Essasailing.com 2010 Stedman Smith Memorial Race The Stedman Smith Cup Race, a longstanding ESSA tradition, ran on Saturday, May 15 in some of the most challenging conditions in recent memory. This regatta consists of two legs, the first from Cambridge to the Tred Avon Yacht Club in Oxford and the second the return trip to Cambridge. The luncheon following the first leg was held at Schooners Restaurant in Oxford. The field for the race consisted of three boats; Bob Dickey s Comet Touche, Bob Gallagher s J-100 Aura, Greig and Linda Mitchell s Catalina 350 If. Touche was crewed by Brian Dickey, J.P. Dubuque, and Matt Hollowy. Aura s crew was Tom Black, Mark Shoemaker and Marvin Quin, all from Cincinatti, OH and John Pagenstecher. Skipper Bob Gallagher resides both in Cincinatti and Oxford. The crew of If was Rosanne Peers, Linda Mitchell and Chris Wilde. Conditions for the first leg beginning at approximately 0930 were indeed challenging with NW head winds of 15 to 20 knots, opposing tide flow, and significant chop and wave action. The boats tacked continuously clawing their way down river toward Oxford. For the return leg the wind had dropped somewhat but was sufficient for a speedy race home. Of the first leg Bob Gallagher stated that It certainly was an exciting race. I have never gone that fast (8.4 kts.) upwind into such chop and spray. It was a blast! Throughout the race competition between the two lead boats, Touche and Aura, was keen. Aura crossed the finish line of both legs first but came in second with an adjusted time of 2:52:09, just minutes behind first place finisher Touche s adjusted time of 2:56:04. If finished third with and adjusted time of 3:17:23 for the 17.6 km course. While the number of entrants was small the conditions, competitiveness, sportsmanship of the crews and luncheon at Schooner s made for an exceptionally enjoyable day of sailing. 2 Tangier Fleet Has First Official Race of the 2010 Racing Season Under overcast skies, the first official race for the Tangier fleet signaled the long awaited start of the summer racing season. While the weather was a reminder of the wet cold spring that made getting our boats ready for a splash a chore, seven crews headed out for a sprinted race. All thoughts of spring though were quickly forgotten in the lively racing in knots winds with a strong opposite current thrown in to make mark roundings a little more interesting than normal. Tangier Tuesday Fun Sails Starts Now With warm weather finally with us and Memorial Day just around the corner, the Tuesday night fun sails are starting out of Bivalve Harbor. Please come join in the pleasure of an evening sail with no Olie, no fixed course; just a relaxing sail in the company of fellow sailors. We meet up around 6PM at the #1 daymark at the harbor entrance and select a general direction to mosey around the river. And for those who are so inclined, dinner afterwards at Boonies is a delightful option. Upcoming ESSA Events Mark Your Calendars ESSA Cruise Weekend May The first cruise of the season has been scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend. Anyone with plans looking for cruising partners, please feel free to pass the word around ESSA. Small Boat Sunday - June 13 The first small boat day is scheduled for June 13th in Tyaskin Park on the Nanticoke River. Bring your Sunfish, your Eight-Ball, even your Frosty. Any boat that can be launched over the beach is welcome. Those without small boats come join the fun as well, boats will be available for all to sail. The day starts around noon with ESSA providing charcoal for the grill and runs till all drop from exhaustion. Take Nanticoke Road out of Salisbury MD, then right on Tyaskin Road to the park.

3 Turning of the USS Constellation Inner Harbor Baltimore If your boating plans will bring you to the Baltimore Inner Harbor on May 27th, you will be treated to a unique experience and a great photo op. Each year the sloop-of war, USS Constellation, is turned around from its berth at the Inner Harbor. The annual turn-around of the historic sloop-of-war U.S.S. Constellation is scheduled to occur in Baltimore Harbor at Baltimore, Maryland on Thursday, May 27, 2010, between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. The event consists of towing the historic sloop-of-war from its Inner Harbor berth at Pier 1 to the Fort McHenry Angle in Baltimore Harbor, then turning the vessel around, and towing it back to its Inner Harbor berth.. Openings are still available for the Advanced Coastal Training Cruises as well beginning level classes on the Chesapeake Bay and docking practice classes. Perfect for both beginners to cruising and those looking to make long distance expeditions. Check out their flyer on the following page for more details.
