We are planning on some great locations for this year and I d like to see a lot of our boats on the water having good fun and great fellowship. To help fill the wishes of our members, we will be sending out a questionnaire on what you would like the direction of the club go. [See survey at end of this newsletter.] This is your chance to help us make Fleet 4 better. Please take a couple minutes to fill it out and get it back to us. Our General Membership meeting will be February 9th at the Round Table Pizza on Madison and Hazel in Fair Oaks. We will have Kevin Morton from Catalina Direct giving a short presentation on items we may want to get for our boat to help keep our Catalina s safe and sound! The meeting starts at 7:00 pm, but there will be some of us there at 6 pm if you want to come early to eat and chat! I hope to see as many of you as I can. MEMBERSHIP REPORT Bill Martin, Membership Chair Roni Lynn, Catalina 22 bimartin@hotmail.com It is now February please get your dues in right away. We have only had 9 people turn in their dues, and we would like to get all dues in before the end of February. The sign-up form is at the end of this newsletter. We will just carry it over into We are in the process of making the 2018 club Roster. Thank you for getting your dues in. Happy sailing. SECRETARY'S WAKE Jim Sinclair, Secretary Running With Scissors, Catalina 22 tinmanjimsin@gmail.com BOARD of DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES JANUARY 7, 2018 Call to Order: The 2018 Transition Meeting of the Board of Directors was held in the home of Mike and Madeline Rayfuse, Sacramento, California, on January 7, 2018, with Fleet Captain Monte Whitefield presiding. The meeting was called to order at 1630 hours. Members Present: Monte Whitefield Captain Roy Moore Past Captain Jim Sinclair Secretary Gary Preston Treasurer Mike Rayfuse Racing Laura-Ann Charlot Cruising Bill Martin Membership Madeline Rayfuse Social Members Not Present: Steven Patchett Past Secretary Tim Hampton Past Cruising Past Captain's Remarks: Past Captain Roy Moore welcomed new Board members and expressed a warm note of optimism for the coming year. Captain's Remarks: Captain Monte Whitefield: thanked all new and returning Board members for their commitment to the Fleet. conveyed his focus for the upcoming year will be membership growth and expansion of cruising sites. Officer Reports: Secretary Jim Sinclair: As there were no previous minutes in his possession to review and approve, no report was rendered. Treasurer Gary Preston: Reviewed the 2017 budget finals. Membership Bill Martin: No report.

Cruising Laura-Ann Charlot: The 2018 tentative cruising schedule will be forthcoming. The board briefly addressed the idea of fewer 'official' cruises, more diversified cruise locations, and the encouragement of 'throw together, last minute' raft-ups. Racing Mike Rayfuse: The Race Schedule for 2018 is posted. Social Madeline Rayfuse: A date needs to be set for the Bigs & Littles event. Discussion was held concerning the best date for the end of year banquet. A motion was made and passed to hold the event on November 17, 2018 at the same location as Other Discussion / Action items: 1. Need to finalize the 'Official' cruising schedule for All 2. Social Media: Monte to get with Kevin Clancy to sort out issues with access to Facebook, web link to Facebook, and a Facebook remodel. 3. Madeline suggested we encourage members to post a rave review of Fleet 4 on Yelp. 4. Bill will look into business cards as an advertising medium. 5. Monte, Bill, and Laura-Ann to spearhead the Fleet Roster composition and publication. 6. Information and photos on our social media need to be updated with current photos and current fleet info. 7. The question was raised as to whether this Transitional Board Meeting needs to be held at an earlier date. Consensus was no Fleet 4 Meetings Schedule: Meetings of the Membership will be held on the second Friday of February, April, June and August [and October]. Time, location, agenda and program to be disseminated to the Membership by the Secretary per the Fleet 4 By-Laws. Meetings of the Board of Directors will be on the fourth Tuesday of the months preceding the Meetings of the Membership. Meeting was adjourned at 1802 hours. CRUSING CORNER Laura-Ann Charlot, Cruising Chair Quiet Time, Catalina 25 #5857 lgcharlot@gmail.com Ahoy Fleet 4 sailors! It's the coldest time of the year right now, and most of you are probably thinking more about ice-boating than sailing, if you are thinking about boats at all. But Spring is only 8 weeks away, and there are venues available all winter for sailing in relatively warm temperatures (warmer than the Central Valley, at least): San Francisco Bay, Monterrey, and the western Delta are all there, only a two to four hour drive away. The next cruise date is coming up in just three weeks: Presidents Day weekend, February If anyone would like to lead a cruise, please let me know. The usual venue for President's Weekend is San Francisco Bay, launching from the ramp at Richmond Marina Bay. Other possible venues with launch ramps are Antioch in the West Delta, or Monterey again. Antioch has the advantage of being in fresh water, so you don't have to dunk your trailer in the salt water at a SF Bay or Monterey launch ramp, and there is a very nice marina with quite reasonable monthly slip fees and guest berth fees right at hand. If no one comes forth to lead an official Cruise, then President's Weekend will be a DIY cruise, and any and all venues are available, including if any of you slip or dry storage renters care to relaunch for the weekend. water level currently stands at 426', so there is plenty of depth to launch at Hobie Cove. The marina docks are closed, but the office is open, and as long as the water level doesn't drop below about 416', the fuel dock is open too. The First of Spring cruise will be March 17-18, the closest weekend to the first day of Spring on the 21st, but if someone wants to lead a cruise the following weekend instead, on the 24th-25th, that would be okay with me. The Board has not finalized or published an official cruising schedule for the year, so I think we can be flexible on the date for the FOS cruise. In past years, the FOS has always been a Cruise, but if anyone wants to lead an "away" cruise, please feel free to do so. NOTE: If anyone who is still working has

