2 T H E O R I G I N S O F The Driza-Bone oilskin coat is part of Australia s history. Now it is a way of life, some even say a state of mind. I t began life on the early windjammers that plied the great southern oceans, and like all good ideas, was born of necessity. For once upon a time, to keep dry the sailors smeared themselves and their clothes and their hair with a mixture of oils, to ward off the cold and keep out the rain and the ocean s unrelenting spray. Their clothes became heavy and cumbersome, and they lived without the luxury of frequent changes of wardrobe. Then a Scottish sailor by the name of Edward Le Roy discovered that the torn sail on his ship could be recycled in to long coats and sou westers, and by painting the fabric with a mixture of oils they were transformed into excellent wet weather garments. When eventually his sailors went ashore they took their renowned wet weather coats with them. The word spread about the effectiveness of Le Roy s coats in the wet and they were soon adopted by the colonies, squatters and settlers. Once ashore the coat was adapted to life on the land with a fantail to protect the seat of the horse rider s saddle, leg straps to keep the coat from taking off in high winds, and extra long sleeves so that they still protected the wearer when his arms were extended. So effective were the coats that they eventually became known as Driza-Bones, after the dried and parched bones of animals in the arid Australian outback. There have been improvements to the coat s oiling process over time, but the essential style of Driza-Bone and its famous durability remains unchanged. Today the traditionally styled coat is still made from natural cotton fibres which still allow the body to breathe preventing any uncomfortable personal green house effect. And the scientific theory that oil and water do not mix still keeps out the heaviest downpour of rain, even when you need to be outdoors for days on end. Today, the Driza-Bone range includes coats, jackets, vests, trousers, hats and sweaters in a variety of fabrics and weatherproofing finishes, as well as a range of leather accessories. All are designed and made with meticulous attention to detail, to provide comfort, durability and practical good looks.

20 Guarantee & General Care For Your Garments Driza-Bone displays its commitment to service and quality in the best way possible, by a twelve month guarantee anywhere in the world against any faulty materials or workmanship. To validate the guarantee, your Driza-Bone needs to be worn and cared for in accordance with the care instructions on the label. Although the traditional Driza-Bone garments can be hosed down or sponged with cold water, they should not be dry cleaned, washed with detergent or cleaned in hot water. If necessary they can be washed with pure soap in lukewarm water but the garment may then need reproofing. In all cases please refer to the care label with each garment for detailed instructions. Over the years of use, areas that appear lighter in colour on the traditional oilskin fabric indicate where re-proofing may be required. If you would rather not be parted from your Driza-Bone and you wish to reproof the garment yourself, this can be easily done by purchasing our Driza-Bone Garment Dressing. There are full instructions on the can for the best results. If you prefer, you may return your Driza-Bone coat to our Eagleby factory where our friendly staff would be pleased to welcome an old friend back and carry out the necessary re-proofing at a modest cost. 1. First make sure you choose the correct size as undue stress, particularly on the seams caused by a too-tight fit, may allow water to penetrate. 2. Having purchased your garment, please carefully read the washing/care instructions to help prolong its life. 3. DO NOT wash with detergent or hot water, dry clean, starch or iron. 4. If the garment is extremely dirty, use pure soap only e.g. Sunlight, Lux. Hand wash in luke warm water, then re-proof the garment using Driza-Bone Garment Dressing. 5. Always sponge down outer fabric with cold water when soiled, brush off grit etc. 6. DO NOT store wet garments in a confined area. 7. DO NOT hang on radiators, expose to naked flames, or use artificial heat to dry. 8. DO NOT stitch through outer fabric. If garments require stitching, re-proof the damaged area immediately after it has been repaired. 9. ALWAYS hang garments in a dry, airy place to dry off naturally. PRECAUTION: Be careful to ensure that the essential proofing does not mark other clothing or fabrics, particularly in unlined areas of the garment. IMPORTANT: How often your Driza-Bone garment will need re-proofing depends on the amount and type of usage it gets. To insure its long service, regular monthly checks are suggested to ensure there are no dried out areas where re-proofing has been worn away. Pay particular attention to areas such as shoulders, neck seams and places subject to friction, e.g. pockets and creases in sleeves and knees. Condensation may form inside your Driza-Bone coat and wet the lining if the wearer is much warmer than the outside temperature. Your garment is not leaking. Use only original Driza- Bone Garment Dressing, as substitutes could harm the garment and invalidate the guarantee. Note: The Dressing is not for use on the summerweight or Drizapel garments. 21 How to Roll Your Own 1. First, snap close the press studs 2. Then lay the coat flat, with the front facing upwards. 3. Fold the sleeves into the centre, at a slight angle Fold the two sides into the centre to form a long rectangle. 5. Roll up tightly starting from the bottom of the coat. 6. Then fold the cape around the role so that the inside of the cape covers the role. 2. Note: Only fold your coat this way if it is completely dry!

Natural Stretch The natural stretch and flexibility of the merinofibre adds another dimension to the comfort and performance of the garments, merino wool is also exceptionally durable and comfortable. 7. Odour Dispelling Natural resistance to stains and odours makes merino garments ideal for active wear. This also means that merino garments can be washed less frequently than cotton or synthetics. 8.
