2 May 2009 Hello fellow sailors! What a pleasure it is to report that sailing season officially started April 19 under favorable wind conditions and true summer weather. Following the potluck with great food & friends a good handful of early season sailors raced three races to complete the Commodores Cup. Team Tim and Tom Mills took first place for a strong start of the season. Thad Vincent and Sean Randle rounded out the top three places. It was a great start to what is sure to be an excellent season for our Coos Bay Yacht Club. You may notice a thinner profile to any of the trees surrounding the main trailer area. I would like to thank Tom Kyle, for allowing the use of his boom truck to aid in the trimming of the high trees. Club clean-up and water valve replacement were two of the projects accomplished at this most recent work party. Thank you to all who worked so hard to improve our club. The 2009 yearbooks are ready as are your new membership cards. My goal is to minimize the mailing of the books so, see Jessica or myself, and we would love to hand them out. Also, remember that the gate keys have not changed this year so hang on to your old keys they still work. We appreciate all of the RSVP s we have received for the Murder Mystery Dinner this Saturday, May 2. We have confirmed 72 people and look forward to a successful event. I can t wait for the docks to continue to fill and the start lines to become increasingly more crowded! Commodores Cup was FABULOUS! The weather was clear, sunny and WARM. We had 11 boats in the water. 5 REMINDER BOX All boats (or trailers) need to be tagged at the Open Storage area by May 31 st. Construction for more boat storage beginning in June. All dues are to be paid at this time. Any change in address, phone or should be sent to treasurer, Ann Waldrop: MESSAGE FROM PAST COMMODORE THAD VINCENT The sailing season has finally started. This winter seemed to take forever, not because of bad weather or anything like that; matter of fact the weather was the best I can remember. It s just that winters are always long. We have already sailed two weekends with the Commodores Cup starting it off. There was good turnout of boats and weather that I would have been happy with in August. In three races there were three different winners. It was a great warm up. This past Sunday we had the first racing to be counted for the year s championship, fourteen boats sailed. Three San Juans, three MC scows, a Laser and a bunch of Gearys. It was a little cooler with a little rain; still it was great for an April weekend. I think we have an early leader for most improved with Garth & Michelle Frost finishing near the middle in both races. Thanks to a 720 after fouling Tom Mills and few other problems (like other people doing some serious improvements in their sailing) I did not do as well as I like but still had fun. Speaking of 720 s, I recently attended a rules seminar at Seattle Yacht Club. I learned a lot about the new rules. They are different in several areas; primarily Mark roundings, but there are a few other changes too. Since starting to study them I have learned a lot. Both about the new rules and a few things about the old rules I should have known. There are things about Port and Starboard tack and Windward and Leeward definitions I have learned. Therefore, I am going to start a sailing rules and general sailing discussion on Sunday mornings at 11:00. We will use a book by Dave Perry called Understanding the Racing rules of Sailing through You should be able to get it through US Sailing, Steve Kridelbaugh, or Pat and Dana Collins. This will start before the Memorial weekend races on that Sunday morning (10am) and continue for as long as it seems like a good idea. Memorial Weekend: We will have three races as in past years on Sunday starting at 12 noon with a Bring your own meat BBQ to follow when racing is finished. This will comprise the official Memorial Day Regatta. However, we are adding a day of getting out in the club Lasers and doing some casual racing on Saturday. This will start around twelve with a bonfire that evening. Enjoy Sailing! Thad

7 Coos Bay Yacht Club Junior Sailing School Registration June 23-27, 2009 For Youths Years Old We will be teaching boating and basic water safety, care and rigging of small sailboats, sailing techniques, beginning racing techniques, and basic rules. An end of school race will be held on Saturday, June 27th. Classes are held daily 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM. The Saturday, June 27th race will start at 11:00 AM with an awards and ice cream desert following the final race for all family members. The Sailing School will consist of two (or three) instructional levels of class with a goal of instructing the beginning sailor students with up to three years of previous CBYC Sailing School experience mixed in the same class. Students will sail a Holder Hawk. Past Beginning Sailing students should consider themselves for the advanced class if they are confident of their skills or have completed three summers of beginning sailing. The advanced class for 2009 will consist of a variety of racing formats and practice racing. Advanced students will sail a Laser. Students with more than three years in sailing school are welcomed to assist with instruction of the Beginning Sailing students. Daily attendance for the full week is expected. 1. Students must be able to swim well enough to enable themselves to get back into a capsized boat. A basic swim test is required. 2. All students need a supervising parent or adult CBYC member sponsor present on site who is responsible for entry, information, and supervision during the on the docks and on the water activities. Any exceptions need to be discussed with the instructor prior to June 4. The sponsor and parent assume all liability for the activities for the student. Parent volunteer instructors or supervisors are needed for specific events. 3. Each student will be required to provide his or her own U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket to wear at all times while on the docks and on the water. Students should bring a swimsuit, change of dry clothing, and a dry towel, which should have personal identification attached. No radios or CD players please! A shortie (or full length) wet suit is recommended for warmth. Shoes are required to be worn at all times while on the docks. No "free swimming" time is allowed during the lunch break. 5. There is no cost (tuition) for the Sailing School. 6. Class is held rain or shine, only the activities may be modified. 7. Prompt registration prior to June 4, 2009 is appreciated to enable proper planning for the Sailing School. 8.