Friday March 30th off for Caesar Chavez Day (this is a State holiday), and would want to lead a FOS "away" cruise that weekend, so as to have a three day weekend, that's a possibility too. (Note however that the Sunday of that weekend is Easter.) If no one wants to lead an away cruise in March, there will be a DIY cruise at March 31-April 1, which is when we slip renters hope to be allowed to put our boats back in slips. This summer there will be a two-to-three week cruise to the San Juan/Gulf Islands, which I will lead. Exact dates are not set yet, but the cruise will likely start in mid to late August and end one to two weeks after Labor Day. This date range will allow for anyone wanting to charter a boat to maybe get a lower rental rate after Labor Day weekend, and thus save a few $$$. The itinerary will include Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, Fossil Bay at Sucia, and either Reid or Prevost Harbor on Stuart Island for sure. If the cruise participants decide for sure that they want to visit anywhere in the Gulf Islands, which are in Canada, the itinerary will include Roche Harbor, which is where returnees from the Gulf Islands have to check back in to US Customs and Immigration. In the Gulf Islands, we will likely visit Montague Harbour, Sidney, and possibly Ganges, Maple Bay, Bedwell Harbour, or Wallace Island. Other possibilities in the San Juans are Deer Harbor, Rosario, and Eastsound on Orcas Island, Spencer Spit on Lopez Island, and possibly some other place we've never been, like the southern tip of Lopez Island, where the charts show some interesting possibilities for anchorage. At either the April or June member's meeting, I can do a presentation on cruising the San Juans/Gulf Islands, if anyone is interested. It's time to get working on your boats, to get them ready for a new season! Check your standing and running rigging. Drain and change the fresh water tank in the boat, and shock it with bleach if it needs it. Change motor and lower unit oil in the outboard. Clean the carburetor. Check the water pump impeller and replace it if it isn't pumping out a good solid, steady stream of water. Top off the house batteries with water. Discard old food in the pantry locker if you haven't already done so. Check your PFD's for wear and tear. Check your fire extinguisher for gas pressure level. If you plan to do away cruises to the Bay, Delta, or Monterey, check your signaling devices (flares). If your mast is down, clean the electrical contacts for the bulbs in the mast-mounted lights, and replace the bulbs if needed. Service the trailer wheel bearings and brakes, and check the brake fluid in the reservoir if your trailer has hydraulic brakes. Pump up your fenders with air if they need it. Check your ground tackle, especially the anchor rode for damaged strands. Anchor rode can sometimes get snagged or dragged on rocks or tree stumps and become frayed or damaged. Check that all of the slugs on the luff of the mainsail are intact, especially if your main uses the all-plastic slugs that don't have a metal bail loop. I recommend replacing those plastic ones with the metal-bail slugs. It's only a few bucks; cheap insurance. If you don't have a Fleet 4 Burgee, contact Gary Preston about buying one - that extra 1 cruise point you get for flying it could make the difference between you and someone else winning that highly coveted First Place Cruising Award at the end-ofthe-year Awards Banquet! Fair winds, and sunny skies! MONTEREY BAY CRUISE Monte Whitefield, Cruise Leader Knot Happy, Catalina 25 whitefield@surewest.net For Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend, 3 boats made it to Monterey for a couple days of great sailing! Weather was perfect and the company was amazing! The attendees were Roy and Noreen Moore, Kevin Clancy and Joanne Goodsell, Gary and Karen Preston, plus myself and possible new members Mike and Trish. We took to the water like Jerry Brown took to raising taxes, or Donald Trump took to hairspray! We had the veterans teaching the rookies the joy of being on the water and letting the wind fill our sails. This is one of the truly great

places in the world to sail and I only wished we had more boats on this trip. Next year I want to encourage everyone to put this trip on their calendar! Noreen looking over her shoulder at Miss Behavin. Miss Behavin with Monte, Mike, Trish, Karen & Gary. Mike looking for whales, while Karen & Gary relax. Captain Monte studying the set of his sails. Noreen, Roy and Kevin aboard Miss Irene. Kevin has it dialed in.

RACING REPORT Gary Preston, Charmed Life, Hunter 270 Knot Happy and Miss Behavin back in the marina. The Trans-Folsom is coming up on Saturday, March 31st. Even though it is billed as a race, think of it as an all-day cruise with a planned itinerary. If you are thinking about this racing thing, but aren t quite sure, maybe having an experienced crew on board will help. I am available to crew on a new racer s boat for the Trans-Folsom. If you re not ready for your own boat, then as an alternative you are invited to crew for me aboard my Hunter 270. Let me know if you are interested in either option. I m sure there are a few other experienced racers who are willing to make the same offer. Let me know, and we will match novices with old salts. Call me at home: , or gary_karen_preston@compuserve.com Monte rowing to catch a wayward rudder. CLASSIFIED ADVERTISEMENTS Fixed Keel Catalina 22 on Trailer $2,900 (Will trade for a van and add $.) Hunter Quistgard, Rio Vista qtranx@gmail.com 1976 hull, new standing rigging, new sails (150, 100 and Main), new Honda 5 horse, new paint, new cable railing, new rudder, newly re-upholstered vinyl cushions in and out, owner s manual.
