As the rain falls and the wind blows, I think of the things I have and have not done to winterize my boat. I need to cap off my diesel tank, pull all halyards away from my mast, get my heat source up and safe, service my potable water, check my batteries, close the sea cocks, open up the lockers so I can get air movement, check antifreeze levels, check engine zincs, lube the head, clean and spray bilge pump electric connections, pull in the Life Sling, clean and stow my BBQ, set the cushions on edge, look for deck leaks, tie on secondary mooring lines, flush and fog the outboard, stabilize my gas fuel tank, store the dingy, clean the bilge, and last but not least make a hot drink and curl up with a good book in the quarter birth on a raining and blowing afternoon. You probably have your own list. As we walk the docks this fall and winter checking on our boats, let s keep an eye on our neighboring vessels. There is no reason to sustain storm damage; most can be averted. If you see activity on other club boats, knock on the hull and say hello. Thievery is still a problem on the docks. Another good thing is to get to know your live-a-boards. They may walk by your boat twice a day. I hear cookies are always a good idea! I have been helped by passing neighbors, and I have been out in a storm helping my neighbors; it s just part of being in community with fellow boaters. We will have a great speaker representing the city water front plan at this months meeting on Tuesday the 21 st. I was at a meeting at WWU and it sounded like the University had designs on part of that property. The port has ideas as does the city and the private business sector all on your water front property. Your tax dollars own it! How does that all blend together? Who will open the draw bridge to let boats in and out of the waterway? Will they dreg the waterway it so sailboats can get in? It could be fun watching boats land in the current of the stream during heavy run off. Lots of ideas, lot of plans. See where we fit into these ideas and how they affect you! Also this meeting we need to vote on the club budget and your Bridge Officers for That shouldn t take too long. And the pot luck! Such great food as always! Now to jump ahead: the December Meeting will have great holiday food with a leisurely candlelit dining experience. And music with the Bellingham Show Stoppers! It promises to be a great and a lively musical performance. I may be a little bias, as my talented and lovely daughter and fellow club member is in this group. 2 Page 2 Notes from the Executive Board Meeting Tuesday, November 7, 2006 Submitted by Mel Davidson, Secretary Meeting opened at 1800hrs. Present: Commodore Bruce Henninger, Dave Barrett, Jack Bazhaw, Kaye Clevenger, Steve Clevenger, Mel Davidson, Glenn Gelhar, Rocky Goodhope, Nori Yamashita. COMMITTEE REPORTS Race: Rocky Goodhope reported there was a low turnout for the awards presentation meeting in October, possibly in part because no other speaker was planned. There was an award to Dreamtime for the most races and another to Mañana for performance. Denny Holmstrom has agreed to be the Race Chair and Committee Boat Chief for the first part of next season up to July. We may have a long first series followed by a shorter less formal one instead of the usual two short series. Reciprocity: Steve Clevenger had no new reciprocal agreements to announce. He has acquired some double-sided tape to affix information boxes to the boat boxes of those slips in our program. Membership: Nori Yamashita proposed new members David Cunningham and Jeanne Richardson (San Juan 7.7, Tiramisu) who were approved. Administrative: Our November speaker will be Malcom Fleming of the Bellingham Mayor s office to tell us more about the waterfront plan. We will also hold the election of officers. Cruise Chair: Dave Barrett will poll the members to help plan next year s cruise schedule. Their will be a Gate 9 pier NW New Year s Eve gathering again this year. Rumors of ribald singing and skinny-dipping at the last New Year s Eve function were apparently untrue. Homeport Editor: Jack Bazhaw raised the question of delivering the Newsletter electronically, but the consensus was that members preferred to have a hard copy for reference. Once again it took but a terse command from the commodore to set the copy deadline for this month s issue as Saturday night. Treasurer: Kaye Clevenger reported the balances of the checking and savings accounts as $4258 and $7246, respectively. The budget was presented at the October meeting and will be approved at the November meeting. OLD BUSINESS The owner of the Oak Harbor Pirates float will be contacted by a friend of Commodore Bruce for possible CYC use in a future Bellingham parade. We are looking for a club member to head up our education committee. We need to do a better job of promoting speakers in the Homeport newsletter. We may be able to get a Coast Guard representative as a future speaker. Board members are requested to send the Commodore three names of new members as possible Board members. FUTURE MEETINGS November 21 for the General Meeting at the Port s Boathouse meeting hall. December 5 for the Board at Glenn Gelhar s house on 17th St. Meeting adjourned at 1855hrs. 3 Turkey Fry Cruise Page 3 The Turkey Fry Cruise was accessible from dry land as poor weather and storm predictions kept us from venturing out again this year. Dave & Deb Jones accommodated all 35 participants in their garage again. There was no shortage of food or good conversation and a good time was had by all.
