learn the rudiments of sailing in an Optimist. Today, the Optimist class is the largest and most competitive youth racing class in the world, the dinghies being the main training ground for future 36 Select Barbados Select Publishing Inc. 5 Olympic sailors - over 60% start out in Optimist dinghies. With all this in mind, the Barbados Optimist Dinghy Association was formed in 2001, and twelve Optimist dinghies were brought into Barbados from Spain. Under Chief Instructor Peter Hoad, BODA began to run Saturday courses as well as summer courses for youngsters as young as six years old, and some of its young sailors began to enter the international arena, representing Barbados in the IODA World Championships. In 2002, Gregory Douglas and Jason Tindale, both twelve years old, represented Barbados in the Championships in Corpus Christie, Texas and the following year saw them travel to Gran Canaria. The team increased in size in 2004, when Gregory and Jason were joined by Lily Dash, Sarah Douglas, and Holly Trew at the Championships in Salinas, Ecuador. From here, Gregory went on to launch his Olympic campaign which saw him being awarded a wild card to represent Barbados in the just concluded Beijing Olympics in the Laser class, like Shane Atwell before him, at the young age of eighteen years. Since 2001, both associations, BSTA and BODA, have continued to teach youngsters to sail during the school holidays and on Saturdays, and the Barbados Sailing Association has continued to send teams of young sailors to the annual Caribbean Dinghy Championships. In the summer of 2007, the BSTA was extremely fortunate to be able to enlist the expertise of a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Instructor, James Brown, as Chief Instructor, thanks to the funding from the Olympic Solidarity Fund. As recipient of the RYA UK Under-21 Racing Coach of the Year Award, James brought with him a wealth of enthusiasm and experience which he passed on to those he taught, as well as to the BSTA instructors who worked with him. This past summer saw over one hundred and fifty youngsters graduating from beginners through to advanced level sailing courses in Optimist, Topper, and Echo 12 dinghies. With this number of youngsters involved today, the future of sailing in Barbados looks extremely bright.
