What an eventful year it was at BYSC. As I have come to expect, the old year at the club ended at a very hectic pace with so much activity through the Holidays it was difficult to keep up with it all. I hope each of you have had a wonderful holiday season and are now looking forward to the New Year and all the fun and camaraderie BYSC has to offer. Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club... I would like to take this opportunity to once again, both personally and on behalf of the club, express thanks and best wishes to Sue and Larry Hamilton (as well as to Larry senior). What a tremendous influence they have had on our club in the few years they were here in Beaufort. In a very positive way, BYSC will never be the same. They are already missed. I would also like to once again welcome the many new members to the club 2013 was a year of growth for BYSC, so there are a lot of new faces among us. I encourage everyone, old and new members, to participate in a variety of the activities, events and informal gatherings that are ongoing throughout the year at our club come on out, meet people, get involved, you will have a good time. And on that note, look through this issue of the Bow Watch or go to the club web site and you will see there are a lot of activities to chose from at the club during this slow season. It really is NOT too cold to enjoy the water or to play some tennis or to volunteer for a work day or club project. The river is generally not quite as busy now so it is actually a nice time of year for boating/sailing/fishing/kayaking/rowing/sup ing. The club tennis ladder is getting organized. Sunset and First Fridays are continuing (with the help of the space heaters the porch can be quite comfortable when it is cold out). The annual SAYRA meeting is in late January. Sailing seminars, race management classes and River Rat training are being scheduled. The big boats will be racing again soon and skippers are looking for crew. The auxiliary is busy preparing for upcoming events. And, initial planning for BYSC summer camp for the kids is already underway. So, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone. 2 Hey Ya ll, It s chilly around the BYSC right now but Spring is coming! I am gearing up for a great season and planning camp and lots of other fun for the warmer months. I am going to schedule a round table discussion with folks on things they would like to see happen here at the BYSC this summer for early February, any and everyone will be invited to attend. 3 The New Years Junior Sailing Oyster Roast was a great time. Special thanks to Capt Irons and Calhoun, and all the other volunteers who came out and put on a good time for all of us. Once the weather warms up a bit, remember that the 27 Catalina Marshmellow is available for charter to club members, keel boat sailing lessons are also available onboard Marshmellow

4 Sailing and Racing RACING: It s a new year with many sailing events planned and many of these will take place in January or February. Following are some of the important dates. One reminder is that your US Sailing dues are due and you can renew by following the instructions listed below. Jan SAYRA Annual Meeting, Charleston Harbor Resort, Mt. Pleasant. This program is open to all and includes a racing rule seminar on Fri. afternoon, cocktail party at Hobcaw YC on Fri. night, annual meeting on Sat. morning and a whole host of sailing seminars on Sat. afternoon followed by an awards reception that night. You can read more at the SAYRA website: sayra-sailing.com. Reservations ($24) are required for the awards reception. Feb. 1, Sat. 8:00am. US Sailing One Day Race Management Seminar. This seminar is for those who want to know more about the operation of the race committee in conducting the races as well as for those that want to be certified as a Club Race Officer (CRO). You do not have to apply for CRO when you take this class although the test will be available at the end of the day for those that want to become a certified Club Race Officer. Certification covers race officers for liability insurance on the race course. It is required that each participant have a copy of the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) since this book will be used in the seminar. The RRS is available on the US Sailing website. It is suggested that you enter as soon as possible as the class is limited in attendance.

5 US Sailing membership. You must be a current member of US Sailing to attend the seminar and you can renew or join through the following link. Since BYSC is a member of the Member Value Program of US Sailing you will receive a discount by renewing or joining through BYSC and BYSC will get points that the club can be redeemed for various courses or items available through US Sailing. Woody Norwood, 2014 Fleet Captain. This is our annual meeting where the sailors will find out the details of the 2014 racing schedule and be able to voice their opinions on a variety of sailing subjects. Feb. 8, Sat. 1:15 pm. PHRF Frostbite Series Skippers Meeting. Class Captain Everett Ballenger. 2:00 pm. Race day #1 Feb. 9, Sun. 1:00 pm. Rules and Tactics. Wayne Bretsch, National Race Officer, newly relocated to Beaufort, will conduct the rules portion with, hopefully, John Potter providing the tactics the come into play around each of the rules. This is a must for serious sailors-young and old. Learn the rules game within the racing game. Feb. 15, 22, Sat. 2:00 pm. PHRF Frostbite Series continues each Saturday until Mar. 15. 6 Tactics Seminar Sunday Feb 9th, 1PM Rules and -Rules of sailboat racing and how tactics would apply. -Conducted by Wayne Bretsch, US Sailing National Race Officer. -This would be a good seminar for all interested in racing: sailors- adults, juniors-and race committee. Sign Up with BYSC Office.

7 Tennis Ladder We are going to start a tennis ladder here at the club. There will be a men s, women s, boy s and girl s ladder. The boys and girls will be 18 and under as we start. If we have enough people interested or the age range is too wide, we will probably further break down the youth brackets. We may also break down the more mature folks depending on the age range, which I will estimate unless you really want to tell me. To sign up, please contact the office. If anyone under 18 signs up, please give your age. Everyone signing up should please give your level of play, years of experience, and experience in general. Those with a USTA ranking please provide it. I will set the initial ladder. Do not get upset if you disagree with you initial ranking. We will develop rules for challenge matches and those ahead will be required to defend the position on the ladder or lose it. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you at the club. 8 Tennis BYSC 2014 Junior Tennis Training! Winter: January February (8 weeks for $120) Spring: March, April, May (12 weeks for $180) And The BYSC Junior Tennis Festival! May 17 th Beaufort QuickStart Tennis: 10 and Under Tennis, is a USTA competitive play format that features modified equipment and courts, allowing kids to rally and play the game of tennis earlier than the expected advanced lesson training. With shorter and narrower courts, lower nets and lower compression balls, kids build the confidence and ability to cover the entire court. Now, children 10 and under can compete and play, moving their way through a progressive court system until they reach the traditional court size where ages and up compete. Beaufort Intermediate and Advanced Juniors: This session narrows in on the more serious-minded tennis athlete. While this group of players will strive for improvement and not without laughs and fun high performance tennis is the priority.
